I've read a little about this over the years, but is there any evience that she stilll indulges? the Albuquerqu '05 show is questionalbe, she was pretty giggly and missed some lyrics that night...but has anyone heard anything else about this?

Well--- there is a bowl sitting on the coffee table right in front of her during making of Say You Will (can't remember whether it was in the CD art or the Destiny Rules documentary)

someone else is going to have to clarify that one....

Yeah, I am sure she still smokes weed....but I would bet she only smokes the good Northern Lights or other hybrid strands with the tiny little crystals and the sweet smell and taste with a buzz that is smooth and mellow yet long lasting----ahhhhh----

hmmm... can't remember where I saw it -- does anyone have the picture of Linds and Stevie sitting on the couch with the bowl sitting on the coffee table (also there were bottles of water and a ton of other stuff) but the bowl is pretty clear....

I am pretty sure it is in insert art of the say you will cd. Anyone?

Could be SOOOOOO wrong here but I don't think she does,
because of "The Breathing Thing." (Listen carefully to Lindsey
in the video clip on disk one of "The Very Best of Fleetwood Mac" -
I THINK that's where I remember it from.) Long story short, the
smoking did too much damage too her lungs for her to be able to
continue both smoking and singing. So I had assumed she quit both
at the same time.

Damn - thought she said she quit.
I heard that she told somebody in
the audience to stop because it
was bothering her lungs.
She mentioned once in an interview that she
got addicted to it because of the second-hand smoke
from her parents' smoking.
I'm also remembering The Peter Jennings Letter -
". . .and if you smoke, please stop!"

Nothing annoys me more than people who are so adamant about not doing something and then they go do it. Stevie preached and preached about the horribles of smoking in every interview she did after she quit, and here she is lighting up again. What a pain in the ass.

She mentioned once in an interview that she
got addicted to it because of the second-hand smoke
from her parents' smoking

I don't recall that, but here is a different quote about why she started smoking

CHUM FM Interview - May 6, 2001
"I only smoked for thirteen years. I started smoking in 1984. (What made you start smoking?) Because I started a record and I fired the producer and moved back to Phoenix to wait for another producer to be finished and it was like a four month break and I was like just really bored and my whole family smokes Kools and I was there. I was just bored and I just started because every body else was. And all of a sudden I was just smoking and I couldn't believe it because it was never something that I wanted to do and I really loved to smoke so that was really a bummer and when you decide that you are going to stop something that you really like, that is really hard."

I must add that the "stevie and the ganja" thread title cracked me up.

I understand about the second-hand smoke thing. My parents have smoked all of my life, and the first time I was on my own (when I was 18) I felt really weird for a few months. Then I felt better than ever, and I guessed the initial troubles were a combination of out-of-the-nest-syndrome and nicotine withdrawal.

I started smoking on my own in my mid-20s. I had one cigarette while drinking at a bar one night, and I was instantly hooked. I smoked the rest of the night after that first one, and ever since. :distress:

As for the real topic of this thread, why do you people always talk about this when I'm out?

Uh, trust me. ;)Definitely, I know lots of people who do this.

As for second hand smoking being the factor in starting yourself...I always blame my dad for starting my addiction, he used to leave his stash of tobacco lying around in the living room when he went to bed, and curious as I was back then, I just HAD to try to roll one myself. The rest, they say, is history. ;)

I'm sure Stevie still puffs them now and then. Nothing wrong with that if you ask me. In fact, if only we could puff one together, then I'd really have something to add to the 'Enigmatic quotes' thread. :]

Stevie preached and preached about the horribles of smoking in every interview she did after she quit, and here she is lighting up again. What a pain in the ass. She's only human, no? And being only human, I assume that she has all of the same weaknesses and fallibilities that the rest of us do.

She may have had every intention of never touching another cigarette, but stress got the best of her, and she gave in to a weakness.
And even if she did, what's the harm in her stressing the importance of quiting (which, just to keep the timeline straight, she had done several months prior to these "cigarette sightings")?
Who better to tell you how unhealthy it is for you, than someone who knows the addiction firsthand?

