View Full Version : Band Face Off - Round 13
trackaghost

It was a close race, but Bob Dylan narrowly beat out Neil Young, winning by 22 votes to 21. But in Young's defense, there's certainly no shame in losing to one of the greatest singer-songwriters ever, and I'm sure if Neil had to vote in Round 12, he would have cast his vote for Mr Dylan as well.
So, onto Round 13, and three extremely talented ladies who once worked together under the name Trio. But which of them is your favourite?
The results so far:
Round 1: Petty defeats Springsteen - 36 to 19
Round 2: Led Zeppelin defeat The Who - 22 to 18
Round 3: Madonna defeats Sheryl Crow/Kate Bush - 24 to 12/10
Round 4: The Beatles defeat Rolling Stones/U2 - 23 to 16/14
Round 5: Guns N Roses defeat Bon Jovi/Metallica - 17 to 13/12
Round 6: Heart defeat Blondie/The Pretenders - 23 to 15/6
Round 7: The Beach Boys defeat The Kinks/The Byrds - 24 to 10/10
Round 8: Elvis Presley defeats Johnny Cash/Roy Orbison - 19 to 18/6
Round 9: Abba defeats The Carpenters - 25 to 15
Round 10: Prince defeats Jimi Hendrix/Lenny Kravitz - 24 to 14/3
Round 11: No Doubt defeat Garbage/Hole - 25 to 10/9
Round 12: Bob Dylan defeats Neil Young - 22 to 21
The polls are still open, vote now!

Emmylou Harris
The other two are phenomenal, but they truly don't hold a candle to Emmylou. They haven't released albums that I consider to be amongst the greatest ever recorded, Emmylou has. And she has that voice. It's angelic and it's incomparable to other female country voices. Emmylou also gets bonus points for growing as an artist and being better now than she was thirty years ago, imo. She hadn't really written her own songs until a little while back (save The Ballad of Sally Rose album), but once she started, they blew away anything written by Dolly. Michelangelo, The Pearl, Here I Am, Lost Unto This World, etc. Words cannot describe how awesome she is.
Since both Sharon and I voted for Emmylou, I expect the tradition of another artist winning to continue.

Hard to choose between Dolly and Emmylou. Dolly is so over the top and honest that it's hard not to like her. I've followed Emmylou's career forever and have many of her early albums on vinyl. I think her strength is how understated she is. Her voice alone can change a cover song in to being her own. I remember seeing her in concert at a small club in San Diego. Innocence Mission opened for her and it was obvious from the beginning that the "country" crowd couldn't be bothered. All it took was Emmylou coming out and singing background vocals alongside Karen Perris and the crowd instantly accepted them. I gave up on Linda Ronstadt a long time ago...

I will have to check it out. I used to be a huge Linda Ronstadt fan. She rubbed me the wrong way a couple of times. She was scheduled to perform after a San Diego State football game. She flew in to the stadium in a helicopter, got out, sang maybe 3 songs, and got back in the helicopter and left. She never even acknowledged the crowd with a simple hello. Also, the whole fiasco on the Tonight Show with Robin from the Howard Stern show.
I think Linda has the best voice, but I like Dolly and her whole "thing" better. She gets my vote.

It was a hoot. Too bad Linda had never listened to the Stern show she was ranting about. Robin called her on it and she didn't know what to say. I think she was just trying to channel her hispanic roots to sell more of her Canciones de mi Padre albums.

What happened?
Robin was on Leno to promote her book and then Linda came on to sing. After she sang her song, she went over and lit into Robin over her and Howard's show, how they were digusting for making jokes about Selena, and all that jazz. She went ape****, but admitted to never hearing their show, so Robin ripped her a new one and told her she should listen to the show before going crazy over it. Leno, like the ass that he is, jumped in at the end and said his show was great because he lets people speak their minds.

I voted for emmylou, although the other two come really close. Let's say that the work that miss Harris did on the last album of Bright Eyes makes the difference for me: to work with young talent and add something wicked to that mix makes my day, not only in quality but also in sympathy. Emmylou Rules.

Leno is an ass. Stern's show is lame and crass and whatever. Linda should've seen one before commenting, right though she may have been.
Hmmm, makes me want to vote for her. :D
If I remember right (and I usually don't :o) , the whole issue was over the fact that when Howard Stern used to report celebrity deaths or murders of some kind there would be the sound of guns shooting in the background as the intro to the segment. It was part of the show but Linda chose to take offense to it because Selena was hispanic and, at the time, so was Linda.

What she said.
Woah, does she? I hear her on Land Locked Blues, what other tunes is she on?
Only three songs, actually. "Land Locked Blues," "We Are Nowhere And It's Now," and I believe "Old Soul Song (For The New World Order)."
It's for stuff like this that I have to give Emmylou my vote, I think. Not only has she created some absolutely brilliant music in her own right, but she adds a certain grace, dignity and beauty to every song she sings with another artist. There's a reason that "duet with/backing vocals by Emmylou Harris" has become something of a cliche these days.
And boy do I feel sorry for you if you missed her touring with Elvis Costello for a month or two this summer.

You think that's why she took offense? Possible. I don't think Miss Linda likes guns or anything like them at any time, though. Member her little political speachy recently????
It came across as a sour attempt at grandstanding. Very poor form. She ended up looking as if she lacked the taste that she belligerently accused Robin of not possessing.

Sorry! The show in the Chicago area was indeed one of the best shows I've been to this year and was easily the most songs I've ever heard at a single concert - 37! Nearly three hours worth, and so many songs I'd never seen EC perform live before. (I've seen Elvis live six times in four years, yet I've seen him perform over a hundred different songs - hint hint, various members of Fleetwood Mac...)
Thank you. I'll have to listen to that album again. I haven't listened to it since I saw Bright Eyes play earlier this year, I must admit.
I'm afraid the Elvis/Emmylou pairing didn't reach these shores as far as I know. Sounds fab though.
I'm listening to IWAIM right now as a result of this thread, as well, and it's really a great album. So many folks seem to get hung up on labeling Conor Oberst as too emo or too this or too that, and it all seems so besides the point. This is just a wonderful country-folk offering from a very talented songwriter. (And actually, speaking of great country-folk albums in 2005, has anybody else picked up Mr Adams' Jacksonville City Nights?)
EC and EH (Larry Campell was also along for this tour, playing any number of instruments) didn't make it to Europe, alas, but find a bootleg if you can!

I'm going to have to sit this one out. I'm not at all familiar with the work of any of these ladies so it wouldn't be fair for me to vote.
In fact, the only one of them that I own anything from is Emmylou Harris... and that's only because she's collaborated with both John Zambetti and Warren Zevon and I own their albums, but not hers.
 Sharon, are you telepathic?! I was going to propose these three ladies for a face off! Um, well, I guess it's logical to put them together since they recorded together.. anyway, the choice is easy.

I love Dolly, don't get me wrong, but she's written fewer songs than Emmylou that have just blown my ass away. In "Hour of Gold," when Emmylou sings "To bind the fatal wound and catch your last sweet breath," the effect is devastating. It's one of those moments in a song that's so beyond words that you can't even comprehend how powerful it is; you just feel it and that's enough. That voice forged with those amazing lyrics that she writes has an otherworldly effect on me. To think that it's only been in the past few years that she's been recording her own material is amazing to me. What stopped her from doing it all of these years?

To state that Emmylou's dozen or so self written songs she has done blow away anything Dolly has done sounds silly. I don't suspect you have even heard 25% of Dolly's catalogue.
