Renee Zellweger & Kenny Chesney Split

September 15, 2005
ET has confirmed that RENEE ZELLWEGER and country crooner KENNY CHESNEY have filed to anull their marriage of just over 4 months.

The two tied the knot in a surprise ceremony back in May on the beautiful island of St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands, where the singer has a home. In a short, 15-minute ceremony performed by a female preacher in front of a small group of family and friends, the bride wore CAROLINA HERRERA, one of her favorite designers, while the groom was reportedly barefoot.

The two met at the Concert of Hope tsunami relief effort last January 15 and maintained a quiet friendship that quickly blossomed. Fans first learned of their romance when Renee reportedly brought a margarita up on stage to Kenny during his show in Jacksonville, FL.

This was the first marriage for both stars, although the 37-year-old Kenny reportedly broke off an engagement to another woman in 1999, three weeks before the wedding. Prior to marrying Kenny, Renee dated WHITE STRIPES singer JACK WHITE and her 'Me, Myself & Irene' co-star JIM CARREY.

Watch ET tonight for the latest on their split.

What suprises me is the longevity of the Tim McGraw /Faith Hill marriage. It's already lasted a good deal longer than the marriage of the far ,far more talented George Jones and Tammy Wynette.

Well, I don't think talent should play in factor in how long a marriage lasts. They seem to be pretty much in love!

I guess you have a point there .If talent was the indicator for marriage longevity then Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson's marriage would have ended one nanosecond after the preacher said 'And now you may kiss the bride".

Please. If talent was the indicator, they wouldn't have gotten past the "speak now or forever hold your peace" line!

You have to remember though, George had a serious drinking problem at that time. They may well have lasted the course if he hadn't been drunk all the time. I love George but poor Tammy.

Well, Tim McGraw's reaction, which was filmed when he heard the news, was that he always thought Kenny was gay.

But then again, Renee may have checked the fraud box by mistake - unable to see what she was doing through her squinty little eyes.

most believe Kenny Cheese-wad (Not a fan of his music) is actually gay and in denile, Cause he has built a career on girls oogling over him....And he knows if the truth was that he is gay and that he was 'outed' that he would not only lose those females who make up a great majority of his fanbase but that being gay in country music would be the deathkneel that ends his career.

Well, before she headed to Hollywood for fame and fortune - she used to date a guy named Sims Ellison, who was in a metal band called Pariah. Tragically, he committed suicide, Kurt Cobain style...not while they were together, but a couple years after she moved to LA. Locally, there is an organization that was formed in his honor, the SIMS Foundation (http://simsfoundation.org/home/). Renee thanked him during her Golden Globes acceptance speech. Sims and his hot brother Kyle can both be seen in Madonna's "Deeper and Deeper" video. :)

I'm sure Brucie can add more on this, he knew Sims quite well...even named one of his kitties after him...and I think he still has an answering machine message saved somewhere, from Renee, from way back in the day....I used to stand right next to her at Pariah shows. for San Antonio's own Pariah, I still have all the **** they used to send me to spread the word about, Plus I still own one of their awesome demo tapes "Rattle Your Skull" (Which contains the killer song "God Blessed the Wicked") ...They were a great band who got majorly hosed by Geffen Records after their debut ("To Mock a Killingbird") was released...Which partially caused some of Sims depression.

It was sad when Sim's died, And cannot imagine what his brother Kyle went through....Every once in awhile the surviving members (Shandon Sahm-Drums, Dave Derrick-Vocals, Jared "Syn" Tuten-Guitar & Kyle Ellison-Guitar) will get together and play a show, Though it's been a couple of years since the last get-together.

I knew Kyle played in the Meat Puppets, Don't recall what's up with Dave...Shandon was reportedly playing around Texas with his Dad Doug Sahm and his group (Maybe it's his younger brother Shawn playing with their Dad) and Jared has done production for bands in/around Texas and plays in a band with Jason McMasters of Dangerous Toys fame.

Still have their press kit, a lil water damaged on the corners but still intact and complete...I miss those dudes, So I played the "Rattle Your Skull" demo last night for ol' times sake.

