I agree all the way, babe. Unfortunately, I think it's an unrealistic goal without some form of proletarian revolution.

I agree, but I am unusure even with a proletarian revolution how it could work. History demonstrates similar revolutions result in that great idea being bastardized into another version of capitalism or a dictatorship. I mean I can think of no successful implementation of anything approaching social democracy, esp. in countries that tried to implement communism, which is similar to social democracy in that true communism wants everyone to have the same basic things.

. . .
The simple fact is that, yes, there have and will be wealthy philanthropists and their contributions are great. However, the fact that people like Paul Allen, Bill Gates and Oprah donate money and at the same time have $60,000,000 homes, huge yachts and spreads that are the size of small cities is a little ridiculous. Does anyone really need all that stuff? I can understand the desire for luxury, but people who revel in luxury should not be surprised when people call a spade a spade.

Well, they are allowed to have those things.

Also, when you look at it as a percentage of their wealth, it is no different that one of us lower income people having a nice house.

But and again, I do not want anyone telling me what I need or how to spend the money I have - do you? Because I am sure that many of the people living in boxes would suggest most of things you and I have are unnecessary and we do not need them, which I am sure would result in a loud "piss off" from both of us though they are calling a spade a spade as well

And, this is not a slam on you or anyone else. It is just me being puzzled at people wanting to project their ideas of what people ought to have onto others and then refusing (in general) to have that same light on them because they do not have a billion dollars - somehow making a good salary that enabled only comparatively moderate luxuries is okay.

Everything that I have wanted to say for a long while all compressed down into a nice, little, neat package. My frustration comes from these things being so apparent, yet all the while society refuses to look at the truth. Human nature is very constant and depressing . . . .

The arguments about spending are USELESS without knowing how people got where they are.

That is the exact ****ing thing that I said before Jason ripped me a new asshole about personal donations and all of that other useless ****. We need to realize what our society has done that perpetuates poverty and homelessness; how so many people can be so impoverished in such a rich country. But no one will dare touch such a thing.

Well, if you are talking about the Timberlands and the bling bling - I misunderstood what you were saying and thought you were talking about private spending.

I agree with Sparky's point and have never really said anything to the contrary.

I readily admit and have always said that until people are educated (which is a complicated phrase) - many on the welfare will stay there and never advance. Again, I look back to when I tutored those housing project kids and their parents wanted so much more for them and realized education was the only way to acheive that goal. They wanted a better life for those kids. Sadly, many of those kids did not realize the benefit of an education and wanted instead to remain where they were. It was difficult to explain to them that what their parents were was not what they should strive to acheive. To get that point across, it really took the parents saying that to them over and over. That was horrifying to me because here you had these hard working people (again most worked as maids in the morning and in fast food in the afternoon) essentially admitting they were failures and their kids should not look up to their lives. That Summer really taught a whole lot about life - lemme tell ya.

As far as helping families below the poverty line, if we don't have welfare, then we need to insure there are jobs that pay a living wage, and that there are affordable options for childcare. I don't know how you do that, but I do know that there are CEOs and shareholders raking in bucks and nothing is enough for them. They (corporations) have lobbyists galore, and politicians in their pockets and are accountable to noone.

Have you ever read "Nickel and Dimed" by Barbara Ehrenreich? It's shocking on so many levels that people out there work their asses off, even holding two or three jobs, and have to live out of their ****ing cars because the money they make is not enough to support them in terms of housing, utility bills, and food. Honey - I have seen it. Again, those kids in NOLA - the only reason their parents, who made about $600 or so a month after taxes had a roof over their heads was because the state helped them out and private charities, like the one I was involved with, had after school stuff that enabled them to have that second job. Also, many who made only a comparatively little more than that could lose that public assistance because they made too much money to qualify for the assistance. So, if you made, say $1,000 a month before tax, you would lose a $500 a month benefit, which placed you behind the person making only $600 a month. It greatly sickened me.

I have never had an issue with whether or not people are luxurious and extravagant- of course they are allowed to spend their money however they choose. My point is that those people should never entertain the notion that they are somehow not greedy, because that is a load of crap. I mean, that whole Hermes/Oprah thing was a perfect example of how ridiculous this whole money thing has gotten. Her perspective is totally out of whack. Of course, it's easy for her to go see the poor and downtrodden in NOLA with no makeup on when the story is the headline. Then she heads home to her million dollar homes and sleeps on thousand dollar sheets while those with nothing go on just as they were before. I appreciate her gesture, but she shouldn't attempt to take any kind of "generosity credit" for anything because it would be disingenous.

