Did you guys know that the famous Blondie song "Call Me" was originally offered to Stevie Nicks? I heard on some tv or radio show once that Stevie turned it down and Debbie Harry took it on but only if she could rewrite the lyrics. I really can't imagine Stevie doing Call Me, but it would be pretty neat to hear the demo that was offered to her, or if she ever tried her hand at a demo before turning it down.

Anyone know any other secrets about this Stevie Nicks/Geogio Morodor match up that was never meant to be?

Oy. It was not.

The track never had any lyrics to it or anything but a crude synth track to it, and it was originally titled "Monster Man" by Moroder.

I predict Diss will chime in here, and say it was not offered to la nicks, that debbie harry wrote it, etc.

I first read that the instrumental track for what became "Call Me" was originally offered to Stevie, in one of Fred Bronson's "Billboard's Top Hits" books, published about 17 years ago.

Dissy says it's not true though, so....

Because there really was no instrumental track to begin with. The only thing that was composed when Moroder teamed with Blondie was the synth line that's in the song (called "Monster Man"). Debbie wrote the lyrics and the melody, and the band basically composed everything but the synth. I think the whole "being offered to Stevie Nicks" story is kind of exaggerated. If she was ever offered anything, it surely wasn't "Call Me".

You just don't want to think that Debbie might have gotten Stevie's sloppy seconds. ;)

Seriously though, you're right in that saying Stevie was originally offered "Call Me" is a misrepresentation, because people are then going to assume she was offered the completed song, just as they know it. Which isn't true, obviously.

I have wondered though, if Stevie was offered a more finished demo (sans lyrics)... the "guts" of which were then removed, when it was presented to Blondie, who obviously had a different musical style.

Giorgio Moroder typically offered fully formed demos to the vocalists he wished to work with. The nature of his collaboration with Blondie seems to be a rare occurrence. The only other person I can think of that worked with Moroder so closely, to write a song from the ground up, was Freddie Mercury.

to be fair - most artists who are offered something and reject it rarely ever say that out of respect for the person who is second. But, I agree and think La Nicks, while possinbly considered for the theme song in the initial process, was not in the end running for it.

Well, the lyrics had not been written. So, it would have neem more likely that Iovine would have proffered a complted Nicks song like in the other movies. I mean Violet and Blue could have worked with a little tweaking.

They wouldn't use it at all, then (and she wasn't even a solo artist yet). The only two songs used that aren't instrumental are "Call Me" and Cheryl Barnes' "Love and Passion"; two sexy songs. Moreover, AG was released in 1980 and they used La Nicks in Heavy Metal in 1981 and FTARH in 1982. So, its not that far of a stretch, esp. considering much of BD had already been written and demo's years before then

WICYA charted in 1978 :wavey: and correct me if I am wring Iovine produced it and no other member of FM played on it - thus indicating she was solo on it. So, to say she was not emerging as a solo act until BD is incorrect.

Night Wind Sent is one of those songs that, I think, commands attention when you hear it. It's dreamlike and that vocal is otherworldly. I've always thought that it sounded like something Stevie could have written back in the day, minus the fairy/mystical stuff.

Yes, he is. :) How's he getting along with Kathy Griffin, the Messiah?

:laugh::laugh::laugh:

I watched the Live '99 video for a few minutes last night and I don't know how he does it. That Shayla/Union City Blue thing that they do is concert is quite the showcase for him, good lord. To these ears, it sounds like they've increased the pace and tempo of the songs over the past few years, and it's really obvious listening to him drum. Hanging On the Telephone gives me whiplash these days.

Kate met him, too, that lucky girl.

Rules For Living is really fantastic, you'll like it. The lyrics are beautiful, her voice is rich, and it has some of the best guitar work in any of their songs. Great stuff.