I'd like to also add that it's very possible that the fans who saw her smoking from a distance, might have seen her with what was actually a nicotine inhaler.

Pot:
A friend of mine who works for a magazine in L.A. told me that Stevie was smoking pot while editing the Sorcerer video someone asked her to stop and she replied Sue me, my video, my time

Cigs:
Same friend told me that Stevie is one of those annoying “former” smokers that are always bumming smokes and then being all put out when people are smoking.

Both of these stories were told with total love. My friend is kinda cynical in regard to the "business" but still adores Stevie.

If these stories are true I think Stevie is like everyone else, she might bum a cig here and there but she doesn’t think of herself as a smoker. I have many friends who preach to me about smoking all the while my cig stash dwindles when they are around. They aren’t bad their just human same for Stevie.

As far as pot goes Ms. Nicks totally still partakes IMO her and the rest of FM.

Nods emphatically. Not only was she smoking , she was smoking during Soundcheck so Ghosttracker's idea about her not being able to sing/breath doesn't appear to be true. She was inhaling, singing the Chain, inhaling, singing Dreams. I still laugh at the thought of "Ashtray Roadie". I would love his job!

BTW..on the DR doc, you can see weed numerous times. Both she and LB are still heavy tokers. Like it or not.

Oh and it was so damn obvious to me this summer. On the SYW tour, I thought it was less obvious but I could still tell. This summer? She was indulging alot. For those who will pipe up and say they saw her live and she seemed fine, all I can say to that is you must not spend too much time around people who are high on weed. The idea seems to offend some people and it shouldn't. Stevie travels in rock circles, she hangs around old hippies, like Lindsey. It is no big deal when compared to the many other substances she has been addicted to in her life. It is her choice anyway. (I do wish she would quit smoking cigarettes though!)

I'm not trying to start a flame war here, just honestly asking for
an opinion - If you have to inhale the smoke to get "high on weed,"
how can that possibly not be unhealthy for her after all of the
cigarette smoking? She was a chain smoker for years, there MUST
have been some damage. What I heard Lindsey say, was something
about a "breathing problem."

Anyway I could picture her maybe smoking a cig. once in a while,
especially to calm her nerves before a concert,
but I don't think she's a chain smoker any more.

By the way, Ozzy Ozbourne recently mentioned that out of all the
serious hard-core drugs, and alcohol,
cigarettes were the hardest to stop.

And just to defend the Stevester a little bit ( )
I'm about as square as they come -
but if MY Dad had been dying this summer,
I think I probably would have been blitzed out of my mind on everything
I could get my hands on. Or, at least, I can sympathize.
She probably knows her limits by now.
Me, I would've been lookin' for a tanker truck of vodka.
So I honestly think she "did the best she could"
under some pretty difficult circumstances.
There really is a story circulating that she wanted to quit,
and her Mom talked her in to continuing.
It was only one tour, it wouldn't have been the end of the world
if she had cancelled.
ANY-way those are just my opinions.

How about ten people? Or twenty?

Stevie's got millions of fans, she knows her influence.

many hundreds of millions of dollars Clinton and Busche have raised
for Hurricane Relief by now.....

I think maybe Stevie feels strongly that she doesn't have a problem

High on weed or drunk on alcohol? I'm just curious because from what I heard from people and from the boots..slurring words seems more like an after effect of alcohol than weed.

She seemed fine at the two Vegas shows I attended, the Atlanta Two Voices show, and the last Vegas final concert. I cannot comment on the other shows because I was not there - but the boots I have heard do not sound like she was way out of it to the point that it was noticeable in any significant way. So, my experience indicates that while she probably was stoned and had a shot of tequila in her, she was not a total blithering mess

You know, some people are just fickle. I have a friend who is like this. She'll go on Atkins and go on and on about how she doesn't think about sweets anymore, she's never going to eat pasta again, etc. Then next month she'll go off of that and say Atkins doesn't work and she's just doing low-calorie forever. Then she'll go off of that and say it's all about exercise.
Or she'll break up with a guy and say she's through with him forever, but then next month she's back with him and downplaying all of his faults and rewriting their history.

