Sorry, I missed a day- oh, well......

What is up with all this Tango love??? You would think some of Stevie's solo songs would get to leave the island before the crapola from TITN? (I happen to love "When I See You Again" and "Welcome to the Room... Sara", so what the hell do I know....)

With seven votes, "When I See You Again" is tired of staring at the stairs on the island and wishes to go find Lindsey to say over and over and over and over again, "Whasssamattahhh, bay-beh???"

right now we are in round 5. At the towers discretion....the round will end and he will tally up the votes-give us a rundown of the winner, and then we start voting again all in this thread, but we will be in round 6.
sift through the other threads and you'll see where the other rounds begin..but all in the same thread :)

Ahhh now I get it thank you and Curtis as well. I was wondering why that first thread was going on so long but never bothered to look because I thought you could only vote once. But why not just start new threads so you don't have to keep checking to see when he decides to end a round? Eh whatever...

I finally heard the Laura Brannigan version and Stevie's version blows it out of the water and made me appriciate the song even more.

Me four! This was the only song I liked at first listen on OSOTM. I like lots of other songs on there now, but still. Lots of people really don't like it, though. I think that's strange, it's a very simple, straightfoward, pretty song.
I like Branigan's version a smidge better, though. To my ears, it has more quiet pathos.

Really? I'm shocked. I listened to the both of them back to back last night and here was my assessment - The keyboards in Laura's version are so much cheesier, if that makes sense. The production on Stevie's sounds a lot more professional to me and they seemed to have done more with the song. Vocally there is no comparison in my mind. Stevie sings it with such conviction. I really feel like she is singing this song with a certain person in mind and perhaps that is why she picked it to be on her album. I didn't get that feeling from Laura. Maybe I'm just a little biased here ;). Interesting to hear that you like Laura's better.

Either way the song is simply divine and I'm so glad you love it as well. Wish more people did.

Ha, i think the production in stevie's version is much cheesier. They did do more, both production wise and vocally - In this case I think I just think less is more. But I love them both. "So what is this...when you can
What is this...what about me
What is this...(What is this)
I understand...(I understand)
What is this...I'm lonely...I'm lonely...(I'm lonely)"

is waited for in Egypt and needs to find the meaning of love and surrender. Gawd knows how this one got out so early- I still have no idea what the hell she's talking about in this song. And here I thought that "Welcome to the Room... Sara" would follow her sister Whasssamatta Baby in a Tango duet.

It's a sweet, simple song. I don't find it particularly deep or awe-inspiring, but considering the period in which it was written, it's shockingly good. She sounds more invested in what she's singing than she does in 99% of the stuff she recorded during that time and for a few years afterwards; I just like it.

I'm not sure what they are called, but my friend and bunches of other people here wear them all the time. I think they look great, when my friend wears hers she looks like a queen. :) Open your mind, brothah!!! oh, and I think at the time her dreds were in there. :)

The strangest thing is the following - Dental Tragedies. You want an argument for a national dental plan - go to Oklahoma. The common term for bad teeth there is "f-cked up grill". If I saw one, I saw 50 of 'em. I never realized how important good teeth are.

Well, I flew into Dallas, which was chock full of hot military guys on their way, I assume, to NOLA. I didn't get clocked for being a homo there, so Okla was nothin. And the friend I was visiting makes Harvey Fierstein look butch. The entire state puts up with him, so I think I was under the radar.

You know I used to really be into her. I got tickets to The Smokin Grooves tour at Universal Ampitheater back in 97 and the she was so great I came back the next night just to see her. Something invested?!? What, crappy self absorbed lyrics that are the epitome of self parody? Okay, yeah, you got me there....

But seriously, why don't you like CW? It seems like a very simple, poignant, melodic song to me. I think the lyrics are pretty darn good, if simple. I love the minor key. There are no excessively strange vocal problems...the production is okay...it seems heartfelt while she's singing it - good vocal.
What I mean is, I can see why this isn't someone's favorite, but I can't see why someone would hate it. (I'm not being snuffeluppagish, I just really don't understand. :) ) I would understand indifference to this song much more than hatred of it.

BLEEEECCHHCHCH!!!!!

It's a piece of ****.

The lyrics are the worst from Diane Warren's songbook- and the bitch didn't even write it. Jude Johnstone showed her worst hack characteristics on this song. Again, the lyrics are abysmal.

The metaphor is so trite and hackneyed it's like a sledgehammer over the head. I'm surprised they didn't stick a "cuts like a knife" and a "you hurt my heart, tore it apart" lyric in there it's so bad.

It's in the pit of ****ola with the worst like "Unconditional Love" (I didn't include this song in this because it's WAY to bad and it would have been the shoo-in).

It's like we're from two different universes right here. I think the lyrics are good - well put together. I see what you mean about *possible* cliches, but I think they arranged the words/meaning in this song so that it doesn't turn out trite - the words are compelling, simple, and heartfelt without being cliched.
And then, you think Desert Angel is good! now I'm really in bizarro Stevie universe! Impact? why, because it's a "serious subject"?
Just because words are about a more serious subject doesn't make them deeper, or more well placed. CW's lyrics are more subtle, too - she really hits us clumsily over the head with a crowbar in DA, IMO.
It looks like your big problem is that you don't like the lyrics to CW. But then, conversely, you do like the lyrics to DA.

