I'm not a very good houseguest. I just don't like to go to other people's houses. I like people to come to my house. Probably because that's the way I was raised. My mother never really let me go & stay at other people's houses. She would allow me to have all my friends to my house, but she would not allow me to go away. And this comes from something that she's never told me about her own childhood. And some day she will tell me, & it won't be a nice story. But there's something about her, the way she raised me, that said You can have anybody you want, as late as you want, at our house. But you cannot stay with them.

"Why is Doing the Best I Can subtitled 'Escape from Berlin?'"

Stevie's answer:

"The musical part of the song is kind of scary and it reminded me of having to escape from somewhere."

That is bizarre, I'd never heard/read that. Of course I was thinking "my house was opposite. No one could really come to my house, ever." But besides that, it's still bizarre.

Aside from that, I think most things Stevie says are bizarre. Not necessarily in themselves, although that can happen.
The sheer...Candid Randomness is bizarre.
The lies/refabrications/evasions are bizarre, yet rich and varied. As are the revealed truths. And you never know which it is. I think they are impenatrably intertwined. It's a rich tapestry of lies and truths. Golden. Lovely.

The rote repititions are even bizarre.
"So, I went down to sly stones fabulous studio...it had a whole spiral staircase, and was just...it was really fabulous...." - - - "So then Prince came over and wrote the synth part, and I never saw him again!"
*YEAH, WE KNOW! * And goodness knows half of those could be fabrications, too! Soooo Sweeeeet!
Shyeah.
The thing is, I can totally imagine how that happens/happened. In the real way, nothing Stevie says is bizarre to me at all. Even when it's bad.

I can always see how, objectively, it would be bizarre. But to me it makes sense. Plus, I'm not looking for especially literal things in Stevie's songs.
I do look for the literal emotional meanings, and I believe that is always very, or at least fairly, easily discernable.
I enjoy the game, insofar as I play it, and just take everything I hear as a part of a rich tapestry, and then try to discern any meanings which may be repeating patterns. No big. A bunch I take with grains of salt, because I know how that is. I say all kinds of random things all the time. They could mean anything at any moment. I just take Stevie the same way. No one could possibly think or feel the same things all the time. That's absurd! And predictable! It just seems natural to me that sometimes Stevie would be totally brill, and sometimes she'd be TOOOOTALLY lame. It all works out.
Sooo...this convo is close to moot for me, though I love reading all the bizarre things Stevie has said. I love it like chips and salsa. Salsa Fresca, that is.

These shows that the band tapes just don't show up fast enough for me. You have to wait years & years for some fan to grab it.

This is my all-time favorite "can I have some of that?" quote -

"I read the name of it in a . . . just a . . . novel;
realized it, thought, 'that's a really beautiful name;'
'bout . . . ten minutes later, sat down, wrote, 'Rhiannon!'
We think . . . she was a goddess . . . Queen . . .
and that her memory became the myth . . . .
I definitely feel that there's a presence! . . . ."
[intro to "Rhiannon" starts.]

Yeah uhmmm - yeah, OKAY! :)

( actually I think she did this intentionally to encourage her
"mystical" image but - yike!? Can I have some TOO??? :D )

"I read the name of it in a, in a, just a novel. I really liked it, thought 'that's a really beautiful name.' Sat down -- (makes pencil scratching sound) -- 'bout ten minutes later wrote 'Rhiannon.'
We think that she was in fact queen, and that her memory became the myth.
I definitely feel that there's a presence...."

And then the rest is obscured by the music. It sounds like "in this song."

I think maybe she was saying that the people's "collective
memory" of the character grew over time into a bigger and bigger
myth. And to borrow from the bus driver character on "Simpsons,"
she felt that that was just AWESOME. She also felt at that moment,
I think, that those CLOUDS, are AWESOME. This CHAIR, is AWESOME!
This MICROPHONE, is AWESOME!
Really, though, I think mostly she was trying to start building her
"mythical, gypsy" image.
Isn't she AWESOME!???

"There is always magic to be summoned at any point. I love to live in a world of magic, but not a fake world of magic. We all really basically have a lot of magic....it's only those of us that choose to accept it, that really understand it. It's there for everyone. That's the only thing that I feel that I am able to give to people and that's why I know that they respond to me because I try to give them only their own magic...not mine, but theirs. "

Yep, that's the Annie Nightingale, One To One interview.
I always thought it was very odd too.

Have any of you guys seen the Sky News interview she did from around that same time?
If I get a chance I'll transcribe it this weekend. From what I recall it's pretty good. That would be great, Sharon. We U.S.ers have all these European interviews on tape, but we don't know the names of these shows or their interviewers. I remember one was called Rapido. Another one was French & had no show name. There were numerous clips from England. We need you Europeans to ID these.

