Just heard this on Channel 2 news. A national handwashing survey was conducted. :p
So! Do you wash your filthy little mitts after using the Powder Room?

Yeah, I knew that. Whatev. Soo...does that mean in their house, or out in public?
For Me:
Leaving, or out of, the house - yes (duh!)
Until I'm leaving the house - not so much (unless someone is in my house, then of course!)
Non Pee - always.
also, I would like to add, that I don't think it's as gross if the men just pee, then don't wash, as it is for girls. Other than pee, everyone should wash. :)

It's just a good habit to have.
Actual effect is probably more placebo-ish than anything, but because I'm trained to do it, I never leave the bathroom without having washed my hands, and those who don't really gross me out. :sorry: (..Especially when they go straight on to preparing my dinner  )

Ewww. Have to disagree. We use tissues to "dry off". I don't know about you, but my hand doesn't come in direct contact with my heynonnynonny. Men "shake it" and they have to hold it to do that. Who knows where that thing WAS prior to the pee!? Oook! LOL!!! :wavey:

Meh. I guess that's true, but it seems all "dry" to me. Whereas, I wipe twice and three times. (TMI)
But, I shouldn't really be in this convo, I'm the least grossed out, clean ledgie, ever.
*seriously, make a poll, and ask people "who seems like the least grossed out ledgie?"
Betcha I would win.*
Though, I hate snot and spit, really bad....in an every day context...
I'm not dirty, I just think there are some especially OCD kids on here....  (Hi, Diss! :wavey: :xoxo: )
I can't watch people drink milk, either...and has anyone else ever seen "milk strings"? In someone's mouth? So.Gross.
Sex things rarely, if ever, bother me, though. I'm more worried if you came from Vietnam and recently ate a chicken infected with...SRI - 5, or whatev. (Just watched scary program on PBS last night - it's like - super Influenza  Like, you're dead in five days, your whole lungs are taken over)

OK, I'll be honest here: out in public or at work ABSOLUTELY. EVERY TIME.
at home: no way, its just me after all.....well, me and a 5yr old boy....
but the only thing Im picky about is that he raises the seat and lowers it.
nothing nastier than sitting on someone elses pee...
but I do it at anyone elses house and I do it out in public everywhere.
AND: I wash my hands before touching food which I think is the biggie.
plus I keep my kitchen clean, I clean with bleach regularly....all thru the house
having said that, I know of one gal at work who DOESNT wash and I find I am disgusted.....

Unless it's been on or in The Road Less Travelled. Then not only is the thing not washed recently, you've got that lingering afterglow of shmutz on it. Also WAY TMI!!!!

How about a poll on how many men dribble on the floor?! URP!!
We were standing in the unisex Only-bathroom-open-at-the-time Pee-line before the Santana concert, when it came to be my turn (after 3 men in a row) I walked in to find not only the toliet seat up, but I was about to go wading in a pool of pee. So I grabbed a mound of toliet seat covers, threw them on the floor on top of the pool of pee, then grabbed an extra two or three so I could push the toliet seat down. It went crashing down on the pot with a loud KER-BANG! My friends told me afterwards they heard it "Loud and Clear" and knew they were in for trouble going in. It was NAST-EYE!! The smell was enough to gag 5,000 maggots.
Anyone in the middle of dinner? hehe

That is such a low estimate. Double it.
In public restrooms with volume - a concert hall, amusement park, etc. only about 25% WASH their hands. Take it from Sparky. I have seen it.

There's a reason why I rarely shake hands (and rush to a bottle of Purell when I do). ;)
I pity the fools who eat the pretzels and nuts at bars, too. If they only knew what they were ingesting. Poor schlubs. The real nasty little porkers are the ones who use public restrooms and don't wash their hands. I've been at movie theaters and, when I'm forced to use the john, there's always some random cootie-carrying schmuck who shakes his dick around like it's goddamned sparkler on the 4th of July and then waltzes out while rubbing his hands on his Levis that are two sizes too small for his overweight ass. Makes me think twice about buying popcorn, I could very well be eating some employees dried piss spores.

