View Full Version : Stevie NOT performing at Katrina Benefit

From Taku's message board:

Stevie Nicks will not be performing at the Madison Square Garden benefit now, so I will just be there with The Neville Brothers. My wife will be covering the event for Fox and A Current Affair. For all of those concerned Stevie fans out there, she is fine. It all just came down to last minute logistics. Things are still in flux with the event and a couple of other performers have dropped out (including, from what I hear, Rod Stewart and James Taylor), and others (such as Dave Matthews) are now doing other benefits.

Lovely. I wish would have known this before tickets went onsale. I know it is a wonderful cause with a great lineup but it is on a Tuesday and I never would have went without Stevie on a work night.
That "logistics" story by Taku makes zero sense either. What does other people dropping out have to do with Stevie?

Yeah. I agree. I don't buy it. Logistics? Like what? Flying from Arizona to New York? I wonder if the organizers didn't decide that they only wanted Big A-Listers? Because as much as WE all adore and worship Stevie, she is not an A-Lister in today's musical world (which is just fine with me). But I really wonder about this. I don't have the full list of artists handy, so my theory could be wrong. Anyway, definitely a disappointment. I really was curious what she'd sing.

ON EDIT: I wonder if she dropped out because the organization of the whole thing isn't good. I re-read Taku's explanation; it sounds as if he may be implying that lots of artists are dropping out because it's not being well organized? Just a thought.

I'd say Stevie is an A-lister. People like her, Bette Midler, James Taylor even Elton John - they may not be selling singles anymore nor do most 14 year olds care about them but they're still some of the BIGGEST names in music. I don't think it has anything to do with their current popularity but like Taku said - the planning.

Maybe Stevie wanted to do a song that needed more rehearsal time or a different arrangment. Something she hasn't done in years. "Storms" would have been perfect.

Bette Midler? Along with Elton, she's the most recognizable one of the lot. And as of yesterday, John Mayer, Joss Stone, Dave Matthews, Trey Anastasio, and Tom Waits were added for a simultaneous concert at Radio City under the same banner.

That "logistics" story by Taku makes zero sense either.

It sounds like BS to me. All she has to do is get on a plane to sing a song or two at one of the two benefits under the "Big Apple To New Orleans" banner. Does she need two months advance notice to do so?

That's really unfortunate for those who have already bought tickets. It's also unfortunate, that TM is STILL advertising the show as having Stevie on the bill..

I absoloutely agree with this and what Taku said. I don't think it has to do with her Dad's death. I would say if anything she was looking forward to doing a benefit and it would have been something that would have made her feel good and helped her in the healing process. It must have something to do with poor organiziation and perhaps some other logistics we are unaware of.

I'm sorry for those of you who were planning on going to see our girl.

Since she has the day to herself now, maybe she can go to Peter Jennings' memorial and talk about TISL. It is her little masterpiece you know.

Yeah, I went there.

More from Taku:

Well, the decision was just made on Stevie's part Monday or Tuesday, and we were all just notified on Tuesday afternoon. Things kept changing in the format for the show and the show organizers kept vacillating between having artists do their own songs, or collaborating with other artists, or specifically doing New Orleans-themed songs. In fact, I think they are still trying to figure everything out.

Time began to run out in terms of finding out whether or not she could take her band, which would equate to lots of logistics in terms of airplane tickets and hotel rooms... especially since there is at least one other big benefit concert as well as a large United Nations conference in NYC at the same time. Rather than not have her band there, and/or be forced into singing songs that she was not comfortable with (purely from a musical and performance-quality standpoint), she opted to not do the concert. She is undoubtedly helping the cause in countless other ways, but I'm sure that she is sorry that her fans will miss her.

Hopefully the concert organizers will get on the ball and publicize the final lineup for the concert soon. Unfortunately, it seems like they are not all that organized quite yet, and still scrambling to get things together for next week.

I will definitely post my experiences there with the Neville Brothers, which I'm sure will end up being a great concert. Still not 100% on whether I will play with the 'Brothers, but I will enjoy the hang either way.

d;aflkhdas;oiyew;oiyds;ouigsda;oi;o!!!!!!!! Grrrr!!

I guess the logistics explanation is plausible (whatevs...) . But even if she can't get her act together, do you suppose she could just go and introduce the acts? Read a poem or two? Bang the tambourine a bit? Kick it with Elton on "The Bitch is Back?" And as for HAEWAFY, I'm sure she could get away with performing it with just piano accompaniment with Sharon and Lori (with Taku on triangle :p ). There's no need to bring her entire Gold Dust Tour entourage to the Ritz Carlton.

