In the song lyrics that I'm finding online, they're written as "Nag Champra..."
What I burn is... "Nag Champa..."
Is that what she meant to say? Does she say that?
One time I hear Champa then the next, Champra...

Has anyone else noticed this?
Or am I just hearing and finding the wrong lyrics?!

She deffinitely says Nag Champra and it is in the lyrics in cd book too, but yes the incense is Nag Champa and you would think Stevie would know that given she is a hippy  .

I could only ever think that maybe ChampRa is easier to say?

She is famous for mis pronouncing words  , drownd-ed and CAR or Cart insted of heart come to mind... the live versions bug me from time to time..
"outeside the rain and the CART skips a beat" Does anyone else notice that one?

I think it's intentional in this case (though for whatever reason, I don't know  maybe there's some kind of legal/trademark issue with using the a brand name in a song.) She has pronounced it correctly in interviews before.

I think Nag Champa could be a particula so that is the only reason I can think of, not to mention if it was just a mis pronunciation then it would not have been written Mag ChampRa in the lyric sheets.

I've heard people call it Nag Champra too. I think it's a common mispronouciation of it. It's hard as a vocalist to keep all the lyrics straight 100% of the time. I sung in a band before and thank God people didn't record every single show we did. You do your best but sometimes you get lost in the passion of the song and your tongue and teeth don't go the right way. It happens.

Having said my singers defense, I do recall a time on the Arsenio Hall show when she was singing Stand Back and I swear she sings "First he took my car then he ran". Which I always thought given the strange lyrics it kind of fit. LOL! :]

My opinion on the Nag Champra thing is that she purposely does it to avoid trademark issues.

And anyone ever notice how elegantly she says "hand" while singing? :)
It's very prominent in 7W. lol. It's cute.

There are a few other times she sings it... but I can't remember right now.
I'm gonna have to go through and find all the quirks that I've noticed.
I shoulda written them down. lol :D

Oh yeah--in the "Everyday" video... does it bother any of you the way she looks when she says "senses yearning"? I don't know why, but I just don't watch that part.

And I've heard her say "I'm" as "am" many times... like in this video.
"Don't turn away--am listenin'." lol

For the longest time I thought in Dreams she was singing

"Like a heatbeat drives you back in the stillness of remembering..."

And from the live albulm (where there was no lyrics sheet provided)
Fireflies...what was she singing.... ??
I used to just make up words and sing along, ;)
when I was able to find the lyrics ,it was "Oh...that's what she's saying"...

and lets not forget:
Angel
"And to those that I love- like a ghost through the fog- like a charmed hour and a hunted song -and the Angel of my dreams..."
Must have listened to those lines 100 times before I figured out what she was singing!

My opinion on the Nag Champra thing is that she purposely does it to avoid trademark issues.I think it's just an unwitting mispronunciation on her part. If you search "nag champra" on the Web, you get dozens & dozens of links, so Stevie is part of a sizable community of "Nag Champa" mispronouncers.

As far as the trademark thing goes, I don't know ... it just seems doubtful to me that she would "work around" violating the Lanham Act by mispronouncing the trademark name. That seems so . . . you know, ridiculous. Actually, I'm not even really sure that "Nag Champra" is protected under U.S. trademark law because apparently the stuff is imported from India & there isn't a single distribution outlet. You can find hundreds of little companies online that import the junk & sell it on their own Web sites. Do they all have written contracts with the India company that manufactures it? Is there even a single company that does manufacture it? Who owns the trademark? I haven't bothered to look into it because I'm not much more interested than this. All I found out was that "champa" is a flower -- so "champa" or "champa flower" is not protected as a trademark.

Think of all the songs that refer to product names -- one song comes to mind immediately is Zevon's "Poor Poor Pitiful Me," which Lindsey even played & sang on! Stevie once referred to Warren as the songwriter who could "write about a Waring blender & get away with it," & she certainly wasn't referring to the Lanham Act.

No, I think she just mispronounces it. She isn't a language person, Stevie isn't. Nosirree.

I don't believe it's a trademark issue. When this whole Nag Champa thing came up when SYW first came out I called the store where Stevie is known to buy incense and things of the sort here is Los Angeles and they confirmed Nag Champa is NOT a brand name and has nothing to do with the trademark. It's a scent like lavendar and many there are many different brands that make Nag Champa. She mispronounced it whether it was intentional or not.

I totally noticed the whole "H" pronoucing trouble thing when I was listening to an accapella version of Long Way to Go.

"Can I be of any hhhhelp to you baby" I don't know how to type it, but it sounds like she's trying to cough up a hairball when she says some of her H's.

I think the mispronunciation had to be intentional considering she pronounces it correctly in interviews. I guess the question is why.
You know, I realized my trademark theory makes no sense anyway. The opening lines to the song are
"Illume..says the candle that I burn".
Illume candles are a brand...I think?

Maybe she realized after the album had been recorded and she was doing interviews that she was pronouncing it wrong or someone corrected her but by that time it was too late to change?

