I was reading on a different board on how some people's parents bought them a car for their 16th birthday. I mean, fab cars. Brand new Beamers, Audi's.... My folks bought me a 10 year old Mustang for my 16th birthday. And, where I grew up at, I had hit the holy grail. No one elses parents spent the money to buy them a car. So, in your neck of the woods, did you and your friends get cars for your 16 birthday?

1973 (or maybe it was a 74) Pontiac LeMans that was my grandmother's racy sports car until my brother wrecked it, then he drove it until I got it.

I got a new honda accord as a surprise on my birthday. The salesman pretended to show me junky cars, and said that he had one more to show me, and around the corner was my new car with "congratulations stephanie" on the windshield.

My first car was a '97 Corvette. My uncle is a poilce officer and got it at an auction. I honestly think it used to belong to a drug dealer.

1996 Toyota Camry LE. I got it the summer before I turned 16, and it was a great car until I totaled it last year.

My parents bought me a 1985 Honda Prelude for my 16th birthday. I loved that car and drove it for 10 years.

My first "car" was a motorcycle. A screaming fast 82 Yamaha Virago that desperately wished it was a Harley. A stainless V-twin engine that carried me many miles, and of course I was a maniac and rode on freeways without a helmet. Many times under the influence of an array of chemicals. Never had an accident. Thankfully. My second "car" was a metallic root beer brown 77 Toyota pickup. I loved that little truck. It ran like a top and I could fix everything on it, and did, except for the engine and the transmission. It was like working on a lawnmower. I am certain it is still on the road somewhere. That thing was indestructible. It's name was Rudy.

BTW, both bought and paid for by me.

I'm still driving my first car, a beige '91 Ford Escort. My mom was so thrilled when me and my brother got our licenses, since it meant no more having to drive us everywhere. She was more than happy to get us each a nice cheap car to drive, lol.

My father was a mechanic, so my first car, like almost everything my mother drove until my sister and I were out of school, was a former wreck. He baught it cheap, did the labor and gave it to me. Early 80's Turismo, I believe. Loved the hatchback!

The year: 1991

The driver ed. car I learned on: 1990 Chevy Corsica

The car my dad bought for me for $1000: a dark brown 1977 Chevy Monte Carlo with tan vinyl interior. We called it the Disco Cruiser. Lots of good times in that car.

Talk about a boat - holy cow, this thing was big. I loved it, and now I can drive pretty much any car, no matter what the size. I drove it until some assclown in a brand new Lincoln Mark VIII slammed on his brakes behind me, propelled over a snow bank, became airborne & came down onto/into the side of my car. I was heartbroken. :distress:

Mine was an 86 Subaru GL (Grand Luxury.... ) 2 door hatch back in powder blue. It was hilarious! It looked alot like the Murph Mobile from Waynes World (minus the flames on the side). It had no power steering and I had to role the window down with a wrench. BUT it had a back windsheild wiper so how could I complain? ;) I had alot of fun in that car. It ran for 3 years and I paid $400 for it.

1973: For HS graduation, my parents gave me THEIR well worn in 1967 VW camper bus. Yes, I WAS the real-life Jeff Spicoli after that.

It lasted until 1981, when the engine LITERALLY blew up in middle of nowhere in Montana. It became a trailer for the next 6 months (we towed it around with the drummer's big Chevy van), as my band toured Alberta & Saskatchewan, then I sold it once I got back to California. The buyer was going to restore it and I had him promise to bring by for me to see once it was done. Totally forgot about it for about a year. Then out of the blue I get a phone call...they guy asked if it was a good time to come over to show off the van since he'd just had it painted (which apparently was the final step in his process) and that he'd be by in "about 15 minutes". Never showed up. About 4 months later, I got a call from him. He apologized for not making it by, but a drunk driver ran a red-light and totalled the van...he'd only gotten out of the hospital a couple of days before that call. Never talked to him again after that. But, I still have this guilt about it. If I hadn't made him promise to come over & show off the van, in all probability he wouldn't have been in that spot at that moment.

