A friend of mine lost her nine month old baby grandaughter this morning. She was found dead- apparently she slept with her parents and the father rolled over and accidentally suffocated her. I am so heartsick right now. When I actually let myself think of this, I start to cry.

These things DO happen. From the way things are sounding, he may be charged with involuntary manslaughter. No punishment will ever match what he will go through for the rest of his life.

Any good thoughts/prayers sent this way would be greatly appreciated.

That is a terrible, horrible thing. My prayers are with your friends and their family. Involuntary manslaughter is unimaginable in this situation. I cannot understand that. We rarely see families having babies nowadays....prosecute the moms that did crack or heroin while they were pregnant and had no regard for their fetuses....not this dad. I'm so sorry.

How horrible! I am so so sorry. I saw a similar case on HBO: Autopsy. A mother had accidentally smothered 2 of her children on 2 separate occasions so it does happen. Babies this small should never sleep in the bed with adults, imo. This is terribly sad and I am so sorry, the father must be beyond comforting. I wish all you guys only the best and I will keep you in my thoughts. Take care ~

How does one's mind deal with something like that? It's beyond imaginable. I am having a hard time dealing with the thought of peoples lives lost to Katrina. It seems every where I turn it gets worse. :sorry:

You know, that's kind of how I'm feeling today. It's really been one of those "count your blessings" type days. I also found out this morning that a girl who works for me had a miscarriage. Another girlfriend was in a hit and run car accident this morning (nothing broken, thankfully). Along with Katrina and gas prices, it feels like the whole world is going insane.

Thanks to all of you for your support. xoxo

I'm extremely sorry to hear of your friend's loss, Janet. :distress:

As I've mentioned, my mother works in a funeral home, and not more than two months ago, they had services for a baby boy who died that exact same way... his parents had him in their bed with them, and the father accidentally rolled over on the infant.

Thank God the coroner decided to rule it an accidental death, so the father wasn't charged with homicide.
I can't imagine having the guilt of knowing you killed your baby, AND having to go to prison for several years because of it. The mental anguish alone would be its own prison.

I sincerely hope the authorities are as compassionate towards your friend's son/son-in-law.

My thoughts and prayers are with your friend and her family.

After a preliminary autopsy, they have ruled it "accidental suffocation". Fortunately, I am a volunteer for Hospice and I have arranged for our bereavement counselor to contact them (at the request of my friend, of course). SO sad.

What do you all feel about co-sleeping?

What an awful thing to happen. I'm so sorry.

As for co-sleeping... both my 2 did sleep in our bed on occasions when they were babies. I remember many a time falling asleep whilst breastfeeding them. It was never a problem for us but hearing something like this does make you think

It is very risky. SO many deaths happen from a mother breast feeding their baby while laying in bed and then falling asleep and suffocating the baby with the breast. I am 100% against putting a baby in the same bed with grown adults for only that reason. If you are on a bed with a baby (playing or whatever) you should NEVER allow yourself to even lay your head down for a moment (to prevent you from accidentally falling alseep) and suffocating the baby.

I can think of a few reasons why parents do it. I can think of only one reason why they shouldn't. The good does not outweight the bad.

It is sad. It is tragic. But it is preventable. Don't do it.

Ok-- I will get off my soap box now.

It's scary to think about. I always breast fed my babies in bed and often fell asleep.

This is my position as well. Some may say that you risk SIDS if you put your baby in a crib but I feel that I'd rather lose my baby to SIDS than know that *I* or my husband suffocated her.
