Fats Domino
Among N.O. Missing
Updated 10:54 PDT Thu, Sep 01 2005

Fats Domino, a fixture in rock ‘n' roll history as well as in New Orleans, is among the tens of thousands reported missing since Hurricane Katrina struck that city August 29th.
Tracy Embry, the wife of Domino's agent Al Embry, confirmed the news to Pollstar from Nashville September 1st.
The legendary singer/pianist is best known for hits including "Ain't That A Shame," "Blueberry Hill," "Walking to New Orleans" and a cover of Hank Williams' "Jambalaya (On the Bayou)." He remained in his hometown, and was currently living in the family home in the Ninth Ward of New Orleans, reportedly the hardest-hit and lowest-lying section of the city.
"At this point we do not know his location. He was last seen Tuesday (August 30th) on the balcony of his house," Tracy Embry told Pollstar. He talked to Al (Embry) Sunday night, several times, and that's the last we've heard from him.
"He and his wife, a couple of the kids and a couple of the grandkids were going to just ride the storm out. We've been trying to get search and rescue over there since Tuesday and they were spotted, but we just don't have confirmation whether they were rescued or not. And if they were, where they took them.
"We honestly do not know anything yet if he was rescued or anything. At this point, he is still missing."
Refugees and others who have been rescued from rooftops and balconies have been taken by search and rescue teams to numerous locations throughout the region, and as far away as Houston. Communication remains spotty best with extremely limited telephone and cell phone capability for survivors to notify relatives and friends they are safe.
Tracy Embry asks that anyone with any information about Domino's location should call Al Embry International at 615-847-0123.
"He was in the worst spot he could have been," she emphasized. "We're trying to get the word out if anyone hears from him, sees him, or are in touch with any family members that did get out. We're all working together to try to find him."
Domino has received the Lifetime Achievement and Hall of Fame Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986.

I read another article that said he was spotted at the Superdome... don't know if that is confirmed.

I think you're referring to Allen Toussaint who originally was reported as missing, but was later seen boarding a bus from the SuperDome to the Houston Astrodome.

Still missing: singer Irma Thomas (who recorded the original version of "Time Is On My Side", which later became a Stones hit)

All the Neville family (Aaron, Art, Arthel, et al) have been reported as being ok, but now homeless.

The Marsalises (Branford, Wynton & Ellis, et al) have checked in as being ok, but their homes are gone, too.

Alex Chilton (of Big Star, the best band ever) is rumored to be among the missing in New Orleans.

I'd post a link, but I read it on an industry message board. HONO!!!1!

No, it said Fats Domino. Allen Toussaint was mentioned towards the end of the article... I'll see if I can find it.

Here it is...

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Rock 'n' roll legend Fats Domino is among the tens of thousands of New Orleans residents unaccounted for after floodwaters swamped the city famed for its musical heritage, friends said on Thursday.

The 76-year-old musician, beloved for his boogie-woogie piano style and such hits as "Ain't That a Shame" and "Blueberry Hill," told his manager Al Embry on Monday that he planned to "ride out" Hurricane Katrina at his home in New Orleans, the Fox News.com Web site said.

Fox News columnist Roger Friedman said the Nashville, Tennessee-based Embry last spoke to Domino on Monday afternoon, the day Katrina slammed into the U.S. Gulf Coast and that the musician has not been heard from since.

Embry could not immediately be reached for comment.

But Los Angeles-based comedian Harry Shearer, who has strong ties to New Orleans, told Reuters that he heard unconfirmed reports from friends that Domino had made it to the New Orleans Superdome, where more than 23,000 people have taken refuge.

Friedman also reported that another Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee from New Orleans, singer-songwriter Allen Toussaint, 66, was among refugees at the Superdome

Great! Thanks, Ken.

Alex Chilton (of Big Star, the best band ever)

Us "old folk" would remember Alex more for being the lead singer of The Box Tops. ;) In any case, hope he's ok.

I've seen a couple of personal accounts and had a couple of PMs from friends with friends, etc. that also confirms that Fats made it to the Superdome.

I know The Box Tops, too, you oldie :)

I hope Alex is safe. *Somewhat* ironically, Big Star is actually releasing their first studio album in three decades later this month.

of musical acts from NOLA from the metal community (ie-Phil Anselmo ex-Pantera), Who knows if they made it out or not.

Hopefully Fats Domino & Alex Chilton made it out alive.

Which by the looks of things is a fate nearly worse than death. Especially for an elderly person. The conditions there are deplorable. There are actually dead bodies IN the Superdome. :distress:

One of rock 'n' roll's chief architects has been rescued from the
rubble of New Orleans.

Fats Domino, who had been unaccounted for in the wake of Hurricane
Katrina, was plucked from the flooded city by a helicopter late
Thursday. He was reported to be in good condition.

An APB went out for the musician and his family earlier in the day.

The musician's niece, Checquoline Davis, posted a plea on
Craigslist.com for information on her missing relatives, writing that
Domino and his wife, Rosemary, and their children and grandchildren
"didn't get out" of their New Orleans home. Her plea was one of
thousands seeking information on missing friends and family on the
site.

I'm glad they found him. I was afraid that they'd find him dead, and all the headlines in the paper would read "Ain't It A Shame."

Us "old folk" would remember Alex more for being the lead singer of The Box Tops. ;) In any case, hope he's ok.
And a lot of us "not-so-old folk" know him as one of the co-writers of that song they play at the beginning of "That '70s Show."

No, I can't imagine that would fly. I suppose the joke was being made in newsrooms all around the country though!