It used to drive me nuts until I realized that's just how some people are. It's my feeling Stevie is probably sincere in what she says at that moment, whether it be about smoking, Fleetwood Mac, men, etc. etc. Then when she says something later, she's sincere in that moment, too, even if it completely contradicts what she said in the last interview. I don't think she is trying to say "do as I say, not as I do." I think she just rewrites her story as it suits her.

I think maybe Stevie feels strongly that she doesn't have a problem

What if her comments - lies, streches, whateva -
literally saved someone's life?

How about ten people? Or twenty?

Stevie's got millions of fans, she knows her influence.

"Tell me lies, tell me sweet little lies...."

Maybe sometimes someone who's not an angel can rock the world
and make it a much better place. Anyway that's my thought on it -
I'm gonna go head to the Carnegie Library now and then see how
many hundreds of millions of dollars Clinton and Busche have raised
for Hurricane Relief by now.....

Those things still don't make her any less of a hypocrite if she's still smoking dope. Methinks that you're looking at this through glasses that will show Stevie to be a saint in every respect no matter what. She's only human, but the fact that a rock star is giving interview after interview about how horrible drugs and cigarettes are, how no one should use them, and then turns around to indulge in such substances herself is laughable. It must be nice for her to sit on such a high horse. If she can't refrain from using such things, she shouldn't open her big mouth to lecture others on using them.

I do not think she has ever said not to use pot or not to drink? My recollection is she talks about how she got caught up in coke and Klonopin and she expressly has said those are the only two things she had a problem with. In fact, she expressly said in more than one interview that she had a problem only with those two. It is possible for cocaine addicts to stop that and still drink booze. I know people who do this and a are successful at it.

As for the cigs, I think she quit awhile back and maybe has occasional relapses as many former smokers do. But, I think she is valid in her notion that she should quit. I mean what is she supposed to do, call CNN and say "I know I told the world I stopped smoking, but last Tuesday night I slipped and had one and I think everyone should know that lest people think I am a fake"

She is a human being for goodness sake - sometimes even she is allowed to fall. But, to you, that makes her a weak, supercilious bitch who needs your judgment from your high horse. I say high horse because if you have ever tried to quit something you bitch to others about and failed in any way, this makes you a hypocrite for castigating La Nicks for her humanity.

You're not going to believe me in a million years but -
I love 'er 'ta death but - I and all of my friends from school
(and pretty much anybody in my not really all that ancient age

Ain't no rose-colored glasses here. I just think trying to save

By the way I'm a huge Journey fan also -

Blah blah. I stand by what I said.Of course you do... you're inflexible like that.

But the fact of the matter is, Stevie has never (that I've ever heard or read) criticized others for doing drugs or drinking. All she's ever related, is how doing drugs affected HER and that maybe someone out there can learn from what she's been through and save themselves that heartache.

I don't see how that makes her a hypocrite.

And folks are making it sound like she was out there doing PSAs to stop smoking. She talked about the fact that she quit smoking in, what, three or four interviews around the same time-period. And said that if she, of all people, could quit smoking, then there's hope for others who know that they should quit smoking. She never made it sound like she was better than anyone else because she had quit, and anyone who felt she did, was just being hyper-critical (or hyper-sensitive).

And if she has "relapsed" and is smoking again, well, that's life. People are weak. Stevie included.
I don't smoke. Never have, never plan to. And sometimes it's hard for me to understand why someone NEEEEDS that cigarette. But people do.
And I've seen friends and loved ones struggle for long periods of time with trying to quit. Going through the phases of "I'm never going to smoke again" to the "I just need this one cigarette to get through Uncle Jack's funeral" to "I know I shouldn't have started again, but I am trying to quit," several times over.

