Update as of Sept. 29: Doctors say, after further testing that finds her in worse shape than they thought, that Kristin won't be leaving the hospital for "awhile."
Update as of Sept. 27: Kristin looks good and is in good spirits, but they can't figure out what's wrong with her and they can't figure out what to do about it. All they know is that something is causing her pancreas to have the tear and the cyst, and that it has to heal itself for her to get better. So all they can do is feed her through an IV, deny her "real" food to let the pancreas "rest" for as long as it takes and give her pain medication. Of course they are giving her every test they can to determine the problem but so far, no luck. Hopefully they will be able to find something, because if they can't figure out what caused the problem, it will be hard to rule out a relapse.
Because there is really nothing much they can do and because the insurance companies are getting impatient, they are sending her and her IV and her pain medication elsewhere. A family has volunteered to let her live in their basement. She is hoping to continue her studies online and still graduate on time (she's in her last year of law school). She will be essentially bedridden for quite some time.
If anyone would like to do something to help, PM me.
Kristin doesn't post here much, but you might remember her from my reviews if you read them. She's currently in the ICU of the Osborn Hospital in Scottsdale, bleeding from the pancreas. They don't know what caused it - maybe a cyst in her pancreas. A pool of blood has gathered in her pelvis. It's so bad they have called the family to Phoenix. Please pray for her.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts and prayers! I came here to update as soon as I found out more information. Her sister Julie just called me.
Kristin is going to make it! They still don't know what's wrong with her, and they will have to remove her gall bladder, but the bleeding has been stopped. She had to be given two bags of blood, but her blood pressure is stabilized. And it looks like her pancreas is HEALING ITSELF.
You know, lately I have been complaining about the Ledge, but it's time like these that show in the end, it's the caring people that make it worth it.

Update: I'm afraid my earlier post was overly optimistic. They've discovered what's wrong with Kristin and it's pretty bad.
She's got a cyst the size of an orange in her pancreas. If something isn't done about it, she'll die, and the doctors right now aren't sure whether they should operate or not becuse she has infections.

I'm happy to report that the latest is good news.
Kristin still has all the problems we've talked about. However, she is responding well to treatments to stop the infection. Her organs are stable and they're getting a handle on the ecoli. They think that due to her youth (she's 24), unless something else goes wrong, she has a good chance of recovery.
I don't know if I should celebrate yet - she has a long road ahead of her - but things sound a lot better than they did 24 hours ago. A LOT better. I dont really understand medicine and how things can keep changing so fast, but the doctors are hopeful, and we should be too.
Thanks again for all of your concern and prayers - I'll keep you updated.

Just talked to her mom. Kristin continues to improve. For the first time, they let the family come into the ICU room with her (previously they had to stand behind a glass). They no longer think she might need to have part of her heels amputated, which was a concern because her DIC had deprived them of circulation, I believe (not quite sure on that - Curtis?). It will be a couple weeks or so before she can get off an IV and eat again - can you imagine? - but at least she's getting better. They are eager to remove her gall bladder but are holding off a little longer for her to get stronger.

Glad to hear she is improving. :xoxo:
DIC can occur when there is major trauma to the body. Instead of clots forming at the site of injury, small ones form throughout the body. Eventually all the clotting factors are depleated, causing severe bleeding. So, there prolly were clots that deprived her heels of circulation....or she was losing large amounts of blood...and when that happens, the body circulates the blood to the major organs, leaving the parts of the body that doesn't need it as much (arms, feet) without the supply.
Hope that was understandable.

Update: No real change - I did make a mistake earlier. The cyst is inoperable. They are hoping if they keep it dormant by not giving her any food other than the IV, the pancreas will heal itself. The only operation she would undergo is to remove her gall bladder, which will be done as soon as she's strong enough.
Also, I now have an address for cards. I think it would really touch her if we all sent her one. She has so many people praying for her and concerned about her and I'd love her to see that visibly. It can be a card or a quick note, nothing fancy is required. :)

Hi guys,
Another update on Kristin. She has been moved out of ICU into a kind of in-between room for people who are still in very serious condition and need to be monitored closely, but are no longer considered "critical." That's definitely good news! She's talking again, although not much. She's aware enough to ask for morphine when she needs it (although her mom says she hates to ask for it, she'll say "just a little" - she doesn't like to be "doped up").
She still has a fever and the doctors estimate she will not be able to eat real food for AN ENTIRE MONTH more. Of course she's still in a lot of pain, but she is improving.