Perhaps there is a glimmer of hope that somehow the logistics will become straightened out and she will reconsider? This does seem to have been put together rather hastily, so she should realize that it isn't going to come off without any hitches.

I don't blame her for pulling out. It sounds like a disorganized nightmare. Logistics ARE a huge sticking point, and Stevie is pro enough to know it. They don't know what they want her to do ? They don't know the format ? When the hell ARE they going to rehearse ? You can't just pull a block of hotel rooms out of your butt, not at the hotels she likes to stay at anyway. Sounds like a mess.
She is wise to stay away. The plane tickets, the scheduling...disaster waiting to happen. Doesn't sound like the people putting this together have staged a PTA bake sale.

Seriously, it sounds like many declined - it must be pretty bad

I am soooooo glad me and my posse did not buy tickets, etc. I mean that could have been $1,500 + down the drain in airfare, hotel room, etc. - though La Nicks and I would have been in residence at the Towers at the same time. Hey, maybe my Scotties could have hung with the Yorkies  Actually, I am seeing more of a catfight over who got what suite  But, the tickets are to a good cause I guess.

According to this article, Rod pulled out due to an injury, but may still perform.

Joss Stone has joined the lined-up for the latest benefit concert to be planned in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Stone will join Tom Waits, Dave Matthews and the Meters, amongst many others, for the show at New York's Radio City Music Hall on September 20.

The event is to be held simultaneously with another fundraising gig at the city's Madison Square Garden

Simon & Garfunkel, making their first live appearance since July 2004, are to be joined by Elvis Costello, Elton John, John Fogerty, Lenny Kravitz, Ry Cooder, Stevie Nicks and Fats Domino.

Rod Stewart is reported to have been forced to pull-out of the show, "due to injury," but a spokesperson told Rolling Stone he may yet recover from shoulder surgery to play.

Proceeds from the shows are to be donated to groups such as the Bush Clinton Katrina Fund, Habitat For Humanity, the MusiCares Hurricane Relief Fund and the Children's Health Fund.

Meanwhile, Nelly has become the latest musician to step into the breach and support the thousands of people whose lives have been decimated by the hurricane.

The hip hop star is understood to have sent two 18-wheeler trucks full of supplies to the affected area, following a fundraising drive he hosted in his hometown of St Louis, Missouri.

Nelly told MTV: "Everyone came out. It was unbelievable."

C'mon, let's be a little bit more realistic. It's not like they've had months to plan this huge concert event, they're trying to do the most that they can in a short period of time. It would be foolish not to expect quite a bit of disorganization. From what I can see, the only one to have really pulled out is Stevie. Rod Stewart did it because of his shoulder, but might make it, anyway. It does seem like a mess at this point, but I think it's a little understandable.

In my opinion?

They blew it.

BOTTOM line.

NEVER, NEVER put a Major Rock Star in a position where he or she

could be embarrassed by not seeming to be prepared.

That's a threat to their career, which just simply ain't gonna happen.

It reminds me of the season finale of "The Apprentice" with Bill Rancic.

I feel that it's very telling that the other major stars,

such as Rod Stewart and James Taylor, have also walked.

From what Taku said on his web page, I bet Stevie must've been like,

I get that it's unorganized, but still. Does she need her whole band there with her to do one or two songs? Is one performance for the benefit of these people going to "threaten her career"? I agree; even though it seems as if this whole thing is being organized as well as the Hurricane Katrina rescue efforts were, I can't imagine it would be that daunting to show up and do a song or sing harmony with another artist when you've been performing live for 35 years. But she does say she has awful stage fright.

Maybe she wanted to sing one of her songs (as she really does seem to feel her songs have a healing element to them) -- and they told her she couldn't sing her own song(s)?

I don't understand why she couldn't just go and be spontaneous. I am sure she could have pulled off singing a song she hasn't spent months rehearsing on. IF she can't then she should have gotten somebody to play the piano for her while she sang HAEWAFY.

Yes, I agree with you.

