View Full Version : What does your family think of Stevie and your being a fan of hers?

I started mulling this over when I saw another post by Ryan saying his dad thinks Stevie's a crack whore, and then decided to ask this based on my own experience.

My mom called me to let me know Stevie was on the Today show, and later on when I talked to her, she said, "Eh, she sounded flat on that first song and I turned the TV off half-way." Then she proceeded to tell me my grandma watched and didn't like the music and thought her hair looked ridiculous flying all over the place and was in her face.

To be fair, my mom's got totally different music interests and told me, "If you like her, that's great. You don't like some of the music I listen to - we all have our own interests and opinions" and then told me Stevie looked very good for her age, but maybe should consider cutting her hair.

OK...maybe I'm sensitive, but these remarks (esp. Grandma's) cut me like a knife! This isn't even a woman I know, yet my hackles get raised anytime anyone says negative things about her and I feel I have to rush to her defense. I spent 10 minutes trying to tell my mom how great she was this summer and that she sounded better in her concerts than on the Today show.

So why is this? I just find it odd that I'm so offended when someone puts down this lady who is really just a virtual stranger to me. Anyone else feel this way?

my mom really likes her.. she was the reason i got into Stevie and Fleetwood Mac in the first place.. One of her good friends invited her to see Stevie on the "Whole Lotta Trouble" tour in 1991. It was at that point that my mom rented "Live at Red Rocks" from the video store.. I watched it with her and the rest was history...

My dad on the other hand didn't like her at all... he used to say she was "demonic" and "evil".. :(

I do not believe you have any responsibilty to defend Stevie...she is a living legend...one of the all time top selling recording artists ever, and a member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

The fact that Stevie still can pack most concert venues, and is asked to perfrom on the Today Show is testament to her on going success. There are tons of "classic rock" artists who are still out there performing and were extremely successful in the 70's and 80's but are really not relevant today. (Example...bands I love like REO Speedwagon, Styx, ZZ Top, Foreigner, Pat Benatar...are all great but are not nearly as popular as Stevie is today.)

Heres the deal...music is ART,...like a sculpture or a painting...it is an expression of the ARTIST...some ART appeals to certain individuals...and some does not. The painting I may choose to hang in my living room may not be appealing to you...but would I walk in your house and say it looks awful? Of course not.

Some people love genres of music I can't stand...like polka, or bluegrass. But I respect those artists, and would not be critical of someone who gets pleasure out of listening to them.

So...your only responsibilty is to love Stevie...cherish the music, the songs, and the lyrics...use her words to make your life more meaniningful and enjoyable...and if you can share it with others, then by all means do so. But don't worry what others think.

If we wanted to be "mainstream" we would be logged into MTV.com reading about Kanye West.

My mother can't stand her. She likes Lindsey the most (but that doesn't say a whole lot) and she tolerates Christine.

I think what finally broke the camel's back was "Candlebright." I had it playing when I took her to a doctor's appointment a while back and it just annoyed the **** out of her. She turned it off and asked me how I could listen to such a shrill, grating fool, and that Stevie's voice just pierces through her in the most unpleasant way.

Not that I gave a ****; I considered it my revenge for having to listen to the Eagles and the Beatles on a constant basis growing up. I hate both of them. o_O

When I first became a fan, and all I really had was "The Dance," it really drove my parents insane - because that's all I played, and I BLASTED IT.
It got to the point where my mom came knocking on my door and pleaded with me to play something else ANYTHING ELSE, just not Fleetwood Mac.
She also yelled at me to "Get your own music!," meaning that somehow I had no right to listen to the music of her generation.

Now my family just ignores it. They've resigned themselves to hearing it all the time, and to the fact that where once there were Nirvana posters, there now hang photos and posters of people who, in many cases, are older than my parents.

My Mom has been crazy for FM from the get go, though that's not how I became a fan. She had 45's like Tusk & Ebony Eyes, but that's about it. Mom loves that I love SN/FM, and she likes the fact that anywhere she goes and hears SN/FM she'll think of me. I've taken my mother to many a show, including the crazy $900 Dance fiasco. Dad, he's s'ok with it. Likes Chris the most I think, if he had to choose. The only major time I recall him most figuring how much I loved SN was him keeping hidden a full size advert for the Wild Heart tour. We were dirt poor and there was just no way in hell I could have gone to that =0( Him acknowledging that to hide it was in my best interest, as I'd have screamed a fit to go, shows he understands how much SN/FM means to me.

