That's right, folks :D . We're doing the Street Angel album now. Diss (and many other posters), I'm sure, won't bother to reply to any of these threads other than to vote "1*" for every song. Curtis, I'm sure, will write novels about how great all of them are. Let the games begin.
I like the song Jane a lot. It's probably one of my favorites on this album. I first heard it when I saw Behind the Music in 1998 (I didn't have all of her solo CDs yet at that point.) I fell in love with her vocal delivery of "such a little girl, such a hard life." I remember not knowing what the song title was, but I wanted to hear the whole thing. The harmonies on the ending "In the eyes of the world, you have done so much" are so rich. I would have liked the song to end with those harmonies, as opposed to continuing quietly for several seconds afterwards.
So. The "forgotten chimpanzee" line. Not enough to ruin it for me. Laughable, especially to the casual listener? Definitely. Doesn't bother me all that much.
The music is subdued, which I like because it does not oevershadow the vocal at all. It's a sad song, obviously, but somehow hopeful at the same time. I think her vocals are very strong here.
Live. She did do it live at a benefit, correct? No boots that I know of. I'd like to hear it once, but I don't really want to see it go into the setlist or anything. I think she could do it now & do it well, but there are many other songs I'd rather have her sing.

Just in case some people don't know, the song is about Jane Goodall. I think it's one of the better songs on the cd. I love it.

1 Chimpanzee. Sentiment doesn't make a good song.

3 chimps from me. At first I really hated this song, but I think that was a combination of my dislike and the hate most people seem to have for this song. It's grown on me but I swear she's choking on the word "chimpanzee" when she sings it, as though she can't believe that word is coming out of her mouth. The "you have done so much" towards the end is really quite great though.

I like this song. I agree with Paula that the chimpanzee line is goofy but it doesn't really bother me. The music is pretty and there are some nice harmonies too. Overall I like the feel of the song: some sadness but still a little optimistic. :)

I gave it 4 Chimps. It's so silly and so "Stevie" you have to like it. She was probably drugged up to her eyeballs when she wrote it. :woohoo: :p :woohoo:

I agree with all of this. I think the problem is that it is out of place on the album since there is no explanation of why she is singing about a chimp. I think the song is beautiful and clearly something Stevie was very emotional about. However, I think it would have made much more sense on a benefit album, etc. Or at least a dedication in the Street Angel album sleeve.

3 Chimpanzees - A)I'm a sucker for animal rights activists.
B) It's pretty, good vocal.
C) Thanks, Strand, never heard that before. The piano is very pretty.

Not a fan of this song! I gave it two stars, or 2 chimps!
Did I miss the Other Side of the Mirror polls? Or did we skip that one?

I don't think Paula has done OSOTM yet. If so, I missed it.

It's not my favorite from Street Angel, but I still like it a great deal. The chimp line might be strange, but some others make up for it, IMO. For example:
Through a window all our sorrows
Would become our only visions...
Nothing more
2 chimps. As others have already said, I like the vocal and the melody a lot; the lyrics just don't do much for me...

I just screwed up and gave it four chimpanzees by mistake. I think I was up just a little too late last night.
I would actually give it 2 .5. I like the melody and some of the lyrics, but the 'chimpanzee' line just ruins it for me.
I do love the line "Through a window all our sorrows would become our only visions".

5 CHIMPS!
Where do I begin with this song? Let's start with the music. Wow. Jane has some of the best notes she has ever written. It's melodic....smooth....makes you want to tear up it's so beautiful. The Master Reel outtake adds to the gorgeousness...
The lyrics? Perfection.
Such a little girl
Such a hard life
:sigh: That is some powerful stuff! As for the forgotten chimp line....it's not tacky and laughable (well...it does make ya chuckle a bit). I can relate to that line. Stevie is asking there "How would you feel if you were the forgotten one in your own habitat?" That kinda reminds me of what went on in NOLA. They were the the "fogotten chimps" for awhile....struggling in their own environment, due to outside forces.....like the chimps.
Great closer. Great song. Great tribute. I wish she would bust it out for a live performance. :)

I like to dedicate this song to this building. It's where this tour started. If it wasn't for it, I wouldn't have toured. Thank you Las Vegas. This is for you....It's called Jane.

This could describe well over half of Stevie's solo work in my opinion. But usually it "works" on some weird level I can't fathom. Christine calls it "rubbish". But it's rubbish that many of us have picked up anyway. And stored in our houses!
