View Full Version : Stevie Nicks had an abortion??

I was just reading on a bio website that Stevie had an abortion and was carrying Don Henley's child. Is that information true? If so, what year did this happen, and what did Stevie say she wanted the child's name to be?

I've heard this story a lot over the years, and to my knowledge Stevie has never made an official statement on the matter. But from what I heard, I *think* she did have an abortion. I don't know about it being Don Henley's kid...probably Jimmy Iovine's if anyone's.

Newbies. They're so adorable.

I may be a newbie to this forum, but i have been a SN/FM fan since the mid 90's. But that doesn't answer my question.

But that still doesn't answer my question.Don Henley once spilled that Stevie had an abortion and the baby was theirs. About any or all others, your guess is as good as mine. Nothing has ever been confirmed, just speculated. :)

Yes it's true Stevie had an abortion.

You might want to check out Mari's site and read the Vox article among others...

Didn't Don make some statement that was really rude or something about it? Anybody know what he said that was so offensive?

LilyRose

I'd take everything said in the Vox "interview" with a grain of salt.

This topic comes up every now and then. Don spilled the beans about the abortion that she had sometime in the 70s when they were dating, to Vanity Fair in the 90s. Stevie confirmed it. Don said he thought that she named the child Sara and that's what the song was about, but Stevie never confirmed that.

And that's pretty much all that's ever been said about it since.

Listen to Goodbye Baby and it is pretty straight forward with lyrics such as...

"Don't take me to the tower and take my child away"- don't take her to the abortion clinic

"I who was the hour glass"- she's pregnant

"And I who went to sleep as two, woke up as one"- that is pretty clear

"I'lll be with you one day"- They'll meet again in heaven

And, on the SYW album there is a baby breathing in the background of the song if you listen real good...

Just my 2 cents!

Just my 2 cents! She didn't say this song was about Lindsey? I don't remember; I'm just asking.

Also, does a baby's breathing sound that different from an adult's. Again, I don't really know.

I read she made significant changes in the lyrics compared to the original written version. I believe that was done to include Lindsey in her goodbye song. I think it's both about Lindsey and her baby.

esp since she is not realy holding her stomach as much as she is hugging herself - at least to me.

Personally, I think the song is part of the Rhiannon series and is about the taking of Rhiannon's baby and telling her it died. Maybe, like in many of her other songs, Stevie personalized it, but I think it is about Rhiannon, which is not about La Nicks. But, until she talks about it, no one can claim they are correct and even then, who knows as her songs are often about more than one thing.

I didn't make this connection with the SYW version, but the demo, definitely... this verse is what got me....

And when you hold yourself and know that
There were two...
Now only you remain...

her vocals on this part of the demo are seriously heartbreaking...

*It could also be about the story of Rhiannon too, in the book, her son is taken away.... but who knows

. . .

And when you hold yourself and know that
There were two...

I think that also could be being in bed holding yourself and and wishing the person that was there (husband, etc. ) was there but now only you remain.

But, it certainly could be a child.

Listen to it at full volume on headphones and listen to the last ten seconds of the song. I swear is is a baby's breath.

Shhh...now this isn't generally known, but for *certain songs* on SYW, Stevie, being the big I Love Lucy Fan that she is, dressed up a big hunk of Italian cheese to LOOK like a baby. She named it "Don" and claimed it looked (and SMELLED) EXACTLY like its father! ;)

I too have always been under the impression that "Goodbye Baby" was about her abortion. Though I probably just read it somewhere on some possibly no longer existing website and never cared enough to find any real evidence to support it. Still, the lyrics do suggest that theory.

I can't picture Stevie being dragged to the abortion clinic, although maybe she was talked into it. How many times have we had to hear her say she was talked into taking off her top for the Buckingham Nicks cover and regrets it to this day?? Makes her sound like she was young and gulliable and easy to manipulate.

Uh, I have never read anything where Stevie said she would have "four little Stevie's" running around. I would like to see that.
I do recall her admitting that Don let the cat out of the bag with his GQ interview so she confirmed that one.
The interview from Europe where she talks about "four" of something...well, I dunno, I have read it and dont remember exactly what she said. I do not remember it being exactly cut and dry but I really hate to get into this debate again.
I do remember her saying in like 2001 that if she and Lindsey would have had a child "he would be 25 now". I always found that to be a rather interesting quote.

