I have the feeling this might go somewhere, so I thought I'd start a thread on it.
I think Sister Honey falls somewhere in the Stevie-as-prostitute genre...

I really don't think it's about a lesbian affair or Stevie 'down there'.

hehe...i just can't see Stevie singing about her "down there"...although being with Prince made Sheena Easton sing about it...so, I guess one never knows....

I honestly do not think it's about her muff or coke. That would be completely out of character for La Nicks. Sister Honey is a character she's created to tell a story with metaphors about someone or something in her own life which she often does. We'll never really know so I just go with it.

I agree - I think it's about a meeting between two people or a conversation but not sure exactly what

Question 45 - from Jimmy K.:
One of my favorite songs that you have ever written is "Sister Honey" from your "Rock a Little" album. I know that every one of your songs has a story behind it. I have my own interpretation of what that song is about, but could you please tell me what it's about it in your own words. I was dissapointed that it was never released as a single and still feel it never received the attention it deserves.

Thanks,
Jimmy K., Birmingham, AL

Stevie's answer:

Sister Honey was inspired by my friendship with Les Dudek. We recorded the demo at my house and it was a lot of fun.

Interesting. I just thought it was about about coke since 'Sister Honey' was a slang for it.

maybe so, since he co-wrote it. i just found this interesting interview with Les Dudek:

he talks about Stevie toward the middle part of it....not particularly enlightening on this song, but interesting, anyway

Keep in mind, just because Stevie says a song is inspired by a certain person or incident it doens't mean the song is about that. She can be very tricky about those things obviously because she wants to remain somewhat mysterious.

I really don't think it's about a lesbian affair or Stevie 'down there'.
Exactly what I've always thought - or drugs/addiction in general, and all the excuses you tell yourself to keep taking them.

"Whispering the words 'one more time, baby - just one more time...' "

Of course, it's a multi-layered song, open to interpretation, and easy to apply to a variety of situations - exactly what I love about her lyrics.

Hmmm - maybe Les had somnething to do with the writing because he says:

"Freestyle” was also written by Stevie Nicks. When we wrote “Sister Honey”, the other song we wrote was “Freestyle”

That certainly implies he at least helped with the words.

Here are the words to Freeestyle:

Freestyle

Written: L. Dudek and S. Nicks; Sung: Les Dudek

(She’s not tellin’, she’s not tellin’
She’s not tellin’, she’s not tellin’
Ooh ooh, ooh ooh, ooh ooh, ooh ooh
She’s not tellin’
Ooh ooh, ooh ooh, ooh ooh, ooh ooh)

I haven’t seen you in a long time
It’s been too long
And if she knows she’s not tellin’
It’s been too long
But that’s not a one thing to her
‘Cause only a fool knows

Freestyle run away leavin’ tonight
With an empty heart on an all night flight
Freestyle
Long distant stranger time replaced
With freestyle love on a brand new face
Freestyle

Well it’s still not known to her heart
She’s very alone tonight
She’s up in arms for open hearts
She’s very alone
Only a fool would lie
‘Cause only a fool knows

Freestyle run away leavin’ tonight
With an empty heart on an all night flight
Freestyle
Long distant stranger time replaced
With freestyle love on a brand new face
Freestyle

Freestyle, Freestyle

Would you do it once for her right now
She’s very alone tonight
Well you just might have won the race
But you won’t be alone tonight
Still your heart cries out
And you fall face down

But you don’t learn - You don’t learn
That it’s crazy here right now
But you don’t learn – You don’t learn
Freestyle
You don’t learn – You don’t learn
Freestyle
You don’t learn – You don’t learn
Freestyle, Freestyle

that's a great point! thinking about the "just one more time.." reference, maybe the Dudek interview does make sense, because he talks about the abundance of drugs during that session.
I always seem to be able to apply Stevie's songs to my own dramas, which is, of course, what makes them seem so personal to all of us, and why we love her.

i love this song. i was listening to lindsey's solo albums last week and got a little trippy listening to Trouble:
"let your honey keep you warm"...

what can i say, i'm a total shippah.

obviously she was writing in response to this.

i'm kidding, at least a little bit... ;)

Ghost_Tracker

This is a rare occasion for me but I think this one's about Lindsey.
She's sayin' CATCH UP bud 'cause I'm leavin' you in the dust
and one of these days you're gonna be home watching The Today
Show with Bryant Gumble or maybe some Popular Ex-Cheerleader
hosting and they'll be singing my praises and you'll be kicking yourself,
"buddy." Plus maybe she just wanted to rock (a little).
It also reminds me of Mariah Carey's song where she's singing
about "maybe now you just can't Conceive, that there'll ever be
a time when YOU'LL be wanting ME - just think again 'cause I won't
need your love any more. . . . ." Same thingy, it seems to me.