Reminds me of the PortOSan at the SYW concert I went to!! :p My friend and I HAD to go. And there was no TP and obviously no hand washing facilities. So when we sat down at the concert I offered a piece of gum. And of course we shoved it in, and chomped it. Then we went........   .....WE DIDN'T WASH OUR HANDS AFTER THE UH....BATHROOM!!!" LOL!! Happy to report all was well. Shudder at the thought...
I wash my hands as soon as I get home, everyday - and every single solitary time I use the washroom (with soap - and if there isn't soap in a public washroom - God forbid!! I'm totally grossed out). I'm totally with takenbythesky - middle of the night, on my way into the shower, every single time.
Oh. But I'm a girl. Was this meant only for the boys?

No...but I understand that people will have it. I hate when people make me laugh, then I snot.
Just for reference - all you manic germophobes....I *NEVER* get sick. And if I do, It's only cause I smoke. :D Though, not everyone will have an immune system like mine. And you can all laugh when I get Cancer. You can be like "oh, she never got a cold or the flu, but that Cancer is a biatch!!! :xoxo: "
It's okay, I'll laugh with you. :D
I ALWAYS wash my hands after using the little room.
Washing my hands is almost an obsession for me.. for example, if I just petted my cats and then want to eat something, I have to wash my hands first. Don't want cat-germs on my food. (All the same I got used to finding cat hairs in my food though and have little problem with that!)
Public restrooms though, I try not to touch anything, including the taps. Just think, the hands which touched those taps, where have they been before? Eww. But having to wash my hands wins from that thought, most of the time.
Yes, OCD. Guilty.

The only time I ever have been was when I was on the Amazon River and had to meet the Chriefs of the primitive villages we serviced. Touching the tap is gross. Turn the water off with a dry paper towel. Get it ready before you wash. That tap is dirtier than anything else, eww eww eww.
I always wash my hands. Always. But as someone above said, if there is no soap I get grossed out. Only THEN will I not wash because touching that tap is worse and without soap that stuff will not come off! Eww eww eww.

If you want to know you're washing your hands long enough, wet them, soap 'em up, and then sing one chorus of "Happy Birthday." To yourself...not aloud. :p That supposedly is a proper amount of scrubbing time to kill off any nasties. There may be a couple people here who will have to sing a few choruses.

Ugh!! Me, too!!! I just don't get it. Why would anyone want to go around with their own bodily fluids (ew - I've always hated that expression) on their hands?? And what's more - we actually have signs about how to properly wash hands posted in the washrooms at my workplace. Clearly, these people don't read the literature provided. :distress:
The grossest thing: I work with women (and guys, I'm betting) who don't wash their hands after the washroom (I've seen them leave). And we all share keyboards, phones, etc. Brutal.

Who knows where that thing WAS prior to the pee!? Oook! LOL!!! :wavey:Yeah, bacteria from the anus have a very short trip to the John Hancock.
I'm a hand-washer -- I wouldn't exactly say "compulsive," but I wash my hands after I wash the dishes! I wash my hands after using someone else's phone! I wash my hands after shopping for CDs or DVDs at Best Buy!
You get the picture.
I also carry around a little vial of antibacterial goo. When I sit down to eat at any restaurant, I have either just washed my hands in the restroom there or used some antibacterial goo.
Cold germs are everywhere: door handles & knobs, chairs, rental DVD cases, people's phones, etc.
I guess I'm a little anal-retentive too when it comes to hand washing.
After using the bathroom (anytime, anywhere) goes without saying. But I also do it all day long just because. I can be watching a movie at home and I'll pause it just to go wash my hands, when I haven't even left the couch in the past hour. I just can't stand them to feel at all sweaty/sticky/dirty. Ever. :)

Okay, see, this is what I don't understand. You go to the restroom, right? but then everyone has to:
A) touch the door to go into the stall, then,
B) touch the handle to flush, then:
C) touch the door to get out, then:
D) touch the faucet to turn it on, then finally their hands get washed. So, already, everyone has touched 3 surfaces that everyone else has touched before they washed their hands. (for girls). Shouldn't everyone really be washing their hands before they touch the door to go in, and then using a protective glove when they flush and then open the door and then turn on the faucet?
Honestly, it's amazing the human race as survived this long, what with all these killer germs floating around... *don't eat poultry in vietnam*.

