Besides being a great guitarist, I think he also works as a producer for other artists and may be the one credited for the Heartbreakers sound.

He's the guitarist in Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers.
Honestly a quick look on google would have revealed this.

Mike Campbell is the ****. I've always enjoyed his style. He's definitely one of the players that influenced me when I was learning guitar.

while we're on the topic..
is he the same Mike Campbell that produced most of the Blondie LP's? (Parallel Lines, Eat to the Beat, Autoamerican, The Hunter)
...i'm gonna feel stupid if his name wasn't Mike Campbell, hahaa

What songs did he produce for Stevie?
He helped produce "Too Far From Texas" with Stevie and Sheryl Crow
Played guitar on "It's Only Love"
Helped write "Greta," "Blue Denim," "Kick It," Played guitar or something
a LOT on the "Street Angel" album also, helped Tom Petty write
"Stop Draggin,'" Helped Stevie write "Imperial Hotel," "Ghosts,"
"Whole Lotta Trouble," "Fire Burning," and "Desert Angel."
Not sure what else he might have produced.
So there ya GO! :D

It was Mike Chapman who produced the Blondie records you mentioned :)
I was just going to post that. :)

Oh, ditto that! Great guitarist. I've learned to play so many Petty&Heartbreaker riffs etc when I started playing.

Yeesh... that's a track record I would not be proud of. I think you have just rattled off five of Stevie's all-time most hated tracks. Mike Campbell was poisonous for Stevie and I seriously hope that she has the good sense not to work with him again.

I always thought that their relationship when it came to songwriting was that he would send her instrumental tracks and she would take out her book of lyrics and try to sing them to the tracks. Thus, I don't know if you could call him poisonous... she calls him when she's musically bankrupt and he sends her stuff. She chooses whether to use it or not. That's how I understood it, anyway. Could be way off.
And he was fairly beneficial to Blondie

I dunno, there's nothing much in this thread apart from people saying he's awesome and confusing him with Mike Chapman. A bit dull if you ask me. :)
When I saw that earlier, I was literally racking my brain like a dolt, trying to think of a Blondie tune Mike Campbell played on. I obviously came up with zilch.

I'd be game, especially since Chris posted on his blog that the next record is going to be a much rawer rock album. Campbell could fit in quite nicely.

Maybe we should try and suggest it to Chris Stein! That would be so cool to hear him on a Blondie album.
I take back what I said about this thread being dull :)
I'll totally send off an email to him suggesting it. Are you going to any of the shows on their UK tour later this year? Try emailing Chris with setlist suggestions, enough people did the last time around and they added stuff like "Angels On the Balcony" and "Dog Star Girl." I would totally squeal if they brought back something like "Contact In Red Square." There's a boot on DimeADozen right now from '77 with songs like "Poet's Problem," "Heatwave," "Moonlight Drive," "Little GTO," "Goldfinger," and a bunch of other great ones if you're interested.

 they played angels on the balcony???!!
I would kill. Are there boots anywhere?
I would lobby for that, War Child, and.... hmm... maybe the Beast! Actually no, make that Danceway. And I mean that in all seriousness. For as horrible as people made it out to be, I loved the Hunter.
And I only thought it was Mike Campbell because someone replied to my q earlier and said Yeah, he produced Blondie stuff! :sorry:

I have some, I'll try to rip that song tomorrow. You have to have a lot of tenacity and determination to find Blondie bootlegs, which is weird because there are hundreds out there. It's taken me ages to build my collection.

They did War Child on the last tour. Deb added new lyrics to the bridge:
You weren't discovered by the Khmer Rouge
We hear about the "troubles" on the nightly news
PLO sweethearts make it after curfew
Exploding with terror, you never win or lose
The curse of religion, no one wants to choose
Political favors with a corporate view
Your fathers and brothers have the West Bank Blues
The Hunter is one of my favorites, I'll never understand why it was so derided. Maybe because it was such an extreme departure for them, who knows. Orchid Club is one of the sexiest songs (that wailing in the middle of it is truly something else) and the title track is heavenly. English Boys has one killer vocal, possibly the highest she's ever sung. Love that album and I'd die to hear The Beast in concert. They've done Rapture, No Exit, and Shakedown, so you never know.

