View Full Version : The Official Post-Season Baseball Thread

Either David or I was bound to create a thread eventually, so I figure, hey, why not. :p
It's that time of the year again. Playoff time! Today's results:
Cardinals - 8
Padres - 5
White Sox - 14
Red Sox - 2
Current score: Yankees 4, Angels 0. Top 5th.
So we have a would-be blow out (San Diego came back) and a full fledged massacre. A pretty shocking start to this post season. Thoughts?

that I wouldve started a thread too...
The Cards looked their usual selves (Shouldve buried the Padres instead of let 'em slowly get back into the game), but the BoSox looked & played like **** (Where did the BoSo vaunted offense go???) and the Yanks look great (Thus far).

You're right. The Red Sox got nothing out of their pitchers, and the Cards bullpen almost blew it. Meanwhile, Mike Mussina, Robinson Cano and Jason Giambi are doing quite nicely in Anaheim. ;)

shouldnt that be the Braves (Or George Bush for that matter) that sucks?? Cause everyone knows today is the start of the yearly migration to destinations away from Atlanta for their players after yet another Braves collapse in the post-season...Hell, I set my vacation to the Braves collapse each and every October since it is as predictable as another Texas Longhorn choke against the Oklahoma Gooners, I meant Sooners in Dallas.

Buffalo Bills in a Super Bowl, A World Series victory over the Indians doesnt count for anything...Sorry Brave fans (Which I remember, don't Atlanta's own fans never show up for home playoff games cause even they know the outcome in advance???)

You know, I have a little story to share with you. The AAA team there the 89'ers I think is still a affiliate of the Rangers. I heard recently that Ivan Rodriguez is getting divorsed, and I remember reading that right before he was called up to the Rangers in '91, he and his wife married at hom plate there. U remember that?

that happened at the old 89ers stadium at the Oklahoma State Fairground (Which is now a parking lot)in OKC.
I was never a Rangers fan until the past couple of years (After "Pay-Rod" left...While I like the Yanks, I dont care for that money grubbing "Pay-Rod") and that is mainly because we are Oklahoma RedHawks fans (Still the AAA affiliate of the Rangers...Just a new & better name and a great stadium in downtown OKC.)

Game 7-Jack Morris shutting the Braves down

Yeah, '87 was not wuite as good, although I still HATE WHitey Herzog to this day for disrespecting the Twins SOOOOO much that world series. He kept whining about how the Metrodome wasnt "Real" baseball and that they wouldve won if they had Jack Clark who was hurt. I know the Twins were only 85-77 that year, but If I ever see him I'll tell him the same line that Jack Nicholson said to Tom Cruise in A Few Good Men "YOU CANT HANDLE THE TRUTH!!!!!!" Either win or shut up WHitey, no excuses!!!

Angels are the only AL team to have a winning record vs the Yankees since Joe Torre became manager. Plus, REMEMBER 2002, the WORLD CHAMPION Anaheim Angels!!!!! They SPANKED the Yanks then, and they beat 'em throughout THIS year (hence their home field advantage this series)...one game doesn't make a series. Angels all the way in 2005!!!
Astros up 10-3 in top of 8th :D

Loved the game, but Jesus, our seats! They weren't the Crawford boxes. It was a room in the adjoining building that is still actually part of the stadium and has a private room with TV's and a bar and you can go up to the roof on...and we had access to the "standing" areas of the stadium as well. So we spent the whole night up on the roof of this building...awesome weather! Would've been cool, but Clemens requested that the roof to the stadium be closed so that the fan noise would be louder and motivate the team. So I spent all night moving my head and body in weird directions trying to see between beams into the stadium! Well cokes were free and we managed to smuggle some flasks with rum in, so the night wasn't so bad!
Tomorrow baby, the Astros take it!

Sorry that your seats weren't that great. Sounds like you made the best of it, anyway. Isn't it great to be there when they win?

Yes it is! Well, it's looking like we're gonna have to do a 5th game unless something turns around in the 8th. :(

Atlanta's so-called "America's Team"? Yeah right, Didnt ask this American for his opinion...And of course Atlanta can sit on their asses with the rest of America and watch the Astros play the Cards!

I'm utterly depressed by the White Sox going to the World Series! I'm a Cub's fan and seeing the Sox win is almost as bad as watching the Cubs choke everytime they get close. The only consolation is that we moved 800 miles away from Chicago this year, so I don't have to hear the Sox fans gloat. Fortunately, nobody cares about the Sox down here.
And I've resigned myself to never seeing the Cubs make it to a World Series in my lifetime. :(

Listen, I'm a Red Sox fan, and if we can do it so can you guys. I'm glad to see you stand by your loyalties to the Cubs. I have a friend that "Claims" to be rooting for the White Sox, although I've known him for 20 years and all he's ever talked about is the Cubs. I'd like to think so, but I lost all hope after the 2003 playoffs. I'm not even as into baseball as I used to be, but that totally shattered my heart.

I will never root for the Sox! Too many bad memories of Sox fans gloating everytime the Cubs choked...
I think it's kinda hard for a lot of people living outside of Chicago to understand that most Cubs fans can't stand the Sox, and vice versa. Just the way it's always been. I don't know if other cities with 2 teams are like that? Not sure if Mets fans hate the Yankess and vice versa?
My own family is split down the middle. In fact, I'm surprised I haven't gotten a call from my dad yet, asking what the Cubs did yesterday! My husband has already gotten about 7 such calls from friends who are Sox fans.

Heh heh! My mom is in her mid-60's, and has been waiting her whole life. She's convinced of the same thing!
I will definitely be praying for a National league win in the World Series! The sadist in me is also hoping the Sox will be 5 outs from winning the series, when a fan interferes with a ball... or a ball goes through the first baseman's legs, blowing an easy out... or a black cat is thrown on the field and they fall apart... or some other Cub-like "catastrophe", causing them to lose their cool and blow the series!

Orioles hire Mazzone as new manager
Longtime Braves pitching coach ends talks with Yanks, joins Baltimore
BALTIMORE - Pitching coach Leo Mazzone and the Baltimore Orioles reached agreement on a three-year contract Wednesday night, hours after the Atlanta Braves coach ended discussions with the New York Yankees.
"The deal is finished business," according to a source close to the negotiations, who spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity.
Mazzone, considered to be one of the finest pitching coaches in the majors, has been in the Atlanta organization since 1979 and was pitching coach of the Braves since 1990. He will replace Ray Miller, who served as pitching coach of the Orioles since June 26, 2004.
Orioles executive vice president Mike Flanagan declined comment, and Baltimore manager Sam Perlozzo, a longtime friend of Mazzone, did not return a phone call from The Associated Press.
Mazzone, 57, and Perlozzo grew up together in Cumberland, Md. The competed on different teams in American Legion ball, then became best friends. Perlozzo was the best man at Mazzone's wedding.
Earlier Wednesday, the Yankees ended talks with Mazzone after their three-day window to negotiate with him expired.
"Both sides agreed to end their discussions without resolution," Yankees spokesman Jason Zillo said.
Mazzone is credited with helping develop Greg Maddux, John Smoltz and Tom Glavine. From 1992 through this season, the Braves ranked first or second in the NL in ERA in every year but two.
Perlozzo was pleased with Miller's performance as pitching coach, but has said he wanted to work with Mazzone. Miller, who had surgery last week to repair an aortic aneurysm, gave Perlozzo permission to talk to another pitching coach before his surgery.

Lets see the Braves win another division in 2006, I think that streak will finally come to an end.