I think I'll put it in this weekend. It's time. :D
which album? I have some songs from 3 of her albums (sadly, none from her live album) and they are all Stellar - I'm going to buy every album. Her newest two especially have a lot more "funky" in them. I can send you a sampling if you'd like. She reminds me of Debbie and Stevie, (especially Debbie), in that, you can always tell it's her voice, but there's an incredible amount of variety both vocally and musically. (especially on Mama's Gun, I think). I don't like rap much, but when she puts some in, it's pretty, and of course her lyrics are often insightful, but simple. And I love to dance.

I agree, about the lyrics, although that ethereal high quality that Debs voice can have - well, it's hard to imagine another vocalist. The most quirky and suprising song I love on that album is Boom Boom in the Zoom Zoom room. I was astonished when I heard that, as I had never heard Debbie do jazz style. That song makes me very happy, and is also a difficult vocal from what I can tell. And of course the band - always the band...

I haven't seen the video, as you know, just heard the audio...but obviously I can hear what you are talking about.

Sure, send me something new from her. :D Mama's Gun is the one that I have, I'm going to listen to it tonight.

Love BBITZZR. That one and "Dig Up the Conjo" were so surprising on first listen. I try to sing it, but I can't. The verse after the first chorus is ridiculously hard. And it makes me giggle that it's about anonymous gay hook-ups.

I can send you some of her Jazz Passengers stuff, it's AMAZING and even quirkier than BBITZZR. "Imitation of A Kiss" and "Angel Eyes" are devastating; you won't even believe that it's her. I saw them live only once and they're even better than on the records; it's a lot of improv, which makes for a very entertaining show.

oh, you have mama's gun? nice. I like a lot of the songs on there, all that I've heard. Penitentiary philosophy gets my bun moving (I don't have it now, though) my favorite pretty songs from that are In Love With You and Kiss Me On My Neck (so cute, love it). Didn't Cha Know is great, to me. Green Eyes is funny, starts out a bit slow, gets better. If you didn't already listen to it much, you may not like it that well. I have a feeling it might translate better to girls... It would be hard to argue that it wasn't good, though.

I didn't think about it too indepth (as usual) but I guess I thought it was about all random hookups....

Please do. I love improv, too. Badu has a lot of jazzy sounding improv, I love it (sorry to keep mentioning her, but I have a musical crush right now. You know how that is :D )
I thought you had sent me some before, but I think it was something else, not any of her Jazz Passengers work. She's great at improv, I think. They're all such amazing musicians, including her.

I don't like Blondie. Their lyrics are so campy and repeat over and over and over again. No emotion...her vocals are the same in pretty much every song....that one high note she does....ugh...my poor ears.

The sad thing about Blondie is that most people are only familliar with Heart of Glass, Tide Is High, Rapture and Call Me. Maybe One Way Or Another. Their albums were filled with amazing songs in so many different styles, they really were quite an amazing band.

You know, after starting this thread and remembered the ending of "If I Were You" when she comes in with the "Baby Yo!" part and I can totally hear her going "Call Me!" in that same voice. So now that I think about it, she probably could have done a pretty cool version.

Thanks to everyone how gave info. I've always wondered about this little fun fact. You guys rock! :xoxo:

At the time it was released Stevie would have kicked the **** out of Call Me had she recorded it.

I read the first post and it was about Stevie being offered a song and turning it down
Call Me was the song mentioned .

I have read all 6 pages of this thread and it's mostly about Blondie and Debby Harry, not about Stevie songs... Wht'a up with that?

The only one that I know of is "These Dreams" recorded by Heart
That was supposed to be a song for Stevie, and she turned it down... at least those are the facts as I have heard them.

Maybe there are other songs out there that other Ledgies know about-but that is the only one I am aware of...Hope this answers your question.

I've never heard this but now that you mention it, this is a very Stevie-esque song. I could totally see her doing it. Funny, it's the only Heart song I ever liked. LOL!

Because there really was no instrumental track to begin with. The only thing that was composed when Moroder teamed with Blondie was the synth line that's in the song (called "Monster Man").

Was it the same synth track that was used in the movie?
