Hurricane Katrina - 2005/09/06 08:46
Just wanted to thank everyone out there who has called, e-mailed, written into the website and message board, and approached me to make sure that my family in New Orleans was okay. My wife, Arthel, has been in New Orleans covering the hurricane aftermath for her show, "A Current Affair."
Most of my in-laws were either out of town already (on tour with The Neville Brothers) or evacuated in time. Only three of my wife's cousins were unaccounted for until late last week. Thankfully, now, everyone is safe and out of New Orleans, and the family members are now scattered temporarily across Texas, Tennessee, and Alabama. My wife will continue to report from Louisiana for an as-yet undetermined amount of time.
My uncle-in-law, Aaron Neville, recently performed on the concert for hurricane relief that aired on NBC on Friday, September 2nd. His redition of Amazing Grace can be heard on the airwaves of many news organizations' broadcasts. My father-in-law, Art Neville, will be performing on Friday, September 9th, in Los Angeles at the Staples Center alongside Sheryl Crow for a benefit concert. He will also be performing with the Dave Matthews Band on Monday, September 12th for Dave's benefit concert at Red Rocks Amphitheater (outside of Denver).
I myself will be performing in Los Angeles with my wife's cousin Ivan Neville (keyboardist for The Neville Brothers and Keith Richards' Expensive Winos) on Tuesday, September 13th at The Mint. There is also talk of a performance with Stevie Nicks at Madison Square Garden for a benefit concert on September 20th. Other performers that have been asked (but not confirmed) are Elton John, The Rolling Stones, U2, and Billy Joel.
Lastly, I will be setting up a foundation with my wife to help the hurricane victims. As this is uncharted territory for me, I am not too sure when this will be up, but I have some good friends that work with setting up and consulting non-profit organizations, so hopefully we can get everything up and running fairly quickly.
Again, thanks for all the well-wishes and concern. Although everyone in my family lost their homes and are not quite sure where they are going to live, we are far better off than many others.
---
It would be awesome if Stevie participated in one of the benefit concerts. Very kind of he & Arthel to set up a foundation .

Wow! Thanks for posting this Tiffany. I hope she does do a benefit show, although I wish it would be on the west coast instead. ;)
Taku's message is certainly heart-felt. He seems like such a nice guy. Glad he and his family are alright.

That would be so cool. I remember Arthel mentioning Taku when she was on the Good Day Live Show, he was touring with Mac/Stevie. If this happens I may have to fly up for my Birthday (14th) gift to me :)
Thanks Tiffany!~Barbara

Great news but too bad the show is on the oppisite coast. No chance of seeing her in NY. Why not have the benefit in Los Angeles just because I live here? I'm dying to see our girl again.

Do you think the benefit would be televised since such big name acts are talking about being in it? I would think if it was on TV they would be able to bring in a lot of money from the viewers at home.

Stevie participated in one artists' rights benefit . Here's a list of other causes she has supported with concerts or guest appearances over the last 10 years: Arizona Heart Institute, Breast Cancer Coalition, Yellow Rose Gala (benefits Multiple Sclerosis), City of Hope, Thoreau Insititute, Robin Hood Foundation (targets poverty), KFOG Concert For Kids, A Very Special Christmas (benefits Special Olympics), Live In Central Park w/ Sheryl Crow (pediatric AIDS research), Andre Agassi Foundation (benefits underpriveliged children), VH1 Save The Music, Kids In Camp (benefits children with cancer), Center For Biological Diversity... this is not even an exhaustive list, but those seem pretty worthwhile to me.
On edit -- in addition she has promoted charity to tsunami victims, the One campaign, victims of 9/11, the Red Cross, and U.S. troops & veterans.

What a great cause! I will be going with or without Stevie....I am going to try to coerce Marissa into going with me. (birthday present) New York is an hour and a half from me and any excuse to get up there is a good one.
Thankfully Taku's family is safe.
Thanks for posting the charties, Tiff. Stevie has ALWAYS supported charities from the very beginning. In 1979, she donated all her future royalties from Beautiful Child to Unicef. She might not be a visible as Sean Penn or Celine Dion when doing it, but that just makes her more classy in my mind. (Celine and Sean are classy too......)

Sheesh... how much heartache and tragedy can this woman handle? She just lost her father and now this. I think it was perhaps a bit of an eye-opener- the magnitude of the Katrina tragedy compared to her own personal loss. I love the fact that she is putting on her brave face to do this rather than curling up in a fetal position (which she has every right to do, by the way).
I guess it goes without saying... I'M SO THERE @ MSG!!!!!

