Okay, when I first heard it, I was like "Wow, this is different.", but I've listened to it about 3 times (fixin' to be my 4th in a sec) and it's phenomenal. There is a grit in his voice, he's whisper-singing ala She Smiled Sweetly. The guitar work is greatness, especially at 37:27-29, I love that. Love the lyrics too. The country influence is over-freakin-whelming.

I can see why people wouldn't like it, but the man continues to blow my mind. :)

ETA: You know what I REALLY love about this? It's not perfect. Mr. Perfection is not on key towards the end, but dammit, that's the beauty of it. Gah, I love the part towards the VERY end...minute 41:48-42:00

This song is so beautiful.

Such an 'American' sound, too. Like he has come full circle, heading back fullblown to his bluegrass roots.

I can't even hear the 'off-key- part mentioned by Christy.

I love how it sounds like he's playing and singing live in your own room! A deceptively raw sound... makes me wonder if it in fact was recorded on single takes, or it just seems that way.

Hm. Still not too wild about his singing, but I like the guitarplaying. A lot! Love it :)
Though.. full, loud singing wouldn't go right with the guitarpart. I can see why he did it this way.

Here's an mp3 of the song via YouSendIt. It's big, by the way, 12 mb.

(Don't know if this works the same way but at least it was a much faster upload)

well, a lot of you may have second thoughts about it, but for me it's simple.
I cried.
I LOVE it, because it hits me like a truck. Because of the imperfection, the totally unreal but straight recorded vocals that creep under my skin immediately AND heaven sent melodylines, esp. in the vocals.

Shut us Down is "officially" fantastic. The solo is amazing you could get dizzy just listening to it. How does he do it.

I didnt want to post a comment until i listened to it a few times cuz i wasnt sure. But its bloody brilliant. More of that please.

Song of the moment though is Twist of fate. Lovin it loads. I hope it is oficially released do i can get a copy.

Guitar work is beautiful. His voice is fairly crapola.

I am disappointed...he better release his solo album soon and it better deliver. Between the lackluster Soundstage and this song, I'm starting to get a little angry.

The Tom Petty song on the soundtrack, however, is great.

Well, I have a DSL-Less connection so what I hear is all chopped up and it makes it very had to give a fair critique of the song. I feel like primitive woman with my snowy Soundstage reception and choppy 'Shut Us Down" connection.
Anyway, from I can hear I love the guitar! The vocals I think do match the song but it does sound like he has a sore throat or something.

I like it. I don't love it. That vocal is pretty f*cking cloying, I am not a fan of this whispery/whiney voice. I half expected him to whine "But I want it now, mommy!" at any moment. When he sang "As looooooong as I can" after the three minute mark, I laughed out loud. I think that the vocal is actually pretty cold and too detached from the warmth of the music and his guitar; it's a bit too jarring.

The music is really beautiful to these ears, especially during the last minute or so, and I love the lyrics. Would have worked better as an instrumental, though.

I love it. I prefer the guitar work over the vocals. But you also have to look at how this fits in with everything else on the soundtrack. I think this is perfect song for the movie (from what i've seen of previews). And I'm wondering if he related the movie to his own life. Death of a father, lovers, etc. I am curious what the real inspiration was. Let me also say this, the guitar on this is amazing. I think one of his best.

Well, I love it, I think it's terrific.
I love the breathy vocals myself, and the simple production too. Very atmospheric.
To me it's like Nick Drake meets the Stones, while the guitar break in the middle almost reminds me of something Jimmy Page would do. I imagine it works wonderfully within the movie too.

No, this is really great. Sounds better every time I listen to it.

Well, he is almost slurring in it, which bothers the shiitee out of me

As for the guitar work, it is a variation on a theme and IMO it is not different enough to make it distinct.

I would give it a C, though from what I can make of the lyrics, they are pretty.

I'd give it a B-, nothing more than that, when I would have given it a C upon first listen. It's very sub-par for him. I don't know what possessed him to sing it like he did, I'm sure he could have found another weird way of doing it without being annoying. It's one those songs that embodies mediocrity, but then every once in awhile, there's a burst of genius that teases you about what it could have been. I think the music is ace, no matter how derivative, and think it could have been fantastic if left as an instrumental. The combination of the music with that vocal doesn't work for me.

