CNN's closed captions are hilarious!!!! These are ones I've seen just from watching Newsnight with Aaron Brown today and yesterday.
"The old, the yuchk, and the frail."
"Now back to Ka Treepa."
"Osama Bin Laden is in Galveston."

Susan Lucci's on that one, isn't she?

I use CC all the time. I especially like watching music video captions.
One of the funniest mis-captions I've seen was for a Family Guy episode. In one of their trademark non-sequitirs, they spoofed a Mentos commercial where John Wilkes Booth missed shooting Lincoln, then had a mint. Lois said the commercials were getting more and more stupid, but Peter was hypnotized and stood up chanting "Must Kill Lincoln!!!" However, the caption read "Must Kill Clinton".

"Osama Bin Laden is in Galveston."
Did it REALLY say that?! That's the funniest thing I've read all night. Priceless.

Have you ever watched Malcolm In the Middle with the CC on? If not, you haven't lived. They always seem to fudge up everything Lois says. I caught a rerun of the red dress episode over the summer (the one where Hal sets her dress on fire, throws it in the toilet, and she thinks the boys did it) and she said to Malcolm "Have a soda, it's a brand name." The captions read "Have a soda, it's a bran muffin."

What the hell's the point of closed captioning if they aren't getting it right? How does it work, anyway? Do they gather together a whole bunch of hearing impaired people to watch all these TV shows and lip read them, and then write down what they THINK they've just "heard"? I am not being a smart-ass here. I very simply don't understand the process? Very often the cc is just phonetic spelling of what's been said on screen. Or a close approximation, correctly spelled, to what's been said.

I know, I couldn't believe it. It was Aaron Brown crossing over to some reporter standing in the storm in Galveston about an hour ago. I didn't even catch the name, but when 'Osama Bin Laden' came up on the screen that caught my eye.
I think these captioners are overworked! ;)

Well, the Bin Laden's invested how much in W's cr*ppy oil company (Hartco ? ) - so why shouldn't another Bin Laden find a familial safe haven in Texas now