Wowww. War Child is definitely one of my favorites. How did they duplicate the rubber-band sounding backing track? It must have been awesome.
I love the Hunter but I understand that lots of people don't, in the same way that I'll love a Stevie song 99% of the world will scrunch their noses at. I occupy a broad listening space, or something like that. Haha I was trying to paraphrase Mike CHAPMAN's The Hunter reissue liner notes and failed miserably. I always thought he captured that album very well, though.
I'd love to see pretty much any song from that album, besides Dragonfly  Or Autoamerican for that matter, although it would more for novelty's sake than anything else. Walk Like Me, though, would be killer. I still think that song is just waiting to be covered by the right young band. Especially with the current political climate!
I could go on for days, haha, so I'll just stop here.

They made it more of a rock song with lots of guitar, but also amped up the keyboards. I'll try to rip that one, too.

I loooooooooove Dragonfly. I think the melody of the verses is irresistible, and the way she says "Grand PRICKS" always makes me chuckle. It's understandable that you don't like it, though, it's an acquired taste, especially at six minutes. They certainly had major balls to release it with Island of Lost Souls as a single, I'll give them that. Didn't Chapman say in the liner notes that Debbie wrote it from scratch right there in the studio, like Rapture? I remember reading somewhere that it's one of Debbie and Chris' favorite albums.
Walk Like Me would be great, but I want to hear Go Through It live before I die. They could always begin a show with Europa, too.

I don't dislike Dragonfly, and I like it a lot more than the first time I heard it. Just not a favorite. ....and Island of Lost Souls as a single never struck me as ballsy. On the contrary, I thought it was a pretty cheap attempt to rehash some of the success of Tide is high. In fact, I thought the writing of the song itself was an attempt to rehash Tide is High. And Clem Frank and Nigel have all gone on record saying the same thing.
And I completely forgot about Live it Up from the Autoamerican LP. that's another all-time fave, up there with Angel and War Child.

No, no, I meant releasing Dragonfly as the b-side to the Island of Lost Souls single was ballsy. I agree that it was a rehash of The Tide Is High, but personally, The Tide Is High is my least favorite Blondie song. Fun in concert because they really funk it up and she vamps it up, but I can't stand the studio version. I much prefer Island of Lost Souls; better lyrics, great vocal, and I love the music.

I'd like them to bring back more of the really ancient songs like In the Sun, Shark In Jets Clothing, Man Overboard, Contact In Red Square, Fan Mail, Attack of the Giant Ants, Youth Nabbed As Sniper, Bermuda Triangle Blues, etc. Stuff like that. I would seriously pass out.

As would I! Although I would also implore them to be careful with it. While I lovvved the "In the Flesh" on the Live 1999 DVD, what they've been doing with "Rip her to shreds" recently is sacriligeous in my opinion. Sped it all up, and you can't even hear the awesome keyboard that I always thought MADE the song!
In conclusion, I give the crew my blessing to proceed... but they'd better proceed with caution
When is the new album coming out, anyway?

She sounded like she did back in the day on In the Flesh for Live '99. I like any version of Rip Her To Shreds, that's one I never tire of. They get props for changing the songs with each tour, though, The Tide Is High is like a brand new song recently and Deb has been doing a techno version of In the Flesh for a little while. The one song I don't care for live is Rules For Living. That's one of my all time favorites, but for some reason, the guitar seems really weak in the live setting.

No clue. Last I heard, there was talk of a solo album, but then Chris posted that they were writing new stuff for a new album that was going to be a raw record with less production. He also said Debbie is writing her autobiography, so I can't wait for that one.

I never, never, never saw the big deal with that song! Jimmy Destri went on record saying it was the best song he'd ever written. I laughed out loud when I read that, haha. I remember thinking: whatever, dude. All the years of hard drugging had finally gotten to him. It's grown on me, but I still don't think it touches some of his late 70's/early 80's stuff.
I'm just weird, I guess. I absolutely love 11 of the songs (the first four, and the last 7) on The Curse, and the others I just don't connect with at all.

Ooh, I think it's magic. The guitar on it takes my breath away and the lyrics are so vivid. Her voice is rich and controlled, and that cooing of "Ooh, I've been this way before, I'll come this way again" makes me weak. It's a serious song that doesn't lose their trademark sense of humor. It makes me feel like I'm walking on air when I hear it. Sort of like with Night Wind Sent, the first time I heard it, I fell in love with it. Those two are the most majestic songs they've ever done, I love to fall asleep to them. I find them very comforting.

No Exit, now there's an album I haven't listened to in a while. I'll pull it out tonight!