Desert Angel is the opposite of everything I believe a song should be... :distress:

Desert Angel is ****. Her voice sucks (conviction or not, it's baaaaaaaaad), the lyrics would be laughable if they weren't so embarrassing, and I think it further shows what a naive little girl she is. That song is very hard to take seriously. It rambles on as if the lyrics don't fit the music, or vice versa, and while her heart may have been in the right place, I'm sure those soldiers received letters from schoolchildren that were better composed. That "We are the guardians" line always cracks me up, too, because I always think "Yeah, the guardians of the oil fields, you silly baby."

On another note, I'd love to corner Stevie and start asking her questions regarding the two Iraq wars, oil, and stuff like that. It would probably be like cornering a second grader and grilling him about tort reform.

TOSOTM is my hands down favorite Stevie record- however.....

"Cry Wolf" is a piece of shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit.

:p

Towie I had no idea OSOTM was your favorite!!!! :blob2:

Cry Wolf I enjoy a lot.

Damn right, Kneel baby....

Whatever, honey. I happen to think the whole "born in the desert" and, in fact, ALL of the verses are stellar and heartfelt and chilling. The bridge sucks and the Operation on and on part is grating. But, overall a song with impact.

How do you feel about Laura Brannigans(sp) version?

I think it further shows what a naive little girl she is.I've always found her naiveté to be completely endearing and refreshing. The jaded bitch thing's been done to death.

And then, you think Desert Angel is good! now I'm really in bizarro Stevie universe! Impact? why, because it's a "serious subject"?
Just because words are about a more serious subject doesn't make them deeper, or more well placed.
For me, it has more impact because Stevie seems to have more passion and conviction towards the song- it's not because of the subject matter.

"Well, this has always been my sanctuary..."

Love ya, but we'll have to agree TO LIVE IN DIFFERENT SOLAR SYSTEMS on this one... :xoxo:

No biggie. Curtis hated "Desert Angel" for 10,000 years and now he likes it. You'll come around... ;)

Ah, don't worry. Stevie has essentially written those lyrics in her songs for you to enjoy.
Yep. "Freedom" and "Affairs of the Heart". While I like those two songs, they were the kickoff to her season of klonopinized ****ty songwriting.

Desert Angel is ****. Her voice sucks (conviction or not, it's baaaaaaaaad)
It's no worse than all the other music recorded at that time. And it's certainly not worse than her voice was during parts Rock A Little and during ALL of Tango in the Night.

the lyrics would be laughable if they weren't so embarrassing, and I think it further shows what a naive little girl she is. That song is very hard to take seriously.
I don't take the song seriously at all, but something about parts of it (mainly the verses) is goosefleshy for me.

It rambles on as if the lyrics don't fit the music, or vice versa
That's pretty much the way it is with the majority of her send-me-a-tape-and-I'll-sing-to-it-in-the-bathroom-while-reading-from-my-journals songs. The worst offender of the bunch is "That Made Me Stronger" (which I think might win this thing).

That "We are the guardians" line always cracks me up, too, because I always think "Yeah, the guardians of the oil fields, you silly baby."
Yeah- but by this point in the song all my favorite stuff is already over with. The bridge stops the song cold for me- so, all the war stuff after that is nothing for me.

I agree, though I am not wild about the music, etc. I think people like to beat her up for doing something nice.

If Stevie had co-written it there may have been such lines in it!

"Cut me like a knife, cool and collected" - FREEDOM

"It would break your heart, tear it apart" - AFFAIRS OF THE HEART

That was a weak argument coming from you, Towie.

EDIT - Silly Sparky for not reading the whole thread.

Those songs are okay. I like the guitar part on Freedom, and the drums. And the verses. The chorus, all three notes of it, kills the song for me, though. Affairs, average. Again, the cliche factory was in overdrive. Not bad for Klonopin era.

Aww, I like you too. Way more than I like either of those songs.

I, too, think AOH borderes on silly with the Bard reference. I do like the "One set of doors was the color of honey" part.

The honey thing is kinda clever. I must have heard the alternate at some point. I can't keep track of them anymore. My brain's hard drive needs a defrag.

I think I am gonna try to find a place to download Self Control. It is a funky day in LA - overcast, and I have an upset stomach. I attribute this to my idiotic choice to eat 2 crab puffs at an Emmy party last night. I was starved. I shoulda known better. Sparky and Seafood just don't mix. :distress:

OH MY GOD.

This song is kicking my ass. Fourth play in a row. The entire video with the alley, the blowing curtains, the guy in the mask is all flooding back to me. Awesome.
I am so having a "Sparky at 17" moment - riding the bus downtown to walk around and see what kind of sexual trouble I could find. I can specifically remember a hot July night strolling down Park Avenue in Downtown Portland and I actually heard this song blaring into the street. It was totally right out of the video. This song so corrupted me ! It is so damned sexy. That opening riff is a nut buster, and that cheesy "Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh", Lord Have Mercy.
I swear this was like the soundtrack of the call of the danger :

"I, I live among the creatures of the night,
I haven't got the will to try and fight..."

What a riot. I am strung out on Laura Branigan. Next I will dig up Glenn Frey's "You Belong To The City" and there will be no stopping or saving me. Someone I know MUST have a motorcycle I can borrow.
