I still havent heard this amazing, terrific, super-hip, quacktastic "WALL OF SOUND" version of this song that everyone talks about.......!
In short, it's DRIVING ME INSANE.
Can anyone post it?

THANK YOU NEAL and STRAND........this version is killer. Why in the hell wasnt it put on Say You Will?!? Just like that remix Chris Lord Alge version of the song Say You Will was a lot better than the album version.

I have to admit that I prefer the album version of Thrown Down much more than the Wall Of Sound version, even though it is very lush and beautiful. The WOS version reminds me a little of Big Love. Does anyone know where this comes from? It seems too produced to be just a demo. And it's a total different vocal to be a remix. I've wondered about that ever since I first heard it.
And yes, my littledemon, the single remix of Say You Will is far superior to the one that was on the album.

I've wondered about that ever since I first heard it.The "Wall Of Sound" version is actually a 'Trouble In Shangri-La' outtake. It was recorded for 'TISL,' with Lindsey on guest vocals. The track was included on a German test-pressing of the album, but it didn't make the final cut. Presumably because Stevie thought it would make a stronger Mac song than a solo song, and decided to save it.

Hmm...really? Thats bizarre because the guitar solo parts in the middle of the song are so blatantly Lindsey. I wonder if that was him playing or not?
I WONT SAY that I like the 'Wall of Sound' version of Thrown Down better, but I like it a lot.

Hmm...really? Thats bizarre because the guitar solo parts in the middle of the song are so blatantly Lindsey. I wonder if that was him playing or not?It very well could be... certainly sounds like his style. But I didn't want to say with 100% authority that it is him playing, since I don't know for certain.
As an aside... in an interview with Billboard magazine, sometime in 2000, Sheryl Crow commented on working with Stevie, and said that Stevie's album would include a song they recorded with Lindsey, that would really knock the socks off of anyone who loves those two.
When the album was released, of course, the only Lindsey appearance was on "I Miss You," and I really doubt that that's what Sheryl was referring to.
So she must have been referring to this recording of "Thrown Down."

Yeah the electric guitar sounds very Lindsey. Then again, it sounds a lot like the guy who did all the guitar work on songs like Fall From Grace, etc.
I think Sheryl was pushing for a Mac reunion at the time...Thats cool that Stevie held Thrown Down back for a Mac album, considering at THAT time, it was possible that they wouldnt do another record.

Lindsey on the TISL outtake version has always made me weak in the knees. His vocals are sublime. That version slays the terrible SYW version, imo.

oh, thanks for posting. Yeah, I don't like this one as much. It's not spare enough for the tempo. If that makes sense. It's pretty, though, i don't hate it. It just seems to drag more than the other. And I like the drop off of instruments at "you say your sorry, now you should walk ay-way", which isn't present here. Plus, Stevie's vocal on the other is waaaaay better. I love me some layers, but not on this one. Yep, this one is way too convoluted. Too much Lindsey noodling. Too much harmony and background. etc. It might work if it was a faster song, but here, no. :)
I would agree on most of those points. I do however like the guitar solos...I also like the key that the Say You Will version is in better.

tru dat....i do think the SYW version is a little better. I like Lindsey's intro guitar parts, and Stevie's vocal is definitely better on the album.

Thanks so much!!! This version sounds like an amped up Dreams, almost crossed with Big Love, a lost Tango cut. Very FM, very Lindsay.

Listening to it again, where is the "Shaken your faith in me, no" verse go? Or better yet, where did it come from? And when she tried to add it to the song, is that when the "You wouldn't tell Bob Dylan how to write" discourse took place?

she said that when L wanted her to change "and now you're going home" to "and now he's going home"...so there would be "person" continuity in the song...and she flashed back with the Bob Dylan line....totally precious, and it shut L down a little..hehe

The album version is better. THAT BASS LINE. Vocals are better. However if we had gotten this on the album i would have thought it was a great song. Does that make sense?

I heard TD in a pizza parlor today. Thank goodness my nephew made all As on his report card and chose pizza as his reward! :D I never heard it on the radio, but I've heard the song in all kinds of weird places - grocery stores, laundromats, even a hardware store.
And later, as I was riding my bike to the library, I heard Rhiannon over the loudspeaker at the community pool. (The workers were playing music as they were finally draining it -- it's been closed since August. )

I remember something like that. I did think she says something about the song being an old Buckingham Nicks song. I remember thinking that she meant they were rerecording a song from the Buckingham Nicks album. I have been thinking about that for years. Maybe it was Thrown Down. That was a good call, it even the WOS outtake sounds out of place on TISL, but fits nicely on SYW...
