Alas, I have been awake since 2:59 AM- Cannot sleep.
Nothing serious on my mind-just no sleeping for me. Not sure why, but I have been waking up at the witching hour for about a week- Part of me (the witch part), thinks it has to do with the moon phase (New moon, just going into its first quarter phase...lots of energy, and all that...blah blah.)
However, it is losing it's romantic feel, and I'm tired!!
Who has a good remedy for sleeplessness??
(and please- no counting sheep- chanting-warm milk-herbal tea-meditation-warm bath- whisky and/or tequila suggestions)
Tried em' all- no luck
Oh yeah---Just ignore my sig-I wish it for me too, but it's not happening
Just do something while you're awake anyway, like reading or some simple chores. Some physical exercise is quite good, actually.
As long as you're not watching tv or sitting at the computer, that's definitely not good.
You could also try melatonine pills, that's the stuff they use to get over jetlags.

Run around naked in your backyard while slapping yourself with a dead fish and singing "I feel pretty." Always works for me.
But what if she doesn't have a backyard? Or a dead fish at hand? (I have neither, but I don't have a sleeping problem)
Would a frozen steak, in your living room, do as well?

I suppose it will have to suffice. But to compensate for the lack of yard and fish, she must also do the cha-cha for 15 minutes straight.

You are all so helpful
But I am being serious--
Would have to be a few more weeks before I took Lux's advise...
And Moony , although I do in fact have a back yard and probably some frozen fish in the freezer....somehow...I just don't think it's gonna work for me.
And Mari, tried the pills years ago did nothing.
And I forgot to rule out Valerian Root Pills or tea- Lavender on my pillow-
and thinking positive f*ck*ng thoughts...
Tried em'- Don't work
Keep the suggestions coming, I'll check back...
Now I have to go to school/work
If you tried everything, how about having a doctor look at it?
Or is that going to get a madface for a reply too? My first reply was serious, actually.
I've had sleeping problems too in the past, was very glad that certain meds I'm on now have sleepiness as a side-effect.
I understand you're getting frustrated and probably tried everything, I just wonder if you're going to get a new advice here then. Time for an expert, perhaps.

If I cannot relax and go to sleep, I turn on a CD or my local soft jazz station. I am one of the most unrelaxed people in the world, but listening to music helps me every time.
Good luck!

A doctor once told me to try Benedryl if I cannot sleep. I don't have that severe of insomnia so I haven't taken it because it has all kinds of stuff in it that isn't for sleeping so it seemed like a strange suggestion. However, if I were desperate I would probably try it.

Benadryl knocks me out like nothing else
If I'm having a really hard time sleeping I take that or Tylenol PM....but that's only if I really really can't sleep...
Which is rare...I've been blessed with no/very few sleeping issues.

Good luck! That usually helps me, too. Something like Norah Jones or Christine is always good for that. And I have CDs with heart sounds on them too, for that purpose. And stethoscopes, too, but that's mostly a "Hillary thing."

Why don't you just take 1/2 or 1 tylenol PM before you want to go to bed? The dosage is 2, so when I have them I just take 1, and I'm fine in the morning, and I fall asleep within about 45 mins. Simple pimple.

I go for a long walk before bed if I'm too wired to sleep. It totally clears my head. Or, at risk of reviving my GROSS status, I have a wank. That tends to do the trick too.

I was going to suggest the same thing. I know that the doctor told my husband to try that when he was having a hard time sleeping. It is safe and non-habit forming. Benadryl is for allergies, and it is safe enough to take daily. I take allergy medication on a daily basis, and I have been for years---by doctor's orders. You need to make sure that you get the kind that doesn't have the any decongestant in it. Otherwise, it won't work. I always buy the capsules. They are pink and white. Here is more information on it. http://www.drugs.com/benadryl.html