Joe, now that I think about it, maybe not off-key, but his voice waivers towards the end that it sounds kinda flat to me. He's probably pouring so much emotion into it that he's just wanting a raw vocal. That's my opinion of the vocal. I knew people would hate his vocal, but that's the beauty of the song. That guitar work is frickin' awesome and I would LOVE to have just that instrumental to listen to.

It's kind of like when you were little and you would go into your room with your best friend and the two of you would whisper so quietly. That's what his vocal reminds me of.

Good to know that Lindsey is frustrating some people. LOL That's the point, I think. ;)

It's interesting that you assume that I don't like him. Unlike you, I don't think the has ever made "terrible stuff", maybe music I don't care for. Lindsey has made mainstream stuff like FM-FM, Rumours, Mirage, Tango, Out of the Cradle, and non-mainstream stuff like Tusk, and most all of his solo stuff. To me, this fits into the less mainstream group. :p

That's a funny quote.

I can't say i like the guitarwork apart from the rest. The same for the vocals.
Like I said before, his voice creeps under your skin immediately, and there it can do major damage: You can get itchy and annoyed. Everyone that experience that, I understand. But I just get touched and get warmly sad.

what makes the thing so utterly great is the songwriting itself. The melodylines fighting for room in the song seems what it IS about. It's so vulnerable delivered you have to choose: am I gonna use my Pathetic-shield or am I gonna let him in? If you do the latter he hits you with a bat in the neck: I'm out. Seems you are going to let him in diss. You are going to love this song like you love SMAP. For me this is SMAP part 2. simplicity (of course not in the guitartechnique, but in the melodic lines) and directness.

Rereading what I typed I have to say: I'm not drunk. Just really sentimental about it and searching for words.

Ps: Can anybody try to give a shot on the lyrics? My english is really not good enough.....

Ok, here's my go at the lyrics:

Oh you and I
We sure can dream
Of conversations
That might have been
I know that I
Treat(ed) you unkind
Then long ago
I lost my mind
And even after
All these years
Oh I can even
See you clear
I know that you
Must lie? sometimes
To hide the truth
You try to find
Oh I won’t shut us down
No I will stay around
As long as I can
As long as I can
Even after
All these years
I can even
See you clear
A child was born
Another time
And every life?
Has it’s price
No I won’t shut us down
No I will stay around
As long as I can
As long as I can
No I won’t shut us down
No I will stay around
As long as I can
As long as I can
As long as I can

I really like it. I get the sense that it really fits the movie, too...from reading about the setting and subject matter it already goes visually with the picture (for me).
I like the vocal - sometimes I wish his voice was lower, but i like the whispery thing.
The guitar playing obviously beautiful - thought it could've used a little more warmth of bassnote, and perhaps a few slight slow downs in tempo on certain occasions.
but - those are picky tiny points - I like it. And it does remind me of driving through beautiful places and thinking about the past.

"As usual, Crowe brings his passion for pop music to the forefront, breathing new lyrical life to classic rock and obscure B sides. I LOVE what he did to Lindsay Buckingham's acoustic version of Fleetwood Mac's BIG LOVE."

Is it possible acoustic Big Love is part of the soundtrack, too, or is the viewer confused?

Also, about the lyrics. Is it just remotely possible Lindsey wrote this song to go with the plot of the movie?

wow - I love this track. Shut Us Down is easily the best thing Lindsey Buckingham has recorded in years. I love how punk and low-fi it is, how fantastically un-Fleetwood Mac the sound is. I hope he continues to release recordings like this. It's so raw and perfect. It also sounds like he spent some time with Springsteen's "Devils and Dust" album.

I see why some people don't "get it", but for people who "got" Tusk right away, you're going to love this song.
This is not your mother's Fleetwood Mac. This is current Lindsey Buckingham and it's got a really interesting combination of gorgeous and un-commercial filtered throughout the finger-picking. Brilliant. He's definitely on to something. Classic rock radio fans should take a pass. Those who are looking for more should be pretty happy and surprised.

Imagine a whole album like this...

Holy CRAP!!! I love this!!

