What's more annoying to you guys? When someone spells Lindsey's name Lindsay, when People spell Rumours Rumors, or when people think Stevie is a guy. I had that happen to me the other day. I went into this record store and this like 16 year old with a huge nose ring was working. I asked him where the Stevie Nicks section was. He told me, WHo's HE?!?!?!?! I shook my head and walked away. I dont know whether to laugh or cry. :distress:

Yeah, I try not to let little things like this bother me. If I did, I would probably be dead from some stress related condition by now.

I have the sigs turned off on my computer, but they used to drive me crazy.
I do find it annoying when people spell Lindsey's name Lindsay on this board. I mean, what the hell are you doing here if you don't even know the band members' names?
I have the sigs turned off on my computer, but they used to drive me crazy.
How do you do that? Without turning of all images? (edit.. I found it myself already ;) )
Though, some sigs are pretty funny or worth seeing.

That's true, I do miss seeing some of them, but on the whole it's easier when you're on dial-up. Plus it's better when you're reading the board at work!

It seems in Australia, that every record store i go to, they have no idea who fleetwood mac or stevie nicks are.
I rang up a store the other day to see if the mirage dvd was in and she said fleetwood mac don't exist and she had never heard of them.
I was in shock i think.
I thought Fleetwood Mac were a well known band.
Thanks for letting me get that out

Then they need to fire her ass. Seriously, I get that people might now know the actual band members' names (though, Stevie Nicks, come on, that's a household name), but I do wonder what rock you have been living under if you've never heard of Fleetwood Mac. Especially when you work at a record store.
For me the most annoying thing is that when I tell someone I am into Fleetwood Mac, they respond with: Those hippies?! I have a friend who just looooves to keep calling them that whenever he is around me.

The only thing that annoys me is when people intentionally misspell words. Like "dremah" or "survivah" or **** like that all the time. It drives me nucking futs. Truly. These people obviously have a moderate amount of smarts if they're able to use a computer and sign up for a message board, you'd think that they could spell properly.

The misspellings annoy me sometimes. *sigh* It's so tough being a teenage female fan at school. That's the worst.
Me: "My God, Lindsey Buckingham is so sexy."

Me: "My God, Stevie Nicks is so cool."

...when people presume that every single song that Stevie and Lindsey write are about each other. Granted, Stevie has found a great deal of inspiration in her prior relationship with Lindsey. Still, her lyrics are so oblique...and such a mish mash of references...even she has (re-)interpreted her songs differently over the years. I'd think that she's had other dramas and life-enriching experiences (without Lindsey) that she draws upon.

Honestly? I've got much bigger things to worry about. Like the fact that I've been locked out of my job now for 5 weeks (for those unfamiliar with - this is a labour dispute - my employer has locked us out over a contract dispute. I have no income - I'm walking a picket line) - where my mortgage payment is coming from is a tad more important to me right now.
I don't force my love of FM or SN on anyone. I wouldn't want them to force their love of another band on me. I don't know the names of half the "bid stars" on radio right now. Big deal. To each his/her own. Seriously, there are more important things to spend time thinking about.

I'm so sorry, dear. Do you think there will be any resolution soon? How long without you paying does it take for the bank to foreclose? (I rent, I don't know about such things). Do you have food? Is there anyone else in your house that works?

Thanks, Amber. You're right - I am finding it really hard to think of much else these days. Also because, once we do go back to work (whenever that might be), we don't really know what it will be. Management is inside right now making God knows what changes. It could be a whole different ball game. Anyway, no way of knowing when it might be resolved. I have set end of September as my time to start seriously looking elsewhere. I don't want to leave, but I can't hold on forever. I am the sole breadwinner - right now, and since this all began, I'm spending on only the bare essentials (ie. cheap groceries!) and the rest of my money and savings is going to my mortgage, condo fees, taxes, etc. And it's starting to dwindle. it's not a nice place to be, and I'm starting to feel more than a little stressed.
I hope things work out for you, too. These kinds of situations really put a lot in persepective, don't they? Good luck...

I'm not annoyed, just confused: 1) You couldn't find the N's in the rock section without asking the kid behind the counter? 2) What on earth did you need in the Stevie section anyway? Don't you own all of her albums? The last time I went anywhere near the Stevie Nicks CDs in a music store was the day TISL came out.
That said, I would have been incredibly annoyed at the nose-ring kid, too, not because he didn't know who Stevie is, but because it seems like he gave you such grief and was so put out, all because HE was the ignorant one. There are so many thousands of musicians in the world releasing CDs, it amazes me that somebody working in a record store would be at all surprised to have a customer ask them about someone they've never heard of.