I always thought she was singing Illumine there, but I guess not? Then I thought maybe there was an accent on the last "e" in Illume, on the candles, but no:

Well that puts an entirely new twist to it and kills my whole theory that she was mispronouncing it on the record. So now we know that she knew the correct way of saying it so why in the heck would she intentionally mispronounce it on the album if it wasn't a trademark issue? She's weird....lol.

Speaking of Illume, what do you guys think of the song itself? When I first got SYW it was my favorite song on the album. They lyrics are profound and the message and story behind it, well I don't even need to go there. I love the tribal beat. The song has such an original sound and the production is amazing. Stevie has never done a song that sounds like Illume. It has faded as being one of my favorites but every once in a while I go back and listen to it and realize what a truly amazing song it is. Very spiritual, very powerful.

It seems, if you look on the web, you can find it both ways: nag champa and nag champra. Maybe one is a bastardized verson? Dunno. It would appear nag champa is the more universally used name, and maybe Stevie knows that, too. Maybe she just messed it up when she sang it  , but liked that take of it.

I LOVE the song. It is different and Lindsey's production is wonderful. I like how it sounds nothing like she normally does. The echo sound is perfect. Her vocals are heartfelt as well. I had such a hard time with people blasting her for writing this song. They seemed to entirely miss the point that she was expressing HER feelings about the day. I love the journal entries regarding the song and wish she would have kept the original lyrics...
"so when I remember that day in my life, I will remember that you were there". Swoon. The "I need you to be there" verse is beautiful but I like the journal entry soooo much. Interesting how Stevie admits to being needy....she usually doesn't.

I do not think many people blasted her for the the intent behind the song. Some people just found lyrics "just like a river - its never ending" trite. Personally, I love the song except for two things. I think the gimmicky voice is out of place and there should have been a third stanza. But, the whole dark to light concept is stunning and the urgency in her voice at the end is spellbinding to me.

Actually, To be honest, it's also the music I don't care for. It's okay, though. I hated the song when I first got SYW (and I don't really listen to it at all) but I listened to it a few months ago, and it wasn't as bad as I remembered. I give it a "C" - average.

Curtis!!! You owe me a pepperoni cheesesteak because I just spit mine out all over my keyboard (I read The Ledge at work during lunch). That is too funny. I'm gonna have to do that next time.

BTW, did you guys ever her the Fleetwood Mac jam bootleg where they are playing something that sounds like Eyes of the World, and Lindsay is singing the ba ba ba part and Stevie is singing "Whoa whoa, I hope you make it". And I've heard her say "I'm" as "am" many times... like in this video.
"Don't turn away--am listenin'." lol

That was actually a very common thing in the 70's rock scene. I think people started pronounciating words more distinctly in the 80's, but once you are trained to sing a certain way it becomes part of your style.

I did a cover of Castaway for the Gold Dust Project and found myself doing it the way she does "He knows that ah do not see him... Ah could leave today". And of course singing the word mystery as mist'ry. Which I just loved doing.

Yeah, singers seem to just pronounce things differently. I mean, how often does someone in real life say "Oh look at that little GUHL, she's so cute, what an anGELLLLLL. I wish I could grab her and run ay-WAY with her!"

Does anyone else hear "RAck on, Gold Dust Woman?" I know Stevie has a different sort of flatish accent sometimes but when I was little, man I didn't know WHAT that first word was supposed to be.

to me it almost sounds like Stevie's wearing a retainer when she speaks - it's so weird - really evident in the ET interview around the time of Enchanted

as far as her singing style...I think it's cool and I like that she does thing slightly off norm

Well, that would explain the mysterious vanishing of her overbite!

Ya know...
I've noticed something like that too... but it's only every now and then.
Like, it's really evident in The Making of Rumours and when she's on the couch for D.R.

Anyone else?

Sandy Stewart wrote the song and created a demo. They real lyrics were "you held the line"....Stevie thought she said "Emmiline".

so she's not illiterate she's deaf?

I always thought she was singing Illumine there, but I guess not? Then I thought maybe there was an accent on the last "e" in Illume, on the candles, but no:

http://www.illumecandles.com/

what's wrong with the way Stevie pronounces Illume? I always thought that was the normal way....but with an accent :D being an aussie I pronounce e's as a's so I say ill-ooh-meh i always thought it was weird tho

Very spiritual, very powerful.

i was totally in love with this song the first couple of times I listened to SYW but then RTTG and EFO consumed my life and i havent looked back.

personally i think the sound is VERY sexy......that tribal beat. if she didn't have the 9/11 disclaimer with the song or it's lyrics (coz the actual song is called Illume 9/11 I would not have pegged this as a worldly-disaster-terrorist-inspired-great-mayorship song. you could look at the song in terms of a relationship (ie S&L) OR in terms of the history of FM.

I don't like this song as much as I used to but it's a song i HAVE to have LOUD :D
