What service would you provide?? How do you go about medical insurance? Retirement??

Just curious.

Speaking from experience, it sucks ass.

Insurance is super expensive and if you are without support staff, you gotta do it all, which makes you insane at times.

Plus, I deal with crazy clients :D

At one time, I aspired to own my own business (a quaint little bookstore/coffee shop.) But honestly, I don't think I would.

My dad is an independent insurance agent, and because of that, he is technically self-employed and is classified as a small business owner. My mom helps him at the office. We didn't have medical insurance for a long time when I was growing up. Hard to believe....he sold the stuff, but we didn't have any. It was so expensive, they couldn't afford it. Now they have a "major medical plan" and it it is still ridiculously expensive. And they have no formal retirement plan....they plan on working well into their 70s. Plus, they haven't had a vacation in almost 15 years. They're too afraid they'll be behind when they get back. So no.........owning my own business does not appeal to me.

Funny, I've been thinking about this recently. Maybe some sort of store in Australia or New Zealand to cater for all the Japanese immigrants/tourists. And in those countries there's free public health care so that's one less worry. But all the other insurance/tax/legal stuff must be a headache.

Well, I already did. I pay for my own medical insurance.

I always thought I'd be good doing real estate. But after seeing my parents go broke after 20 years of self-employment, I think I'll keep my state job (and pension.)

Health insurance. Good. God. They were paying over $600 a month out of pocket PLUS at least $200 a month in copays for appointments & medications. Not pretty. I will never complain about paying for a portion of my insurance again.

My BF is trying to start giving guitar lessons from our house. I guess that is like a little business. We are decorating the basement like a guitar/rock and roll museum. We have some really cool stuff compined. ANd he has 16 guitars, amps, drums, mixing boards, ect...so if he can round up enough students it could be quite profitable

own business someday in the future (If we arent all blown away) and I will probably be my only employee (I want a world class music store) so I guess I will be covering my own expenses out of pocket (Just like we do now for my worsening medical problems...)

Bookstore/coffeehouse/rabbit shelter... I'd call it The White Rabbit or something...maybe a Watership Down reference...hmmmm

But I'm starting to percolate the idea of trying some freelance writing, which would put me in that same boat. Scary stuff.

Ya know, when I was a teenager, we had this hair-brained scheme: We were going to open a restaruant for women, kinda like Hooters, but we were going to name it Cocks. Have men slightly dressed, waiting tables and tending bar. Our mascot, instead of an owl, was going to be a rooster. I still want to do that, but I'm in Indiana... no hot men here!

I had someone I know start a business, and 2 years later, he's still going nuts. But theres something to be said about being in charge of yourself.