The latest is that Kristin has been moved into a regular room and can now see visitors briefly. Right now all they can do is keep her on the IV and wait for her pancreas to heal itself, as well as wait for her body to be stable enough to take out the gall bladder. She seems in good spirits, considering. I was able to talk to her briefly on the phone about an hour ago. She was impressed by all the people praying for her and keeping her in their thoughts. In fact, she has already received golden braid's card. Thanks everyone!

I'm afraid her stay right now is indefinite, because they have no idea how long it will take for the pancreas to heal itself. They won't even give her an estimate, just that she shouldn't expect to get off the IV for at least a month. I'm assuming that means she'll be in there at least that long.
Poor thing told me that her hopsital room's TV only gets 5 channels, two of which are in Spanish. She's hoping the school will give her a laptop to use temporarily. They've asked, at least. She's plenty bored!

Aww... bless her heart. I will definately send out a little something for her to do, and a couple of pictures to look at while she's there.
I can't do anything about her stations.....

Does she like puzzles at all? Like word searchs or crosswords or do I dare say Sudoku  Maybe we could send her some of those. Must be pretty boring with crappy TV and no PC.

At this point I'm sure she wouldn't turn down any alternate form of entertainment!

We're all glad she's doing better, even if they'll have her on the IV and everything until her pancreas heals. Right now that's really what it's all about, the gall bladder seems to be an innocent bystander for the time being.

Nichole, what is the deal with the school and the laptop? Can it be supplied?

Update as of Sept. 27: OK, just got back from visiting Kristin. She looks relatively good and is in pretty good spirits. I've been a little confused about stuff in past updates but now I've got it down. In my defense, the doctors are as confused as hell too.
The cyst didn't cause the rupture. They don't know what caused the rupture. They thought it was the gall bladder and wanted to remove it, but now they've discovered it wasn't and they're probably going to leave it in. They thought it was stones but they haven't been able to find any. They realize now the cyst was a result of the problem - whatever that problem is, since they can't identify it.
So, at this point, they can't figure out what's wrong with her and they can't figure out what to do about it. All they know is that something is causing her pancreas to have the tear and the cyst, and that it has to heal itself for her to get better. So all they can do is feed her through an IV, deny her "real" food to let the pancreas "rest" for as long as it takes (they can't tell her how long that will be) and give her pain medication. Of course they are giving her every test they can to determine the problem but so far, no luck. Tomorrow she goes to another hospital to get something stuck inside of her gall bladder to make sure there aren't any tears in the tubing.
If anyone would like to do something to help, PM me.

thanks so much for the update Nancy, glad to hear she's a wee bit better. How damn frustrating tho to have confused docters as well!! Of course it's not their fault but it makes things so difficult to come to terms with, when there's no clear answer, dosn't it. Medical issues are so complicated!!!
All the best to her in the long road ahead, and good luck with the studies.

Update as of Sept. 29: Doctors say, after further testing that finds her in worse shape than they thought, that Kristin won't be leaving the hospital for "awhile." Guess the insurance company will have to suck it up.

I am sorry to hear that Nancy. Poor Kristin. Do they even know what is making her ill or have some kind of clue what it might be?

They know her pancreas isn't working right, but don't know why. :(

I'm sorry, Nancy. :(
Is there a medicine or treatement to work for the pancreas....or is the pancreas actually making her sick? I would imagine this has been a nightmare for everyone. My daughter was hospitalized in March and it took them 3 days to figure out what was wrong with her. I thought that was the longest time of my life. I simply cannot imagine what they have been through.
She's still in my prayers!
Kelly :)

The pancreas is the problem. It infected everything around it. They don't know why it tore and it's too fragile to treat. They can't operate on it or really do anything other than try to find out what caused it to prevent it from happening again, and wait for her pancreas to heal itself and for the cyst to go away by itself.
Oh how sad...Although I do not know Kristin, she is most certainly in my prayers- as well as her family and friends. I am so sorry to hear she is going through this... :(
