 Ok, I'm so sick and tired of these dips*its whining about whether or not they get cable tv, or whatever other "Perk" they feel theyre entitled to in jail. I'm all for rehabilitation, but this aint playtime people. I've been told I'm heartless by some of my friends, but I look at it this way/ You did something wrong to land where you are, the last thing you should thing you deserve is a perk of any kind. Maybe I dont get it? But I really saw the light back in the 90's when I saw Richard Allen Davis, the creep that killed Polly Klaas sit there in court and taunt the girls father. I though to myself, this *&%^%^* is sitting in jail watching tv at my expense?!?!?! OH HELLLLLL NO!!! Now I realize that death row is different from other reasons why someone might land behind bars, but the basic reason everyone lands in prison is because they've done something pretty bad. I'd be curious to see what others think about this.

Or they've made a relatively minor mistake and are getting the book thrown at them when in comparison someone who has done a crime that is so much vaster in comparison gets a fine and some community service hours.

Not all prisons are like that. Cable TV. Haaaa. And anyhow, I believe that the true effect on a person of going to prison has nothing to do with what goes on inside of those walls. It's the family and friends those people have to leave behind that are damaged. It's coming OUT of prison, with the world having moved on without you. Never ABLE to actually rehabilitate because no one will hire you and you're treated as a leper. Somebody can be sentenced to jail for a year and have their whole lives ruined.

Good point. I know if I was a business owner, I wouldnt autamatically dismiss someone as a job candidate just because theyd spent some time in the cooler, I'd look at each case individually.

Exactly.

I remember last year when people were so outraged over prisoners in jail being given flu shots when there was supposedly such a lack of supply. I hate the attitude that those in jail are somehow less than human. Just because they committed a crime, or crimes, and made mistakes, they don't deserve to be treated like animals. Then there are those who are offended that jails offer degree programs for the inmates. I'll never know why people are so opposed to it, but that's just me. One would think that people would embrace the idea of doing something with your life after making mistakes and think that it's something worth promoting.

I wasnt trying to give the impression that I think theyre less than human, I just dont like it when I hear stories about how good people sometimes have it behind bars. I believe these people are there for a reason. But the degree program doesnt bother me as much for certain offenders if they truly want to be a better person when they get out.

My 21-year old brother has been sitting in a county jail for a year and two months. He's never planned on going to trial, yet he still only PLED three weeks ago and will be sentenced in two weeks. Unless a miracle happens, he will be sentenced to five years in prison for trying to steal $100 from a convenience store register because he was hopped up and needed a fix. His cell is smack in the middle between a sex offender who molested at LEAST thirty children while he worked as an elementary school custodian on one side and a gentleman who brutally raped and murdered a 17-year old lifeguard at a pool a couple of years ago. Yeah. It's a walk in the park there. Please.

Meanwhile, a businessman in my hometown who stole tens of millions of dollars from his company, causing the company to go into bankruptcy and layoffs of hundreds was given six months in minimum security prison, and a fine of $20,000. Wow. My baby brother goes to jail for five years for a stupid MISTAKE, and isn't helped along the way by being put into some kind of rehab or boot camp, where he BELONGS? and this asshole gets what doesn't even COUNT as a wrist slap?

Prisons suck, but the legal system that puts people IN them is where the real bull**** lies.

People are put in prison because they made a consious choice to commit a crime!

The should NOT be afforded certain privleges that others get - ie: Cable tv.

I have no problem with degree programs because the key to getting rid of poverty and ultimately crime - IS education. That's for some crimes though...

A pedophile will still be a pedophile with or without a degree.

I think that prisoners SHOULD have the absolute bare minimum in prison.

They're not sub-human - but they also chose not to live within the means of society - so they are being punished.

OH yeah - it's undeniable that there is a HUGE problem with the prison system.

People with petty drug crimes - ie- a pocketful of Marijuana shouldn't be in prison with hard core sex offenders...

The justice system's priorities are severely out of whack.

I think prison/rehabilitation should only be for petty offenses (theft, etc) . I think if someone is guilty of rape (pedophiles or otherwise) or murder (beyond a shadow of a doubt, DNA evidence, caught red handed, confession, etc) they should get a bullet between the eyes. Get rid of the scum in our society. The crime rate is almost ZERO in countries with ZERO tolerence. Humane? No. But neither are their crimes.

It costs so much to house and feed these diabolical people for decades on end.