The guitar playing is beautiful (duh - that solo! Gorgeous) and the words are simply perfect. I actually think these are some of his best lyrics. I would love to know if he wrote this for the movie, or if he wrote it about someone else (and if so, I think it's pretty obvious who - and yes, all the anti-shippers feel free to take a shot! I am only saying what I observe). Anyone found the copyright info on it yet? That might give a clue. I don't know how to look for it.

Someone else said it best... this is old school bluegrass and old americana music... the perfection is in its raw imperfection.....this would be a great live song just him and a guitar..I'll grant you its "weird" compared to what people would normally listen to... but so is most of the Tusk album....and personally I think Tusk is FM's best album to date....certainly the peak of Lindsey's wild creativity within FM...I'm glad to see he is getting back to that level of experimentation again.....I just hope FM does another studio album.. I'd love to see Christine back in studio too... maybe this time they all could rent a house in europe near her house and record it all... could be a fun european vacation for lindsey and family and stevie and gang... :)

I find it hard to believe that Anne could elicit that depth of emotion. Also - it seems the lyrics speak of many, many years, which Anne and Lindsey did not have.
I usually don't think every song is about the Newly Svelt Gypsy. But this one strikes me that it may very well be. I leave room to be wrong, I'm not saying it is about her, but I am saying that the lyrics lead me to believe it very well could be about her. :)

With words like these, Anne Heche would be the *last* person that comes to mind. While it could very well be about someone else than Stevie, be that Carol Anne or Cheri, I think especially the part about still not seeing her clear after all those years (which indicates he is still around the person) could only make this song about the 'stout gypsy'.

Not that it matters one iota ofcourse. ;)

I can't believe you're suprised, those lyrics totally could apply to Stevie. Not saying they do, I'm not a shipper, but they totally could. So don't be suprised, just look at the facts.  For you to discount the possiblity that they are about her shows a lack of logic. (remember, I said possibility) What do you mean you weren't being serious? Can we then infer that you didn't mean what you said???

The song.... hmm.

I don't hate it, and it definitely grows on you with several listens. Still, it's not knocking my socks off either.
It's certainly not a matter of me not "getting" it, and I seem to be one of the few people who thinks that Lindsey's vocal is the highlight of the track. It has that "perfect in its imperfection" quality that I always react to.

But hearing the full length song, I feel it suffers from the same problem as "Say Goodbye"... it works against itself. The instrumentation is too busy to support the vocal, and they sound like they're pulling away from each other. Your ear (well, at least my ear) can only listen to one or the other.

Lindsey's quirky production used to knock my socks off, but this is a style that he can't quite pull off.

Imagine a whole album like this...I am. And I already want my money back. :distress:

It's not like I was being serious, and I'm still quite amazed that people responded by trying to explain how it could be about Stevie and not Mrs. Lafoon. :laugh:Personally, I think it's about Ray Lindsey.

Well, I saw how he looked at Ray Lindsey after the multiple guitar mess ups in Madison - only that was not love - then again, ITS A THIN LINE BETWEEN LOVE AND HATE :wavey: :wavey:

That was of course the concert when during the big mad, LB did push ups for La Nicks and then she kept saying something over and over to him that seemd to calm him - perhaps that incident is what this song is about

Ok, here's my go at the lyrics:

Oh you and I
We sure can dream
Of conversations
That might have been
I know that I
Treat(ed) you unkind
Then long ago
I lost my mind
And even after
All these years
Oh I can even
See you clear
I know that you
Must lie? sometimes
To hide the truth
You try to find
Oh I won’t shut us down
No I will stay around
As long as I can
As long as I can
Even after
All these years
I can even
See you clear
A child was born
Another time
And every life?
Has it’s price
No I won’t shut us down
No I will stay around
As long as I can
As long as I can
No I won’t shut us down
No I will stay around
As long as I can
As long as I can
As long as I can
As long as I can

I finally listened to this today and I thought it was kind of cool. I'm not a big Lindsey fan but this one was different. As for the words, if you are talking about the part in bold being about his kid being born and him still carrying on with Stevie, that would make him the biggest asshole in the world. Not for doing it, but for writing about it or shoving it in his family's face. "F*ck you, wife (can't remember her name) and my three children. Daddy is f*cking aunt Stevie and I want the world to know it so I write about it and stick it in a movie. And you? Were an inconvenience. I want the world to know that too. A child is born and every life has its price!" Good catch, Stevie.. I'm not saying the man isn't cheating but writing about it and slamming it in their faces? No, I think the words were written for the movie. Gawd, for the sake of not thinking he's a total prick, I hope so. Why do peeps think everything written is about those two hooking up? Weird. Very weird. The song is cool tho. I also like Tom's Square One. Good soundtrack period.