It was pretty bad. But I didn't have a scratch on me thanks to the massive girth of my car. :D

My first car was a re-built 32 Ford Coupe. It was beautiful ~ black with burgundy interior but the doors were suicide doors and one kept5 malfunctioning and it couldn’t go over the speed bump so my dad bought and fixed up a 1982 Red Trans Am with the bird on the hood. I thought I was hot shot.

That reminds me of my girlfriend's car. It was an early 70's Chrysler Newport, 4 door. That thing was a beast. She used to pick up about 4 of us girl's and I remember in the dead of winter, we'd be sitting in the back seat freezing our asses off, yelling "TURN THE FURNACE UP!"

My first car was a 1972 Buick Skylark Convertible. It was my parents car and I bought it from them I think around 1980. It was chocolate brown. That thing was smoken. I used to be the most popular girl in high school because of it  :D

I was pretty popular because of my little **** Mustang. I was one of the few that had a car, so I left it unlocked, and everyone was welcome to cut class in it. I was pretty well loved because of it!

Oh hells no, I did not get a car for my 16th birthday! I am still of the opinion that anyone who gets their own vehicle on their 16th birthday, however crappy it is, is a bit spoiled.

My family (there were four of us--Mom, Dad, me, and my younger sister) made do w/ one car until I was 17 and we bought a second used car. It was a second family car though, not mine--by then, 3 of the 4 of us had jobs so we had to share the two cars. I still took the bus to school until the day I graduated.

I didn't get my own car until I was a sophomore in college--I paid my Dad $2000 for one of the used cars, a 1993 white Geo Prism, which I loved--it was a cute little car w/ a sunroof. What's funny is that at the time, the car was really worth about $5000, but my dad said I could pay him the rest back later. Then, when I graduated and my mom and dad were going through a slightly rough time financially, they couldn't really get me a nice college graduation gift. So my gift was that my dad waived the additional cost of the used Prism that I had already been driving and paying insurance on for two years, ;) . So that was my graduation gift, and it was the closest I ever got to being given a car! I'm not complaining though--I just think it's frickin' amazing when 16 year-olds think their parents owe them a car just because they turned 16 (I know most 16-year-olds don't feel that way, but the ones who do need an attitude adjustment).

was a 1970 Chevy Chevelle, gray with a black canvas top. I got it when I was maybe 18 or 19. I loved that car. Boy did she have power! She really sucked up the gas though. Anyway, I sold it to my brother, who was very imature. He got angry at my mother or something one night, hopped in the car & wrecked. Luckily both he & the person he hit were OK, but the car was totaled. I went with my mom to the place it was towed to look at it. I cried when I saw it. I couldn't help it. It was my first car. Then I got thinking maybe I should have never have sold it to my brother & then he wouldn't have wrecked, etc. But he needed a car & I sold it to him for a cheap price so he'd have a car, so what could I do? My parents' pressured me into selling it to him. So basically, it was his first car, too.

1959 Ford Anglia. 3 speed. Let my "good buddy" drive it one night while we were out cruisin'. He ran a stop sign (couldn't figure out the brake/clutch relationship) and totalled it. He ran from the scene. I took the blame. Lost my license at the tender age of 16. A serious life lesson learned a long time ago... ;)

I bought a white 1961 VW Beetle, when I turned 18, with money I had earned working at Music Plus. I loved that car! I replaced most of the interior myself, and had dried roses wound around the metal bars of the visors. It had an awesome stereo.

Once day, I drove back from a class, down the back side of the Palos Verdes Peninsula (on a road with no stop signs,) listening to "Houses of the Holy" with the sun in my eyes, when I came upon a stopped 1968 Cadillac. My brakes locked, and...well, hitting a cadillac with a beetle is like swinging a paper lantern into a wall. The car never ran again. I still feel guilty for killing it.
