As for the capitalism thing...I guess I didn't realize there were that many people who were anti-capitalism. There's a good conversation, I guess. That's assuming that we can still present conservative viewpoints here. ;)

Yes, she does. But, that does not make what she says true or even loosely based in fact. Again, Sen. McCarthy was a hero

BTW - I even admit to liking to watch her as she is train wreck to these eyes. I often laugh out loud at her incorrect statements and spin - and I think it is hysterical when people cannot correct her properly.

I understand and I agree. I don't think any of those threads or links should have been locked or deleted, either. If people can post stuff from liberal sites and can post liberal opinion pieces, then people also have every right to post something with an equally conservative bent. Not allowing it kind of stifles good conversation and good discussions.

Having said that, I just think that some of the sarcastic remarks were a bit much. It just seemed like some folks were intentionally trying to get her goat whilst condemning what they thought was bad behavior on her part.

Maybe new to moderating, but not new to the board.

Chris has been on the Ledge for years. She's an intelligent woman. She feels strongly on certain issues just as others feel stongly in their beliefs. If you frequent the ledge it doesn't take long to know how to rub certain members the wrong way.

That being said, I would hope when someone takes on the responsibility of being a moderator, they would be fair to both sides. I also feel that the explanation given as to why threads being deleted was snarky and baiting. :)

Can we let this go?
Not really.

Thanks Jason. We are new at this, maybe deleting the thread was a bit extreme. However, the concern is with baiting and not so much the content of that site. Clearly everyone's gotten their opinions out and we know where everyone stands.
The Indigo Girls Official Site BBS was once a thriving, living, breathing thing with all different kinds of people and all different kinds of discussions. Things around there were almost self-moderated. A new moderator took over and started deleting threads. Pretty soon it led to people being banned, for various reasons. Soon there were direct complaints to the artists' management about how much fan support the band was losing because of the board moderation. Over there, there was a lot of grass roots "street team" support of the IG's concerts, releases and appearances- large groups of fans would literally follow them along for long stretches of their tours.

Because of the moderation of that board, the majority of the core supporters left. The artists intervened and altered things a bit, but it was too late. The board was poisoned and it died. There's only little bits and scraps there now- a burnt-out shell of its former self.

Deleting threads and posts that border on censorship (in my opinion) are not a good harbinger for the life of any forum. We are all grown up enough around here (even the Ledgies under 18 are wise enough as far as I'm concerned) to handle "baiting" or "flaming" or whatever you want to call it. There have been many instances in the past where I have seen certain people go too far and, for the most part, those affected have weathered through it. I'd rather have the forum be too challenging then not challenging at all.

You raise a good point Lisa. The reason that I cannot do that is because as mods, there are some things that we are bound to discuss in private. I've said as much as I can say and would appreciate everyone letting this go. It is nothing personal against any one of you.

Not really.

Thanks Tower. I value and respect your opinion. I can assure that I will most certainly take it into consideration in the future.

When moderating a message board, it takes some time to learn how to achieve a balance between allowing people room to "breathe" and express themselves, and letting things get out of control.

As this is a private message board, not a public one, the moderators have always been asked by Marty to help keep that balance.
We're only human, so sometimes we misstep... but I think we're typically pretty good about handling things in a balanced way.

Rules are in place to prevent complete anarchy.
In recent times, some behaviour has gotten a bit too far from the FAQs that have been in place for five years now, and we'd like to now restore some "order."

Before anyone gets their knickers in a twist, we're not talking about censorship... we're simply talking about more dilligently enforcing those rules as outlined in the FAQs, which everyone agreed to abide by, when they signed up to use the Ledge.

Turns out this was all a big misunderstanding! The link is not a message board, it is an article to which people have replied, not unlike a blog.

I'm glad this could be cleared up. :)

Now let's compare the link ( http://www.sweetness-light.com/archive/cindy-sez-katrina-bushs-fault/ ) to what Sheehan said ( http://www.afterdowningstreet.org/?q=node/2438 ) and see if there are any discrepancies. Hmm, perhaps this is best discussed in a new thread dedicated to it.

This board does not constitute a place of free speech. It is a privately owned board, and the discussions can be moderated at the discretion of the moderators, who are appointed as such by the owners of this board. A majority of Ledgies who participate in political discussions are usually liberal, and many are of a minority group, specifically gay/lesbian. If a posting would personally offend the majority of Ledgies, then it is at the discretion of the moderators to remove such a post. And, it's not like there aren't outlets for conservative thought on the internet. This place, though, probably won't be one of them. Now we could talk about fairness until we were blue in the face. The fact is that there are obviously more conservative minded people in the USA, as all of political, economic, and military power centers are actually controlled by conservatives. Furthermore, posting on the Ledge is a privilege, not a right.