Fleetwood Mac related things that annoy me:
When people claiming to be fans misspell their names.
When people who write album reviews misspell their names.
When people assume Lindsey is a woman (though I suppose I should forgive them that one, since I assumed LB was a woman when I first read the name).
When fans assume every LB song is about SN and vice versa.
When fans talk s*** about Lindsey's wife.
When Ledgies use acronyms in place of song/album titles. Half the time I never do figure out what the heck they're talking about. (I'm guilty of doing it too from time to time, but I usually make an effort not to.)
When Ebay sellers describe Walter Egan as an "ex-Fleetwood Mac guitarist/singer"
That's all for now.

But should have been and actually was are two totally different things and I'm a stickler for accuracy in these sorts of things.

I wouldn't go as far as saying that he'd be "a MORE logical replacement". I mean, Billy had his connections with Mick via the Zoo and had worked co-writing tunes with both Stevie & Christine. Rick had played with John McVie in the late 70's/early 80's incarnation of John Mayall's Bluesbreakers...and with Russ Kunkel & Bob Glaub (Stevie's first solo rhythm section) in Jackson Browne's band...so, both Billy & Rick had already established FMac connections.
But, Walter would've definitely BEEN a logical replacement, that's for sure. As Todd Sharp would have, too.
Miss Vicky

I wouldn't go as far as saying that he'd be "a MORE logical replacement".
We'll have to agree to disagree here, because I still believe Walter would have been a more logical choice. Not only did he already have very strong connections to the band - stronger connections, IMO, than either Rick or Billy - but he also draws from the same musical influences that shaped Lindsey's style.

... stronger connections, IMO, than either Rick or Billy - but he also draws from the same musical influences that shaped Lindsey's style.
I'd say, at best, EQUALLY strong connections...on paper...but hadn't those faded by 1987? Billy & Rick's connections, IN 1987, were more current...they were "closer" to the band AT THAT POINT IN TIME. (the "what have you done for me lately" thing) Had Lindsey left in 1981, instead of 1987, I'd be right there with you, full-on, regarding Walter having the stronger connections.
SteveMacD
09-16-2005, 07:01 PM
For me, Billy Burnette and Todd Sharp would have been the logical choices in 1987, but maybe they felt that would have been too close to the Zoo and Christine's solo career. Rick was a bit of a shocker, but I love that he brought some of the old Green songs back into the set.

No. Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac, the girl lead singer that sings Dreams.Come on people, she's been around for 30 years now. Duh,Wake up and smell the coffee. The sigs sometimes are long, but some people are artistic on them. fancy spelling of words on here and other boards sometimes drive me nuts, cursing I can't complain about it, because I do it.also Stevie does it too.

I'd say, at best, EQUALLY strong connections...on paper...but hadn't those faded by 1987?
The last collaborations that I'm aware of between Walter and members of Fleetwood Mac occurred in 1985, on an album that eventually became 2000's Mad Dog/The Lost Album. Both Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie contributed to those recordings.
But like I said, we'll agree to disagree as to who the most logical replacement would have been, and agree that either way, Walter should have been in the band.
A little quote from the man of steel himself (from his Q and A sessions here on the Penguin):
"I do feel somewhat like a member of Fleetwood Mac, at least I did at that time. And, in fact, I've always regretted that they didn't ask me to be Lindsey's replacement. Whadaryagonnado?"
David

For me, Billy Burnette and Todd Sharp would have been the logical choices in 1987, but maybe they felt that would have been too close to the Zoo and Christine's solo career.Depends on who "they" is. The other members of Fleetwood Mac probably would have welcomed Burnette or Sharp into the fold (obviously, they did welcome Burnette into the fold), but I can promise you that the label execs would have been none too keen on them. The Zoo hadn't exactly been a commercial windfall. The execs wanted a superstar to join a superstar band: someone like Richard Marx
Personally, I'd have wanted John Mellencamp, who had just released his two best albums -- on which he showed significant achievement as a songwriter. "Lonesome Jubilee," in fact, was one of the best mainstream albums in the songwriter tradition of 1987. There's more art in a single stanza of "The Real Life" than in all the songs on "Behind the Mask" put together.