A bullet costs $1.00 at most.

Rape is a horrible crime. Child molesters can not be rehabed. Rapes can be brutal and can scar a person forever. Ask any child or person who has been brutally raped. It is a disgusting and painful crime to live through. Once a rapist always a rapist. Although usually the rapes get more and more brutal until it leads to one becoming a murdering rapist.

With or without the murder, it deserves death. Period.

Well, if you feel so strongly about it, I think you should be the executioner. Have you ever inflicted such judgement on people? Have you ever seen someone killed for a crime? I have and let me tell you it is much easier to sit in judgment than it is to carry out the execution by either electrocution or a firing squad. But, you said "a bullet," which implies one person with a gun shooting another. Could you do that day in and day out. I am unsure if I could.

In any event, here is the history of the DP if you are interested:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capital_punishment

Also and for what it is worth, the US Const. seemingly prohibits the DP for anything but reason and capital crimes.

Oregon prisoners getting cable
Cells being wired for TVs inmates buy themselves

Tuesday, October 7, 2003

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

PORTLAND -- In a couple of months, David Lahnala will be able to kick back on his bunk at the Oregon State Correctional Institution and surf more than a dozen channels on his own flat-panel television.

"I'll probably watch a lot of wildlife and educational stuff," said Lahnala, who is serving a life sentence for a double murder. He explained that the prison has shown mostly "Hollywood junk" during his first 15 years inside.

After decades of watching television in large groups on cellblock floors and in activity rooms, state prisoners are increasingly being offered another option: cable in cells.

Critics call the move criminal-coddling. Oregon Department of Corrections officials say prisons are crowded and losing recreation and education programs, so that guards are constantly breaking up bloody fistfights during group TV hours.

At Oregon State Correctional Institution, where an inmate was stabbed in the neck with a pencil for talking during TV time earlier this year, longtime Superintendent Jim Bartlett said he expects in-cell television to be "a good baby sitter."

As soon as that prison's canteen starts selling televisions in January, Lahnala and 319 other long-term inmates will get the freedom to flip from ESPN to the Discovery Channel in their cells.

Across the state, Eastern Oregon Correctional Institution is readying a "privileged housing" unit, with cells wired for cable.

Others are considering similar moves. And some prisons already have done it. Oregon State Penitentiary has offered an in-cell cable package to inmates since 1987.

Today, the maximum-security penitentiary in Salem is home to 1,900 of Oregon's most dangerous felons and their 1,124 personal televisions. They get 25 channels. On Death Row, if a resident can't afford to buy a television, the state will loan him one.

Corrections officials are quick to point out that taxpayers pay only for the electricity.

Prisoners buy televisions, which have 7-inch screens, with money they make from working behind bars. The cable is funded by collective inmate trust accounts.

But if state prisoners are going to get television, Steve Doell, president of Crime Victims United, thinks the activity should stay in the group setting.

"A lot of the problems these guys have is socialization -- getting along with others," Doell said. "So, how do you socialize them when they're sitting in their cell by themselves?"

Note - I am not bothered by them having cable television.

Of course not. That is why we have laws in place. I mean there was a thread awhile back about that Bobitt (sp.?) woman cutting her husband's penis off because he allegedly raped her over and over again. Well, I get that if that if he did rape her over and over again, he was a bad person. But, for her to exact her own punishment while he was sleeping or whatever is a crime as well. Well, I get that if that if he did rape her over and over again, he was a bad person. But, for her to exact her own punishment while he was sleeping or whatever is a crime as well. I am all about the law.

When I served on a jury it was so hard to get people to talk about the facts of the case at first. Everyone had already formed an opinion during the trial! I was amazed by how little thought some were willing to put into the verdict. In the end though I think the system worked because a discussion did get going and folks were able to discuss their opinions without flipping out.

Pfft. She told the police she sliced off his pecker because he was selfish and wouldn't give her an orgasm.

I know - but the "men are always evil no matter what crowd" will never see it that way. So be it.

Forming an opinion during the trial is okay, but those opinions should be discussed per the judge's intructions.

I have never served on a jury. I imagine it would be very much like Julia Sugarbaker's jury duty

This case is one I do not know the details of. Did she really say that to police? And dude, why are you stirring this cauldron?

But they were convinced they were right and there was no discussion necessary. It was so weird, some people just don't listen. Some of us had to guide others into looking at the evidence and the credibility of the witness.

