I think she did not like her vocal, which is far rawer than the released one.
But, the music is far better in the demo and IMO.

When REM came out with those - it was soooo left field. I remember an interview with Michael Stipe at the time where he said it was a large risk the record comp. did not want to take because how many mandolins were on the radio in 1991

THIS is the version I always listen to and that I'm always talkin' about! I'm pretty sure this is the original version of the song, meaning this is the cut that was produced by Glyn Johns with plans of it being on the record. But after all the drama between Stevie and Glyn, Stevie went back, as we all know, and re recorded some of the albums tracks, and also remixed some of it as well. Why didn't she just leave it alone? You're guess is as good as mine! :p
P.S. The guitar solo is worth the listen, trust me! LOVE IT!!!

I have the CD. I can upload it to yousendit if you want mp3's. Otherwise I don't have anyplace else to post it.
I like the stripped down Docklands and ethereal opening to Greta on this CD. It also has God's Garden, Inspiration and the tropical version of If You Were My Love.

I wondered that as well. In an interview at the time, La Nicks was lamenting that the Glyn Johns stuff did not have enough guitar on them and no Waddy, which she said she should have known was a problem. Then, after, she added Waddy on them. So, I wonder if this heavy guitar is Waddy added later. I guess we will never know.
As an aside, I always wondered if someone threatened a law suit when they were putting the final tracks on.

The production on what made the record is muddy and over done, IMO. So if this is what Glyn Johns was doing with her music for this record, I'm sort of stumped as to why it didn't work out.

This version of Jane is quite a revelation! It totally reminds of me of "Love's a Hard Game to Play." It's got the overpowering drums, the cliched lyrics, etc... all it needs is a sizzling guitar solo and it's 1989 all over again!

For "Maybe Love," I prefer the radio remix most of all.
And "Inspiration" and "God's Garden" are definitely better as they appear on the Japanese import.
By the way, there's an alternative take of "Kick It" out there, but I've never heard it in as good of a quality as these tracks... would anyone happen to have a better copy of that one?

Mirage needs the remix treatment badly. I read someone on here once saying that the album sounds much warmer on vinyl and it's true. The CD really does it a disservice. If they put If you Were My Love and Smile At You on there, I could die happy.

There are a couple of other things I'd like to see on the Mirage remix if the gods are listening: that slow rehearsal of Gyspy where Stevie is doing that Ronnie Specter/Be My Baby thing and Lindsey is singing in a falsetto and the live rehearsal version of Straight Back. That thing was nothing short of blistering.

Fascinating listening. My face is still twisted up with a furrowed brow, squinted Zellwegger eyes, and a puckered mouth after hearing If You Were My Love.
WTF ?
I hate all these songs. Always have, pretty much. Nonetheless, it was really great to hear different versions. They sound like they are from a different planet. Greta, IMO is actually better. It was unpredictable. And Docklands was very strange. I almost liked it. So completely out there. What in HELL were they thinking ? It was like a train hit a helicopter, a submarine, a produce truck and a van full of paint all at once.

I love all these songs, thanks Chris! Before I downloaded the Docklands, I thought it was the old demo. But this is one I hadn't heard before. It sounds like the album track only without the electric guitars. In other words, it kind of sounds like an earlier studio mix.
Do you have the old demo -- the sound is okay on the old demo but it could be better. I love that demo because it's a different mood surrounding this very beautiful & lyrically lovely song -- a song i wish Stevie had written because it has her trademark imagery & tone. Docklands rules!

I never would have thought that I would have something you didn't have. I'm glad everyone has enjoyed these and the Cal Jam clip you posted.
I don't think I have the old demo, unless I just don't remember it. I love the "I was there when they took you away from me, I'll be there when they let you go" line.
Also, on this version it seems like they are not using a full drum kit. It sounds like maybe just Peter Michael (?) doing percussion.

