Yes, it would! I wonder if Joss will wear a Stevie-ish outfit? No doubt, she will be barefoot, however....keep your eyes open for Stevie outfits on mannequins, like they did last year.

She wore a black sequined baby doll dress, quite low-cut. Kinda boho, kinda Beyonce.

Oh I dunno. I just saw the picture in the evening papers. It didn't mention the duet was a cover. I don't like either of them though, esp Rob Thomas, so I just know I'm not gonna like it.

Yes, technically accurate. But he did give the song to Stevie and she made it a huge hit and is more known for the song regardless of the songwriter.

I like Tom's version too, but it sounds so much better as a duet.

I guess it depends on how you define cover. If you define it as a remake, then it's fair to say they're covering Stevie. If you define it by songwriter, then you could say they're covering Petty. But I'm not sure if Petty ever recorded the song beyond a demo (e.g. Playback box set) or ever performed the song on his own in concert (Petty fans, correct me if I'm wrong).

If the classic song "Heartbreak Hotel" were covered by someone today, it might be referred to as an Elvis Presley cover, even though Elvis didn't write the song. So it depends on what you mean by a cover.

Livia

Perhaps it should be referred to as a cover of Tom AND Stevie, since HE wrote it, and they BOTH sang it?

Bowie, Keys Dress Up
Musicians take Radio City for Fashion Rocks benefit

For proof that music and fashion are inextricably linked, look no further than David Bowie, just one of the artists featured on Fashion Rocks, the extravaganza that helped to kick off New York's fall Fashion Week, set for broadcast Friday night on CBS. Taped live on Thursday at Radio City Music Hall, the concert found the always-trendy rocker sharing a bill with other stylish artists, such as Gwen Stefani, Duran Duran, Alicia Keys, Destiny's Child, Tim McGraw, Shakira, Nelly, Billy Idol and the Arcade Fire.
"Right now, I'm here as a fan," Alicia Keys told the crowd while introducing Bowie, whose career has been defined as much by his evolving appearance as his sound. "He's an artist who towers above the rest . . . constantly changing his looks," she said, before a dapper Bowie, clad in a blue suit, performed an eerie rendition of his classic "Life on Mars," backed only by an accompanist on a grand piano.

Bowie's performance was serious with good reason. In addition to spotlighting celebrity fashion, the event joins other televised efforts in fundraising for Hurricane Katrina relief: All proceeds from the evening were donated to the cause, and presenters and performers frequently appealed to the audience for support.

The evening began by immediately acknowledging the Gulf Coast disaster in a show-opening performance by a black-clad Tim McGraw. The country star sang "My Old Friend" as images of New Orleans darted by on screens flanking the stage. "We'll meet again, my old friend," McGraw crooned, and the song transformed into a tribute, capturing the spirit of a battered city, while maintaining a glimmer of optimism. Similarly, in her performance later that night, Keys moved with her new single "Unbreakable," which was ornamented with saxophone and Keys' own jazzy organ-playing.

There was still room for a celebratory spirit, however, as an early performance by Destiny's Child proved. In perhaps their last televised appearance as a group, Beyonce, Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams made a glamorous entrance, parading through the facade of a store that read "House of Dereon," Beyonce's new clothing line. The trio then vamped through a pumped-up medley of hits, including "Independent Women," "Say My Name," "Survivor" and "Lose My Breath."

Gwen Stefani -- whose own line, LAMB, has shown staying power -- delivered her single "Cool" on a spare stage early in the evening. The stylish blonde was decked out in a sequined, cream-colored dress. Rapper Nelly, another fashion entrepreneur, performed with Pharrell Williams on "Play It Off," with its nightclub theme and fleet of backup dancers.

More collaborations studded the evening, as Rob Thomas and Joss Stone reprised the roles of Tom Petty and Stevie Nicks for a duet on "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around," with Stone preening and growling as she sidled up to Thomas. And later on, in a show highlight, Bowie returned to the stage with the Arcade Fire. The Montreal indie rockers offered a folky reading of Bowie's "Five Years" with Bowie on lead vocals, followed by a simmering rendition of their own "Wake Up" with Bowie and Arcade Fire frontman Win Butler harmonizing. The song ended in a twinkling coda, complete with accordion, that roused the crowd to its feet.

Fashion grabbed the spotlight again when New Wave clotheshorses Duran Duran took the stage: During a revved-up version of their classic "Girls on Film," Simon LeBon and company were joined by models offering glimpses of designers' new fall collections. It was a moment as rock & roll as any fashion show could be.

Gwen, Beyoncé shine as Fashion Rocks

Samantha Critchell
Associated Press

Friday, September 09, 2005

NEW YORK -- When fashion rocks, singers-turned-designers Gwen Stefani and Beyoncé pull out all the stops.

Stefani put on a slinky silver dress worthy of a screen siren at Thursday night's Fashion Rocks concert that kicked off New York Fashion Week, and Beyoncé -- along with her fellow members of Destiny's Child -- wore shimmery babydoll dresses.