This case is one I do not know the details of. Did she really say that to police? And dude, why are you stirring this cauldron?

John Wayne Bobbitt (born March 23, 1967) and Lorena Bobbitt (née Lorena Gallo, born in 1968 or 1969 in Bucay, Ecuador) were an American couple, best known for a 1993 incident in which Lorena severed a portion of John's penis with a kitchen knife.

On the night of June 23, 1993, Bobbitt cut off her husband's sex organ with a kitchen knife as he lay sleeping in their Manassas, Virginia, home. She then drove off with the severed appendage and flung it out her car window. Police performed a diligent search and located it, and it was then surgically reattached.

In statements to police, she explained that she had cut off the penis because her husband was "selfish" and "wouldn't give her an orgasm". She was charged with "malicious wounding", but was found not guilty in 1997 on the grounds that she had experienced an irresistible impulse to wound her husband, who had also physically abused her. Therefore she was not liable for her actions. She was, however, ordered to spend 45 days in a mental hospital.

John also faced charges stemming from accusations of assault against Lorena. He was acquitted of a charge of marital sexual assault in September 1993.

Lorena and John were divorced in 1995. Lorena resumed the use of her maiden name, Gallo. In 1998, she was charged with assault for punching her mother, Elvia Gallo, as she watched television.

After his reattachment surgery, Bobbitt briefly became a porn star, appearing in the movies Frankenpenis and John Wayne Bobbitt … Uncut, in part to finance the operation which reattached his member. In "Frankenpenis," Bobbit played a character who was made with spare parts, much like "Frankenstein", whose penis inexplicably comes off during a rousing session of intercourse. Bobbit then moans, "oh no, not again."

In 1997, John Bobbitt moved to Nevada, where he has worked in a brothel and as a bartender, a tow truck operator, and a minister in a Las Vegas church. After divorcing Lorena, he married Dottie Brewer (3 February 2001 – 26 February 2001) and Joanna Ferrell (since 23 March 2002).

An ironic facet of the incident in which his penis was severed is that the English verb "to bob" means "to cut short", and hence the family name "Bobbitt" sounds like "bob it", i.e. "cut it short".

The case created a popular sensation at the time, and was a frequent subject of jokes and joking references. It even seemed possible for a while that the Bobbitt name might enter the language. For example, Boston Globe architecture critics wrote in 1994 that "An architectural Bobbitt case, Memorial Hall at Harvard University has lacked [the top part of] its tower since September 1956." However, public memory of the case has receded.

I went with the meatloaf...actually they call it chopped steak with gravy, I call it meat loaf  ..... nice salad, rolls and banana bread slices, steamed green beans, mashed taters and for dessert was a brownie with vanilla ice cream with a raspberry drizzle.

God -- you were right -- now I need a nap!

I know - I hate that. Also, I have seen juries convict based on extra evidence stuff and it just pisses me off to no end.

I don't even know what they're talking about, I just had to jump in when I saw Bobbitt being defended. She's crazier than Coultergeist on a cocktail of pop rocks and acid.

I wonder what else she said to them. I wouldn't defend her. If she were severely abused I can see how that would cloud her judgement but what she did was wrong. However, I also wouldn't defend Mr Bobbit because I think he's a pig.

Interestingly and though he certainly was porcine, Mr. Bobbit was aquitted of a charge of of a charge of marital sexual assault in September 1993.

I noticed that. I don't know the details of that either. Regular rape is very hard to prove, I would imagine marital rape would be nearly impossible. However, as I said, I don't know the details.

Here is a site

Also, many states used to spefically state a husband could not rape his wife, though I am unsure if that is still the case. What happens in those cases though, from what I have seen, the husband and wife reconcile and the wife drops the charges.

Well, according to that report the jury believed she was raped and severely abused. She was raped before she cut off his unit. He's a bad guy. But I don't defend her action I just can understand how someone might snap under the circumstances. Given all of the trouble he got in after divorcing his wife he makes it very clear what kind of character he has (lacks).

Oh - I have no defense for him. I also have no comment on her allegation that she was raped. My problem is she stated her motive was not self defense, but that he was selfish and would not give her an orgasm apparently during the rape, which makes no sense. I mean why would she want him to be selfless during that rape or any other prior rape. The facts as spoken by here are fishy to me.

If we wanted to open a can of worms we could talk about the for profit prison system.

There is plenty to talk about there.