The person that put Stevie, and Sir Rod Stewart, and Billy Joel, and

James Taylor, in this embarrassing position, where they were forced to

walk, should be fired. They're just not any good at this,

and don't understand their job. :]

Ghost_Tracker

I'm just guessing but I think maybe there really were some practical

issues. Moving Stevie's band from points A, B, C, D, E, and F to point

G is VERY very expensive - THOUSANDS of dollars - and takes time and

organization and coordination - but they put her (and Her People!!!)

in a position where a week before the concert, she had no way of even

knowing who or what would be required. I honestly do feel that anybody

would have walked under those circumstances, as Stevie, and also

Rod Stewart ( SHOULDER injury??? c'mon... ) and also James Taylor, and

also Billy Joel, and also Elton John, I believe, have done. ( I guess the

last two never signed on - apparently some people already realized that

this was gonna be a train wreck. ) With another major benefit concert

going on, as well as a major event at the U.N., on the same day -

where would Stevie's People have stayed? How many rooms would be

required? With Stevie still mourning her Dad's passing, I just really don't

blame her for walking from this particular benefit concert. And I'd also

like to mention that most stars don't do this stuff for free - Sharon Stone,

bless her heart and her 150 I.Q., charges one million dollars for some

appearances at charity gigs. Stevie offerred to do this for free, at a

time when it was extremely inconvenient for her and immediately after

she raised over 1 million dollars for the Research Building at the

Heart Institute. There'll be other benefit concerts and I betcha Stevie

will do something else. As for the tickets already bought -

I agree - Stevie should SUE 'em for doing this to her!!! ( )

I really do find it REALLY interesting that *ALL* of the major stars walked.

Betcha "Her People" ( read: Sheryl Louis ) suggested it to her.

At any rate, I think it wasn't just one problem - from experience Stevie

realized that this thing is gonna be a disaster -

Not directed at you Ryan, but I'm still not sure why anyone is surprised Stevie would decline to perform. As Taku said, MSG still isn't even sure what format they'll be using for the show.
I can't imagine flying in and being handed the sheetmusic to a song I've never sung before, and being told to learn it quick because I'll be singing it in front of a few thousand people two nights later.

This concert is so disorganized, Taku couldn't even confirm whether or not he'd actually be playing, or if he'd just be there to support his in-laws!

By the way, I just thought of something - I betcha Stevie could do

ANY song "spontaneously," without rehearsing - in her own home -

but don't forget, she sometimes gets TERRIBLY nervous during performances,

especially in front of such a large crowd and when it's such a big deal and

would mean a lot to her. So maybe it's natural for her to feel

uncomfortable with such a disorganized situation and with not even

I don't blame her for pulling out. It sounds like a disorganized nightmare. Logistics ARE a huge sticking point, and Stevie is pro enough to know it. They don't know what they want her to do ? They don't know the format ? When the hell ARE they going to rehearse ? You can't just pull a block of hotel rooms out of your butt, not at the hotels she likes to stay at anyway. Sounds like a mess.
She is wise to stay away. The plane tickets, the scheduling...disaster waiting to happen. Doesn't sound like the people putting this together have staged a PTA bake sale.

Yes, but I THINK maybe they kept telling her different things about

what THEY wanted her to do - each one of those things would require

different people and different arrangements, which cost time and money.

For example, if they asked her to perform "Has anyone ever written"

with Brent Tuggle playing piano, he needs to get his piano there,

and her people need to arrange a hotel room for him - which, from what

I hear, is going to be difficult for that date. THEN all of a sudden they

change their mind and want a DIFFERENT song with Taku instead.

THEN they change their minds AGAIN! And then she hears through the

grapevine that they're pulling the same crap with Rod Stewart, James

Taylor, etc. It's just simply not acceptable.

I hardly think that Stevie's career is in any danger at this point.

It seems a little odd to me that Stevie would agree to something before the details and logistics were finalized, allow her name to be used in announcements, and then wait until after tickets go on sale to pull. Seems like she shouldn't have signed up in the first place.

I agree. Why does she need to bring her entire band and entourage? This is a benefit concert. She might want to do Has Anyone but if it came down to having her entire band there or pulling out...why the heck didn't she just grab Waddy and do Landslide? I would rather have that than her just pull herself out because it is not organized and her entire band might not be able to play. I know she is not an "off the cuff" type person anymore but jeez, what is the big deal with singing one song with a guitar player? Just accept you might not be able to do HAEWAFY and go with the flow. She seems to have forgotten what this was all about.

BTW...I did buy a ticket and I am not that concerned about the money. I'm considering it another donation. However, I would not have bought that ticket, had Stevie's name not been on the bill.

Billboard (http://www.billboard.com/bb/search/article_display.jsp?schema=&vnu_content_id=1000965065)

John Fogerty / June 8, 2005 / New York (Irving Plaza)

Given the rare opportunity to see a legendary artist in a small venue, the fans who flocked to John Fogerty's June 8 appearance at Irving Plaza were more than willing to fork over the $75 required for a ticket, and sold out the show in no time.