Thank the stars for that, because anyone with a grasp on reality has to see it firsthand. That's why I told our favorite village idiot to go volunteer in a welfare office. The cycle....I think it is generally sociological. It is related to depression, as trite as that sounds, and a mindset that encourages drug use, alcoholism, and hopelessness.

Hopelessness. The is the key right there. Sadly, there are a huge number of Americans who are feeling hopeless right now. That is why every day, with every little bad thing that happens to this administration, I hope it is the begining of the end for them. I have high hopes that indictments are coming at the end of this month. It's got to stop. Say what you will about Clinton but at least he gave us hope. Hell, the man was from Hope.

But the larger question is, even if that revolution happens, what will prevent the people revolting against the revolting people ( :D ) from implementing essentially and after a period of time the same type of system currently in place. History demonstrates that that is generally what happens in application despite any theory espoused at the beginning a la communism and the creation of the USSR and Red China, where even mostly from the beginning the newer haves had waaaay more than essentially the same old have nots despite the guise of everyone is equal, etc.

I think the better solution is to work for change in the current system, which greatly needs to be fixed though I have no clue regarding how to achieve that goal and not violate the Const.

I have to agree with Strand that this is simply a matter of degrees. Of course they look piggy to most everyone. You and I look piggy to a large percentage of the people on earth. Hell, we are. I have read it. I am really glad she wrote that book, and that it has done so well. I worked as a waitress for 14 years (started in college) , and I have even cleaned houses to get by, so her descriptions of her experience were very vivid for me. Fortunately, I did not have a child to raise, and managed to move out of the service sector. I know it is hard for many people to imagine what it would be like to work like crazy, and still not make it.

story
Last year I took my car in for repairs, and decied to take the bus with my son into town. I thought it would be fun - we'd go shopping. We got on the bus, and the driver told me I would have to take my son out of the stroller, and fold it down. So there we were: a wiggling toddler, two bags of groceries (from under the stroller) and a mom trying to collapse the stroller, hold the kid, pay the driver, and get it all to the back of the bus. I had never thought of how difficult it would be for a mother to ride a bus with her child. Never considered it. Mothers do this with multiple children, and they take their kids to day care, and they do it every day. I have empathy for them now, but I didn't before...And yet I still have done anything to help change things.

How do we encourage empathy and understanding, and then enable people to act when they see circumstances that need to change?

Just in case anyone thought I am advocating a communist or socialist system when I mentioned the enormous profits or corporations, I really am not talking about that kind of change, mostly because the former sems impossible with human nature, and the latter isn't lilely in this country, I think.

I just think that the business sector needs to come up with more sustainable business models. If you can't pay your people a living wage, and you can't manufacture produce, or distribute goods without affording to clean up after yourself, then you don't have a good business model, IMO. Start with those requirements, and let the market decide. And if the business fails, then they can "pick themselves up by their bootstaps" and try again. (ha!)

*Ok, I am getting off my soapbox now. Thanks for this thoughtful discussion.*

Yep - the rich (however you arbitrarily define that) apparently never donate to anything you approve of - so they are all a$$holes and no one better say anything different because you know better and any discusssion that they might donate to a worthy cause every now and then when the spirit moves them automatically make the sayer of that an elitist calling for a free pass to the inherently greedy and uncaring rich

Thus, I think the apparently inherently evil rich should stop all donations right now lest they meet with your disapproval and donate for the wrong reasons

BTW - in case you did not know this or could not be bothered to research it due to the automatic venom produced by the thought of the rich doing something good - almost all of those universities you so readily bash have hospitals and other programs that administer to the poor on a regular basis, many have medical research programs that benefit society as a whole, and they have scholarship and outreach programs to help the needy at all levels, which fails to support your hastily drawn and incorrect point :wavey:

On a more personal note, just look at one of our large local charities - AID Atlanta, which clearly administers to the poor and downtrodden in many ways, including education for prevention. A little over 36% (totaling $2,020,857) of its budget comes from the AIDS walk, private donations, and foundations, which are all a form of individual giving as seen here http://www.aidatlanta.org/aboutus/financials.shtml That is a huge amount of money from people when you consider how many charities are competing for that money.

In the end, it is your automatic assumption that the rich never do anything to help the poor that I find incorrect and clearly unsupported by the facts, though IMO they can and should do more.

What I said was, those donations benefit the middle class NOT the poorest of the poor. Most every donation you listed was for schools or environmental preservation (which is a good thing actually) but again, none of those donations went to the poorest. What about money for the homeless? not in your list. money for single moms to pay for childcare? not in your list. money to subsidize transportation? not on your list. things that poor people could actually USE????? NOT ON YOUR LIST. I repeat not. on. your. list.