Depends on who "they" is.
The band. I think it was either Billy or Todd, but not both because of the Zoo/Christine solo thing.
but I can promise you that the label execs would have been none too keen on them. The Zoo hadn't exactly been a commercial windfall. The execs wanted a superstar to join a superstar band: someone like Richard Marx
Well, to play Devil's advocate here, Billy WAS nominated for a big country award in 1987, and had an impressive list of people who had recorded his songs. As for Rick, I honestly don't think the band was expecting him to be a singer/songwriter. In any event, I'm so glad they didn't go with a Richard Marx.
Personally, I'd have wanted John Mellencamp, who had just released his two best albums -- on which he showed significant achievement as a songwriter.
The problem is that somebody like John Mellencamp's own fame could easily overshadow the band.
My choice for a replacement would have been Roger McGuinn. He has a name, is a brilliant guitarist, a great singer/songwriter, a great interpreter of other's music, a great arranger, has a great sense of harmony, and is a natural band leader, which is exactly what the band needed after Lindsey. He was a pioneer in folk-rock AND country-rock and was a major innovator of music technology, which would have made him a natural for that version of Fleetwood Mac. Sure, he wasn't a big hit king anymore, but then it's not like Lindsey (if we're being honest) was ever the big hit maker in Fleetwood Mac.
David

You're just showing off your encyclopedic knowledge of music factoids & then trying to twist that into a pertinent counter-argument. Billy was not a superstar on the pop or rock -- or even the country -- scene. He was not a household name. He was not a powerhouse commercial force. The execs wanted superstar status joined with other superstar status. Rupert Holmes has had an "impressive list of people who had recorded his songs," too -- that doesn't ipso facto make him a superstar.
The problem is that somebody like John Mellencamp's own fame could easily overshadow the band.Pishposh. "Overshadow"? What does that even mean, in concrete terms? Drop the abstractions. It would have been a wonderful conjoining of two powerhouse acts, each of which had more than a little in common musically with the other.
My choice for a replacement would have been Roger McGuinn. He has a name, is a brilliant guitarist, a great singer/songwriter, a great interpreter of other's music, a great arranger, has a great sense of harmony, and is a natural band leader, which is exactly what the band needed after Lindsey.McGuinn would have been a very interesting choice, indeed. And sure enough, years later, Stevie Nicks appeared at a Roger McGuinn club concert in Los Angeles & sang "Mr. Tambourine Man" with him.

My point was that Billy was getting the attention of industry insiders, so it's not like he was a nobody who just happened to be hanging out with various members of Fleetwood Mac. I never said he was a superstar, just that he wasn't a complete unknown.
Pishposh. "Overshadow"? What does that even mean, in concrete terms? Drop the abstractions.
You KNOW what I'm talking about. JCM was as big a hit machine in the '80s as the Mac were in the '70s, which means that his big hits were much more recent and relevant than the Mac hits. More people would be interested in just seeing JCM than seeing Fleetwood Mac. And, really, don't we already have enough of that with the Stevie factor as it is? Plus, when a career is THAT big, I don't see the potential new guy being a team player, especially as JCM is one of those guys who has a thing about female musicians (the only two he likes are Joni and Rickie Lee). Given everything that the band went through with Lindsey, they weren't necessarily interested in dealing with another big ego. JCM is a megastar. If you think they could have gotten JCM in 1987, why not go for Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, George Harrison, or Elton John? It's not realistic to expect somebody who is THAT huge on their own to give up total control, and significant profits, of what they're doing to join Fleetwood Mac.
It would have been a wonderful conjoining of two powerhouse acts, each of which had more than a little in common musically with the other.
Not if it meant that the new guy was bigger than the band. It's not like when Sammy joined Van Halen. Van Halen had a lot of hits. Sammy only had a few at best. Yeah, he was a name, but it certainly wasn't bigger than the band he was joining.