My newest conquest was my boss coming into work the other day and saying "you know Anita I'm haunted." "Anytime I hear SN or FM I think of you." Bwahahahaha. Another Victory! :blob2:

I started liking Fleetwood Mac from my mom, so she doesn't think I'm crazy. My dad never liked her or FM. He's a hardcore Eagles fan. My dad actually tells me if he sees she's gunna be on TV, or if she's in the newspaper. They just think it's insane that I insist on seeing the same show multiple times. Like, when I saw Stevie three times this summer. They didn't understand that. But it doesn't really bug them

More than half of my family are Stevie/FM freaks, especially my one aunt. When Belladonna came out I was in the fanclub and had up all the posters you got when you joined in my room. My mom made me take them down when her born-again boyfriend said Stevie was a witch!

My dad no, he calls her miss monotone, with the same rhythm band, he likes the 50's tunes, and big band music. My Stepdad witch is no longer with us any more , did not like her music, he liked 50's oldies and big band music. one my sisters does not like her and calls her a druggie, she likes Pat Benater,Huey Lewis and John Mellencamp and my other sister says her music can be tolerated just little bit,and she likes Celine Dion,Josh Groban ,Easylistening flavored tunes,So it looks like my moms on my side on this one,She even remember watching Stevie on the HBO special with me when it was first aired on HBO in 1982.my mom also love Stevie's wardrobe.I wish I can turn the rest of my family to like Stevie.

Uhhmmmmm - Stevie's a Rock Star.
Do you WANT your Mom and Grandma to like her?

Have you ever seen the "Twisted Sister" video?
I'll bet you have a Stevie Nicks picture on your uniform....
(Or at least downloaded on your computer.)
The parents say, "WHO ARE you? Where do you COME from?
WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DO with YOUR LIFE!???"
And their kids say, "I WANNA ROCK!"

Was your Mom an Elvis fan????
I wonder if your Grandma said, "Well, I'm sure he's very NICE but. . . ."

Anyway, in my case, my Mom is a fairly conservative Catholic
who has her own way of looking at the world, so she feels very
strongly that Stevie is a different person than her who has been
in a different environment than her and led a different kind of life.
Despite best efforts, I haven't been able to get her to sit through
all of "Live in Boston" - she claimed she was "too busy" but the
truth of it was she just didn't want to. But she did watch
"Beautiful Child" with me and liked it a lot, and a while back had
watched "Silver Spring" on "The Dance" and said "That was very
NICE!" As for the rest, she knows the story or at least has
inferred the general idea, but just doesn't care either way -
it's just simply not part of her "culture."
Managed to show my Dad "Live in Boston," and he liked it and
definitely saw how much talent they have, but I don't think he's
gonna be going out of his way to go to a concert!
He did go out and buy a Greatest Hits cassette a few
years ago - so it's not like if he's oblivious.
As for my "fandom" they're like, "AHHH, whateva, least he's not
in jail!"

P.S. - in your Grandma's day, perhaps "ladies didn't ACT that way."
Something, I suspect, that Stevie is extremely aware of. . . .
"Rock on, GDW"

Uhhmmmmm - Stevie's a Rock Star.
Do you WANT your Mom and Grandma to like her? , Ghost Tracker. I always thought my mom was a fan of FM because I remember finding a tape of theirs as a little girl, but I think it was just something my grandfather found and gave her and she never listened to it.

Anyway, I was thinking about this more after I posted, and no, I wouldn't want my grandmother to be a fan I guess. She wears polyester pants and has a tight curly perm, so that doesn't quite jive with the Stevie lifestyle, I'd say. (Nothing against my granny - she's just from another generation...)

My mom, on the other hand, can't stop singing the praises of Perry Como and Mel Torme. There's a bunch of others that I can't remember too. Their music just makes me yawn.

So I guess it really is to each his own. No one in my family could figure out why I went to multiple concerts either. :p

My mother is the one that started this whole obsession. She became a fan in high school when Rhiannon came out and has been one ever since. There was always FM/SN music playing when I was growing up, so the blame lies with her.

