I listened to a 1991 tour today and she sounded worse than 1989. It's 2 years later. What do you guys think? Was she worse in 91 than 89? She wasn't sober by then so two more years of Klonopin..

I def. think so. Sadly, I missed the 91 tour because of Law School  - but she apparently was out of it by then - between pot, Klonopin, Valium, drinking, etc. - she is way lucky to have come out of that  But, that which does not kill us makes us stronger

It had it's moments. Some of the boots I've heard, it seems like she is trying to sing over the band. It's my least favorite of all of her touring bands.

She wasn't sober by then so two more years of Klonopin..I thought she sounded quite a bit worse in '91 than in '89. On both tours, she refused to sing with any vibrato, which stripped her delivery of dynamics, but at least in '89 she was able to hit tone most of the time, & had greater control & range.
In contrast, by 1991, she consistently missed tone by a half step, she lost upper range (for example, she could not have sung & held the "Alice" note the way she did in 1989). The lack of control, the nonpliability & the tonelessness were all aggravated by an aggressively metal-minded band who made the worst possible mistakes in interpreting her songs instrumentally: broken-armed Les Dudek had no more feel for playing Stevie Nicks or Fleetwood Mac material than the average dunderhead in a downtown bar, & Cat Gray must have thought he was playing Emerson Lake & Palmer material half the time, considering how ridiculously frenzied & over-the-top his piano arrangements were. Plus, the whole group played at earsplitting levels of sludge (unlike old Fleetwood Mac, who also played at earsplitting levels but infused the extreme volume with dynamicism) & the sound guy that year was either deaf or asleep. Finally, her stage clothes in 1991 were once described -- & very astutely, I should add -- as "the Sunday clothes of working-class matrons on their way to church in Biloxi circa 1951."
I took some friends of mine for their very first Stevie Nicks concert to the show at Concord Pavilion, & I was utterly embarrassed (although my friends were polite). But, not surprisingly, they have never wanted to see another Stevie Nicks concert.
Here's what I liked about the 1991 tour: the set, & Eddie M.'s saxophone solo on "If Anyone Falls"

David I really appriciate your insight into these things (although I don't always understand the technical stuff). You've obviously had some musical training and I envy you for that so please feel free to keep talking cause I I'll be listening!
I agree abou the 91' tour from the boots that I've heard. That is why I don't understand why people are always saying TOSOTM tour was so bad and she just stood there because this one seems worse. I have a video from 1991 and I'm going to watch it this weekend.

Okay, how many of us are running to do Stevie Dance Mixes now? LOL!!!!
If I could get my hands on an acapella Stand Back I would probably have a heart attack! LOL!
You know, I'm reading all this guff about the Mirror tour and I really enjoyed it. The Street Angel tour I will admit I was not crazy about, but then again it was more about some crap that was happening around me more than Stevie's performance. The friends I came with spend the whole show talking... "What song is this? Do you think she's going to sing Gypsy? I don't know this, is this Gypsy? Why won't she sing Gypsy, I'm mad." Oh it was really annoying. Then some guy behind me was harrassing me the whole time because I was standing up in front of him. Everyone around us was standing but because I was in front of him he was all mad. So he started thowing stuff at me, crumbled up paper, hot dogs, whatever he had on him. I swear I'm not making this up. And when we went to leave he spat on me! So yeah, it was my least favorite concert. Funny thing is that I have a video of that show to commemorate the occasion. LOL!!!

