Wildflower Amazon Review.
Since her 1993 debut Tuesday Night Music Club, Sheryl Crow has been churning out unassailably appealing CDs in an unassailably appealing voice. Which means, according to the rules of the pop music cosmos, by album six it's about time for a misstep. Natural law, fortunately, will have to keep checking its watch. Wildflower moves Sheryl Crow one step closer to Hall of Fame status as she shunts the established rock star's impulse to get all experimental and sprawls, rambling-rose like, across the substance-spiked pop landscape she helped pioneer. Three ingredients, glistening vocals, flawless production and catchy songs rub up against one another in all the right places. These ingredients will cause you to hold your breath on the beautiful piano ballad "Always on Your Side." They pop up again on the George Harrison-esque "Where Has All the Love Gone" reminding you that Crow can reflect and reveal as convincingly as she can rock. If there is a ripple that runs through Wildflower, it's a pensive one. On the spacy "Chances Are," she sings of being "lost inside a daydream." The measure of her talent, ripe and reappraisal-resistant, is her ability to consistently bring us inside the bubble with her. --Tammy La Gorce

Her misstep was C'mon C'mon, but that's neither here nor there. Can't wait to hear the new album if it's as good as this reviewer makes it sound!

I could care less about reviews and critics - even had it been completely panned I'd run out and buy it!

Misstep indeed. I'm looking forward to hearing the new album and hope the songs have more substance than C'mon C'mon.

I always thought if all of C'mon C'mon had been in the same vein as "Weather Channel," it would have been fantastic. But the majority of it is one overproduced, bloated mess of an album.

Actually I think Tuesday Night Music Club is even more uneven but the high points on that one elevate it above C'mon C'mon.

Hmmm. I've gotten most of the songs off of LimeWire to see how good it is and it sounds...pretty bad. :distress:
I'm sure I'll end up buying it the week it comes out, anyway, but every song sounds the same. The majority of them are bland, midtempo productions, no rockers (with the exception of "Live It Up"), and they suffer greatly from not containing any of her quirky lyrics. There's no "There Goes the Neighborhood" or "A Change" or "You're An Original" or "If It Makes You Happy" in terms of lyrics. They don't sound like Sheryl Crow songs; the hooks are faint, nothing stands out for the most part, guitar riffs are recycled from song to song (the shameless pilfering from Bowie on "Good Is Good" makes me cringe), and she sings as if she's bored without injecting any emotion into the songs. I really wanted to love this album, too.

I bought Bonnie Raitt's new one, btw. Really like it. Initially, I didn't think it was quite as good as Silver Lining, but...I dunno. I think it's pretty good. They're certainly very similar.

I have heard 3 tracks, courtesy of a charming friend :xoxo: , and it sounds pretty damned weak and wimpy so far. And I am a Sheryl die hard.

I bought it Tuesday and I'm torn. Half of the songs are FANTASTIC, the other half are stupefyingly awful. "Crooked Crown" has to be the worst song she's ever recorded.

Worse than that Bryan Adams song? :D
I thought a couple of them sounded dishearteningly similar to ones on Silver Lining, but I didn't think any of them were awful. I actually like Crooked Crown a lot. Guess there's no accounting for taste. :)
[EDIT]: Trinkets grates on my nerves a little bit.

Yes, worse than the Adams song. I find "Crooked Crown" unlistenable; it's an absolute mess. Those processed vocals, the self-conscious funk, the trite lyrics, etc. Not to mention that it sticks out like a sore thumb.

Sparks hit the nail on the head when he called it wimpy. It's an insufferable mess. Love, love, and love; nothing but cheesy love songs with no character or flavor. I'm a big Sheryl fan and even her weakest album (C'mon C'mon) was incredibly enjoyable, but this one is simply not good, imo.

Yeah, but I didn't take that as an "AC cheese with no personality and **** production" album. If people are wondering why something as mediocre as "Good Is Good" was picked as the single, it's because it represents 99% of the album very well. Except the actual album is much slower and filled to the brim with ballads.

AC is a good market...great songs! haha...but I understand what you are saying, however I can't draw an opinion on this album yet, because I haven't heard any of it. I do know that I enjoy "Good is Good"...

How disappointing. :( I like Sheryl but I don't really like the "Good is Good" song and if the rest of the album is like that I probably won't like it either. "Good is Good" is just way to bland for me.

Well like I pointed out in another Sheryl thread I think she maybe she needs some strife in her life to write really great songs ie substance abuse.untreated depression.suicidal ex friends etc.So maybe now that she is more complacent the music is less exciting and interesting .I still enjoy Good is Good in spite of the' All the Young Dudes' ripoff .To an extent Sheryl's mo. has always been raiding 70s classic rock anyway. A well crafted album by Ms.Crow is still preferable to alot of what is churned out these days .So I'll wait and see.

Now that I've had this CD for a few days and had time to really listen to it I really enjoy it.I'm not so huge of a Sheryl Crow fan that I'm going to call a piece of SH*T a birthday cake either. This album works as a whole and takes repeated listens to sink in so I would have to say to those that obtained random tracks online and listened to them out of context to give the whole album a try .It is much more cohesive than either Tuesday Night Music Club or C'mon C'mon and while there are no fantastic singles that jump out at you it has a nice flow .Sheryl herself has said that she 'wrote the album for 'the huge population of people who are my age,who are asking the same questions 'Being a few months younger than Sheryl that may be why it actually resonates with me ,but then alot of her work does .I don't expect every album to be as brilliant as her epoynmous second album and Wildflower is not,but it does reveal it's pleasures over time.