My family doesn't like or dislike her, but they love her because she makes me happy. And my Mom & brother went to the WH, RAL, and Tango shows with me, and we had a great time. (Check out David's "Who's more stoned...?" thread from a week ago for more details. :D )

They were really scared for a few years when my fandom went supernova - obsessively collecting everything even remotely related to Stevie. I don't do that any more, thankfully. I decided the music was most important to me, and all the rest had to go. And now with the Internet, I can usually find just about any photo or interview I want to recollect - so why do I need an actual copy collecting dust and taking up space?

And they *tried* to make fun of me for the obsessive collecting a few times, until I pointed out my Mom's several-thousand-plus romance book collection, or my brother's 10 boxes of Tazmanian Devil collectibles, or my Dad's abolutely massive set of tools (does anyone really need 47 flathead screwdrivers?). At least my interest was with a living, breathing, producing artist.

and Joni Mitchell collections???
Or her thousands upon thousands of journals?

My family pretty much thinks I'm crazy too. My sister claims to not like Stevie, but she's admitted to liking a few songs and has actually seen her in concert- I 've brought her to 2 Stevie shows and one Fleetwood Mac one. My parents had a couple Mac albums and Bella Donna, but were never hardcore fans...my dad said he saw them a few times back in the day though. My mom went to the Stevie/Don show with me this summer and LOVED it. She even bought a Stevie shirt there. It's so weird seeing her wearing it, haha. One of my aunts is both a FM and Stevie fan (although not as big a fan as me), and another aunt likes Fleetwood Mac, but when I asked her if she wanted to go see Stevie this summer she somehow didn't know she ever had a solo career!

Most of my friends think I'm crazy too, and often tease me about loving a goat. :mad:So I have to defend Stevie a lot too...especially when I saw her twice in one week this summer, and got up early to watch The Today Show...they all know that Stevie's the only thing that could get me up that early!

My family, friends, and co-workers tolerate my obsession. My co-workers even prod my patients into saying things about Stevie or Fm just to 'get my goat' and stand out in the hallway and listen to the whole set up. My husband says if it makes me happy, he's all for it! And the kids....well, they were named after Stevie, Rhiannon, and Christopher....so they know the obsession has run deep for a long time.

Let's see... my oldest brother convinced me to buy a computer back in 1997 so I could find Stevie Nicks memorabilia. He thinks it's cool to be a fan.

My mother likes Dreams, Silver Springs and Rhiannon but not the newer stuff because of the change in voice. Awhile back she was going thru stuff in the garage and found some very old cassette tapes, Wild Heart and the FM white album. She "gave" them to me for Christmas. That's her way of encouraging my fan activity. ;)

My stepmother sends me clippings, although she hasn't sent one in a long time. She encourages my being a fan in this way because she likes Stevie for the whole Earth Mother, mystical goddess thing and the fact that she's overcome adversity.

The people at work have gotten over thinking I'm nuts and giving me a hard time about it. I've managed to drag most of them to other concerts with me over the years and we've always have a great time listening to wonderful music. :woohoo:

My 9 year old granddaughter loves to wear lace, velvet and boots. She can pick a Stevie Nicks song out in a store very easily. Her favorite movie is Praticle Magic. She also loves to sing Silver Springs karaoke-style and has her Stevie song preferences. So she's into it too. It gives us something to bond over. :xoxo:

My daughter went to Vegas with me and thought it was crazy when everyone cheered every time Stevie made a gesture. She's not so much into it, but has friends who are into Stevie, so she doesn't say much about my being a big fan.

I'm certainly not one who feels the need to defend Stevie when others speak ill of her, at least if it's a legitimate criticism or some silly little thing like making fun of her wardrobe or her hair, but then my family also really enjoys Stevie's music. Actually, when the TISL tour was announced and we realized that she wasn't initially coming to Florida, we took a trip to Atlanta and made a weekend of it. And it was a great show, even if the Chastain audience lived up to its stereotypes.

Curious to know what the age demographic is here.

After reading through the "What Does Your Family Think" thread, I was really suprised how young some (most?; all?) of the Ledgie's are - and this would be a good, remarkable thing. Given the variety of music genre that's on the market these days, to me it's amazing how FM/Stevie et. al. have generated a younger demo. following. That to me demonstrates how truly enigmatic(?) Stevie is. Any thoughts/facts on the age groups here?