The concert, to be shown Friday night on the U.S. network CBS, brought together some of music's biggest and most fashionable stars to celebrate the link between style and song.

Richard Beckman, the show's producer and president of The Conde Nast Media Group, which publishes Vogue and GQ, said "music defines the epochs of fashion over the years."

"Music stars have always been fashion icons. Think of The Beatles coming off the plane, the mods of 'the new romantics,' Madonna, David Bowie."

Thursday night, Bowie looked like a billboard for sleek chicness -- until you looked down: His seemingly perfect suit had pants that only reached his ankles. His stunning wife Iman made up for that faux-pas in a clingy, skin-coloured gown decorated with crystals.

"Music influences fashion and vice versa," said Tina Chai, the show's stylist. "You have to strike the right balance of both sex and sophistication."

Bowie wasn't the only '80s rocker there Thursday.

"Style has always been very important to us," said Duran Duran's Nick Rhodes backstage before the show. "We grew up in the '70s. Music was glam rock, punk rock and a very stylish movement."

Recalling Duran Duran's first photo shoot, Rhodes said he and his bandmates went to a college campus in London and asked the edgiest students they could find to come up with the band's wardrobe. "We liked what they came up with at the time, but, yes, they'd be a little dated now."

The band, known for songs like Rio and Hungry Like a Wolf, wore suits when performing Girls on Film with a gaggle of women dressed in clothes designed by Stefani, Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez, Sean (Diddy) Combs and Jay-Z behind them.

The big finale was Billy Idol's White Wedding, and for that number models were dressed in bridal gowns by Roberto Cavalli, John Galliano, Chanel and Vera Wang, among others.

Hanging out in the green room with model wife Marisol, Rob Thomas said he gives some thought to his wardrobe, especially what he wears on stage, but not too much. "I like something with a classic touch. That way, it's easy."

So what did Thomas wear for his duet of Stop Dragging My Heart Around with Joss Stone channelling Stevie Nicks? Jeans and a T-shirt.

I'll definitely be recording this if I go out tonight, mainly to catch SDMHA. I'll be anxious to see if she does our girl justice...

IMO most people don't consider SDMHA to be a Tom Petty song. It was on HER album and the average person would not know he wrote it.

When Bonnie Tyler recorded her album of cover songs a few years ago, every press release and article (from European newspapers -- it wasn't released here in the states), mentioned that Bonnie was covering "Fleetwood Mac's 'Need Your Love So Bad.'"

While I was happy to see FM mentioned, "Need Your Love So Bad" is technically a Little Willie John song.
But songs usually become synonymous with the artist who made them famous, and people recognize them as such.

Wait wait wait, though. Haven't you guys heard the rendition of SDMHA where Tom sings all the parts? Some months ago, they were playing it all over a local station. It kind of sucked, b/c I would get all excited by the opening riffs, only to discover that Stevie was not on it.

The black eye looked fake to me. And his hand was bandaged in the first song, but not the second with ________ (have no idea which band the duet was with).

You'd think he would've learned a lesson after that whole Annie Lennox debaucle at the Freddie Mercury tribute concert. Annie was made up with what she intended to be a "black mask of death". The press all wondered: Why did Annie Lennox show up on stage with racoon eyes???

She has a set of pipes - she just oversings everything, which is the latest "I am white chick trying to be black like Aretha" style. I mean sing the ONE note as written without adding ten to the end of it as if you are doing a vocal warm up with scales. She did this cra**y style of singing with Melissa E. in the Janis covers. It was very apparent who was the vocally superior one in that. I mean I though ME's voice was going to knock Stone to the floor

I will say this - the music sounded great to these ears and I am a total fan of RT and he sounded EONS better than she did - at least he sings the notes as written.

She has a set of pipes - she just oversings everything, which is the latest "I am white chick trying to be black like Aretha" style.

In England, you'll find many white women who are (and have been for a long time) soul singers. They're not following any kind of trend, they just love and appreciate soul and R&B like anyone else.

I loved this version/interpretation/arrangement?? of SDMH.....OK it doesn't quite have the same chemistry as Stevie and Tom but it was a great attempt to bring Stevie/Toms (Lets face who can fill Stevie platforms anyhow) music to a younger and different audience by two people who are currently en vogue on the music scene?

I know - but I think this chick is a poser in her antics. I just hate it when singers sing ten notes where one ought to be. Interestingly, that is why I mostly cannot stand Whitney Houston and that ilk - I mean all that hand raising witnessing and a ten minute of note belting to end a song - not for me and IMO an insult to most legit. singers. But - to each their own.

I just heard it. I thought she had a strong voice, but it sounded very weak. It sucked, really. It wasn't different, and it wasn't a good enough vocal to justify doing it the same. Overall, Barf.