Actually......I quite like this song, the guitar work is fab! I even like the words..but... the voice doesn't do for me, I just hope this isn't a sign of things to come and that he gets a good rest/voice coach and gets himself a new vocal range (or fiddle a few knobs on his mixer thingy maybe) when he gets to recording a solo/FM album or whatever he's going to do.

I am still on 3 times, going on 4th now, so I am not quite there yet. I am *loving* the guitar playing and the lyrics (must agree with whoever said this is about Stevie), but the way he sings it... I know it'll grow on me though, so I am going to give it another go.

I didn't have to go from  to :woohoo: but only from  to :] but I'm sure if you give it another five listens you'll get to :) about his singing:D

I think it complements the guitarplaying, really. Shouldn't be loud and powerful with that intricate playing. Also, shouldn't be too complicated compared to the guitarpart.

It's weird how everyone is saying this song is experimental because if anything this song is stripped down, lo-fi, and sounds to me as if it was sung and performed exactly as written.
Whoever said it was influenced by old school bluegrass and Americana was spot on. To my ears that's neither quirky or experimental. As I said before it reminds me a little of 60's folk singer Nick Drake.

I would kill for an entire album like this. You guys can keep the shiny, overproduced pop. I like the raw Lindsey more.

As for the lyrics, I don't care who or what it's about, it just sounds good.

This song does not apply to the movie at all. At least the trailor that I saw. Orlando Bloom loses his job, gets depressed and then gets news his father died. He hops a plane to attend the funeral and meets Claire Danes, who then becomes his love interest. There was no baby that I saw in the trailor. It appeared to me to be sort of a superficial, fluff type film. I cannot imagine that Lindsey would want to even sit through a film like this. He has limited outlets for his songs, with the solo thing not appearing to pan out and FM not recording often. I doubt he would waste this opportunity to get one of his songs out by sitting down and handcrafting a song to fit the film. It might have been something he wrote during that "burst of inspiration" he had during the SYW tour.
I also do not interpret any of the lyrics to be a "fu@@ you" to his family. (his kids) That is not what he meant at all. I interpret that entire verse to mean something completely different. It sounds like it is about Stevie because he is writing about an old relationship where things have occurred over the course of many years. A relationship where mistakes were made and now they are learning from those mistakes and accepting things about the other that in the past would have been impossible. (he is accepting that she has to lie...)

I really like the song, it has grown on me. The whispered vocals are ok, the guitar is amazing and the lyrics are some of his best ever. Certainly a powerful declaration of love and committment.

That's a different trailer to the one I saw then, because it's Kirsten Dunst in the movie.

Given the fact that this movie is directed by Cameron Crowe, the man who wrote the first ever Rolling Stone cover feature on the Mac, who has been acclaimed for movies such as Say Anything, Jerry Maguire and Almost Famous, whose love of music and reputation has meant that many big artists such as Bruce Springsteen and Pearl Jam are willing to sit down and write songs just for his movies, and who has known Lindsey for 30 years, I think Lindsey would be more than willing to sit down and watch this "superficial" and fluffy movie.

Tom Petty wrote a whole soundtrack once for a romantic comedy, why can't Lindsey craft one song?

As for the lyrics, I don't care who or what it's about, it just sounds good.

