I talked to this guy the other day who worked for the highway dept and his whole job was picking up roadkill. to me that's the worst job anyone could have. I'd be curious to see what others think.?

I think that any job that someone works their hardest at - and uses to support their family or themselves is noble and important.

As Dolly Parton says..."somebody's gotta do it"

That said....I think the worst job would be 7th grade teacher :p

Yes, definitely. Podiatry can't be fun & interesting either.

This is gross, but you asked! I used to work w/ a woman whose hubby was a garbageman. He forbid her to serve anything with rice in it during the summer, cuz it reminded him of maggots.

I get pissed at my garbagemen for blocking my driveway w/ the can after they've emptied it, but then I quickly get over it, cuz they have a terrible job....

I think a Mortician/Embalmer is a really disgusting and weird job.

I think it's all about context. After all, several of the "worst" jobs mentioned here carry very high paychecks. Sure, some may not want to be a gyno, but the pay is high. To me the worst job is one with low pay and low satisfaction.

Any job that pays you less than your time is worth. Any job that you dread going to before you even go to bed at night. ANy job where you work hard and are not appreciated for it.

I live your nightmare everyday. That is my job. I think any job where I had to deal with sewage would be the worst job.

LOL, well as a funeral director, I'll disagree. I started working in a funeral home at 16 and thought it was pretty freaking disgusting. Death always had a way of making me queesy. I rarely ever would go to funerals. I'm still not sure what possesed me to apply for a jov there. Then I saw how much respect and care my boss and co-workers treated not only the families but the deceased as well, it changed my mind.

I rarely work with the deceased anymore, but I will when asked. I've even worked my own family's funerals. When my best friend's grandfather died, I prepared him. Strange seeing him naked  but I knew how he would part his hair and what he "looked" like when he was alive, without having to rely on a photo. We received a number of compliments on how much he looked like himself. I often feel like they're in the room with me (weird I know), gives me some comfort.

Sorry for the ramble.

What's your specialty? I'm an RN, too, and I think that disliking the job is a pretty normal thing from time to time....you wear many hats...patient advocate...role model...mentor....leader....follower...vomit catcher...butt wiper...tear dryer...hand holder...healer...physician squasher....physician supporter....everybody's everything. Appreciated usually by patients, hardly by administration, mostly by your co-workers who work in the trenches with ya!

Coroner - seeing the terrible ways that people die.

Landfill workers. Digging though all that trash and stink would be unimaginable.

My job ain't that great - dealing with people in divorce and custody situations and trying to be financially responsible to yourself when people can't or won't pay sucks.

Very interesting ramble at that. I enjoyed reading your post. It is such an intriguing and vital occupation.

My mother also works at a funeral home. She actually went to beauty school, and started working at the funeral home as their resident hairstylist... now she's fulltime staff there and does everything (except, of course, the tasks that only the licensed mortician is allowed to do, such as embalming, etc.).

Let's see.... in middle school, we decided the worst job was to be the one who "cleaned up" everything after the filming of a porno.

So very well said. I have experienced those circumstances too often in my life.

The most disgusting job has to be the people who clean up the site of
a mass murder scene or something almost as grisely. You know, some guy hacks up three people in hotel room. Who cleans it up? That's the worst.

The guy who sits in the tower at prisons to make sure no one escapes. 12 hour days. No tv, no radio, no magazines or books. Just stare at the highway all day long and watch cars go by. I can't imagine anything more boring or that would drive me more bananas. :]

I love all these types of shows that come on TLC or A&E. The true crime stuff. And there was a show pretty recently about these types of jobs. People who clean and disinfect crime scenes. And this very often does involve scraping brains from the walls. But they act very "matter of fact" about it. Or maybe "brain matter of fact"? As for bad jobs, I'd think anything involving body waste or bad smells would be something I personally could never do. A tiny diaper sends me heaving! So I admire all these people to whom this stuff is just not too unpleasant.
