View Full Version : West Coast Ledgies Unite!!!
At SapphireSister's suggestion, we're polling fellow west coast ledgies for a suggested location for a proposed Stevie-themed event. Others should feel free to vote as well, only if they would be attending! ;)

Themes: if it's in 2006, we could celebrate 25 year anniversary of Bella Donna, or we can do it to celebrate her birthday if we wait until May, or we can do something in her honor like make it a fundraiser for AHI or for the soldiers at Walter Reed.

umm...how about Vegas?
I'm sure you could rent out a room in a hotel....maybe  ....and there's lots to do there.
um...all the people that live in LA will want it there, and the same thing for Northern Ca.
We'd probably have to have separate ones.
Maybe we can do 2?
I'd go to L.A. if the southerners came to ours... :)

I live in Los Angeles, but I'd travel up to the Bay Area because it's so much prettier & cooler. When you're meeting fellow ledgies, you get nervous & you sweat. So the air temperature should be below 70, with plenty of cleansing, cool breeze, preferably with a hint of sea brine.
We could have an excellent ledgie picnic at Golden Gate Park, & then trip in to see the planetarium show & the dinosaurs. Then over to the Cliff House for crab cocktail & vodka tonics. Then a nice long walk through the park grounds.

If you stay along the coast, there's Monterey, but that's not halfway, that's a lot closer to San Fran.

Oh, it'll be well, well below 70, even in July! I call that "cool breeze" a "biting foggy wind".
;^)
But you are right, it is an amazing glorious City, and the park would be a good place to get together. In fact, the weather makes it possible to show off velvet coats and hats, etc.
That'd be easy for me, as I just moved south to Santa cruz after 17 years in the City, and I have some friends still up there I could stay with.

Sigh. Thanks for that view.
Santa Cruz has beautiful beaches, but they aren't the same. Your View is looking ove to Riviera Village, where I lived, just off the Esplanade, until I was 11. It sure has spiffed up since I was a kid in the 70's, it was a little shabbier and funkier then. Every time I visit my mom, I think it is starting to look like Santa Barbara. (hey, that would be a nice place for a gathering)
Well, it's not so bad, I've got redwoods out my back window. Now I am a "lady from the mountain", or "lady from the fountain" as my toddler likes to call it.

A little suggestion...
If the idea is to get the West Coast Ledgies together, might it be a better idea to make the event Fleetwood Mac themed rather than Stevie? That way those of us who are more into other members/incarnations won't feel left out or alienated?
I don't know, maybe I'm just speaking for myself, but if a Fleetwood Mac themed event were held in San Francisco (L.A. is out of the question), I might try to find a way to make it. If the theme is strictly Stevie, I won't even consider it.

So many really beautiful places that would be fitting of a gathering in honor of a beautiful person...Sausalito is north of San Francisco -- no sense in doing that (unless we went to Crescent City with its extraordinary tsunami museum).
Big Sur isn't an appropriate spot for a group of us to lodge. Monterey is a strong possibility -- or even better, Pacific Grove.
Santa Barbara area is a possibility, as is a bit further south in Ventura.
I like the idea of heading to Placerville for some hangtown fries. And Amber can show us around the Gold Country.
Hmmm... I don't think anyone will come up HERE... so I'll say San Francisco.
Good choice :wavey:

Yes, I would rather it be Fleetwood Mac.
If there is a consideration of heading further North (it doesn't seem likely) then Guerneville would be fun, and there are many affordable lodging possibilities there, next to the russian river. Also, Santa Cruz and Monterey bay have a lot of rentable "retreat" centers, and some even have music stages, but then the group would be sort of isolated. It's true that Big Sur would not be appropriate, except there is this one funky place called the Fernwood Resort, and they have been booking bands from San Francisco.
I was thinking that if the event were held in LA, it would be cool to find some old deco hotel - used to go to a club that was held at the old Embassy - something with a ballroom.
I guess I am getting a little ahead of myself...I am new here...

Lord Have Mercy. That would probably be expensive. Even a dump here is five hundred to a thousand bucks for a BALLROOM. Can't imagine we would have that many people. But it is a grand idea. I could go North or stay in LA. As long as I get to meet Amber and give her some grief.

It looks like SF is the logical choice here according to the voting. So let's start planning the date and location. Someone from up North should help out here :). I wouldn't mind ending up at a kareoke bar to sing some Stevie/FM hits. We could all make fun of eachother. Any suggestions?