My point was that Billy was getting the attention of industry insiders, so it's not like he was a nobody who just happened to be hanging out with various members of Fleetwood Mac.But I never said he was a nobody. That wasn't even at issue. Nobody brought that up. You created a straw man argument. I said he wasn't a commercial powerhouse & that therefore his joining Fleetwood Mac was not what the suits wanted.
You KNOW what I'm talking about. JCM was as big a hit machine in the '80s as the Mac were in the '70s, which means that his big hits were much more recent and relevant than the Mac hits. More people would be interested in just seeing JCM than seeing Fleetwood Mac.I don't know whether that would have been the case in 1987: "Cherry Bomb" & "Little Lies" were being hummed & whistled all over the country. Both acts were huge draws in 1987 (I saw both their shows in 1987, too) -- decidedly more than Richard Marx but decidedly less than U2. But they both occupied superstar "space."
And, really, don't we already have enough of that with the Stevie factor as it is?You & I certainly do -- & a few others. But you could just as easily argue that adding another superstar to the band would have counterbalanced Stevie's overwhelming individual popularity in those days.
Plus, when a career is THAT big, I don't see the potential new guy being a team player, especially as JCM is one of those guys who has a thing about female musicians (the only two he likes are Joni and Rickie Lee).Well, then he has rather narrow -- but excellent -- taste in female musicians. In addition, I don't think the "team player" aspect is anything to worry about: if you hire a guy & he fits in & behaves himself, great. If he acts like an ogre, get rid of him (or wait until he himself leaves). You don't need team players in order to make excellent albums; Fleetwood Mac has proved that numerous times in its history. You don't even necessarily need team players to perform great concerts.
Given everything that the band went through with Lindsey, they weren't necessarily interested in dealing with another big ego.Possibly, but I don't know for sure just what they wanted or didn't want at that point. Besides, they were all still dealing with big egos: four-fifths of Fleetwood Mac were still in the band, & 50 percent of that number were big egos.
If you think they could have gotten JCM in 1987, why not go for Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, George Harrison, or Elton John? It's not realistic to expect somebody who is THAT huge on their own to give up total control, and significant profits, of what they're doing to join Fleetwood Mac.It's not totally realistic, but you with your sociological approach just can't quite get into the aesthetics of anything, can you? I was talking about what sort of MUSIC the band would make with John Mellencamp in it in 1987. Most of the ideas we all have -- you included -- pertaining to Fleetwood Mac aren't all that realistic (how about the 40th anniversary idea of twenty ex-FM members all standing on a stage jamming happily, anyone?).

The reason I brought that into the argument is that I'm sure there were a few suits who thought it was a good idea. Billy appeared to be on the up swing in 1987. Superstar? No, but his popularity was certainly gaining in certain circles outside of Fleetwood Mac. With the exceptions of Mick, John, Peter, Christine, and Dave Mason, Fleetwood Mac has usually augmented their band with people who were relatively unknown, but had, in their eyes, a lot of potential and who they got along with.
I don't know whether that would have been the case in 1987: "Cherry Bomb" & "Little Lies" were being hummed & whistled all over the country. Both acts were huge draws in 1987 (I saw both their shows in 1987, too) -- decidedly more than Richard Marx but decidedly less than U2. But they both occupied superstar "space."
I know. "Tango" is where it started for me. My point is that while the Mac had some new hits, they were still seen as a band who peaked in a different era. They were still able to make a hit record, and were all over MTV and VH-1, but were still of a different era. JCM was really at his peak. That was really his era. At different times, yeah, I could see it working. Just not in 1987.
You & I certainly do -- & a few others. But you could just as easily argue that adding another superstar to the band would have counterbalanced Stevie's overwhelming individual popularity in those days.
Or, it could create a civil war in the group that would have done much more damage than what DID happen.
Well, then he has rather narrow -- but excellent -- taste in female musicians. In addition, I don't think the "team player" aspect is anything to worry about: if you hire a guy & he fits in & behaves himself, great. I genearal, that is true. With Fleetwood Mac, a band that prides itself on being a band with a lot of chemistry and where the sum is greater than the parts, a team player is exactly what they needed.
Possibly, but I don't know for sure just what they wanted or didn't want at that point. Besides, they were all still dealing with big egos: four-fifths of Fleetwood Mac were still in the band, & 50 percent of that number were big egos.
They did, but their egos didn't involved their relationships with others in the band. They felt, on some level, that they had control over their lives. I don't think the same was true of Lindsey.
It's not totally realistic, but you with your sociological approach just can't quite get into the aesthetics of anything, can you? I was talking about what sort of MUSIC the band would make with John Mellencamp in it in 1987. Most of the ideas we all have -- you included -- pertaining to Fleetwood Mac aren't all that realistic
It would have been interesting, I don't disagree. What I'm saying has nothing to do with a sociological perspective. I just can't imagine somebody who's THAT big a mega star joining Fleetwood Mac. Thinking about the contract discussions alone make my head spin. In 1987, Mick needed money. Now, that tour was a financial success. I don't see where that tour would have made MORE money with JCM. So, if JCM were in the band, Mick theoretically would have made less money, as JCM would have gotten a bigger cut of the profits. That isn't sociological, that's looking at the bottom line from Mick's perspective. There's the asthetic factor, but if it cuts into the profits, we already know that we can forget about it.
(how about the 40th anniversary idea of twenty ex-FM members all standing on a stage jamming happily, anyone?).
I'm not the only one who wants to see the big jam. Mick Fleetwood and Bob Welch both have expressed interest. I don't want to have a reunion with EVERYBODY, just the more significant members. Whether or not it happens is anybody's guess, but that Mick and John have recorded with Peter Green and Jeremy Spencer in the last few years (albiet not together) and that Bob Welch has expressed an interest at least gives some hope. Hell, I remember when it was totally unrealistic to think that Lindsey and Stevie would return, and the "Rumours" band would do another tour, yet it happened. I remember when it was totally unrealistic to think I'd ever see Peter Green play in concert, yet I have.