Explaining Zellweger's "Fraud" Claim By Joal Ryan
Fri Sep 16, 9:01 PM ET

When Renee Zellweger called Kenny Chesney a "fraud," she meant it only in the best way.

The Oscar-winning actress attempted to clarify Friday why her four-month marriage to the country singer all but ended this week when she filed for an annulment, citing "fraud."

In a statement, the Cold Mountain star called the term "simply legal language and not a reflection of Kenny's character."

"Oh, I beg to differ," Glen L. Rabenn, a family law attorney based in Seal Beach, California, said with a laugh when read Zellweger's words. "What is it then? She's saying the guy is a fraud. Doesn't that go to character?"

Attorney John Mayoue, an Atlanta litigator who has represented the likes of Jane Fonda, called the "fraud" declaration "very unusual for a high-profile case."

"Most celebrities who have a public name to protect would not make this kind of public allegation," said Mayoue. "When famous people call us, we try to find a way under the radar, so to speak."

In California, where Zellweger filed, annulments are rare, seemingly by design, among the famous and non-famous. The state that invented the no-fault divorce is a stickler on annulments. "You've got to prove your grounds," Rabenn said. "You've got to go to court."

In Nevada, where Britney Spears ended her 55-hour union to childhood friend Jason Allen Alexander in 2004, a bride can annul her marriage simply by declaring, as the pop star did, that she "lacked understanding of her actions." But in California, the annulment seeker must declare one of the following: That he or she was under age; that one of the parties was already married; that someone was of "unsound mind"; that the marriage was entered into by "force"; that one of the parties suffered "physical incapacity"; or, that "fraud" had been perpetuated.

"Fraud is a very high standard," Mayoue said. "For a court to accept this for fraud, it's going to have to be a very egregious situation."

Under California law, a fraudulent marriage means, in part, "the consent of either party was obtained by fraud." In layman's terms, Rabenn explained a hypothetical case this way: A newlywed couple checks into a honeymoon suite; the husband pulls out a document declaring that he's impotent; the wife, previously unaware of this situation, checks out--and calls her lawyer.

To Rabenn, the big question in the Zellweger filing is "Why?"--as in: "Why did someone bother raising the fraud allegation?"

In a joint statement released to Entertainment Tonight, Zellweger and Chesney said "the miscommunication of this objective of their marriage at the start of is the only reason for this annulment."

Zellweger, 36, and Chesney, 37, wed May 9 in the Virgin Islands. While their courtship proceeded at light speed, they'd met just five months prior, the ceremony was not exactly impromptu. Family and friends were present; an official wedding photo released.

Whispers of their demise were heard as early as the summer. The bad buzz got louder last week when Zellweger walked the red carpet at the London premiere of Cinderella Man without Chesney, who'd finally wrapped the tour that had kept him on the road for much of their marriage.

"I would personally be very grateful for your support in refraining from drawing derogatory, hurtful, sensationalized or untrue conclusions," Zellweger said Friday. "We hope to experience this transition as privately as possible."

In his own statement, Chesney echoed Zellweger's sentiment. "I just hope everyone can respect the privacy I know Renee has already asked for," he said.

Rabenn said he would expect the couple to have the matter handled privately, complete with a private judge. "It's very likely you will never know about this," he said.

I became close with the Ellison brothers and Dave Derrick way back in the late 80's. At the time, I had my own radio show on KSYM and I played PARIAH constantly - and had them as my on air guest's a few times - giving them mega exposure in San Antonio. Getting a credit on their TO MOCK A KILLINGBIRD cd is something I am very proud of. I loved them. I believed in them. :wavey:

Sims was one of the sweetest guys I have ever known. His death was something that shook me to the core. There really isn't a day that goes by when I don't think about him. I did, in fact, name one of my cats after him.
Sims was a total doll. I loved him... :xoxo:

Renee was, at the time, a budding actress and she was a sweet girl just starting out in her career. Its mind blowing what she has accomplished.
Livia, you know me too well...yes, I still have phone messages with her on tape. LOL I love the fact that when she wins any kind of award, that she always thanks Sims. He supported her completely.

BTW, Jared recorded the entire CRUEL & GENTLE THINGS release by Charlie Sexton -- which is my current obsession. Just gorgeous.
(Dont get me started on those Sexton boys...)