My favorite quote of all time from Stevie. Enigmatic, stupid, and shockingly juvenile all at one time.

But I'm not one of those people, like Jackson Browne, who went up to the Diablo Canyon nuclear protest. I said to him, "But they could have broken your fingers-your beautiful fingers that write all those beautiful songs. Are you crazy? We need you to write songs. We don't need you to be in jail."

And this one has always stayed with me just for it's sheer silliness:

All my feather stuff is in L.A. at a temperature-controlled stage-storage place. I keep all my good stuff there because if I had it all in my house, I wouldn't have any room for my regular clothes. It has to, like, not live here.

From 1981, Interview in BAM Magazine:

"Stevie Nicks: 'That's one of the reasons I wanted to see if I could do it myself. When you work with somebody who is that much in control, and who has always been that much in control--from, like, 1970 on--you forget that you're even capable of doing something yourself. I'd write my song and then Lindsey would take it, fix it, change it around, chop it up and then put it back together. Doing that is second nature to Lindsey, especially on my songs. He does better work on my songs than on anybody's because he knows that I always give them to him freely. It's a matter of trust. So it was interesting to work without him, because my songs pretty much stayed the same; the only difference was what happened after I'd written them. When I write a song I sit down at the piano and play it front to back. For Bella Donna I would do that, or have a demo like that, and the other musicians would just listen to it, getting their own ideas of how to fill in the rest. Usually, by a couple of times through the song they had a good idea of what they could do with it. My songs aren't complicated, to say the least. The sessions went very quickly, really.'

BAM: 'You said you'd felt dependent on Lindsey in Fleetwood Mac. Was it difficult for you to think for yourself during the sessions for Bella Donna?'

Stevie Nicks: 'No, it was exhilarating! Instead of just sitting around hour after hour, I got to be a part of it. Working with Lindsey, it's so easy to just let him take it. On this album I didn't have to fight to do my songs the way I wanted to. '"

Uhhhh . . . . .

How can you give your songs to someone freely,
and have to fight to keep them the same at the same time?
*scratches head*

Stevie Nicks: 'No, it was exhilarating! Instead of just sitting around hour after hour, I got to be a part of it. Working with Lindsey, it's so easy to just let him take it. On this album I didn't have to fight to do my songs the way I wanted to. '"

Uhhhh . . . . .

How can you give your songs to someone freely,
and have to fight to keep them the same at the same time?

Both these have always made complete sense to me. Why would a piano player risk having his hands screwed up ? Slight as the risk may have been. Plus, Jackson needed those hands to smack around future girlfriends. :sorry:

Of course you store elaborate feathered costumes in climate controlled storage. Where else, in a Sea Crate in a broiling Phoenix parking lot ? :wavey:

I always thought the Jackson Browne quote made her sound like a f*cking twit. Not the airhead that she's always come across as, but a certifiable dolt with an IQ equivalent to that of the average ten year old.

Yep, that's the Annie Nightingale, One To One interview.
I always thought it was very odd too.

Have any of you guys seen the Sky News interview she did from around that same time?
If I get a chance I'll transcribe it this weekend. From what I recall it's pretty good.

yeah, there are 3 different interviews on this DVD. The second one is much cooler I think because shes in a big castle style room and talks about a lot of the songs, lindsey, her clothes, and lots of other stuff. This footage they keep showing is very cool because it looks like promotional footage done for that album that I have never seen before. She also wears all her stage clothes for these interviews.

So cool!!!!

Yes! And there's another snippet on the tape done during Behind The Mask press stuff in Europe, & they show footage from some outdoor show in Europe & they're playing Everywhere!

These shows that the band tapes just don't show up fast enough for me. You have to wait years & years for some fan to grab it.

That european show is probably Essen 90 which I will have on DVD soon. Or it could be Holland 90 on dvd which ill have soon too. ;)

I think it is so damned funny. The personification kills me. Like it has to "Not Live Here" as if the clothes would need to be fed and have their own bathroom. It illustrates how goofy she is. In a good way. Also, I say it to people all the time. I have told tenants before, "Dude, this crap on the bacony can't live here" or at work..."These tchotchke can't live on this shelf. They need to live on that sideboard." If Stevie says something that I say that cracks me up, it makes me crack up three times as hard.