Their loyalty was rewarded, for while Fogerty's nearly two-hour, 28-song set showcased a few new tunes, its heart was his hits -- some solo, but mostly the classic rockers from his days as frontman for the equally legendary Creedence Clearwater Revival.

Looking sharp in a crisp denim shirt and tight jeans, the still boyish-looking 60-year-old revved up the room right away, debuting his trademark, Little Richard-style howl on the rowdy rocker "Travelin' Band." Then, with the standing-room-only crowd's full attention, Fogerty smoothly segued into the trippy, psycho-blues of "Susie Q," then to the rootsy swamp rock of "Green River" and the haunting balladry of "Who'll Stop the Rain."

Fogerty seemed to be making up for the days when he was barred from performing Creedence songs due to legal disputes with former label Fantasy Records. Still a solid frontman, with his booming baritone as distinctive and powerful as ever, he also seemed to revel in his interplay with bandmates Billy Burnette (lead guitar), Bob Britt (guitar), Matt Nolen (keyboards and guitar), George Hawkins, Jr. (bass), and John Molo (drums).

Riding high on his recent induction into the Songwriter's Hall of Fame, solid reviews for his latest Geffen album, "Deja Vu All Over Again" and upcoming tour with John Mellencamp, Fogerty showed no trace of the bitterness he'd long held toward his former bandmates and label.

This night was all about pleasing the crowd, made up mostly of up middle-aged die-hards, some with their own teenaged kids in tow. And Fogerty kept rewarding them with hit after hit, including a more countrified version of "Lodi," his cautionary tale of life on the road. Then he went contemporary for the new disc's "Sugar-Sugar (In My Life)," a lilting lullaby to his young daughter. He then went back to the Creedence collection for the whimsical "Lookin' Out My Back Door," which had every toe tapping and earned a hearty ovation.

Fogerty revealed his country and bluegrass influences on "Rambunctious Boy" and "Blue Moon Nights," from his critically acclaimed 1997 release "Blue Moon Swamp." And while he's actually a Berkeley, Calif., native, Fogerty indulged his inner Cajun on the swamp-blues jam "Born on the Bayou", which featured dramatic, starry lighting over a spooky, black background during its extended break.

Fogerty used lighting even more effectively during his solo acoustic version of the title track from "Deja Vu" -- a song that could be subtitled "Who'll Stop the Rain II," for its melodic similarities and lyrical parallels between the Vietnam War and today's conflict in Iraq. Performing under one stark spotlight, Fogerty infused his understated yet palpable sense of frustration into the evocative ballad.

But the quiet moment didn't last, as Fogerty & co. served up several more rockers, including "Hey Tonight," followed by the finger-snapping, funk/soul of "Down on the Corner." That groove continued with a full band workout on Marvin Gaye's "Heard It Through the Grapevine," with Fogerty's soulful wails complementing his heartfelt harmonica solos. Its extended break built to a climactic guitar duet/duel between Fogerty and Burnette, with Nolan's jazzy keyboards running interference. A smooth segue into Ray Charles' "The Right Time" allowed the band to indulge in some fun call and response vocals.

"Maybe you know this scenario," said Fogerty. "You work real hard for years and years and years. And then, you're just on the verge of getting what you want, and the fools you're working with snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. And you go 'what?' So I wrote this song." As he sang "Have You Ever Seen the Rain," Fogerty appeared to still be wrestling with a demon or two.

His mood lightened for an upbeat classic. From its "La Bamba"-inspired intro to its "put me in coach" chorus, "Centerfield" captured the spirit of two great American pastimes. Sporting a custom guitar culled from a small baseball bat, Fogerty truly had his two great passions on full display.

The exhaustive set roared on, with a raucous rendition of "Up Around the Bend"; then a soulful "The Old Man Down the Road." "I want you to know something," gushed Fogerty. "Any time, any place, I'll play for you all. You are the best." And with that valentine to his New York fans, he raised the roof -- and many a clenched fist -- with his gritty working-class anthem "Fortunate Son".

The crowd was spent, but they truly reveled in the signature riverboat raveup, "Proud Mary" -- a three-chord classic that still inspires every city slicker's inner Huck Finn. The club may have stood firmly on Manhattan island, but it sure sounded like the muddy banks of the Mississippi.

