View Full Version : What If They REMADE The Buckingham Nicks Album?

What if there were an announcement ~today~ that Stevie and Lindsey were remaking "Buckingham Nicks". The album, perfect in its entirety from the original, will be due out in a couple weeks. You, as a fan, can give some imput for this new album! Talk about FANTASY!!

How would this fly with you? Would you welcome "BN" in a modern world, or would you rather continue listening to it that way you know it? Would this album be MORE passionate between them...or less. Would the vocals be better for you?

I would like to hear Stevie's more "mature" voice on "Frozen Love." :)

WHAT IF PIGS FLEW OUT OF MY ASS AND I WON THE LOTTERY?!

anyways - no, I would not welcome it, and also, we have a modern BN, it's called Say You Will.

The problem, of course, would be the voices. Especially Stevie's. I suppose I wouldn't die if they did it, and maybe they (Lindsey) could arrange it so that it still sounds good (thank you stevie harmonies, however low the voice is) but...I think there would only be a few bright spots, and for the most part it would pale in comparison.
They obviously couldn't exactly, or even approximately, recreate it. Okay, maybe approximately. ie, about an octive lower.
But if they nailed it, even an octive lower, and did super harmonies, you know I'd love it! :p
I'd need very similar bandwork, though. No extra Lindsey overproduction and layering, no Stevie backup singers (she can keep her echo mic, though), no fifty musicians.

Mwah! hilarious. perfect answer.

Okay, when people cry about weird things, it makes me uncomfortable. Also, the fact that someone has a lace hanky makes me uncomfortable, too. Both of these things are best kept as private as possible.
 JK - I cried during a double shot of Just Like a Woman/Kick It this morning. But still, what I just said usually applies.

Indeed, but also, No.

Would you welcome "BN" in a modern world, or would you rather continue listening to it that way you know it?I don't listen to the old one any more & I don't think I'd listen to the new one. But I would really LOVE a new Buckingham Nicks album because it might come packaged with some great new insights & historical perspective on the Buckingham Nicks partnership & the album.

For me, it's all about the liner notes these days (even if they're facile & last-minute like on the reissues).

You're kidding, right?
"everything goes in cycles. Not everyone falls into a simple set of labels" plus...
"I recorded it in Sausalito, at sly stones studio in the record factory. It had this fabulous staircase leading down to a basement room. They were busy recording, and didn't need me, so I went down, and I wrote Dreams! and I'm usually shy about sharing my songs ( plz, btch!) but I wasn't shy about this one at all! (Insert something about a few chords that she knows on a piano) So I played Dreams for them, and blah etc!"

oops...uh...okay, I'm sure the insights would be different and special and better for BN - but...
"I was cleaning Keith Olsen's studio when we recorded this, and working as a waitress. Lindsey would stay home and practice his guitar all day.
And...we were very proud of our record....and it just got dropped, and we were back to square one".

That's my little reenactment of what will be said. :)

If these two seriously got together and did something outside Fleetwood Mac as Buckingham Nicks... I think they should release a double cd... One would be the reissue of Buckingham Nicks... The other would be a cd of new material.

I wouldn't like it. I'd buy it, of course, but it wouldn't be the same. I love BN the way it is. It probably gets more play from me than any other CD. I'd rather them release BN with outtakes, live tracks, demos....that would be cool. I'd love to hear demo versions of some of those songs! And I'd really like to hear a soundboard recording of Frozen Love live.

That would be awesome! I'd probably like it either way: I love the old BN with young voices, and a dated sound, but it would be cool to hear an updated version with "mature" voices, and a tinge of jadedness in the lyrics...ok...A LOT of jadedness in the lyrics...

Stevie and Lindsey are yet to dissapoint me. A remade Buckingham Nicks would be different, how ever it would be awesome in it's own new way, it's the same with some of Stevie's demos, they are great but they are almost like different songs to the finished product so I think it would be great.

No, no, noooooooo! I would be really disappointed if they ever decided to remake BN. I think that album is absolutely perfect. I would hate to hear it remixed and overdubbed. I'd hate to hear it sung today in different keys. No. It stands as a moment in time. It should never be redone.

Now, Buckingham Nicks II? Absolutely!! Get the two of them together - write new songs together and record a new album together. No, I don't consider SYW to be this. Lindsey's sings were already done; Stevie just added her vocals. And she brought her songs in. Plus, John and Mick are on it. I'd like to see a project done entirely by Stevie and Lindsey only. Well, one can dream.

Exactly. I think if they re-did BN it would be completely butchered. The album is perfection the way it is. A double album (that would make Lindsey happy :p ) with the original, and a totally new BN would be fabulous. They needn't touch the original though.

I would tell them that it's a horrible idea and I'd prefer to hear the album in it's original, perfect form without the sound of phlegm rattling in Stevie's throat. I also don't need to hear Lindsey's endless noodling added to it or his endless studio tricks to take away from the simplicity of it.

I agree...

on another note, iTunes recently added Tusk and their review of it was not very nice towards Lindsey (not actually a surprise but I guess it's the tone that was shocking to me), while they seemed to bask in the glow that is La Nicks

I would prefer the old one, with additional "lost" tracks. I much prefer Stevie's younger voice, not that she doesn't sound great now, but I love the B/N voice...Rumours...Mirage...Belladonna...etc...