Would I be offended if liberal material was disallowed? Let's just say I would trade places in a heartbeat. I'll be more than happy to give up liberal material being posted on the Ledge if it meant that liberals would control the White House, the House of Reps, the Senate, the Supreme Court, the Pentagon, and a majority of governorships. And, if I felt the need to have a discussion amongst other liberals, I'd save those discussions for another board.

Furthermore, posting on the Ledge is a privilege, not a right. If this place cannot be an outlet for mere conservative thought (not offensive dialogue) at all, then that's sad. It doesn't matter that most of us are liberals. Conservative thought should not be outlawed. I know that many of us are part of the GLBT community. But I'm not so liberal that I just want all the conservatives to be quiet and not say what they think if they think they have valid points and are not defaming minorities. All of those points should be blatantly obvious and I thought I'd never actually have to say them but it appears that some people here do want people who are conservative to simply not present ideas, etc.

Sure, posting on The Ledge is not a right, but I guess I thought the majority had some minute say in things, considering many of us are Supporting Ledgies. I disagree with pretty much every recent development and I don't really intend to hold that opinion back. I've seen a few pretty good arguments for anarchy, IMO. I would totally agree, if it weren't for fact that so much of what is posted as "conservative thought" is just a rehasing of Limbaugh, Hannity, and Coulter that is only done to get a reaction out of liberals. Quoting the likes of Ann Coulter, for most on this board, is offensive by its very nature. Now, if there was logical, rational discussion without name calling, then yeah, I wouldn't have a problem. Well, it seems that he stated earlier that the board is not a place of free speech, and that is supposed to apply to all of us.

Wha??? We don't have free speech at the ledge? My internet home away from home? Where we all can say what we feel?

And yet, this is the first time I've seen you write about being disgruntled. Why?What do you mean? I've been relatively passive-agressive-ish lately. I'm genuinely pissed off about things. I didn't think it would be wise of me to start several threads about it. If things get bad, I'll leave again like I did earlier in the summer. I do enough whining as it is, why are you practically beseeching me to do more?

Even if someone is completely wrong, can they still not ask for a reason why, maybe they had no idea.

Every situation is different. Asking is fine, demanding is another thing all together. Do you see where I'm going with this?

Just how many times can one say that they disagree with Chris deleting that thread last night and state the reasons why? She gave an explanation as to why she did it and yet the same things are being said over and over. And over and over and over. There are only a certain number of times that someone can express their disagreement before it degenerates into nothing but whining and pointlessness for the sake of drama and something to talk about. I realize you don't post on my board, but if you did, you'd see that the moderators almost never delete threads. The one time we did, we conferenced about it. Then we explained why we did it, including PMing all the parties involved. We were happy to do so. So that's what I would do on my own board.

To be fair, I will admit that a couple times I have asked people to stop discussing stuff. This was usually about 20 pages into a thread where all hell had broken loose. lol So my way isn't perfect. But you asked, so... there you have it.

I'm not saying my board's better than the Ledge. I have always said that the Ledge is the definitive Fleetwood Mac board. But this is pretty scary stuff going on and I'm not going to just suck it up.

I'm 100% against censorship here. Liberal or Conservative, NO ONE's post should be deleted because the mod thinks the political leanings of the poster(or links provided) might be offensive to other Ledgies. There might be one or two people here who are under 18, but it certainly seems like nearly everyone else here is of voting age. If you can't take reading a post that isn't up your political alley, well, grow the hell up. Life isn't always about "you".

I think it's completely unfair that Chris is being crucified here for having deleted a couple threads.

I understand the fact that some disagree with her decision, but she made a judgement call based on prior incidents of purposeful baiting, and acted upon it. I know and respect Chris, and I'm certain her intention was not to squelch a conversation simply because it had a conservative bent, as she's being accused of having done.

I do believe at this point that everyone who had an opinion on the matter, one way or the other, has made that opinion abundantly clear.
And, as always, all opinions and viewpoints are taken into consideration. But, at the end of the day, any actions we take are left to the discretion of the moderators in our efforts to make certain that the Ledge guidelines are followed.

Thanks for listening. :)

Well, admittedly, this is a private board, so the moderators are allowed to delete threads at their discretion. However, it has been stated many times that all opinions are welcome here. Therefore, it is not unreasonable for posters to expect a fair standard to be upheld.