Is that what she's saying?
Yes! I remember cracking up when you first sent them to me last year. Truly funny stuff because it fits nowhere in the context of the song.
What's the line about the seagulls?
I forget, but I'm going to bust them out now.

man, i realize i'm way behind on this but i have to say that if this version of maybe love had wound up on the album i would have been even more indifferent.
her vocals are horrible in my opinion. and i almost never say that. i mean, i listen to seven wonders and WISYA again with glee. but this track is unforgivable.
I tried to like the mix better, but i even prefer the album version of that. Especially the subtle guitar in the second verse...
never thought i'd say it, but it's good ol' SA in it's final form for me. (that is, if the rest of the tracks sound as banal as this MLWCYM)

I never would have thought that I would have something you didn't have. :laugh:I don't remember hearing it among my stuff, but I have a DVD's worth of master reel garbage here that I probably haven't heard 75 percent of. There aren't enough hours in the day, & all that.
You have heard the Docklands "demo." I don't even know whether it's a demo. It has a very rich, full-bodied harmony on the vocals -- verses & chorus. It's taken at a slower pace than the album. The instrumentation during the chorus is some thick, rich string pads. During the instrumental tags, somebody seems to be whistling (?)
To someone who finds the song as incomparably brilliant as I do, the "demo" creates a whole new experience of aesthetic pleasure, a different facet of this multifaceted gem among songs. I would say that Docklands contains some of the greatest lyrics ever penned, cinematic in their imagery.

I agree. Docklands is such a cool song, especially for the imagery.

Okay, first of all, thank you so much for posting the SA demos. Very good stuff. My least favorite of the albums (although Rose Gardens is very high on the list of my Stevie favorites). These demos are great.
Dreammms, if you could post the OSOTM masters, I would love you forever. That is my favorite Stevie album. I think I would swoon. :)

How does yelling "Oh, no, not the blackbird!" fit into Long Way To Go in any manner?

"Down the seagulls
Like a blackbird
Ooh, she went like a seagull
Like a blackbird
Have fun tell the world
Ooh, down the seagull
Like a blackbird
Bye bye blackbird"
What does it mean? I'm very  .

I suspect that the people who roam the docklands are familiar with seagulls.

I think she's talking about the way seagulls and blackbirds sqwawk and make lots of noise...that seems to fit into "have fun tell the world..."
imagery born from too much time staring at the ocean, perhaps...hehe

I can't believe I'm saying this but that Jane master version is amazing! I actually like it. It could be possibe that I like it because there is such a disparity between it and the original which we all know is not too great but I am really impressed with this piano version. I actually may listen to it a few more times. I can't believe the other version made the album over this. This sounds like a decent song and the piano is so pretty I can overlook some of the awful lyrics.

Really? I think the piano makes it sound amateurish. And that vocal just drones on. She sounds like she's singing it as she's getting a pedicure because she's already read through People twice and there's nothing better to do.
The master reel version of Greta is quite fabulous, though. Not a big fan of the song, but that version lends it a better sense of fun and frolic instead of the half-baked attempt at ersatz new wave that's on the album. Mindless fluff that is quite aurally pleasing, it is.

Yes that's me, Bella Donna ;).
I was totally waiting for you to see that! I so thought of you this morning Jason when I was listening to it in the car on the way to work. The sad part is the album version just doesn't do it justice. If this is the version that had been put on the album I bet a lot more people would like the song. Now instead of the forgotten chimpanzee Jane is the forgotten song :(
And now that I can deal with the music I really appreciate the message.

I don't know, I like the album version better. It builds up to the bridge and then really drives it home while the demo is more linear and (dare I say it) a little boring.
Although I do love the RAL demo. I wish there was a better version of it. I've only ever heard the one that sounds like it had been transferred from several cassettes recorded at very low volume so it's full of tape hiss.

A little late getting to this thread...back to "Maybe Love..."
While I like this demo, I prefer the SA version...mainly because the demo sounds like it's "solo Stevie"; whereas, the album version sounds more "Fleetwood Mac-ish". And, I'll take FMac over solo sounds ANYTIME.