Maybe Stevie Nicks getting up on stage and singing "Dig your grave" and "Pick up the pieces and go home" wouldn't be seen as very appropriate. Nor would the likes of these or a song like Rock and Roll be appropriate:
Outside the rain
And the heart skips a beat
So you're lonely
Creature of the night
It's been almost a week
Can you love me only
Look at me, for a very long time
Long enough to know
Love is a word - I've been trying to find
Words don't matter
They don't matter at all
Maybe it's only a dream
I don't want to feel that
Well it's one more link - in the chain
I don't believe that
So you're still lonely
You say that it's been forever
Maybe you never knew me -
Maybe you thought that
I'd never change - but
You know I'm changing
- You're wrong -
And it's been like dying -
No love's that hard to find -
And I'm tired of -
I'm tired of trying
Outside the rain
And the heart skips a beat
So you're lonely
Look in my eyes
Touch my face
Baby, there's no one
That can take my place
Look in my eyes, touch my face
Baby there's no one that
Can ever replace that - heartache
Take away that heartache
And a slew of other lyrics. There's a time and a place for her to put on a rock show that'll bring the house down, but this surely isn't one of them. I think she'll be more respectful and keep the tone low-key and hopeful.

I know Stevie was not confirmed yet, but lots of time I have noticed for events that are televised, Stevie's name doesn't come up much, even if she is performing. JMO. Could also be that she is not confirmed yet, so they didn't want to mention it in the commercial. I know artists late to confirm are listed usually as "and more"

I can't imagine Stevie singing "Landslide" to a TV audience of millions at a hurricane relief concert. It doesn't matter if the point of the song isn't about a natural disaster. Most of the people hearing it won't know that, and it will come across as inappropriate singing about a landslide bringing someone down when there are numerous bodies floating around in New Orleans. Surely Stevie's PR people will realize that.
I think HAEWFY is the most appropriate song. Outside of that, it would be nice if she would find some covers that are relevant to the reason she is on stage. These televised post-disaster shows aren't just a rock concert to raise money; they are intended to bring people together and be a part of the healing process. I don't see how Stand Back fits in, myself.

I just so do not see that connection and that song is failrly well known. Also, she was going to sing it after the Towers fell in a, if you will, Landslide to wit (from www.nicksfix.com)
As I said last night, we didn’t go back to New York. I was very disappointed. I wanted to sing “Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You?”, and “Landslide” for New York.

First, I want to be clear that I would not find it inappropriate for her to do Landslide. I'm talking about how I think the average person would respond.
If the show is televised, your average person is only going to hear the word "Landslide" and even if they are familiar with the song, aren't going to think it through like we would.
If she takes some time to preface the song with some words about what it is about, what it means to her, and why she wants to sing it at this benefit, then it will probably go over very well. But,out of context, a song with the title of a natural disaster might not be well received.
It's just my opinion. I think Stevie is lovely for even considering doing this given what's going on in her life. It's not a dig at her, just my thoughts on how people might respond.

she did two
Landslide and Ring Around Your Neck, the latter required her to stay for the whole thing. She also stayed for Crowe's CP thingee awhile back, which was way cool because to she La Nicks and Chrissie Hynde on the same stage as Clapton was almost mind blowing.

HAEWAFY should at least get a slightly offensive for And The Rain Came Down part, leaving only Rhiannon and Stand Back, and for some reason I find Stand Back just to be wrong to perform. I think the best bet would be Rock and Roll, there's nothing wrong with her soign a rocking number and a benifit is a perfect time to sing a cover.

ooooh, i forgot about the "and the rain comes down" part... although, that would seem more fitting than inappropriate.. i think Stand Back would work well if she's gonna do something upbeat, because it is about something not having to do with anything about rain or a disaster.. plus, it's one of her biggest hits..
if she wants to just keep it serious though, than HAEWAFY is the song to do, imo..

I venture to guess they'll be VIP tickets which will cost a significant amount of money and then, I figure there will be reduced price nosebleeds (i.e. $60+) for those that want to attend a worthy cause and don't have as much to spare. I'm highly doubting this will be broadcast simply because of the slew of events already occuring. If it is, i'll be very surprised.

Well, I think Rhiannon is perhaps the most potentially offensive of all. My memory is muddled, but wasn't Rhiannon the harbinger of death in Welsh legend ? Stevie singing "Rhiannon" would be sort of like BOC singing "(Don't Fear) the Reaper.".
But then again, how can the Neville Brothers NOT perform one of their better-known songs like "Fire on the Bayou"? That's pretty offensive on the face of it... but at the same time, that's the reality of what is happening in their hometown. They just have to do it.
Also, I don't know how they can do a benefit that is one continuous somber dirge. There will be poignant moments as well as up moments. I mean, how many downer songs is Earth Wind and Fire known for?? At the Concert for New York following 9/11 there was also a lot of anger... and there is perhaps an even greater degree of anger to be vented here at the incompetency of our government. I would love for Stevie to rip Dubya a new opening with "Long Way to Go." Ain't gonna happen, but one could only dream...
I think she will do HAEWAFY and hopefully "Whenever I call you Friend" with Loggins and Messina (in a much lower key of course :p ). But I also think Eo17 would be perfect. Not only was it one of her biggest hits, it is upbeat, but very intense, but still cathartic. I think "Gypsy" is also hopeful, but at the same time, potentially offensive, considering there are now a half million real-life gypsies roaming the southland...
Oy, this is tough...