Goodbye Baby...the "don't take me to the tower line" could be about the Rhiannon myth but I think she was writing about her own experiences. (Stevie) I do not think the line was meant to be literal...as in no one was actually dragging her to some abortion clinic. I always thought the song was about a miscarriage anyway and the "take me to the tower" line could mean going to the hospital after or during..... The original Tower lyrics sound more like a miscarriage than an abortion to me. If she was writing about Rhiannon, I seriously doubt she would have named it as one of the most emotional songs to sing each night as she did in her Ask Stevie answers. There also would be no need to alter the song to make it sound like she was saying goodbye to a lover, as she did when she rewrote certain parts for SYW. SHe could have used the older lyrics and just said it was about the Rhiannon myth.
Plus, LBs production of the song, the tick tock lullabye quality, her wistful sad vocals, the way she looked when recording the song on the documentary..so vulnerable and quiet.......it all makes me think the song is deeply personal to both she and LB.
Just my opinion of course.

David

Goodbye Baby...the "don't take me to the tower line" could be about the Rhiannon mythOr to the Mag Tured (Moytura -- the Plain of Towers) in the legends of the Tuatha De Dannan, an ancient Irish people who practiced lore & magic & druidism & wizardry until they surpassed the sages of the arts of heathendom. The first battle of Moytura was fought between the Tuatha & the Fir Bolg; the Fir Bolg were routed & a hundred-thousand of them were slain, including their King Eochaid, son of Ere.
I always thought the song was about a miscarriage anyway and the "take me to the tower" line could mean going to the hospital after or during. The first thing I thought was, "How is a hospital like a tower?" But then I thought that Stevie is probably referring to the The Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital, founded in 1892 by Dr. William Macklin (a Disciples of Christ medical missionary). The hospital is named for its location beside the ancient drum tower of the city) & has a staff of nearly 2,100, including 223 physicians, who provide medical services to the residents of Nanjing & neighboring provinces!

I always interpreted the word "tower" to be a metaphor for the difficult situation she was in: deciding whether to have a baby or an abortion; kind of a trap from which she couldn't/wouldn't escape... I always felt those lines were her talking to herself.

Cool down! Since when have I dismissed your post or called it crazy talk?! I was simply interested in reading the interview and posted again as I thought my original post had been overlooked. I simply don't remember reading it myself and wondered if I were the only one! Crikey!

In GB, I've wondered what the lyrics "and the sands of time like shattering glass went past me like a tunnel to the sea" mean. I've heard this song is about "the baby" and if it is, what do those lyrics mean with reference to "the baby"? I agree, when I saw the documentary of the making of GB and how Stevie looks at Liddy, it's about him, it looks as though she's gonna break into tears at any moment.

Shhh...now this isn't generally known, but for *certain songs* on SYW, Stevie, being the big I Love Lucy Fan that she is, dressed up a big hunk of Italian cheese to LOOK like a baby. She named it "Don" and claimed it looked (and SMELLED) EXACTLY like its father! ;)

Ok this was funny and I can't believe nobody commented on it. This made me laugh coz I've seen that one and it was hysterical. Poor Don tho. Smelling and looking like a big cheese.

I really can't believe anybody could think that Stevie would be so crass as to put a baby's breathing on one of her songs that might or might not be about an abortion. Or that she would hold her stomach. That whole idea is crass. Stevie has more class than that and she doesn't like to write or sing about sex openly, let alone *act out* abortion. I'm liberal but it's nothing I (or she, I'm sure) would take lightly. I think GB is her saying goodbye to Lindsey and their past relationship which she says in the song she never really had done. That is one song that I think is actually (and not just wishfully) about him. He's married, kids, all that and it seemed pretty clear that since they got together to make SYW, they also felt it was necessary to say *goodbye* to each other properly, therefore the two goodbye songs at the end of SYW. Not goodbye professionally, but goodbye personally with some feeling instead of the angry, mean way they did it before. It's called closure. Two awesome songs, btw.
