She enjoys angel food cake with Cool Whip. That's what she told Martha Stewart anyway. :p As long as she still sounds terrific, I will buy her albums.

did anyone pay this album a listen?I'm afraid I'll have to pass, Tommer.
But I did just buy a batch of CDs at Tower:
Tallis - Spem in alium, Oxford Camerata (Naxos)
Ravel - Works for Solo Piano, Jean-Philippe Collard (EMI)
Carter - Symphony No. 1, Piano Concerto, Mark Wait & Nashville Symphony Orchestra (Naxos American Classics)
Martin Denny - Quiet Village & The Enchanted Sea (Scamp)
Mystic Moods Orchestra - One Stormy Night (HDS)
The Naxos American Classics series is outstanding, by the way, & I recommend all of you look into it.

You know, I love Barbara's voice, if only she wasnt such a MEGA-BITCH. :( I remember when I was in Vegas for Stevie's millenium show, Barbara was playing the MGM acroos the street, and someone told me she actually had it written into her contract that any employee of the hotel that looked her in the eye was to be fired. I dont have proof of this, but I heard it from several people that day. If it's true, that tops anything else I've heard.

I've been a huge fan since 94 and just got this album last night and it is pure BUTTAH! I love it. There are also remixes for Night of My Life coming out. I have them and they are awesome. My favorites are Above the Law, Hideaway, Stranger In A Strange Land and All the Children. A superb album. I've listened to it nonstop today at work.

I'd add firing one of the best living cinematographers cause he didn't want to use pathetically obvious filters to film her in The Mirror Has Two Faces.
Even if I liked Yentl (yes, also her surreal choice to play a twenty-something :p ) and I think when she wants she can be a very good actress besides an amazing (but sometimes too technical for my tastes) singer.

No one has lived until they've seen her Oscar-baiting, over-the-top turn in "Nuts." She was acting for those in the nosebleed section of the theater in that flick.

Fug, she stunk up the screen in that movie. Dreyfuss and Streisand, the gruesome twosome of overacting, in a movie together. Have mercy. I saw the theater version of it and it's much better in that from than on the screen; a filmed version gives the actors too much leeway to delve into hysterical hyperacting.

You mean her return to the world a la Tony Manero? Martin Ritt should have put some kind of Busby Berkeley number there with Richard Dreyfuss, the judge and the jury dancing at her feet while she was rising to the sky singing. :D

My favourite scene is when she's stoned in her jail and Richard Dreyfuss goes to speak to her, and for the first tme they don't shout for the whole time, that's beautifully acted IMO. By the way, I don't hate Nuts, Leslie Nielsen playing the bad guy is fun to watch.

I've never seen another movie dripping with so much self-love and ego in my life. Every frame is laboriously set up to make her, a frumpy Jewish woman under the impression that she's a walking goddess, appear as if she's the most glamorous of movie stars; as if the heavens parted just so that a ray of light could shoot down upon her being, illuminating her for the world to see. The gauze shots are enough to make one think that they downed a few bottles of heavy liquor that they never actually did, and the heavy-handed treatment of the subject matter coupled with her insatiable quest for mass adoration make one feel as if they're being conned, emotionally and aesthetically.
Never mind that Nick Nolte was anally raped as a child, no, she doesn't care about any of that; it is not essential to the story being told. The only thing that she wants to get across, and does she ever hammer into your head, is that she's a complicated character. Yes, Babs is complicated. She has enormous wealth, a fabulous career, and Elliot Gould's spawn. Of course, we already know what a complicated character she is, anyway. We're simply confused about which character while we're watching it: Barbra Streisand or the one she's playing in the movie?

As far as I know there were big pressures but I'm not sure she was directly responsible of them, or the studio that was anxious to create an international star. But Garson Kanin (director of Funny Girl theatre version and one of the best Hepburn's and Tracy's friends, till he wrote the infamous book about the two actors' love story that made Hepburn furious), played a strategical role to make Kate Hepburn accept the split Oscar, even if she didn't go, but that was mainly for the too recent Spencer Tracy's death. At least that's how I know the thing.