Well, I drive my sister (who lives with me for the time being) insane, or at least that is what she said to me. She likes the music, always liked it, and when I got home a couple of weeks ago, she was even watching the DR doc, which led to me answering all kinds of questions for the next hour. So she is interested. She tolerates me being obsessed, but only because she is familiar with the concept. She is obsessed with something herself, and together with my Mac/Stevie obsession, I have always been an XF freak. But when I put on The Dance dvd (or anything else really) for the gazillionth time, there is definitely some eye rolling action on her part.

Now, my dad is the one I stole the Rumours album (vinyl) from. So he definitely listened to the music. He kept going back and forth through the years about liking them (but he always had a thing for Stevie, in his words: She's a fox!) but he always says to me, if it has to be anyone you are obsessed with, Fleetwood Mac is a good choice.

Then I have two dear friends, who are Stones fans, but they always said that Fleetwood Mac would be their second choice. So it's all good whenever they come over, we trade some bootlegs, watch some dvd's, listen to some tunes.

So all in all, I get hardly any hardship from anyone, except for a few friends here and there who love to refer to them as stoned hippies whenever I mention them, so I just don't mention them around those friends. ;) Then again, whenever they see something they think I don't have, or whenever there is something on TV about them, they do call me.

My dad once laughed at Stevie's antics during "Gold Dust Woman" in The Dance.

My mum likes Stevie's voice and always recognizes it even though she's heard it in its different incarnations.

My sister has become a mini-fan of sorts, she really likes the Nicksfiles and listens to Enchanted a lot, she's even enjoyed watching a few concert DVDs with me.

My friends couldn't care less about Stevie, actually.

But this is Finland, the country that has about four Stevie fans in total. :D

Well, my mom and dad like Stevie and FM, but they get annoyed with me when I play them too much. Last May they went with me to the SYW concert, and my mom and her best friend went to see Stevie in July, so... I guess they're ok with it.

My sister is constantly calling me obsessed and making fun of Stevie, and it's starting to piss me off!

The only person who supports my Stevie-loving is my Grandfather. He asked some dude he knows that works with Stevie (or something like that) to try and get her to dedicate Landslide to me. I'm 35 -

I exist in my own little world of Stevie and Fleetwood Mac fandom. My parents? Could not care less - and to be honest, I could not care less if they like them or not. When I got into music, I certainly didn't care if they liked or listened to what I listened to. I discovered Stevie and FM when I was 17 - and quickly became a HUGE fan. My mother and my sister know that I travel to other cities to see them - but they choose not to talk to me about it. I think they believe it's not really real if they don't acknowledge it. Last year after Detroit, I just had to call my sister and tell her my "encounter" story - and how I wound up getting Stevie's ribbons from her mic, but her reaction was sort of like, "oh, my God, you're a freak. If I change the subject, it'll go away."

That's the family.

The friends? Well, my best friend knows about my love to a certain extent - but she doesn't know I come here everyday, or that I went to an out of town show last summer with someone I met here. A couple of other friends know, and make fun of me for it. Boyfriends, except for one, have always teased me and made fun of me for it. As a result, I hide it. Most people in my life just have no idea how important Stevie's music is, and I kind of like it that way. It's a personal thing.

My mother always told me she hated Stevie because of her voice - she couldn't stand the vibrato. A couple of weeks ago, my mom's siter was over and we were playing The Very Best of FM and having some beers. My aunt said something to the effect of , "Stevie Nicks was so sexy! I would have gone for her." My mom said whenever Stevie came on TV, she would get jealous cause my father would always watch her and thought she was hot. Anyway, my mom hates most of the music I listen to.

That? Is awesome.

Uh... my mom thinks I'm a moron. She usually feels that way about whatever I like, though.
However, she did think Insider, Live was really pretty.
My dad recently said "oh, yeah, Stevie would probably be my favorite singer from that time". Although, I think he's lying, as FM was never mentioned when I was growing up. Or played on purpose. Why is he lying? Beats me. Maybe he did like her - it's not like we bought records hardly at all when I was young, mainly just listened to the radio.

Both my parents would and have hated me for spending money to go see Mac/Stevie. So, basically, I don't tell them about it. And when I did tell them about it, the ticket price reported was magically cut in half. And they still thought that was too much money.
They don't know I was in Vegas last May, that's for sure.
It's nice that I don't really have to visit them if I don't want to, or even call them regularly.