Oh my! That would do it!
--or--
try deep breathing, NOT filling your lungs but expanding your diaphram~~~this clears out a lot of the "bad/old" oxygen~~ inhale and exhale this way for about 15 deep breaths~~this will slow the heart rate~~
the other thing that works well for "in tune" people is "awake dreaming" -- kind of like day dreaming ~~ but more along the lines of fantisizing about a scenario with a conscious effort to fall asleep while doing it~~taking yourself deeper and deeper into a "dream state" until you fall asleep. This may take 15-30 minutes of conscious effort. This may not make sense to some people~~~ but to those have the ability to do it~~it works wonders~~~

Benadryl is just as effective as the plank upside the head remedy. One of those puppies with a hot beverage and it's LIGHTS OUT, Bedtime for Bonzo! ;) You can get a "hangover" from it, though. You may wake up groggy. So if you have to operate heavy machinery in the morning, such as a toaster (lifting those Pop Tarts can be a bitch!), or electric toothbrush, keep this in mind. :woohoo:

Try reading. Books on electrical Magnitism (with the equations), Grad level Micro and Macro economics, The History of Cheese (Although this one doesn't always work, as cheese is exciting compared to the other ones) , Any books on Accountancy, .... Better yet if you can find any of the above as "books on tape".
Seriously, I have 2 dvd's that just knock me out everytime I turn them on. Although interesting, they tend to send me to sleepland as I have seen them dozens of times. One is a documentary on Japan. The other is a Documnetary of Balanchine and his muse. For some reason the combo of musical interludes and documentary style get me sleepy. (I think I am subconsiously programmed now to sleep whenever either of those are played). You just have to try to find something that works for you.

Cardio exercise (but not before bed)
Deep breathing (from the diaphram)
Moist heat on the neck and shoulders
Ambien is the sh*t
Tylenol PM works, but it makes me groggy
Ativan works, too, but it is highly addictive (I use it when I fly and it knocks me out)
I have a chronic pain condition after a nasty car accident five years ago, and good, restorative sleep is a MUST for me. If I don't sleep, I get really bad migranes.

My aunt was in a terrible car accident a few years ago and has been in chronic pain ever since. She had her house up for sale and a woman came to look at it and noticed my aunt was barefoot on her hardwood floors. She said "I'm a physiotherapist, and I have to ask you, why are you barefoot on hardwood? It's the worst thing you can possibly do for your body! You should be wearing shoes with support to absorb the shock of walking on hardwood." So, needless to say, my aunt started wearing indoor shoes that day and the pain has significantly reduced.
Thought I'd throw that at ya, just in case you're walking barefoot on hardwood or concrete floors. Both are bad. Anything that has nothing to absorb your weight as you step on it, apparently.

Thanks for the advice. However, I am a bit neurotic about wearing shoes almost all the time. I hate walking barefoot and getting crap on my feet. I usually wear sandles or flip flops inside. I will pass this info on to my sis who is always barefoot and also has a chronic pain condition. Thanks! :wavey:
Don't know if it was mentioned already, but a good pillow and mattress can help too. I got this expensive pillow a few months ago and since then I notice I just lie a lot more comfortable and have less pesky little neckpains/shoulderpains in the morning. So you rest more effectively. Hm.. and things like draft in your bedroom, the temperature, fresh air.. the environment, I mean.

You have Ativan just lying around? Well yes, that will help.
This cracked me up- I thought the very same thing.
Since my husband and I are unfortunate enough to NOT have any Ativan around, we take Benadryl every night before we go to bed. Tylenol PM makes me feel like hell the next day, Benadryl doesn't seem to have that effect. Insomnia sucks- good luck.

Melatonin...2 2mg tablets about an hour before "bedtime".
It is the hormone that puts us to sleep...as we age, the pineal gland in the brain that produces Melatonin slows down and doesn't produce it in sufficient quantities. So, we should take supplements.

Strange. Because Tylenol PM contains the main ingredient of a "Benadryl" cap. It's just blended with acetaminophen.
Active Ingredient: Diphenhydramine HCl