EDIT: I stand corrected. there is ONE person whose donations actually make sense:
Joan B. Kroc—a bequest of $1.91 billion to 10 organizations. Kroc, who died on Oct. 12, 2003, at age 75, was the widow of Ray A. Kroc, the founder of the McDonald's Corp. Her gifts were: $1.5 billion to the Salvation Army, in Alexandria, Va., to construct and endow up to 50 recreational and educational facilities across the United States; $200 million to National Public Radio to support the network's operating reserves and endowment; $60 million to Ronald McDonald House Charities to be distributed to its programs worldwide; $50 million to the University of Notre Dame to support the Joan B. Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies; $50 million to the University of San Diego to establish the Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies at the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice; $20 million to San Diego Hospice and Palliative Care to support its programs and services; $10 million to the San Diego Opera to support artistic programming; $5 million to KPBS radio and television, in San Diego, to establish an endowment and operating reserve and create a capital-equipment fund; $5 million to the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of San Diego to build a high school; and $500,000 to Mama's Kitchen, a meal-delivery service in San Diego for people with AIDS. Before her death, Kroc gave $5 million to the University of San Diego to endow a lecture series at the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice.

You absolutely hit the nail on the head with the above quote.

No actually he didn't! I wasn't going to bring this up just because it would sound sort of trite but...let's review...what exactly Ann HAS contributed to politics, law, etc...

Coulter is the legal correspondent for Human Events and writes a popular syndicated column for Universal Press Syndicate. She is a frequent guest on many TV shows, including Hannity and Colmes, Wolf Blitzer Reports, At Large With Geraldo Rivera, Scarborough Country, HBO's Real Time with Bill Maher, The O'Reilly Factor, Good Morning America and has been profiled in numerous publications, including TV Guide, the Guardian (UK), the New York Observer, National Journal, Harper's Bazaar, and Elle magazine, among others. She was named one of the top 100 Public Intellectuals by federal judge Richard Posner in 2001.

Coulter clerked for the Honorable Pasco Bowman II of the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit and was an attorney in the Department of Justice Honors Program for outstanding law school graduates. <---- She was actually in Washington helping work on a lot of the legislation that was going on at the time. Yea she really has no clue about what is going on.

After practicing law in private practice in New York City, Coulter worked for the Senate Judiciary Committee, where she handled crime and immigration issues for Senator Spencer Abraham of Michigan. From there, she became a litigator with the Center For Individual Rights in Washington, DC, a public interest law firm dedicated to the defense of individual rights with particular emphasis on freedom of speech, civil rights, and the free exercise of religion.

A Connecticut native, Coulter graduated with honors from Cornell University School of Arts & Sciences, and received her J.D. from University of Michigan Law School, where she was an editor of The Michigan Law Review.

Not only that but of course she was one of a handful of informal legal advisers helping Paula Jones. Ann interviewed Jones and helped write her legal briefs...all this while still working on other cases AND putting together her book "High Crimes and Misdemeanors: The Case Against Bill Clinton". When reporters asked David Schippers, the House Judiciary Committee's chief investigator, for a "road map" to the impeached inquiry, he told them, "Read Ann Coulter's book."

People are always knocking Ann as an "idiot" or blowing her off for her "lack of knowledge", yet they are quick to give a college dropout like Michael Moore praise. I mean Ann Coulter was a constitutional lawyer for God sakes...I think she knows a little bit of what she is talking about.

That's all well and good, but she's not a frequent guest on the only show that really matters. :p

Pffft. She's a dolt. Case closed.

She can have all the book smarts in the world, but none of it really matters because she lacks common sense. I think it's cute that she gives you a stiffy, but your naive view of her is nothing but laughable.

Remember dear - the war in Iraq is going magnificantly and Max Cleland's losing three limbs off of the battle field in Vietnam (where he was decorated) was an irrelevant and fortunate loss for him

I mean Ann Coulter was a constitutional lawyer for God sakes...I think she knows a little bit of what she is talking about. You've missed the point. No one has said that Ms. Coulter lacks intelligence, but if she is aware of "the facts," then she is most certainly ignoring them and/or twisting them to suit her needs.

And how ever impressive her credentials may be, what has she done lately to HELP our country?
Nothing. Nada. Zip. Zilch.

Ms. Coulter is, exactly as Sparky said, a self-aggrandizing opportunist who has made a name for herself by being loud, obnoxious, aggressive and by pandering to the lowest common denominator in her search for fame.

She doesn't care about the state of our country any more than I care if the Steelers go to the Super Bowl. She merely enjoys hearing herself talk, and relishing in the fame and notoriety her shocking statements and viewpoints bring her.

You seem like a nice guy, Brandon. My advice would be to start forming your own opinions, one way or the other, based on factual information, and not on the rhetoric that spews forth from the mouths and pens of megalomaniacal, fame-seeking talking heads.
They're not looking to enlighten you or me, or to make our country a better place, they're simply looking to sell more copies of their next book.