The experimental part is the syncopic aproach in songwriting. Vocal melodylines and the melody in the pickinglines are drifting from eachother. (the reason Johnny Stew don't like it so much and the reason why I think it's a masterpiece.) Nick Drake was a master at that, too, so I think you're spot on with that comparison. It makes it so undigestible for the listener that wants to be catched by popstructure. The big difference with his work on GOS and SYW is the production that you call lo-fi. The picking sounds so much more warm. I really hear the strings resonate, something I totally missed in Say Goodbye (studio). That picking was syncopic, too but had it's effect mainly in the dazzling pace. Here it has so much more emotion in itself. Then the overly vulnerable and "naked" vocals strike me more then he has ever done. It really is a step further in his development as a songwriter. And he's going my way: To the core of the emotion, raw and direct. Like he did vocally during Never going back again-live and Say Goodbye-live. If he makes an album full of this sort of directness, I'll be the happiest man on earth. H*ll, I'd even pay for Johnny Stews copy.

PS. I repeat: For me this is his Save Me A Place part 2. But 25 years later: I'll always provide a place for me in you. (don't read this sexual please I'm dutch and searching for words ;) ) His singing is so strong imo, because it reminds me of the way you try to sing for a child that's almost asleep: whispering doesn't work, you'll have to give SOME voice to keep melody. So is the guitarwork: it goes round like a small tin musicbox.

A child was born
Another time

Why are so many people saying "another time"? I clearly hear "another dies" as someone else did earlier. It is a common poetic device to express the passage of time through the cycle of life and death. The addition of "every life has its price" is far more intriguing. I'm still giving some thought to the interpretation I will put on my site, and I love that this song does make you think. Yay Lindsey!

how does someone get their song on a soundtrack anyway? Are they invited to send one in by the director/producer? I also, find it hard imagining that Lindsey would just toss in any old song without the words relating to the movie which makes me wonder, why on earth would he give a song, that everyone thinks could be about a relationship with Stevie (granted it could be,or not be, but if it's not to do with the movie) it seems like an odd choice of words.Guess we'll have to see where it fits in the film.

I'd be willing to bet that Cameron Crowe and Nancy Wilson solicited Lindsey to contribute and Lindsey wrote something to fit the movie. Cameron Crowe is known to be a big Mac fan, the "Bootleg Cut" DVD of Almost Famous even has the original article he wrote about the band on it as a special feature.

Well, I have had time to digest this song. The verdict is that I really love it. I think that I like it, because it is different. I like the "wispy" singing, and the beautiful guitar work that seems to surround it. It is hard to put into words, but to me it is almost like a work of art---a painting to music. It is like the words are the brush, the guitar is the paint, and the melody is the canvas. I think it take more than one listen to really get it. That is why I have waited to throw in my two cents worth.

This is utterly amazing! god I love every ragged note! I understand that emotional, vulnerable Lindsey is hard for some to take, but I willingly invite him under my skin to feel the depth of the emotion he is conveying. Maybe that doesn't mean much, since I am one of the very few that LOVES what he did with HCTS in the tribute to George Harrison.

And didn't we learn that although the changes he made in Trying for the sun were slight, they were signifigant indeed. I'd be willing to bet the same holds true with the lyrics to this song....though the lyrics are nearly insignifigant to me. I think Lindsey is always working on more than one 'level' he creates a song. We all know he can belt out a tune loud and forcefully if he wants to....depending on the emotion he wants to express. I love that he is brave enough to be vulnerable with his vocals. This song literally pierces me with emotion...almost from the inside out. I.love.it.

So do I Kelly. We must be twins. Your words are mine here.

This song literally pierces me with emotion...almost from the inside out. I.love.it.

I felt just the same when I read your posts. Broken English or no...I knew just what you were saying. I 'feel' it the same way you do!

Kelly :)

PS: Just teasing about the broken English. You wrote very descriptively....and accurately!

I love my broken english. It makes me laugh....

and I look at it this way:
writing english is like painting, writing dutch is better descibed as making movies.

Of what I could decipher, the lyrics seem really emotional/heartfelt- which isn't an odd thing for Lindsey, but there seems to be more lyrics than usual...well, actually, the SYW album could probably be called his "lyrical" album, yes? It has quite gorgeous (and some quite verbose) words from the man that aren't very commonly found within his repertoire (i.e. "Law and Order", "Go Insane," etc.)

But whatever way he does his music, he still kicks major ass. Amazing artist, and I become more obsessed with him with each passing day.