While it's true that vocally she was better in 1989 on the "OSOTM" tour than in 1991 on the "Whole Lotta Trouble" tour, visually the 1991 tour was better...
The "OSOTM" tour was probably the most boring "rock" show she ever put on.. Her setlist was laced with her adult contemporary staples and her band was really awful... The keyboardist was especially bad as his synths during "Stand Back" made it sound like a nursery rhyme...
in contrast, the 1991 tour was much more rockin'... true, the band was more metal than any of her other bands before or since, but i'll take a "rockin" version of "Outside The Rain" over a watered down AC version any day, thanks..
I personally would have much rather have seen a 1991 Stevie concert over a 1989 one... Of all the bootleg vids i have, her 1989 shows are the ones I watch the least... why? cuz they are so boring :distress:

I don't know about the whole OSOTM tour but the one show I saw on that tour was pretty bad. :( She literally stood at the microphone and sang in a monotone. There was no emotion in her voice whatsoever. And she moved very little.
In '91, I saw her at Red Rocks. She was far more animated and did a blistering Rhiannon. She also nailed Talk To Me. You should have heard the audience response to If Anyone Falls. They were surprised and delighted. It was a really good show. But in the boots I heard of other shows later, the band was definitely overpowering her and there was not a lot of emotion in her voice which was reminiscent of the OSOTM show I saw in October '89.

Both of those tours seem to have been hit or miss.
I suspect that she was a bit more consistent during OSOTM simply because by 1991 she had already been on drugs, in one form or another, for an additional 3 years. I saw her in 89 and thought the show was okay, I later went on to hear some bootlegs of very good shows from that tour, so I wrote off my show as being just an off night...her mom had been ill I heard.
I saw the Timespace tour in Mansfield and I, too, took a friend with me, and I have to say that I was very very very dissappointed with her performance. I'm quoting someone here when I say that during "i need to know" her band wanted to go 75mph and she could only muster 45 mph. She sang the entire performance about 20 feet from the stage (like the red rox video), surrounded by 5 or 6 HUGE sound monitors, when she would walk from the side of the stage to the mic she had to be accompanied by someone, who treated her as the frail and elderly woman she was at that point. It was pathetic. I was 2nd row and you could tell that she really couldn't even SEE . I did get to shake her hand during a tepid Edge and her smile was COMPLETELY plastered on, her eyes were glassy and dead, she didn't even blink. I was grossed out (sorry folks, but I was) Her poor health meant she had NO breath behind her voice, no lung power (hence the mono-tone and vibrato-less performance) and her band sucked. The sound man sucked...all of these people on her payroll doing a lousy job, it was disgusting. I was so embarrassed for her. I was so bummed out. The Boston Globe reviewer ripped her apart saying something about her caring more about donuts than the show...which really looked to be the case. No one knew about the "K" she was on. It was a terrible show. These Never-ending intro/outros to every song, bad singing, and silly clothing (even by her standards). I never ever thought I'd see her perform again cos I didn't think anyone would show up after a few more performances at her current level.
Then, I heard the street angel cd and I thought...well, she sounds better, and then I saw the SA tour in Mansfield and held my breath as she came out to the music of Dreams (no Outside the Rain that night) and then she opened her mouth...and she could sing again, and then she talked to the crowd, and she was awake again, and then during a truly powerful Edge, she took the mike off of the stand and sat down during for the middle part (without anyone helping her) and I knew then, that all was right again in Stevie land.

The sound man sucked...all of these people on her payroll doing a lousy job, it was disgusting. That's how you can always tell that Stevie is in a bad way: by the quality of the job her crew & entourage are doing.

I went home from the Street Angel show, with a spring & a bounce in my step, & .... after many years of avoiding the fans & not wanting to trade or collect any more .... found myself a Goldmine & started contacting people again in the classifieds. That's when I contacted Debbie & Maureen & Paolo & several other people, excited about Stevie Nicks music again. It was the Street Angel show at Arco Arena that made me want to start swapping tapes again, & I hadn't wanted to do that for six or seven years. It was like a miracle. It was a Stevie miracle.

Wow Dan! That was really powerfull. I'm kind of glad I wasn't there to witness Stevie at this point in her career because to be honest I don't know how it would have affected me. Thank you so much for sharing your insight. It means a lot to me as I am the one that originally brought upTOSOTM vs. Timespace tours.
This makes me all the more happy to see Stevie where she is today, happy and healthy after coming from what you've described. Some people never bounce back from that state but our girl did. She is truly an inspiration to me.