Wow. The first picture of those three looks like a still from a wax musuem. I thought these people had some money. What a cheap wig on Daddy. Bad implants on the Bim. And the teeth on that younger guy... makes Condi Rice look like she had a good orthodontist.

I will say that his father had the most unbelievable townhouse on the Upper East Side. It had a full size swimming pool to the right of the entry hall and about 100 rooms, which he has since sold/lost due to free internet porn.

Here is a pic of it

No, really, I am a huge fan I will admit (and my home is at the www.anncoulter.com message board with lots of other fans...*sigh*). When it comes to Harriet Miers, Ann Coulter is right
The president has always said that he's a "uniter, not a divider." And by God, it turns out that he was right. If it weren't for George W. Bush, we would never, ever find ourselves saying these words: We agree with Ann Coulter.

OK, not on everything. We don't agree that Democrats should be blamed for 9/11. We don't agree that leaders of Muslim countries should be forced to convert to Christianity. And we don't agree that it would have been better if Timothy McVeigh had blown up the New York Times building. But when Coulter starts talking about Harriet Miers -- well, we have to say that Ann speaks for us.

In her latest column, Coulter says Miers is so unqualified for a spot on the Supreme Court that Bush may as well have appointed his chauffeur as the next head of NASA. Coulter says that Bush "could nominate his Scottish terrier Barney, and some conservatives would rush to defend him, claiming to be in possession of secret information convincing them that the pooch is a true conservative and listing Barney's many virtues -- loyalty, courage, never jumps on the furniture."

But there comes a time to draw the line, Coulter says, and that time is now: Whatever Republicans may think of "elites" generally, they ought to understand that the Supreme Court requires a certain level of expertise in matters that might come before the court -- the kind of expertise that Miers' career just doesn't demonstrate.

"However nice, helpful, prompt and tidy she is, Harriet Miers isn't qualified to play a Supreme Court justice on 'The West Wing,' let alone to be a real one," Coulter says. "Both Republicans and Democrats should be alarmed that Bush seems to believe his power to appoint judges is absolute. This is what 'advice and consent' means."

Hey - here is a newsflash

Mary is always correct no matter the facts

BTW - the point was they donate and donate big.

But whatever, you are going to hate them no matter what and you know damn good and well that really rich people give billions a year - but you will never admit that

So -

Oh Danny Boy

Jason, I dont understand why you persistently misread me???? I said there was ONE rich donor I could agree with......and my original comment still stands: All of the donations you listed are NOT going to the poorest of the poor.

I still say the concept of "Noblesse Oblige" has died off, but I can see of course that the rich DO give (although I wish they'd target the poorest people like Joan Kroc), but in reality, the total monies are just a drop in the bucket when you consider the scope of the problem and the numbers of truly needy. But, it is their money and they can do what they like with it.
All Im saying is that the people that need it the most arent seeing it. Thats all Im saying

Having said that........I'd much rather we spend the evening singing Irish ditties than arguing....so: When Irish Eyes Are Smiling is my next request!

Well, earlier, you were seemingly pretty harsh on the rich - but whatever

ALso, Google the term "generosity index" and you will see American (rich to doin ok) are donating a lot of their cashola. That is all I am saying.

Also:

There's a tear in your eye,
And I'm wondering why,
For it never should be there at all.
With such pow'r in your smile,
Sure a stone you'd beguile,
So there's never a teardrop should fall.
When your sweet lilting laughter's
Like some fairy song,
And your eyes twinkle bright as can be;
You should laugh all the while
And all other times smile,
And now, smile a smile for me.

Chorus
When Irish eyes are smiling,
Sure, 'tis like the morn in Spring.
In the lilt of Irish laughter
You can hear the angels sing.
When Irish hearts are happy,
All the world seems bright and gay.
And when Irish eyes are smiling,
Sure, they steal your heart away.

For your smile is a part
Of the love in your heart,
And it makes even sunshine more bright.
Like the linnet's sweet song,
Crooning all the day long,
Comes your laughter and light.
For the springtime of life
Is the sweetest of all
There is ne'er a real care or regret;
And while springtime is ours
Throughout all of youth's hours,
Let us smile each chance we get.

Thanks for the song...

as for the Rich donating, I'll clarify: they apparently DO donate, just not to the poor. Except for Joan Kroc which I said I stand corrected. If more wealthy were like her, true humanitarians, I wouldnt be saying anything.

btw: do you actually know all the words to these songs? Even I dont know all the words!! I used to think Danny Boy was too cliche but after getting the chills just reading the words, I had to re-think that notion!
