Hey guys.
If we are going to curse, please use a '*'
I know we are all guilty of this ( including me) by saying curse words with no '*'.
There are people here of all ages and backrounds and using profanity outright could offend some people. Plus, we need to stay within the FAQ guidelines.
Like football should be f**tball...cool? ( not that football is a curse word but you all know what I mean) ;)
Cool??
Does that make sense?

Honestly I think that is fine. I need to read up on the FAQ as we all do so we stay within the guidelines. But that is not a curse so go right ahead:) ( I always read that word with a Scottish accent in my head-try it, it's fun)

so, do we just replace the vowels? how many letters in the word are we required to replace with *? For instance, to me, f*ck still seems pretty obvious. ie, rendering the replacement pointless.
or, should it be ****? From your example, it looks like we don't have to replace all the letters.

There are plenty of other words in the dictionary to convey the various emotions covered by that little word though... might be fun for people to try some of those out for a change. :)

Janet - are you still a moderator, or just asking as a fellow Ledgie? I'm not being snarky - the "New Mods" announcement has disappeared now, and I can't remember. Just wondering if this is an official request, or a friendly request.
And as far as all the deleting of threads and all that - if the Mods feel it has to be done, fine. But when it happens, can we have an immediate post as to why? Maybe lock the thread, leave the title, and replace the contents with "This thread has been removed by *** because ***? Just an idea.
I truly know what a hard job that must be, and I don't begrudge them doing it. But in two of the other 3 threads about all this stuff, it took several pages to get an answer about what was going on and why it was done. If everyone will remember, the last time this started happening became a big, ugly affair last August.

Let it be known that we're mainly referring to the most vulgar of words, and the excessive use of those words... with the "f" word being the biggest offender.
I don't think most people would take issue with minor words such as "****."
But a little discretion when swearing is never a bad thing.

It seems to me that there are many "minor" slang words that are generally "acceptable" these days, but there are still many that should be avoided.
A good rule of thumb, is that if you wouldn't use it in mixed company, you shouldn't use it here.
Of course, if you would use some of these words in mixed company, maybe you should re-think that!

Good point. I've had it happen a few times here and have been called every name in the book (not always here so everybody can see it), been gay-bashed by two gay guys (LOL and I'm not even gay), put on an ignore list by somebody I never fought with and read the riot act more than a few times so I'm paranoid now I guess. I see it happening with others too and it pisses me off more than cursing ever could. Lack of compassion, that is. That's the thing that can't get fixed by a moderator. Sorry but real life lately has taught me that compassion goes a long way and I think that goes for off AND on line. There. I'm done. I have no problem cleaning up my potty mouth for this message board. I was pointing out (and it's only my opinion) that I could deal with a few four letter words coz they're just words. The other **** is more of an immediate thing, in my opinion. That's what I meant.
On edit: Only one of the guys gay-bashed me. The other one was just insulting. I just typed that in wrong.

I agree somewhat. I don't like to see it in the thread headers. Because if an adult is sitting with a 7 year old on her lap, she won't want to have to answer the burning question "Mommy, what's a "f*ck*?" Making people type out three out of four letters in a curse word seems rather silly. You can tell what it is and I think even PG-13 films now say the "eff" word aloud. How old do people have to be to post here? :o But really---Why not make it easier for all concerned and just turn on the board's profanity filter. It's got to have one.

Pardon my French, but this is crap.
If you don't like the occasional curse word now and then, tune it out. We're all adults here (well, most of us.)
Why not add one board where you can use all your f-words, talk about sex and allll those other things that might be offensive to some people? With the warning to enter at your own risk?

And about f-words etcetera, I'll just use Dutch cuss words instead, so only Dutch readers will understand. Who won't be offended by it because our culture's kind of different towards that ;)

Wow what's the big deal?
Are you all that married to cursing openly?
I for one could care less - I try to curse as minimally as possible anyway - so this is a helpful reminder.
It's rude, and crude and it makes people sound well - un-intelligent actually. I think there are a plethora of other words that one can choose from - without having to curse. I'm not a prude or anything but geez people - this isn't a big deal
^not completely agreeing. I use cuss words to express some strong negative feelings, as do many. You have to be able to vent that some way, and 'oh golly' wouldn't do if I'm really pissed off.

It's like chef Gordon Ramsey said in People Magazine a short time ago, regading cursing. He said he doesn't do it in front of his kids but in the kitchen you can't say "Oh heavenly days, look at that! I've gone and poured boiling hot grease on my thumb!" Yelling out a hearty M*ther F*CK!!" is just right for that occasion!

ok - but in day to day conversation on th Ledge are people boiling hot grease on themselves? Probably not
These guidlines have been in place for a long time -but now that we have new moderators - mods that spend a good deal more time here - they are charged with making sure that the rules and guidlines are fired....
Not being able to curse is not a big deal - just because it's used so commonly now does not make it ok - I think it's disturbing and sad.
And yes - there are other ways to express anger and frustration than curses.

That never happened before and I just thought with **** or the c-word it should be *uck or *unt or something just so we still have a little class left.
And I am still a minor moderator but they took away the title, I guess that is really confusing. Sorry if it looked like I was just saying stop cursing. I can't say that because I like to curse and sometimes you just have to curse I just thought the extreme words shouldn't be spelled out, and I thought everyone would agree.
Now we have a filter it looks like we won't have to worry about it anymore!