Well, I try my best NOT to use the rest room. But if I do have to go in one I will NOT use my hands. I use my foot or elbow. :) My foot to push open the door, the stall, and flush the toliet. My elbow to push the lever for the paper towel. No matter what I will use PURELL after leaving the bathroom. A woman's bathroom is disgusting. I don't even want to get into the woman that use the sanitary boxes on the side of the stall. YUCK. No thanks.

So! Do you wash your filthy little mitts after using the Powder Room?
I am always amazed at the amount of people I see NOT wash there hands (in public restrooms).
I wash every time I am in a 'proper bathroom'. I use that phrase, b/c as someone who spends a LOT of time in a barn, or in woods on a horse, there are plenty of times when you just have to go, and there is no plumbing in sight! What can you do?
BTW, I love the ast array of amusing topics everyone here seems to come up with!

The thing that I don't understand is that these porkies aren't embarrassed about not washing their hands. I mean, I would be horrified if I knew that I just expelled waste from my person and didn't wash my hands in front of someone in the john and then just waltzed off. Fug, man.

Study says Braves fans not fond of washing hands
Posted: Thursday September 22, 2005 2:06PM; Updated: Thursday September 22, 2005 2:07PM
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Men are dirtier than women. So scientists confirmed by spying in public restrooms, watching as one-quarter of men left without washing their hands.
The worst offenders were at an Atlanta Braves game.
In contrast, 90 percent of the women did wash up.
Wednesday's results mark the American Society of Microbiology's latest look at how many people take what is considered the single easiest step to staying healthy: spending 20 seconds rubbing with soap under the faucet.
It also explains why these infection experts tend to use paper towels to open bathroom doors. There is no telling what germs the person before you left on the knob.
"It's a gamble," said microbiologist Judy Daly of Primary Children's Medical Center in Salt Lake City, the society's secretary.
Back in 1996, the society first studied how often people follow mom's advice to always wash up after using the toilet. Researchers lingered in public restrooms, putting on makeup or combing their hair, while surreptitiously counting. They concluded about one-third of people did not wash.
The group sponsored an education campaign about how hand-washing can stop the spread of flu, diarrhea and other infectious diseases. Every few years, researchers repeat the spying.
This time, 83 percent of people washed, reported Harris Interactive, a research company that last month monitored more than 6,300 public restroom users for the society.
That is a little better overall. But take a closer look:
-The worst hygiene was at Atlanta's Turner Field baseball stadium, where 37 percent of men left the bathroom without washing, and 16 percent of the women did.
-New York's Penn Station had the biggest gender disparity, where 64 percent of men washed their hands compared with 92 percent of women. Grand Central Station was almost as bad.
-The best hygiene was at San Francisco's Ferry Terminal Farmers Market and Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry and Shedd Aquarium, where only about 12 percent of people left without washing.
People exaggerate about hygiene. A Harris telephone survey of 1,000 more adults found 91 percent insisted they wash in public restrooms. Additionally, 77 percent claimed to always wash before handling or eating food, and 32 percent after coughing or sneezing.
It is hard to double-check the latter claims. But the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says poor hand-washing contributes to almost half of all foodborne disease outbreaks.
With influenza season approaching, microbiologists warn that it is easy to catch a cold or the flu by shaking hands with someone who just used that hand to cover a sneeze. The viruses can stay alive for two hours on hands, and for 20 minutes on hard, dry surfaces those germy hands touch.
So sneeze into your elbow instead and wash frequently. There is no need for special anti-bacterial cleansers, Daly said, although alcohol-based hand gels can substitute when soap's not available.

I just thought of something else while using the restroom at school. So...you're done going to the bathroom...but then you have to pull up and zip your pants...and pull up your underwear (most girls)...so, right there, those germs are on your pants...
And - that heavy use of antibacterial things breeding super bacteria is very true.

Yeah, but that's your germs on your own clothes.
BTW - the thing Sparky mentioned about antibacterial soaps are true, but hand sanitizer is not the same. Purell etc.) has been found to be as (if not more) effective at cleaning hands as soap & H2O. It was a study done in a hospital, I'll see if I can find the article...