I would warmly welcome it. Obviously it would be totally different from the first, and I wouldn't expect anythig similar. They're different artists now, with different voices, much more experience and the dynamic between them looks fairly different to me. It would be very interesting to listen new music from them sans FM. My only doubt would be: are they capable at this point of their life to work on a record from the ground up arriving both alive at the end?

oops...uh...okay, I'm sure the insights would be different and special and better for BN - but...That's my little reenactment of what will be said. :)Ah, but you're assuming the liner notes are written by Stevie. I say no bloody way to that. Genuine insights & historical perspective would be offered by grand old rock critics, like Stephen Holden, Steve Pond, Greil Marcus, Ben Fong-Torres or Ken Tucker.

Chrissy Hynde is the only pop artist I can think of who might write good liner notes, her having worked briefly as a journalist before she started the Pretenders. Stevie's liner notes would be really stupid & vague; I wouldn't want that.

How about a rerelease of Buckingham Nicks remastered digitally in a box containing the CD AND a DVD concert of a 1975 Fleetwood Mac show, featuring a couple of Buckingham Nicks songs? The box would be sort of like "Enchanted," with a booklet of dozens & dozens of photos -- Buckingham Nicks in concert in 1973 & 1974, Fleetwood Mac hiring the new members in 1975, Fleetwood Mac playing early gigs with the newbies -- & GREAT LINER NOTES, TEN PAGES LONG IN SMALL TYPE, WRITTEN BY KEN TUCKER!!

It wouldn't. :) I've long suspected that Lindsey's been locked in his closet, er, I mean studio tweaking this recording for the last twenty years trying to get it right (in his own mind). I think he has the missing masters that Ken Caillat was looking for. I kid.

What would the point be in trying to recreate a work that has already been done? If they were to remake the album today it should be all new interpretaitons of the songs. Look at the beauty of pairing off the new Nomad with the original. A sweet little guitar piece with a young Stevie crooning mournfully later becomes a lush, bittersweet song with a woman looking back on her life. And No Light was a great song with a young girl singing a fairytale but when the mature woman sings "I was wrong to live for a dream, if I had my life to live over I would never dream" in Planets of the Universe, it sends chills down one's spine.

Could you imagine what kind of huge rock song Crying in the Night would be with Lindsay's lifetime of guitar experience and Stevie's time strengthened vocals? I think it would be pretty cool. A waste of time, maybe, but fun nonetheless.

I just remembered something. I saw the Rolling Stones in 99 in Orange County and right in the middle of their set, they walked off stage, down a runway into a smaller stage in the middle of the arena. This little stage was set up like a stage in a pub, with old sytle mics and small amps piped into the main sound system. The effect was like going back in time to when the band was just starting out and doing drunken bar shows. It was amazing. So rather than remaking an existing album (which, as I said, would pretty much be a waste of time), a more realitic fantasy would be to do a small setlist from Buckingham Nicks during a Fleetwood Mac show.

in my most desperate fantasies, BNII is released. i see it this way:

double album

1) original, untouched BN on one side with original cover

2) newly re-recorded version of the same perfect album on the other side, with a modern day recreation of the cover. maybe it's a little shipper, but whatever. she could wear pasties? ;)

i think it would be fabulous. i'd love to hear these songs today. it could never trump the original, but it could be great nonetheless. if for nothing other than nostalgic value.

also, in my dream setlist, during the acoustic interlude they play gypsy a la AHI and crystal. the two of them, singing that song
as a duet - how fabulous!

so to answer the original question, it would fly.

I? Would be pissed off (but would buy it anyway).

A) It is a rare occasion indeed when an artist rerecords an old song and actually improves it (or even manages not to ruin it completely).

B) I wouldn't want another damn project getting in the way of a new LB solo album!

Personally I like the freshness of the '73 version. I think somehow they would tone the album down quite a bit if they were to do it now. I would've liked to hear Stevie and Lindsey do some of those tunes live....but definitely NOT a redux of the album.

I don't think it would do much for me. It's just an okay album for me to begin with (I'd put it on the same level as the Mac's "Penguin"). There are only three to five songs that I absolutely love, and the rest not so much. I frankly don't see what they would accomplish by doing something like this. I think, for the most part, they're both so beyond that album as songwriters these days that something like that would be a step backwards. If they're going to do any new recordings together, I say they just do another Fleetwood Mac album.

It NEEDS to be officially released/remastered on cd. Lindsey and Stevie should take it on as a "solo" project as well. Include outtakes from the BN era, maybe redo a few of the old songs(with the originals still intact), and record a few new songs for the release. I'd buy it as soon as it hit the shelves. :woohoo:

Musically speaking, they're doing essentially the same thing then as they are today: both writing their own songs, Lindsey arranging the material, adding a rhythm section to the recording & performance mix, both singing solo & harmony front & center.

That's Buckingham Nicks -- how can people quibble?

You know, until I heard the live version of "Rhiannon" from Buckingham Nicks, I was among the many who felt SYW was basically a Buckingham Nicks album. But then I heard said performance, and I now realize that Mick and John add that certain something that makes it a different beast altogether. I don't think songs like "Smile At You" would have been as great with a hired hand.