I totally agree. Stone needs to tone it down coz she's annoying and a show-off. Melissa is definitely the superior singer and let's face it..Stevie is hard act to follow too and so is Tom Petty. Those were and are true rockers. The watered down new version is a wannabe but nice try. Speaking of Melissa Etheridge, has anybody heard her version of Refugee? KICKS ASS and sounds like it was written for her and her alone. Tom must be proud!

Ok just my 2 cents.... I think they did it justice but it was kind of bland to me. I don't like Rob Thomas but I think he did better than Joss. And lastly, I wish Joss would wear some friggin' shoes. Doesn't she know thats how people catch worms! :distress: Thats all.

So what I gather from yours and another poster opinions is that you prefer covers that are clones of the original instead of being sung in the artist's own style. Rob Thomas basically imitated Tom Petty. Joss did her own thing. Kudos to her.

That's because Rob Thomas suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucks. He's the musical equivalent of a brown envelope; plain, boring, and not very tasty. Joss Stone put her own spin on it, but the young girl has no idea what pitch is and she sings everything as if they may be the very last notes she'll ever sing, so she drags everything out to the point where you're asleep halfway through any random song she's singing. All that squealing drives me batty.

Not at all- you mistakenly inferred that. Again, what I do not like is this twink dragging every note out at the end and her constant raising of her hand as if she is witnessing in some black gospel revival tent at Jazz Fest in New Orleans. To quote my mother - this poser is "too much sugar for a dime" and I, and apparantly others, think and thought her own thing was horrible.

As for Thomas, he was boring, as he usually is, but at least less is usually more.

If people were more interested in learning the facts of what's going on in our country, rather than simply nodding their heads like lobotomized mental patients and agreeing with everything these "in-your-face" talking heads shout about, we wouldn't be in the mess that we're in regarding healthcare, the economy, the environment, civil rights issues, and our new Vietnam War.

You can disagree with her all you like and call her names, but you can't call this woman stupid.

As an undergraduate in Cornell University's College of Arts and Sciences, Ann Coulter helped to launch a conservative newspaper, The Cornell Review, with funding provided by the Institute for Educational Affairs' Collegiate Network. She graduated cum laude from Cornell in 1984, and went on to receive her J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School, where she was an editor of The Michigan Law Review. At law school, Coulter shared an apartment with the human and civil rights advocate Cindy Cohn who is now the Legal Director for the Electronic Frontier Foundation. At Michigan, she founded a local chapter of the Federalist Society. She also received training at the National Journalism Center. After practicing corporate law for four years, she became a congressional aide in Washington, D. C. in 1994, working as a staffer to Republican Senator Spencer Abraham, who served on the Senate Judiciary Committee before working for a public interest law firm.

This is not the background of a "stupid" individual. Yet we have "college drop outs" like Michael Moore who gain just as much, or even more attention!

Once again, you use logic to a fallacy. Not to discount the value of an education, but many many high school drop outs are geniuses - to wit:

Ok that was a pointless post. Yes I realize that you don't have to go to college to be considered smart. Some of the most brilliant individuals who have ever lived never went to school!

Her truth is only by half - she never tells the whole story - Personally, I think you should post that paper you said you wrote. I would love to read it because I think pretty much if her mouth is open, she is lying  But, you will never admit that - though you did admit she has better hair than Stevie's - which is a baby step to the truth :wavey:

I said I was in the process of writing a paper. But I would be glad to post others' responses to Al "I hate everyone" Franken's comments on Ann and her work.

i didn't read alllllll the other pages, and though i would love to join the coultergeist bashing, i simply don't have the time.

SO...

about that rob&joss performance...

i want to brush that girl's hair and strap some sandals on her, allison just wants her to wear pants to cover up her spider legs. i can not stand that girl. and every performance cements that belief a little more... rob did fine, she killed it for me. allison said "mariah carey might as well have been singing that song" and she's very right. she makes everything sound like it's coming from a southern gospel group. and i like southern gospel groups. but not the kind that joss reminds me of. someone somewhere likened her to janis? bwah... janis nevah would have sold her skanky, ringwormy, shoeless soul to the GAP. put on some shoes and STOP COVERING STEVIE NICKS. joss is now a part of the Axis of Evil, her and each of her fugly toes.

:wavey:

I didn't hate it, but it wasn't great. Slightly better than when Joss ruined Melissa Etheridge's cover of Piece of My Heart.

i agree, it was "cute" & joss seemed to be having fun singing it, but she is no stevie, i also have the joss/melissa cry baby/piece of my heart mp3 & i hate the 1st part w/ joss~ the girl does have a great soulful voice, but the long ooooooooowwwwwwwwww & yeahs & whatever you call the other sounds coming out at the end of ea verse & inbetween ea verse is just too much :distress: ~

Amen. I despise that, especially when they do it singing the national anthem.

Did anyone see Rob Thomas on Shelter from the Storm? He did "Time After Time." It wasn't bad. I don't like him, I don't dislike him. I just wish he and Tom Cruise would both get outta the closet already.

I agree Jill! This was the first time I have ever heard her sing and her voice does nothing for me :distress: The extra babbling just made it worse!