I like Billy and Rick, but I don't think either were leaders or visionaries (or not allowed to be if they were), which is fine in most situations. I think the same is true of Stevie and Christine. Peter, Bob, and Lindsey all had musical visions, and they were able to take those visions and give the band direction. Billy and Rick weren't able to do that, and I'm not sure it was by choice. While by all accounts Billy was going to be on the "Tango" tour even if Lindsey had stayed, I think the band was trying to hide the fact that Lindsey was gone as much as possible. As if both having dark, curly hair wasn't enough, they had Billy dress in the same type of clothing as Lindsey AND play a WHITE Gibson Les Paul Custom, a al Lindsey before the Turner. They were trying to keep their image as status quo as possible. Fleetwood Mac set themselves up for failure, because what they really needed was a paradigm shift. So, in that sense, I agree with David. However, I really can't blame either Billy or Rick for how their Fleetwood Mac tenure turned out. I think both have more than redeemed themselves since their Fleetwood Mac days.

You agree with me . . . on what point?
On the point that there was little that was artistically satisfying about the body of work released by the "Mask" band. The band should have done something other than maintain the "Rumours" image.
For me, there were two ways of doing this. The first way, as discussed, would have been to get a contemporary with a name, not too terribly different from the band, but was not so famous as to overpower the group. My two choices would have been Roger McGuinn or, dare I say it, Dave Mason. Either could have come into the situation, rearrange things to suit them a little better, and go on the road. There would have been a buzz, and either would have had the freedom to just be himself.
The other would be to start something altogether new. They could have gotten somebody who had a lot of ideas and the ability to get the band behind those ideas, as well as take the band in a pretty radical new direction. Like Bob did in 1971.
Sadly, they COULD have done it had they just let Billy and Rick be themselves. I was actually hoping that BTM would have had a greater country-blues feel, something along the lines of "Highway 61 Revisited" or "Sticky Fingers."

For me personally , seeing them on the BHTM tour in the 10th row, they stunk. I wanted to beam Lindsey onto that stage! That was in 1990 at Madison Square Garden. Also I couldn't understand why Stevie seemed out of it and unable to connect to the audience. Of course, we all found out it was the Klonopin. Everyone around me in the audience kept commenting on her weight. I didn't care about that, but she was staring into space, that made me worry. My favorite memory that evening was Christine, she was amazing and beautiful, especially on SBird!

But of course by 1997, even the Rumours band wasn't like the Rumours band any more.

In all honesty, the double capitals in the thread title is more annoying than anything! ;) :sorry:What I find annoying is the widespread misuse of "alternate" (as in "alternate take") for "alternative."
It's an alternative take, not an alternate take -- regardless of the ubiquity of the solecism.

Here's a minor annoyance, since that's what this thread is about:
Over in the "FM Musical" thread, there seem to be a lot of people saying, "Well, if they do it right, it could be really good." Well of course it could be good if they do it right, Sherlock. That's the definition of "doing it right." Although I don't think there really is a way to "do it right" when "it" involves combining Fleetwood Mac and Broadway.