Sometimes it takes a while for something like that to stick.
But, again, I see a lot of value in someone who knows FIRSTHAND what kind of a stranglehold that particular addiction can have on you, suggesting to others that they should try to quit, too.

It's sure better than you or me or AliP telling people how we feel about smoking, when we have absolutely no idea what that addiction is like.

And for the record, and with no disrepect meant to anyone, but I'll believe that Stevie is smoking again, when someone produces photographic proof that she is.
Seems like the least we can do before we pass judgement on someone, huh?

but is marijuana really the same kind of drug as coke?
cocaine and cigarettes are far more life-threatening than weed... so is alcohol.. unless of course Stevie is getting high and then going out and cruising around Phoenix in that Porsche she bought from "Risky Business" ;)

but seriously... I don't think she's being a hypocrite by talking about quitting cigarettes and coke and klonopin (3 highly addictive substances), while still continuing to smoke pot...

My only problem with her continuing to smoke marijuana is that she tends to light up on opening nights when she's on tour (and a select few other shows)... which causes her to put on lethargic, lifeless peformances... All she's ever related, is how doing drugs affected HER and that maybe someone out there can learn from what she's been through and save themselves that heartache.

I don't see how that makes her a hypocrite.

I think it's hypocritical for someone who may still be using drugs (even if it is just weed) after they've claimed to be clean to lecture others via interviews about how bad drugs are and not to make the mistake of using them. If you've stopped using them, then by all means go out and warn others about them. But shut your piehole if you're still smoking weed after numerous drug addictions and two stints in rehab.

I don't really care whether she lights up or not, it's no skin off my ass. I just find it silly that she can warn others not to use drugs with a straight face if she's still partaking in them. That's just my opinion.

And if she has "relapsed" and is smoking again, well, that's life. People are weak. Stevie included.

Meh, I don't care if she's smoking Kools again. It's her voice and lungs that she's ruining.

But, again, I see a lot of value in someone who knows FIRSTHAND what kind of a stranglehold that particular addiction can have on you, suggesting to others that they should try to quit, too.

I always giggle when I hear someone who is still a smoker or a user telling others not to follow in their footsteps. As true as the sentiment might be, it rings hollow coming from them and makes them look (and sound) pathetic.

And for the record, and with no disrepect meant to anyone, but I'll believe that Stevie is smoking again, when someone produces photographic proof that she is.

She could very easily not talk about it at all, and have a "let 'em ruin their lives -- what do I care?" attitude.

I don't think she really needs to share half of the things that she does (abortions, drugs, failed relationships, etc.), but the fact of the matter is that she opens her mouth to make such comments, so it should be expected that people will have different reactions.

Maybe for her to talk is therapeutic, maybe she thinks she can helps someone sharing her experiences (I think that's true by the way). I really doubt she expects to be canonized but shouldn't she have the benefit of doubt?

I take everything that chick says with a grain of salt.

Well, that seems a reasonable behaviour with everyone, or you think the other celebrities are sincere by default?

Meh, I'm not her therapist. I think it's admirable that she as honest as she is, but sometimes I think she's goes overboard into TMI territory simply because all of her admissions tend to color my enjoyment of certain songs. That's why I tend to shy away from a lot of her explanations about them; I want to interpret them on my own and not think "Oh, wow, this song is about her abortiona nd that one is about her torrid affair with Mick."

I really doubt she expects to be canonized but shouldn't she have the benefit of doubt?

She's the original rock martyr. She crows about everything she gave up at every opportunity. She was even doing it in Rosanna Arquette's last documentary.

Well, that seems a reasonable behaviour with everyone, or you think the other celebrities are sincere by default?

"Celebrities" and "sincere" don't belong in the same sentence together.

My point, again, is that she would be illegal if she admitted to currently using it. Conveniently skipped over, eh?

