O.K. guys....I tried to post this under another thread so I wouldn't have to start a new one. They have predicted the eye of Rita to go over Port Arthur, Texas which is about 52 miles south of my town. We are out of the way of storm surge, but will be on the dirty side of the storm. We have prepared to the max. Don't judge us harshly for staying, we have legit reasons. Just please pray for us and our safety.....I really care about you guys, even if at times we don't agree. Just wanted you to know if something happens, 'cause it may be awhile before I get to speak with any of you again. It's expected to go down hill tonight until tomorrow mid morning. (Damn, you know I KNEW something would happen to keep me from recording Lindsay's Soundstage!!!....now I can't blame PBS) There has to be a sick mind in my head to be thinking of these things at times like this. Seriously, we have mattress lined up in the hall for protection from tornadic activity, strategically parked vehicles where the trees would have to take out the cars first, instead of the house. We have a generator, tons of water and food (we even found a case of MRE's that my son brought home from the military!) Twenty year shelf life....that kinda scary! Fire extinguishers, etc. I just needed to talk because I'm a little nervous. We've gone around the neighborhood to find out who is staying and where we will meet afterwards for moral support, extra food, water, shelter...whatever.
I really enjoy this little community (the Ledge) and have gotten much joy by being here....glad I found ya'll!

They are showing some of LA on Fox News (yeah,, I watch it!) and they are getting it worse than we are right now. NO is flooding all over again. This is really sad. I pray for your families safety and safe return home.

Fox reporters, esp. S. Smith, did a great job with Kartina
As for NOLA, it is sad, but that area (Ninth Ward) likely will not be rebuilt anyway. For the life of me, I will never inderstand why idiot politicians (all of them mind you  ) did not build those walls 10 feet higher

Who knows?....Galveston thought they were doing good with the 17ft seawall. People skate on the seawall all the time and the only thing I can think of is "that's a long fall down if you lose your balance....with nothing but boulders of granite to catch ya"

I'm from Longview... Rita should hit here late tonight early tomorrow... we're only getting the edge of it... estimated 12 inches of rain and 55mph winds... the wind is already howling .. it's eerie... there are evacuees parked on the side of the streets out here.. pitching tents...setting up camp.
i wish them all the luck in the world.
ciao

Everyone who's in the path of the storm, please stay safe!
Luckily, we're far enough inland that we shouldn't get more than some scattered showers. Those of you that aren't so lucky, be careful. I'll be thinking of you!

My son evacuated to Longview...that's as far as his gas tank would take him. They were fortunate enough to get a hotel room somewhere. He has a 8 mos old little girl, so he felt obligated to leave to protect her. I don't see how anyone can ride this out in tents...God Bless them all....and all the poor poor families that have tried to get out and are stuck on the side of the roads.

The old time Louisiana politicians were too busy lining their own pockets to worry about the people.

What's the excuse for Bush and his FEMA cronies? A scheduling conflict?

Well, it was not just them. In fact, they spent wads of cash building the current ones, which are fine for cat. 3. I just wonder what possessed the Army Core of Eng. to build only that high.
Note - I blame all politicians for this and am not starting a R v D argument

I hope everything goes well for you, and that you actually get to read this message sometime soon.
(But I'm praying for you & yours in the meantime.)
