I think its a pretty cool song, she sounds great and its an interesting comparison she does with Monroe,Garbo and Dietrich. Though some here I would think find that her comparing herlself to those legends is a bit pretentious, I find it enlightening.

Hmmm...not a huge fan of the song. I'm not sure why, it just never did anything for me

Stevie said at Storytellers that it was written about when she and LB posed nude for the BN album cover and how hard and painful it was to do it. She said she had a bad experience doing that. I had always loved the song, but I understood it so much more after hearing her tell that story. Especially when she sings the line " or you could forget ". She had to accept that there was a seedy side to the buisness, even though she hated that part of it. Or forget about trying to become famous as BN. She later said she knew after BN didn't work out that she wasn't going to go in the direction of selling sex to make music and she sure stuck by that! Her music doesn't need sex to sell. I think alot of talented people go that route when they don't have to.Yup, love that song!

I always liked the demo version but didn't care for the "official" recorded b-side version..... I LOVED it at the Enchanted concert though

I've always loved this song, maybe because I'm a big fan of all three women mentioned. I think the vocal is really haunting also, both on the B-side and the demo version.

I like this song - it's not a big favourite, but I like it. I love the waltzing tempo - it's rare to hear someone sing a waltz. And I quite love the lyrics. They're very sad. I don't find it pretentious, because I don't think she's comparing herself to these great screen legends. Rather, I think she's just daydreaming about being one of them, or imagining herself as one of them. Does that make sense? She is thinking about how she has to play a part, play a role, pretend to be something she's not - much like they did. I think this is especially meaningful when you hear that she wrote it after the Buckingham Nicks photo shoot. It was almost like when women were told 'you just close your eyes and think about the queen." Same thing - just close your eyes to your own beliefs and do what the Hollywood bigwigs tell you to do if you want to be a star. I think this is why through the rest of her career, Stevie did what she wanted - the way she wanted things done - and she always made sure she was in complete control.

Great song with some of Stevie's best lyrics ever ("You think you must do what you feel you do best") & perfect Jimmy Iovine production -- mainstream, clear, delineated, excellent vocal & slide guitar.
Interesting use of prepositional phrases for each enjambment -- sort of tick-tocky but it works in a halted, emotional way.
Also very clever of Stevie to use Dietrich's & Monroe's first names -- more "music" in the language.

It's a beautiful song, very simple and direct, IMo she doesn't compare herself to those legends, but says the choices a young aspirant actress or singer has to make to get where she wants keep being the same.