Whitney's a crack headed fool. And she had to, she went to rehab. Stevie isn't going to "pot rehab", you can bet on it. ;)

That is, again, because whitney is a crack headed fool.
I don't want to ever hear that Stevie should do something because Whitney did it. That's, what, the fourth sign of the apocolypse?

After all who cares what they were written about. Once they are out there they're ours, IMO. I find her explanations interesting from a biographic point of view though. And by the way thanks a lot Mick for inspiring Storms! :D

She's the original rock martyr. She crows about everything she gave up at every opportunity. She was even doing it in Rosanna Arquette's last documentary.

You'll never digest that line in Joan of Arc, right? :p I still think she was ironic there and the way she talks about her job, for me it's moving and melanchonic at the same time.

"Celebrities" and "sincere" don't belong in the same sentence together.

We agree on this one.

Nice edit.

Well, I was gonna go into the whole people learning from her mistakes with drugs does not apply to pot because she thinks she has no problem with pot. When she refers to her mistakes with drugs, she is referring to the coke and Klonopin alone. But, then I realized you seemingly consider all of her drug use to be a problem for her, a position she does not share

I'll never understand how stating a fact such as "I gave up getting married and having children for my career" can be looked at as someone making a martyr out of themselves.

She did that, right? But she's not allowed to talk about it?

When I say I choose to not take medication, even though I have agoraphobia and going places is a struggle for me, I'm not looking for sympathy or trying to make a martyr out of myself. I'm stating a fact.
If Stevie says, "I couldn't see how I could juggle motherhood with my career," she's stating a fact, too.

But you always want to see her in the most cynical of lights, so...... ;)

Interestingly, Mick's pressure on the money making Stevie certainly was an influence on her not taking two years off to have a kid, with the risk of retiring after having the kid.

Too bad Sharon deleted that article where Stevie blamed Mick for getting in the way of her bearing a child. :laugh:Come on now... any comment made in the late '80s and up to the mid-'90s, has to be taken in context of the Klonopin addiction, when she herself admits she was miserably depressed and difficult to get along with.

I don't recall any "woe is me" type comments like that being made since she kicked the Klonopin.

Anyone think maybe she was a little high before her Today show performance? She seemed kind of hyper when she was talking to Katie in between songs. I have no interest in pot myself since I've had a lung collapse in the past, but a close friend used to do it a lot and it always seemed like she was a complete jabberjaw and really amped up when she smoked it.

As for the smoking, well it's her choice. She knows the consequences. And don't flame me for this, but after watching her Today performances again and again, I'm really not overly impressed. She's completely lost her upper register and some of the notes she hits sound pretty off to me, and if she continues smoking, I doubt she'll be able to continue sounding as good as she did in this summer's concerts.

I rarely criticize Stevie - I love the woman and her music, but I have to be honest here. *Ducking flying tomatoes now* :sorry:

Can't even admit to making a mistake without being called a whiner. Yikes.

"I look at him with his children and I think, 'oh, Stevie, you made a mistake.'"

well, marianne faithfull said in an interview a few years ago that she occasionally still indulges, and she, like stevie went to rehab twice. Marianne said that it's just hard not to do soemthing that was a big part of her life for so long, and she still on the occasion helps herself to a little something....i', sure that this is a similar situation for stevie.

Of course that was what he was saying and now he is spinning it. This is because he equates smoking pot to a coke and Rx drug habit, a position unsupported by the facts.

Actually from a rehab or 12 step standpoint it's all the same. Any addiction recovery specialist worth their salt would tell you that unless you stop everything, you're not really clean. And being completely clean is a huge part of the process.

No, I just expect Miss Honesty to fess up to still using illegal substances (if she is still using them) when she talks about people learning from her mistakes with drugs. But if she admitted to lighting up, it wouldn't reflect positively on a woman who had numerous drug addictions in the past and went through two stints in rehab.

Not to mention that she checked in to Betty Ford for "alcohol addiction."