I think she's also saying that he's claiming that he "just wants
to be friends" but she sees right through that and she sees
(a little...) where things are headed -
basically she's saying, "Don't kid a kidder."
And that maybe he underestimates her - Stevie was maybe just
starting to come out of her shell here, in a way - out from behind
that mirror - and she was saying, "look out bud 'cause one of these
days rich guys are gonna be flying me halfway around the world
and naming horse races after me."

Races are run - and SOME people WIN.

When I played the RAL album for the first time, I just thought it was cool that she was using Gold & Braid lyrics, and looked (in vain) for the connection between the songs.

Then several years later, I was at a party where a girl basically Swiffered a mirror clean with her wannabe-Alanis hairdo (people.were.pissed), and my lightbulb switched on as I was dying laughing. She got several packs of scrunciis for Xmas that year.

Okay, here are the lyrics for final scrutiny. I heard a great interview with her once where she was talking about how she survived living in Hollywood and the music industry. She said that she dyed her hair blonde and played the dumb blonde roll and people liked to keep her around because she made good sandwiches and was pretty but because they wrote her off as being stupid they talked freely in front of her. And she listened and learned and went home and wrote all that stuff down. And she used what she learned to get ahead in the industry. So I really think the line about "don't let that golden hair get in your way" is her telling the guy in the song, "don't dismiss me as some stupid bimbo, I'm the real deal". And I think "hit you with a fury whispering the words one more time, baby" is really sexy. You think this person is just some random chick and next thing you know she totally knocks your socks off and you can't even handle it! You're wiped out and she's going "c'mon baby, one more time". Heh heh.

Leave it to a gay man to see the sexuality in a Stevie song. LOL!

Alright, baby
Well, I think you will like Sister Honey
She will help you
Make up your mind
even if you don't need her
Tell her you need her
She needs you brother
She needs you brother

Strange fascination
Some kind of temptation
To know Sister
Never having allowed yourself
Do you understand the word, pleasure
Well, you say it's just never crossed your mind
And she believes you

Can we still be friends
the answer's always yes
Even best intentions turn around one day
Saying...

Nobody's right, baby
All the time
And a fool never knows what he's leaving behind
So take some time to know the real story
Cause a soul that's true is your ride to glory
Don't let that golden hair get in your way , baby

Can we still be friends
the answer's always yes
Even best intentions turn around one day
Saying...

Come back solemn stranger
It's your last chance
She's almost gone, now
And she'll go fast like a jet plane
And then fast like a star stream
She'll hit you with a fury
Whispering the words one more time, baby
One more time
And she says don't let that golden hair
Get in your way now

Don't forget "Sister Golden Hair" by America -- one of Stevie's favorite songs:

Well I tried to make it Sunday, but I got so damn depressed
That I set my sights on Monday and I got myself undressed
I ain't ready for the altar but I do agree there's times
When a woman sure can be a friend of mine

Well, I keep on thinkin' 'bout you, Sister Golden Hair surprise
And I just can't live without you; can't you see it in my eyes?
I been one poor correspondent, and I been too, too hard to find
But it doesn't mean you ain't been on my mind

Will you meet me in the middle, will you meet me in the air?
Will you love me just a little, just enough to show you care?
Well I tried to fake it, I don't mind sayin', I just can't make it

Well, I keep on thinkin' 'bout you, Sister Golden Hair surprise
And I just can't live without you; can't you see it in my eyes?

The rumour that was going around 15 years ago was that Les Dudek (born in Rhode Island, by the way  ) told a fan or two that Stevie called something private 'Sister Honey" and he said that she should write a song about it.
There is an interview where Stevie does say "I can't write a song about that" But she never says just what 'that" is.

I think that it could be one of her writing around sex songs.

I've always thought is was a sexual song, but the drug refreences make a little more sense. If it was a coke song, it seems like she'd sound a little more upset, as she did in "battle", "best i can", "etc etc. interesting! plus, the "she'll go fast" lines just remind me of her speeding around, so it could be about drugs.