Barbra Streisand. So....what about her voice irks you? Is it that she can actually sing? I think people today (not just people under 25 or 30) have gotten so used to lousy, groaning, tuneless vocals that they wouldn't appreciate a Streisand, or a Doris Day, or a Judy Garland or even an Ann Wilson if their ass was bitten by them. She is on key, but it is scientific, sterile, and to my ears utterly emotionless and phony. But, people love her. Especially promoters. It is her, and Eagles, after all, who originated sky high ticket prices to concerts. I just pity the people who have to work for her. All of the people I have known who did, and there are many, say they would rather change careers or starve than be in the same zip code as her ever again. I prefer an inferior technical artist to one who treats people like garbage. Since I work in the business, I can't support performers who are monstrously cruel to my peers. Call me silly.
Nonetheless, people worship her. I don't get it. But my gay card was revoked while I was in high school.

Not the industry veterans I know, who have worked with everyone from Elizabeth Taylor and Bob Mackie to Hillary Duff and Babe The Pig. We don't tell each other stories on sets for sheer entertainment. It's to warn people who they should avoid - which jobs not to take. We don't solicit horror stories. And believe me, I don't get second hand trash. When people are awful, the word spreads like wildfire. I heard two stories tonight at a party that happened yesterday and the behavior of these people would curl your hair.
On the other hand, it is a joy to tell the stories about people who are fantastic to work with. That list is much longer. The stories don't come out of thin air. No one wants to go to work on a set for 14-18 hours a day with a human being who makes everyone's lives a living hell. Life is too short.

I'm sorry you feel that way. To me, you are missing out on a great talent and someone who is, IMO, very emotional and has songs that are really touching and meaningful for those times in everyone's life. Her whole idea is to create a character with a song. I will admit that her voice has changed a bit and may have lost some of her clear range, but listening to All the Children on the new album, she hits a high note and holds it and it gives me chills in the way I wish Stevie could still do some amazing vocals on Rhiannon.

But, good for you that you have other singers that invoke those chills. :wavey: I am listening to Trisha Yearwood right now and she does the same thing for me. And, she's an nice one too.

"The Way We Were"!! Classic. :)
Yes, it's a great movie, she's very good in it (and it has an intriguing easter egg: the practical lesson on how to seduce your acting partner, trying and trying again till you succeed). I also liked her in Hello Dolly, Yentl, What's Up Doc and Meet the Fockers :D . What I don't like of her is her total lack of spontaneity (yes, Lindsey converted me to his cause :p ), and her arrogance. Prince of Tides and Mirror has Two Faces make look Norma Desmond as a shy wannabe.

It's true. I won't buy a single thing from her. She will never get a dime out of me. Psycho-cow.

I don't find her arrogant at all. If anything, Babs is deeply insecure. If you ever get a chance to see her "Inside the Actor's Studio" you may sing another tune. She was pretty down to earth on there. All this throwing her weight around comes from how her Mom treated her. Her Mom really didn't encourage her all that much. She likes control. If she were a man, this conversation wouldn't be happening. And that's what I think is the saddest aspect of these "Barbra Streisand is a bitch" type threads. A strong woman who knows her craft is a bitch. A strong man is an "excellent business mind" or "a real leader." Maybe she just lacks the skills necessary to present herself more gently. I don't think she's a mean spirited person.

No, a man who acts like an asshole is a bitch. A woman who acts like an asshole is a bitch. It's very simple. If you act like one, people are going to call you one. Insecurity does not give one license to act like a terror to whomever they please. No one, regardless of their stature or clout, has that license and her reputation is well deserved.

while it may not give her a license to act in ways some of us are assuming she acts, it may give insight as to why. she was extremely poor and insecure as a child, her father died before she was 2 and her step-father slapped her and did permanent damage to one of her ears. she pulled herself up and rose to the top of her craft, imo, as a singer and actor. maybe she is a bitch or an asshole, maybe not, I don't know her and not sure anyone here does, but bitch or not, she has talent like none have or ever will - I'm sure none of us can say how we'd act if we grew up in that situation and became famous at 19. also, she's the biggest selling artist next to the likes of Elvis...she's doing something right and has lasted all this time.
suffice it to say, so what if she's a bitch. it doesn't make her any less an artist or person - she's done so much for various charities, stands up for what she believes in and opened doors for female artists..bitch? maybe, aren't we all...

