.."how will we feel in 20 years from now?"

.. a long overdue survivor... and since it's just about 20 years after "Rock A Little" was released, it'll be interesting to see how these songs rank in 2005..

Probably the most polarizing Stevie Nicks CD ever..

and here it is:

I Can't Wait
Rock A Little (Go Ahead Lily)
Sister Honey
I Sing For The Things
Imperial Hotel
Some Become Strangers
Talk To Me
The Nightmare
If I Were You
No Spoken Word
Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You

The cutoff time for Round 1 will be on Thursday at 9PM..

let the voting begin now... :wavey:

FYI people The Nightmare is a top 10 Stevie song for me so this is a very painful round of survivor. There really needs to be a smiley on here for tears (and not just a sad face because that won't do me justice).

PenguinHead

I don't understand the hatred of "Imperial Hotel." That song was among the few on that album that managed to evade the cheesy and dated 1980's production. And it was one of the few songs on the album that indeed did rock a little. And it has a very Tom Petty and Heartbreakers feel to it.

"The Nightmare" is the obvious choice. Yet, perversely, can it be so bad that it is actually is good? By this I mean, in the cannon of Stevie's work, it certainly stands out as her most experimental off-the-wall bit of gibberish. No one else but Stevie could have churned this one out. It holds the same morbid curiosity as a car crash! For this reason alone, I won't vote it off just yet.(By the way, the comment about Chris Nicks' credit was very astute and funny!)

I'd vote off "If I Were You." A pleasant song, but generally the music and lyrics are so generic. Plus, Stevie didn't write the majority of it. The bridge, which she did write was it's only saving grace.

Well I believe that love is a living thing
Born into our destinies from a single moment of inspiration
As it grows it changes our lives forever

That's why RAL is so special. It's erratic, debauched, self indulgent, yet brilliant. It's the end of an era. It's self parody, but at the same time the self without the parody. And the self with the parody. I think that after RAL, she always took the road of more self parody, lyrics wise.
I think RAL is VERY sincere. OSOTM touches that, but it is more self conscious (lyrically), IMO.
There is a "free flow" that RAL captures that is inimitable.
Especially with the likes of "Rock a Little". When I first heard the album, I didn't like this song. I thought - "too slow, too boring, not dynamic."

But now, it has an unequaled moodiness, and a strange rhythm
...and I give credit to the spare bass part for that, mostly. It's pretty subtle. But I also have to give credit to Stevie's sense of rhythm.
And even though the lyrics are pretty lame -
Musically, vocally, and Stevilly (lame lyrics), it stands up. From the perspective of someone who doesn't judge Stevie's lyrics especially stringently, of course, but who still knows when Stevie is pretty lame.
I love it. I LOVE it.
Seriously, peops, I challenge you to find a song as strange, evocotive, personal, and beautiful as RAL.
*hates, but loves: "Rock and Roll ballerina, where else will she go??" So bad, yet so true. :)

Great statement! Much enjoyed and agreed with. Just like me (rock a little)you demonstrate -- that in genuine devotion -- you can be both highly critical of an artist yet still remain a big fan. It's not so black and white, not the "you're either with us or against us" mentality.

Some well-meaning fans seem over-protective and easily offended by critical discourse. I, on the other hand believe that if there's anyone that has the credibility to criticize, it is the obsessed fan!

Nice. didn't think anyone would know what i was talking about (funny, little dancer) :p

yeah...I can be overprotective of miss thang, but I see tons of her flaws. And am, of course, an obsessed fan as well.
Honestly, to me, it's hard to talk about Thang without being critical.
Which never means I think she is any less brilliant than she is. And I think she's very brilliant. Very. She is the voice. She is my....but she can be so monumentally crappy, as well. Monumentally...
Honestly, IMO, most of her songs contain brilliance and mediocrity in the same song... (with some exceptions). So...
That's neat! That quality is so pronounced in her, and so unusual. You could find anything within most of her songs. You get crappy with fantastic all at once. You may love the music, and hate the lyrics. You might like the production, but hate the vocal. You might love the vocal and the production, but know the lyrics are lame. You never know...it's always a suprise, with Stevie! (personally, I usually love the vocal, it is Stevie, after all. I believe she has a MASSIVE vocal gift, not to be seen again, or even close to be seen. )

okay, sorry... :p

Gotta go with the Nightmare. Though in its defense it is kinda interesting how they used the 80s drum machine sound which is such a glaring juxtaposition to the dark lyrics.

This song is begging for a Lyndsay production. Something like on GDW would have worked better here.