Somehow the "not live here" part sounds like perfect, normal English
to me.
She's just simply saying that she needs to be separated from it;
that it's not always a part of who she really is.
She needs to keep it at a distance so it doesn't overwhelm her.
Perspective and all that. Just seems like a normal analogy to me -

No, I can totally relate to that. It's like saying "I won't own that". It just means that the costumes she wears on stage are part of a persona and she does not live that persona 24/7.

I have a mannequin named Paloma and I always say she "lives" with me. She came with me when I moved from Pittsburgh to LA and my friends even ask about her, like she was a real person. I had a friend over one time who was helping me clean up my apartment (I'm a terrible pack rat) and he said "next I'm gonna get you to throw that away" and I said "hey, shut up... she'll hear you!!!"

She's talking about "Sisters of the Moon" there & what prompted her to write it (illness, depression). Of course it's scattered & totemic because Stevie's drug use (remember this was done in the early morning after the fifth night of the Forum gig in L.A.) often released the ability in her to describe her own spirit in hyperrealistic, uncanny ways. This whole interview is just full of such unbent descriptions & states of mind that I don't think any other single interview gives you as much insight into Stevie. Look at the way she talks about "Rhiannon," for example -- "And so Aaron touched the twins with his hand so that they would sleep/And in that sleep there would be no pain/And this was in a haunted song & a charmed hour/And this was the angel of my dreams." I put in the line-stops because whatever she's saying actually sounds like her poetry. In fact, maybe she's reading something from one of her bulky journals. But whatever she's doing -- & I always thought she was just on a stream-of-consciousness attempt to get the spirit of the song across -- it's working. Also, Jim Ladd & his people did some extraordinary cutting & editing & interweaving of strands of interview so that it all paints a very cinematic picture.

I think the whole thing is really a time capsule interview -- it's on that level. Plus, Ladd got lots of calls for days after the interview aired on KMET. People were a lot more curious about Stevie after that than they probably were before.

Drugs have always been used to achieve heightened states of consciousness. You get a lot of mumbo-jumbo & you often get a lot of embarrassing stuff (sometimes artists paint something under the influence thinking it's a masterpiece but when they look at it sober, they see it's a piece of ****). But drugs often generated bizarre but memorable -- & perversely sensible -- Stevie art. I think she sometimes used them in the same way that Hopi Indian chiefs used them: for the ability to see spiritually what couldn't be seen otherwise. Stevie's a shaman! And didn't Jim Ladd call "Sisters of the Moon" "shaman music" or something a few years ago?

If its any matter to anyone - I think this is also what GDW is about. I think she is calling that alter ego the GDW - I also think the baby don't leave me part in the alt. version is her pleading with the innocent Stevie not to leave because then there will only be that sick and frail GDW.

Interview with Jim Ladd - 1979 "So intense silence silence when she walked into the room was me...looking at myself. And they like to wrap her in velvet like some sort of weird corpse, but not me. You can do that to other rock and roll stars, baby, but I'm not doing that. I love life too much."

"But I was sinking, but I wasn't sinking from booze or drugs. I was letting my own self sink and sort of getting off on the fact that I was so frail and so blonde and so pale. My dad was there and there was something about being there with my family and walking in front of that mirror that clicked it cause I had looked that way for months, and it could have happened anywhere, but there was something about being home and looking at my parents and they would say 'are you crazy? Where is that little girl that we love? Where is that one who sings in her bedroom until five in the morning and then cries? Where is she? Is she gone?' No, she's not gone, hopefully. And that's what that is...so we make our choices when there is no choice."

I'm pretty sure that she's quoting from one of the Rhiannon books

I love that! And it's very similar to the 20/20 interview she did around the same time. Where she's sitting at the piano, in that blue velvet top, and the interviewer (can't remember his name - does anyone know his name? heh) is standing next to her. IMO, she's totally baked! She's playing the intro, in her usual "chopsticks" style, and she stops and says something like:

"I looked at myself in the mirror and didn't recognize myself. I was like, 'who...who is that girl?' I was REAL pale, REAL blonde, REAL skinny...so if I'm talking to anyone in this song, I'm talking to myself..."

And then she plays and sings, "Intense....silence, as she walked in the room..." And then they cut to the live shot onstage for the rest of the song.

Now that my YouSendIt access is back up, I can post the 20/20 video. As great as this profile was, it was really a bummer to most of us who saw it broadcast on TV because the story before it (there were always three stories on an hourlong 20/20) was all about slaughterhouses & seal-hunting & other stuff that you really don't want to see pictures of while you're sitting there in your jammies waiting to see Fleetwood Mac on TV.

And where the fack is the rest of that Cleveland footage?! Huh?!?! Stupid-ass ABC probably has it locked up somewhere unbeknown to anyone who works there now.