Sorry, I was thinking too big, although I *was* imagining a shabby if once-elegant hotel. I guess there really aren't any of those anymore. I actually have no idea how many people show up at a gathering like this - have never been to one.
Here is a beautiful venue in the City, above Cafe Du Nord. I suppose it would be too expensive, and too large.

And, I really think we should have the thing at the bar by my house. They have a screen, a dancefloor, it's just about the right size, there's parking, it's easy to find, it's already a gay bar, and they might actually let us do an event. Karaoke girl would probably work it, too - though she now hates me. But I could still get her to do it. (by asking my friend Khrista to ask her... ) Oh, and it won't be quite as cold. Plus, we might not have to reserve it, and still cool people would come who like Stevie/Mac - I'd just flyer a bit, and voila.

Oh, I hate theatre. I think it's a dead elitist art form and boring as hell to boot. But it's a benefit and I am doing a friend a favor. You know I have such a big heart.
Actually, of course it would be great to get drunk and ride my bike home, but I actually think it's a good and easy place.
I mean, i understand that some people want a whole SF adventure, but if we're at a Mac/Stevie shindig, we'll just be mostly inside the bar anyways, at least that one night. It's true I don't think the city is very convenient, though. Tons of stuff is far apart, it's a bitch to park and drive in, it's freezing, and it's not especially friendly, IMO. Plus, it seems like it would be hard to engineer something there. Who here actually lives in the city? Only BombaySaphire3. It also seems like it might be harder to get a place in the city to let us set something like this up. (maybe not, though). Probably it will definitely be more expensive.
Anyway - no big, if someone can work it good. I don't think I'll be able to, but hey, I'm no party planner. Also, did you guys notice, for Travis's DC party, he's not closing the venue down just for the event. :)

If it's going to be in SF someone from up there should try to find a spot since I'm not all tha familiar with the area. By that i mostly mean the crazy plant life. With the houses. There are the most gorgeous streets within a few blocks of my house - so many different kinds of plants and trees in one place!!! there are specific streets I bike/walk/blade down because there are amazing plants/trees in peoples yards. Down the entire street.
Heh, Sorry. :p It amazes me is why I say that.
Yeah, it's definitely a great place for photos. Hills, oceans, bridges, plants, people, wildlife, weird coastal towns that are gorgeous.....
I have to visit that area and take some photos! Rhode Island does have some nice places, too but I just never seem to get to explore too much. I am hopefully going to get out and do some shooting tomorrow.

To me, a convention would be a lot more interesting than a "get-together," which might be nothing more than spending the evening in a bar trying to talk to fellow ledgies over the thumping noise of a dance club -- I have no interest in that, so if that's what's it's shaping up to be, I will bow out & wish everyone a good time. I think an event like this should use the early Mac fan conventions in '90 & '92 as blueprints. The '92 event, for example, was held over a three-day weekend & had the following schedule:
Friday
6:30 p.m. - Pick up registration packets & registration for art/photo contest
7 p.m. - Welcome
7:15 p.m. - Ice breaker, hors d'oeuvres, door prizes & cash bar
8:45 p.m. - Speaker David Williams
10:15 p.m. - Jolande Groenenboem (from Holland) performs "Stand Back" & "Rhiannon" (accompaniment by Sija Kieboom on "Stand Back")
10:30 p.m. - Barbara McLuin leads an FM singalong
Midnight - End of program
Saturday
8:30 to 11 a.m. - Dealer setup time
11 a.m. to noon - Last chance to register for art/photo contest
11 a.m. to 4 p.m. - Traders market, Fleetwood Mac exhibit, art/photo contest, video & audio presentations, card signing, trivia questions, door prizes
3 to 4 p.m. - Auction for the City of Hope
4 to 6:30 p.m. - Open time
6:30 p.m. - Opening words & contest results
6:45 p.m. - sit-down dinner served, cash bar, door prizes
8:15 p.m. - Speaker Frank Harding, Fleetwood Mac historian & personal friend of band members
11 p.m. - Stevie Nicks showcase
11:30 p.m. - Barbara McLuin pays tribute to Stevie Nicks (songs include "Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You" & "Beauty & the Beast")
Sunday
8:30 to 11 a.m. - Dealer setup time
11 a.m. to 2 p.m. - Traders market, Fleetwood Mac exhibit, video/audio presentations, card signing, trivia questions, door prizes
3 p.m. - End of program
This gives some idea of how a group of people can put together a full, interesting weekend for Mac fans, including those who are traveling in from out of state.