Here is John Fogerty's set list:

"Travelin' Band"
"Susie Q"
"Green River"
"Who'll Stop the Rain"
"It Came Out of the Sky"
"Lodi"
"Sugar Sugar (In My Life)"
"Lookin' Out My Back Door"
"Rambunctious Boy"
"Blue Moon Nights"
"Sweet Hitchhiker"
"Born on the Bayou"
"Midnight Special"
"Run Through the Jungle"
"Bootleg"
"Deja Vu (All Over Again)"
"Hey Tonight"
"Down on the Corner"
"Heard It Through the Grapevine"
"The Right Time"
"Have You Ever Seen the Rain?"
"Tombstone Shadow"
"Centerfield"
"Up Around the Bend"
"The Old Man Down the Road"
"Fortunate Son"

Encore:

"Bad Moon Rising"
"Proud Mary"

Well, i can't say for sure, but i doubt your parents are multi-millionaire rock legends... no, Stevie is not your common typical 57 year old... I think she should know by now that she really needs to grow and change as an artist if she wants to remain viable in the music industry and being spontaneous is a large part of what will keep her fresh (be it at age 57 or 27, or 77).

But my point is at this stage in her life (no matter who the heck she is) she is going to do exactly what she wants to do, regardless of what people like you and I think she should do to keep herself "viable" in the music industry. Perhaps that's just not a priority. And trust me, I agree with you. I would love nothing more than for her to be this risk-taking, spontaneous, rock star suprising fans across the globe but it's obviously not who she is at this point in her life and there is no sense in wanting to change her or make her something she is not. I'd rather just accept her for who she is and whatever choices she makes.

Well, after getting this on pay-for-view (it's not over yet), I think she made the right decision. It did seem somewhat disorganized, a lot of lag time....and the crowd seemed quiet for a venue that large. It was probably much better being there. Bette was hilarious (yes, democrats, I DID think her comments were funny...crude, but very funny!) Elton played piano for 15 minutes before he ever sang a note (it seemed) and then sounded like he was just getting over bronchitis or something. John Fogerty and Jimmy Buffet were great, IMO. But to sit in front of the TV for 6 hours hasn't been fun....maybe if I were there....

I ordered it in my friend's apartment and put a tape in to record it. He's still here at my place and bitching about having to watch CNN and Nip/Tuck with me.

I'll probably skip through it this weekend.

I agree that Stevie would have been a rather odd fit at the Katrina benefit. It seems that, in general, female artists got totally shortchanged while the male artists got to do relatively lengthy sets. Even Bette Midler only got a single number. I would not be surprised if Stevie was expecting to do a 20-30-minute headlining set like Elton, et al., but backed out when she was told to do duets with Irma Thomas or the Dixie Cups (like Cyndi Lauper did). Don't get me wrong... I thought they were great... but I think that is totally not Stevie's element at all. Stevie is a soulful singer, but she is definitely not a soul singer!

And being there in the audience, it was abundantly clear that most people were there for... frickin' Jimmy Buffett! Yipes, his set was PAINFUL  to sit through. But the crowd (a sea of middle-aged white people) was loving it and doing sharkfin movements and echoing the word "salt" during Margaritaville... WTF?? What is it with white people and their fascination with Jimmy Buffett? I felt like Jane Goodall sitting among and observing the chimpanzees :p ; they were going bananas over this middle-of-the-road, bland, corny cruise ship music. Same thing with Dave Matthews... I would rather poke my ears out with lobster claws than sit through one of his shows, but, again, I could see people running to their seats when he came on during Buffett's set to warble "Heart of Gold." He's a good looking guy... but he can't sing!

Interestingly enough there were some Stevie connections there- obviously Taku played with Bette. Bill Payne (from the Wild Heart Tour) played with Jimmy Buffett. And Billy Burnette played guitar for John Fogerty (who totally rawked, by the way).

Did anyone watch that benefit that was on Saturday night? Robin Williams took to the stage, then announced he was a hurricane that was heading towards Kennebunkport to see if the Bush's would respond faster.

Oh, that's nothing. I watched the Bette portion of the benefit from last night and she said that Bush's coke dealer got him a ticket to one of her shows in the seventies. And she said she accidentally received a letter from the RNC that thanked her for her contribution and she replied by writing "Go f*ck yourself!"

I was there, too, and I found myself sitting there during the Dixie cups performance with Cyndi Lauper, thinking "I cannot picture Stevie doing this". but, I still enjoyed it. I like Buffet well enough, and Dave Mathews, and John fogerty was AWESOME! :D