Yup, have to agree. There is no excuse for acting like an idiot. Just because they have cash or are famous is no excuse. I know a lot of strong women who know their craft, who aren't bitches, as well as men. It is just pure arrongance, they think the rules do not apply to them. Most of these types I have come across would be nothing if you took away the money and fame. Very shallow. I pity them mostly. I have also met famous rich types that were very kind and nice. So, just because you are "at the top" doesn't mean you have to be a troll.

um, no it doesn't and yes, we all are at some time; being under the microscope 24/7 of course you come across as a mega-bitch. do you know for a fact that that's why the person was fired?
I've heard many not so nice stories about her from journalists, for example when she came in Italy, and was invited to a famous tv program, one of her bodyguards have thrown to the floor one of our major tv stars, the presenter of the program, only because he went to her dressing room to say hi, and she didn't even come out to see if he was okay. Then she let him know she was available to take one picture with him and he said no thanks.
Anyway, I think her detachment from reality is clearly visible in her art, at least in cinema. From a Star is born up to now her Mao Tse Tung- like cult of personality seriously damaged her acting career, and to have again a chance in Hollywood she had to accept Meet The Fockers, a project she despised. She must have liked the experience though since she's listed in the new sequel too.

She had the bellhops walk in backwards so they wouldn't look at her when they brought the suitcases in. Someone looked her way and she wanted them fired (The manager just moved him to another area- away from megabitch) This is beyond "having a bad day". I will give you everyone has their moments, but making people walk in backwards is just plain "bitchy", and had nothing to do with being under a microscope. And I classify this as "Less than a person" when you treat people that way. So I will again disagree with you, her behavior is inexcusable. 99.99999999% of all people if watched 24 hours a day would NEVER treat people like that. Didn't she do "Fockers" because her old pal Dustin Hoffman was in it, and not only that, Ben Stiller begged her to play his Mom? I must say, that was one dumb-ass movie. I don't think it is a scapegoat. Most of the stories come from inside the industry and are rarely, if ever reported in the media. They come from those who work with her. Unfortunately, the media reports the bad news because good news rarely sells. Did anyone see much about Stevie visiting the troops in the hospital? Not much. Babs is consistant with her stories, and is getting worse. I just refuse to support anyone who acts like that consistantly. I use to like Sting's music, but met him personally and won't support him either. He is another jerk. I can't listen to anyone's music when I know what a piece of work they are. There is no reason for acting that way, especially when the episodes continue and are not isolated. Is it possible to have bad decades?

I don't quite understand how a person can automatically say "so and so is a jerk" having met them one time. Yes, I will agree to co-workers telling stories that do not flatter their bosses. But meeting a celeb for just a minute or two and then summing up their personality by this one encounter seems rather unfair. We all have moods. We're all human. Sometimes celebs do use this status incorrectly. Like Russell Crowe throwing a phone at someone. That's just immature and very nearly "mental" behavior. Refusing an autograph or running from a fan or snubbing a fan is pretty acceptable to me though. Remember when Chris McVie was at Tower Records or someplace similar and she saw fans approaching and she wanted to run? I can't blame her.

I met him more than once, and seeing how he treated his people who work for him is pretty telling. And others have had similar stories. I agree that you can't judge people by one or two instances, but when they continue time and time again and form a pattern, well...there you go. I agree with you about judging people and I don't come to these conclusions quickly.

I don't need scapegoats, I call them as I see them. Barbra Streisand is a phenomenally gifted singer that I don't happen to care for and she also happens to be a major bitch. She's not alone in that arena, there are plenty of other bitches in her industry and many others who aren't in the entertainment industry. Assholes are everywhere in life, it's just that those who aren't big stars like Babs aren't afforded the celebrity label to help excuse their bad behavior.
Do I have respect for her accomplishments? You bet your ass I do. Do I admire her tenacity? Yup. I feel the same way about Martha Stewart. But that doesn't mean they aren't assholes.

Walking backwards means just that. You face the person "meant to be respected" and you walk backwards. It's a sign of obeisance. The person facing you can see your eye contact, if you're properly averting your gaze, etc.