Actually, the link browneyes posted was not about whining about being kept down, it was discussing a recent statement by Cindy Sheehan.
I think I know what post was deleted now (where Sheehan blamed Bush for the hurricane), and if I were a moderator, I would have done the same thing. Not for political reasons, but for human reasons. Honestly, who cares about Cindy Sheehan? I think intelligent people realize that she's a mother still mourning the loss of her son. For her, it's the single most tragic event she'll ever know. She's mad as hell, and is blaming W. for everything. Now, you can call her crazy and whatnot, but at her core, she a grieving mother who will never know a moment's peace again in her life. Hasn't she suffered enough? The war and political ideology aside, do you honestly not have enough humanity in you to see that?
Most intelligent people welcome debate. Why don't you?
Frankly, there was nothing intelligent about that debate.

Not according to the ledge rules.... :pWell, I hope you were just being funny, Jimmy, because I don't see anything in the Ledge rules that prevents reasonable people with reasonable viewpoints from fully expressing themselves.

Surely no one is calling for the removal of all rules and guidelines. If so, then we might as well invite back those who have slandered homosexuals and other minorities and ethnicities, as well as those who have repeatedly and excessively belittled, harrassed and threatened other Ledgies.

I doubt that very many people would truly want that.

You've got to be kidding. You advocate Steve's stance that conservatives deserve to be deleted here because they're in power elsewhere?
Point out where Steve said that "conservatives deserve to be deleted here because they're in power elsewhere." That's not what I said at all. What I said was:

1. The Ledge is a privately owned board.
2. The moderators are appointed by the owners of this board, and they have the discretion to moderate discussions on the Ledge.
3. A majority of Ledgies who participate in political discussions are usually liberal, and many are of a minority group, specifically gay/lesbian.
4. Postings that threaten to offend the majority of Ledgies, then it is at the discretion of the moderators to remove such a post.
5. There are other places to have political discussions.
6. Since conservatives are in charge in the USA, it's not like a post on a privately owned internet message board dedicated to a rock band constitutes being held down.

If I thought there could be a normal conversation with conservatives, I wouldn't have an issue here, personally. But, there are two overriding factors for me in which I see a dangerous slippery-slope. First, there are a lot of folks from the GLBT community here. In some cases, this is the one place where they interact with others without feeling threatend. If we're being honest, there are a greater percentage of Ledgies who identify as GLBT than in the general population, so I think we need to have greater sensitivity to what is discussed here. Second, in a lot of (though not all) "conservative discussions," people start rehashing Limbaugh, Hannity, Coulter, etc, after they start feeling comfortable. A lot of times (again, not always) can lead to gay bashing. So, I'm betting Chris is trying to play it safe.

I happen to be for the rights of the GLBT community. Oh, man. First, who appointed you to be the spokesperson for the GLBT? Perhaps you should defer to Hillary on that one, who agrees with me. Secondly, it doesn't make much sense to delete conservative threads because of what MIGHT happen (and although you act like it's always going to happen, that's not REALLY the case. This board rarely gets out of hand.) But it's easier to shut down the debate than deal with it, I guess.

And I know that we have people with conservative leanings on this board who are capable of being respectful of the members of the GLBT community. I know that those conservative leaders are complete homophobes but we don't have to talk about that unfortunate aspect of their personalities. Just read where Harding University, who hired Ann to speak at there college, canceled due to some Alumni complaining that all of her views weren't Christian...this is Ann's latest blog on the situation...

Hey, I've seen in my own family what the death of child does to a person. If her rage, anger, and grief are half of what they've been for my relatives, it's honestly easy for me to see why she's acting this way. In her situation, there is no logic, just basic, raw, primal emotions. See it for what it REALLY is. It's much easier to understand it than to be critical of it. Is it inhumane to challenge her statements? Yes. Not because of her feelings, but because of what it says about us. I'd like to think we're better than that.

You are correct...are speech here is not totally free we are limited.Yet really no more limited than in any other situation in life. We can't just walk into someone's home and do and say whatever we want. We can't stroll into a library, take off all of our clothes, and curse at everyone who walks past us.

There are rules that govern our behaviour in society, and it's no different here on the Ledge.

I've certainly seen message boards that were far stricter, where the webmasters and/or moderators banned users simply because of a personality clash.

Even if I weren't a moderator, I'd say we have a pretty sweet setup here, with a great deal of freedom. Something that is often taken for granted.
