Former XENA: WARRIOR PRINCESS star LUCY LAWLESS has thanked the people of Louisiana, after complete strangers stepped in to help her escape the wrath of Hurricane Katrina.
The New Zealander recently fled New Orleans, where she's shooting new movie VAMPIRE BATS, when she learned that Katrina had become a category five storm.
And once she embarked on her journey out of the historic city on Sunday evening (28AUG05), she was taken aback by the generosity showered on her by people she barely knew.
Lawless and the movie's executive producer JILL TANNER ended up staying with a Baton Rouge family they met through a special effects artist.
She says, "I've never depended on the kindness of strangers before, but here, with the generosity of these people in the south, it seems appropriate."
As well as offering several private homes for the actress to stay in, a group of devoted Lawless fans had even managed to charter a plane and a pilot for the star to leave the area, but traffic restrictions prevented her from getting to the aircraft.