You look at many of the other music telathons (I don't know what you want to call them) that have been happening lately -- the point of these get-togethers is to get people buying tickets and into the venue (if it's an actual event) or donating money to support this cause. I'm assuming most if not all of the proceeds garnered through this concert will be going directly to helping the victims through either an organization like Red Cross or through some other means. That said, in order to pack people in and have them spend money on said tickets (assuming most are incredibly expensive), these performers need to be doing something either once in a lifetime (a la a duet with one of the other performers) OR their hits. Yes, it's for a cause and that's what we should be most focused on. However, people are going to see a concert as well -- as horrible and trivial as that sounds in these peoples time of need -- the concert goer wants something too (not me necessarily but in general). These performers have signed on to lend their name and talent to raise money to help the people in the affected areas -- I wouldn't necessarily say they're performing for them as most of them more than likely won't get to see it (especially if it isn't televised). Therefore, I don't think we need to worry about a lyric having to do with rain, water, etc.

I agree that no one should be worried about something as trivial as a lyric that has the words "rain" or "water" in them, but I do think that the performers and organizers of such things should be concerned about using decorum and being appropriate. Singing "Dig your grave" and stuff like that would do nothing to ensure that those things are adhered to. Keep it light and hopeful and bouncy and loving, but don't go out there and depress people even more.

Well, I think Rhiannon is perhaps the most potentially offensive of all. My memory is muddled, but wasn't Rhiannon the harbinger of death in Welsh legend ?To Stevie, Rhiannon is the song that helps heal people. She quotes from it & sings it for people who are lying in cancer ward beds (remember the letter to Patrick?), or sends it to troops facing bombs & bullets overseas.
I would think Rhiannon would be the first song Stevie would want to sing in the aftermath of a disaster.
Now, I happen to think Stevie sort of misinterprets the Rhiannon mythology, & that your take on it is closer to its essence in Celtic lore (I discussed the Stevie Nicks angle of it once with Dorothea Kenny, a Celtic & Irish literature scholar from UCLA, & she just sort of cocked her head quizzically at Stevie's Rhiannon comments). But very few people would have read Graves or Frazier or Celtic myths, so the possibly offensive use of the motif in a Stevie Nicks song seems to me a moot point.

It wasn't so much a joke (actually, it wasn't a joke at all) as a song parody with satire in it. I started thinking about how some of Stand Back lyrics actually applied, then the parody came out. It was in no way meant to be disrespectful. I'm suprised you thought that.
nahh, i really didn't think it was disrespectful :wavey:

This event is not the time or the place to "prove she still has it". She is lending her name and talents to raise money for the hurricane victims.
If she chooses to do Landslide, a month after losing her Daddy, I will be fine with that. I think HAEWAFY is what we are getting and I am really amazed that there is debate about other songs. If Taku might be playing with her, obviously we are getting something that her solo band knows how to play, something from the last tour. She doesnt need Taku for Landslide. With the list of performers, she will get one song and maybe a duet. HAEWAFY is the song Stevie will probably "want" to do. Personally, I don't think there is a chance in Hell, she will do Stand Back. She will want to do something that she feels "speaks to the victims"...like Has Anyone.

yes but I also thought this event was suppose to be something to make people happy and lift them off their feet. Not a slow ballad that will bring people to tears and make them remember the horrible event! Why not play something spunky and fun, get everyone dancing and HAPPY!

Oh that would be so cool, but since Kenny Loggins apparently doesn't like Stevie, as his quote "of all the people I have worked with, she is one of them" I don't think he would go for it.I remember reading that Loggins quote (though I can't remember when or where), but they have performed together in recent years, so I doubt there's any bad blood between them.
Not to mention that a friend of mine sent me a tape with footage from VH1-Classic from about two years ago, and Kenny is hosting a block of videos from artists that he personally selected. He talks about Stevie very fondly, and makes a lighthearted joke about how she called him a "taskmaster" in the studio, and then they play the "Whole Lotta Trouble" video (which he says he had never seen before).
Still, that being said, I highly doubt Stevie and Kenny will duet together during this concert. Kenny will be there with Jim Messina, not as a solo artist.
