What a buzz! They were all having such a good time - all silly and shiny and happy!

Bob Welch has a little Shields and Yarnell 70's mime look going there, especially when he breaks into that goofdance. I love his voice.

I haven't seen enough concert footage of FM, but she seems more playful here, is it possible that Stevie had a better time playing without them?

Very cool Bob Welch show. So nice that Mick and Stevie guest appeared for him. They did that a few times for Mr. Welch, one being the Bob Welch and Friends video. Which is also a CD now.

Thanks for the archive footage!

No, FMac wasn't on the bill. Mick & Stevie were guests of Bob's.

The artist lineup for the day was:

Bob Welch
Heart
Santana
Dave Mason Band
Ted Nugent
Foreigner
Aerosmith
Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush

If that does not put a smile on your face - well I think nothing will, esp. when she misses the harmony on the first chorus and sort of fights the guitarist for the mic. and her harmony at 3:47 right before Welch goes to the crowd - WOW

Also, I get that La Nicks is SMOKIN' HOT - but Welch is, simply, MAGNIFICENT on this

Oh - to have rock and roll like this these days

Interestingly, Stevie was rarely as energetic with FM as she was in this clip with Welch. With FM, she was sort of stand offish in the FM FM days and in Rumors and Tusk, she was way more energetic than after that, but she still rarely ran all over the stage like she does in this clip.

Also, early in her solo career, she certainly ran everywhere as evidenced by the US Festival speaker jumping.

What do you all think?

LOL - she certainly was animated on the Cal Jam clip

I always wonder how much of that is coke and how much is the real La Nicks in her youth. I get that once the coke stopped, her performances were way less spontaneous and intense, but she was also 40 or so years old by then. Oh well, I guess we will never know

I thought the guitarist was really cute, so I Googled, and saw that Bob Welch used Pat Travers' band, so wouldn't the guitarist be Pat Thrall?
Or are there 3 guitarists total on stage? I don't know, and I don't actually remember Pat Travers band visually (only remember "Boom Boom, Out Go the Lights")
I know* you guys will enlighten me.

Interesting how he backed down, no?
Never, never mess with '70s-calibre Nicks.
But I bet she would have been perfectly happy to share
the mike - I think maybe he freaked a little (nervous, etc.)
Personally I would've freaked just seeing that CROWD!
Must've been 80 to 100 thousand.
I went to the Jones Beach show this summer - 6,000 people -
Stevie must've been like, "You have GOT to be f'g kidding me!" ;)
But you wouldn't believe The Roar when she came out. . . .

Could be wrong but I think they Officially Crashed the Party.Well, Bob probably knew they were coming. But I don't think Stevie & Mick were billed, if that's what you mean.
God Bless the '70s!Yeah, baby. You know, I think Stevie's younger fans may not be aware of that, but that was actually one of the biggest things Stevie was known for when she was in her 20s & 30s -- showing up unbilled at all sorts of concerts just for the sheer joy she had in singalongs.

I saw Stevie singalong at a John Stewart concert at a little club called the Palomino just a couple of weeks after the Tusk tour ended. Shots have circulated of that appearance. Here's one:

<img src="http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b298/cbrook/Palomino1980.jpg" alt="Image hosted by Photobucket.com">

Even though she was a huge star at the time, she used to do stuff like this all time. I did not see her singalong with Rundgren at his May 23, 1978, show at the Roxy (although we have pirate radio recordings of the numbers: Hello It's Me, Just One Victory & Hang On Sloopy with Stevie on them), but I bet it would be a really cool thing to see -- if any Rundgren fan happened to have filmed it. Rolling Stone even ran a Random Note on it.

Thanks for sharing Dave. It's not a favorite performance of mine though. She's acting like a spoiled child in the video or just down right goofy. Her antics are over the top and her vocals are bad and out of place. Sometimes less is more, and this is definitely one of those times. Gimme the Today Show Stevie over this anyday.

Just opinion but -
her antics onstage, back then, are what got her in to a position where
27 years later she would be one of the few people called to come perform
on The Today Show. It reminds me of a quote at the beginning of a
Stephen King book - "I did all the rest so that I could do this."
Plus I think maybe she was just plain having fun and doing what she does - singing and dancing.
Also not to be grim but there really was a widespread feeling back then
that there might not be any tomorrow. So she was enjoying herself
to the max there. "To hell with what anybody thinks, I'm gonna have
FUN!" :D

You think?! I'd say it was more that Stevie wrote a myriad of classic songs like "Landslide", "Dreams" and "Stand Back", singing them with one of the most distinguished voices in rock music. The Cal Jam performance(antics) and the like are what made her laughable and not taken as a serious artist by many people. I'd also like to say that I think Warner Bros. and the fact that Stevie is a classy lady with a heart of gold were the main reasons she was on the Today Show. :)

Well, maybe there's something I'm not getting but all I saw
was Stevie rocking out and having a good time. Along with about
a hundred thousand of her closest friends.
HALF of 'em probably couldn't even see her ANY-way!!!
How much was a TICKET back then ANY-way, ten bucks!???

Any-way, I was just sayin' that in her own Rock way -
Stevie "networked" extensively when she was still sorta starting out -
notice how many different musicians she sung backup for?
The tours she "tagged along" on?
Notice how she had a big, happy, friendly smile for everybody on that
stage? And if you watch closely, i m o, she didn't "bully" Whimpy Mike
Guy out of there - she just smiled at him and let him do whatever he
was gonna do - I think she probably would have been perfectly happy
to share the mike - but I think maybe he kinda got nervous, and so she
was perfectly happy to have the mike all to herself, also.

ANY-way all I was tryin' to say is that I think all that stuff taken
together, that she did back then, is related to her long-term
success and the fact that she's still cookin' now, almost 30 years later.
Not putting him down, I mean, I don't know anything about him,
but just for contrast, HOW'S Bob Welch doing now????

A) It wasn't HER show...it was a Bob Welch gig; she was just there "jammin'' with a pal. And, probably HAD she been MORE like this with Fleetwood Mac than the sulky hippie-gypsy-witch, she might HAVE been taken more seriously.

Could be wrong but I think maybe the not being taken seriously
started first and the sulking started second.
There was a LOOOOT of chauvanism back then, and they just viewed
Stevie as a "Rock Chick" when she first joined the band.
The whole "Other Side of the Mirror" thing.
I wonder how many times the typical person would have to be told,
"SHUT up, your opinion doesn't count" before they just give up and
go home?
And maybe they never flat-out said that -
but then, they did.
And yeah I know she wasn't an  -
but neither were they.
Hmmm?
