View Full Version : Does Stevie ever leave the house?

The reason I ask is because I see lots of candid pictures of most celebs, but not Stevie. I mean, I have never seen Stevie wielding a Starbucks cup with a bunch of body guards surrounding her... I have never seen any pics of her shopping or out and about on the streets of Hollywood or New York. You know, pictures we see of almost all celebrities. What is the deal? Do the paparazi just not care about taking Stevie's picture? Or does she just not leave her house/hotel room?

Do the paparazi just not care about taking Stevie's picture?
I think that's probably the case. She's not a huge pop culture icon the way Jennifer Aniston or Madonna or a lot of movie stars are. Paparazzi are not going to get paid big bucks by the Enquirer for a photo of Stevie sitting at a sidewalk cafe as they might for Cameron Diaz or Jennifer Lopez or Lindsay Lohan. There are plenty of candid shots of Stevie out and about back in the day when FM were at the height of their popularity, but I've only seen a few photos of her from recent years that look like they were taken at an airport or on the street somewhere. Also, though we love her and would know her anywhere, I don't think she's all that recognizeable to the average person these days, especially if she dresses down and and keeps it low key when she's out shopping and stuff. I'm glad she gets her privacy in that respect.

Stevie is way too faaaabulous for the grocery store .(Yeah, she has said she doesn't do her own grocery shopping or sends people to the store for her in a few interviews. However, there was a Street Angel era interview where she made a comment about going to the store in her gypsy regalia with the boots and all and people being sort of surprised that she is that way in real life. Anyone remember that? Maybe she used to shop. Or was just looking for an example of an "everyday" place to illustrate the point that she really dresses that way offstage too.)

Totally agree.
And I'll add: I know someone who has hung with her, and she told me Stevie is completely anonymous and unrecognizable as "the extra much more fabulous Stevie Nicks" when she is out shopping and stuff. No ribbons and bows and lace, big sunglasses, etc.

I think it comes down to the fact that Stevie does not let her publicist know every time she visits a hospital or something like that (eg:the recent hospital visit in DC). Publicists will notify the media of their clients whereabouts for photo ops. Stevie is most definately an A list celebrity. However I dont think she socializes all that much or does the movie premeire route. Also she is not a media whore. Someone like Madonna lets her publicist know every time she farts.

Which is what got her in trouble with the IRS a few years back. She claimed her "stage attire" as a tax write-off, but, the IRS countered, saying that she wears her "stage attire" while off-stage, so her "stage wardrobe" cannot be claimed.

I definitely agree with you TIffany, especially on the dressed down part. I've seen pictures of her without her makeup on, and I have to look twice to make sure its her. It's not that she looks bad or anything, but just that the makeup makes her look different. I also like your pount about the privacy thing. Everybody needs it, especially her :D

I've read an interview with Stevie where she said that she likes Pier One and one time she was there she was picking out perfume bottles and a young kid says to her " You look familiar to me..." so she says back to him "I look familiar to you because I am familiar to you!". I always thought that was a weird thing to say, but SO Stevie! Wouldn't be suprised if that makes it onto an album as a lyric.
Here's a good reason why we don't see paparazzi snaps of Stevie in everyday life shopping or going to Starbucks or going to the spa, etc. Stevie's gone on the record in a zillion interviews that she sleeps late, not waking up until the late afternoon and stays up all night until past dawn. So being a 'nightbird', there's probably less of a chance of catching her doing daytime things. Her assistants can do that stuff for her. I think she's of a different generation anyway. Maybe the Lindsey Lohans, Paris Hiltons, and Olsen Twins of the world today want to be independent and drive their own cars and go buy their own stuff and act like everyone else except be really rich and famous- but I think Stevie is cut from more of the 70's cloth where rock star's bought castles and lived like kings and had entourages that did everything for you. Somehow I don't see Robert Plant or Mick Jagger going to Mcdonald's by themselves and buying a 'Big Mac'. Same goes for Stevie, she's just 'better' than that. I also think she understands the Dietrich/Garbo/Monroe/Kelly glamour mystique quite well, and for that reason is rarely caught in public not looking or behaving like a 'star'.

I happen to remember that the exact quote was,
"That's because I am familiar to you"
I never understood it either.
I THINK maybe what she meant is that there's something about him,
the way he thinks, etc., the way he is "spiritually," that caused him
to vaguely know who she was, even if he couldn't place it.
And, of course, to throw him for a "Stevieloop" and maybe freak

She uh, had a blue Mercedes in the late '70s that she drove -
I believe I've read that she was quite PROUD of it, too!
There's a picture of her with it floating around - buckinghamnicks.net,
maybe.
There's also a white Jeep that was recently auctioned for charity or
on e-Bay or something,
and she also had bought a red Porsche the day after she saw
"Risky Business" - so yeah, she's definitely driven.
But she's said in interviews that she "let her license expire" because
she was too busy touring, etc.
She uhh, also may have been encouraged too. . .

Just because some 26 year olds don't know who a celebrity is does not diminish their clout in the industry. Annette Benning is most definately an A-list celebrity and Im sure a lot of 26 year olds don't know who she is. Same goes for celebrities like Glenn Close, Faye Dunaway and others. They are poets, and yet they are priests of nothing, but they are legends.
Im sure P. Didddy or whatever he calls himself now, would rather have Stevie or any of the above mentioned figures at his party than say Simon from American Idol whom almost every 26 yo with a television knows.

Quote from La Nicks, Rolling Stone 1999/2000:
"GOALS FOR THE NEW CENTURY: I'd like to be able to beam places. First thing first, though: my driver's license ran out in 1978, and I never got it renewed, because I never went anywhere alone. We got famous so fast, I just didn't get in a car and go to the market anymore. I miss driving around and listening to music, but now I have to take the test over, Maybe that should be my New Years resolution."
I think the only place La Nicks drives is.....
If it's me that's driving you to this madness
Then there's one thing that I'd like to say
Take a look at your life and your lovers

This reminds me of this story from the Keith Olsen Q&A...it had me laughing for three days. I can sooooo picture it.
"First of all, thank you for taking the time to do this. Ok, what is your best memory and one of your funniest memories of working with Stevie and Lindsey? (Erin, Michigan, USA)
The best memory was when Stevie and Lindsey lived with me in my little Coldwater Cyn house in LA.... I was going to NYC to mix a live concert in Central Park for the James Gang.... Stevie and Lindsey's car had blown its transmission... so I lent them my car.... only if they would drive me to where the Limo was picking up the band at 5:00am .... and when I returned 3 days later pick me back up.... You have to imagine the next part... Stevie in a long heavy cotton robe... trying to drive a stick shift car... where the end of the robe got caught up in the pedals.... As she drove away (after dropping me off) the lead singer for the James Gang said " Keith, you'll never see that car again.." Well I said that he was crazy-- she only had to go 1.5 miles.....
I flew to NYC and went directly to Central Park.... got to the hotel at around 11:00pm EST... had a message that said call home ASAP!
I called ... Lindsey got on the phone... and told me everyone was OK, but the car was in my neighbors bedroom....... Stevie had parked the car, pulled on the brake...(1 Click), and went back to bed... the car rolled down the hill, flipped end over end 3 times and was hurled through the air and into the bedroom of the house below me..... Come to think about it... I think Stevie still owes me for that car.... and then with 30 years of interest ...... "

That has been my favorite Stevie story since I read it back when Keith answered his questions! It always gives me a laugh. I think the best and cutest part of the entire thing is how Stevie let (or made) Lindsey tell Keith what happened.
