About the hell thing...I have expected Pat Robertson to say that God sent Hurricane Katrina straight to New Orleans to kill off all the homos there. Obviously the city didn't wind up taking a direct hit but I really, really wouldn't put it past that moron to say something like that.

In almost all societies I can think of, there has always had to be a group to scapegoat. For America, it was Communism for a long time, with gay people behind that mania. Now that that is gone, gay people are at the front. technically I think people who bash gay people are more scared than anything. They don't understand it...don't know anyone (or is CLOSE with anyone) that is gay...and so therefore just brush it off as.."oh...well..they are evil and should be punished" . i know someone like that. . .actually *used* to know is more accurate. she went through a lot of personal drama in her life, became very religious as a result, and then poof, decided that homosexuality was the root of all evil. it's just easier for some people to project their frustrations about life and self onto some abstract notion ("gays are corrupting the moral fabric of our nation!") than to deal with the complexities of every day existence.