I wouldn't mind ending up at a kareoke bar to sing some Stevie/FM hits. We could all make fun of eachother. Any suggestions?
We could go to the Mint, karaoke bar on Market Street. They have Stand Back, SDMHA, MLWCYM, Edge of 17, Landslide, Dreams, Rhiannon, Sorcerer, Everyday, and probably more by now. And you can book a party there and get blocks of seats reserved.

I would be up for that but I'm afraid some other people would want something more if they were to fly out or make a long drive to attend. I just don't know what else we could do. A whole convention takes a lot of time and money and energy and it doesn't seem like anyone wants to plan it.

Yeah, I just meant the karaoke thing in addition to whatever else. But you've hit on the rub--takes people to plan these things. I'd be willing to help plan something manageable, like a party, but a convention is out of my league.

Ditto.
I guess I should've realized you don't make these things magically happen just by posting a thread... :o
That said, I do love The Mint.

Not really. In between San Fran & L.A. is Fresno, so you can imagine no one wants to meet there.
If you stay along the coast, there's Monterey, but that's not halfway, that's a lot closer to San Fran.
What about my Morro Bay or Cambria suggestion  ...did everybody just skip that? or just decide to ignore it?
David, did I meet you at the convention? That was a fun weekend, for sure! I would love to go to another well planned out one...
~Barbara *McLuin*

I went there, when I visited SF, and met Anita (Silent Garbo) there, we had a fun time there, she & I were both dressed in pretty "Stevie wear"....it was a very nice crowd for a "karaoke" bar....Everyone loved Stevie there, for sure!
Remember, Anita? I enjoyed meeting you....I choose to let bygones be such...I hope you are well...
Bright blessings, Barbara

David, did I meet you at the convention? That was a fun weekend, for sure!Nope. By that time, I had already turned against the fans, so I didn't attend either of the two Texas conventions. David Allee went, however.
My fan-gathering years were from late '70s to mid '80s, the generation of fans that included Aaron Muentz, Roland Benoit, Jill Brewer, Debbie DiStefano, Kip Lupton, etc. We used to go hang out at the beach in back of Stevie's Marina del Rey condo & take pictures of ourselves throwing wet sand rockets at her glass panes. She loved it! She'd turn to Gabrielle (her assistant at the time) & say, "Look at all my adorable fans, lobbing missiles at my home!" She was sooo cuuuute!!!

Hell, I even love Pismo Beach. We could all get oceanfront rooms at Sandcastle Inn, & we could fish off the pier & even do a little surfing.
How was your gig Saturday? I ate dim sum at Pearl in Rancho Bernardo. It was loaded with sodium. There's simply no way to do sodium-free dim sum.
David Allee, that name sounds familiar. Why, may I ask, had you turned "against the fans"? I have to admit, I have met some "fans" that I want nothing to do with in ANY lifetime...so I can understand!~Barbara

Why, may I ask, had you turned "against the fans"?I had nothing in common with them. They scared me. I found them literalminded & humorless, like politburocrats. Plus, Stevie started sucking, too.
The chiffonheads today seem groovier, suspended over a Barthesian chasm between jouissance & plaisir. Today's Stevie fans (with a few sorry exceptions) are keener, more flippant dadaists. I attribute the improvement to Darwinian natural selection.
Well, that clears that up, thank you, David :)

Awww that's nice of you to say. Glad you like it! Do you mean my avatar or the pic of her sleeping in my sig?
If you are referring to the sleeping angel picture in my sig (as I call it) I think someone posted it on another board (I don't remember which one) but it was some fashion site and someone started a thread about Stevie and all of these people started posting pics of Stevie I had never seen before. It is fabulous isn't it? Don't you just want to crawl under the covers and snuggle with her? :xoxo:

The sig. Really fabulous!
Yes, of course "sleeping angel" came to mind immediateley, and L. Cohen's line:
"Your head upon the pillow, like a sleepy golden storm"
I bet she is sleeping on the floor of a studio, waiting to sing.

That's a very good possibility. Never thought of that! It looks very 1970's to me so perhaps it was during the Tusk era and she was waiting for the mad scientist to formulate his masterpiece (they were in that studio forever!).

Yes, that is what I meant. But I posted this in the wrong thread, it should have gone in Chit Chat/homeland security thread.

I keep switching from work emails to this board, and thinking about time estimates and lame deadlines, so that work language is slipping in.
