I don't want to lose hope; I don't want to believe that it's all going to be gone, but at the same time, I feel like posting some pics of NO that I've found online.
Here's one of the cathedral in Jackson Square-

Here's part of the inside of the Virgin Records store in the French Quarter. I've spent many hours wandering around in there.

I visited New Orleans in 1987 at the age of 16. I have fond memories of the city, but especially gobbling those delicious 2 dozen Oysters.

I took a few photos when I was there for a very short time 2 years ago. I can't seem to find the CD that they are stored on, however. If I find them I will post them.

My husband, my parents, and I just went to New Orleans this summer. I just loved it, and it is my parents' favorite place. My husband and I had planned on going back the weekend that University of Tennessee plays LSU, but I bet they won't have it cleaned up by then. :distress:

I predict most of the city will be up and running within two weeks. The individual, private damage will take longer though. For example, it is highly likely my brother's house is under ten feet of water and he will not know it for a few days as they evacuated to my parents' house 100 miles away to the west in Lafayette. So, they will have to deal with that. But, they have their lives and insurance.

Thanks to all for commenting on this thread and if anyone has pictures of New Orleans to share, I would love to see them! :)

You are welcome and I am glad you are safe!!!!!!!!
The good thing is the insurance companies are very, very organized in this type of situation and can get people checks to begin the repairs the same day as the inspection. Many times, the ins. adjusters have already been by the house prior to the calls. The problem is getting a contractor there in a reasonable amount of time. But, it usually is a relatively smooth process.

Does insurance cover this kind of damage? Over here if your house was damaged by natural disasters it's usually not covered by insurances :S

that is being shown of New Orleans from helicopter is truly shocking, 80% of the city is flooded. Houses are burning and there is no way for the fire dept's to reach em....Now Martial Law has been just declared in N'Orleans.
Sad...Truly sad.

I wonder what Google is in Gaelic;)
Just came back from my holiday in Scotland, where the Gaelic namesigns are twice as long as the English ones. And so funny to hear bbc gaelic radio.. totally incomprehensible (since it's clearly not related to anglo saxon languages) but then familiar words pop up like "Elton John" etc...

Natural causes are covered to a point. If a tree or power line falls on your house, you're covered. But in general, you have to have flood insurance on top of your homeowner's to be covered.

Flood insurance is quite expensive.

I wish I could get some tapes in gaelic and/or a willing gaelic speaker to tutor me, preferably good looking :D
One of the Supervisors at my work brought me back a beautiful signed/numbered Plaque with my Family name history on it, as well as numerous post cards, a couple Irish newspapers, a deck of cards with pix of Ireland, and 2 cd's of pictures. I am SO wishing I was rich right about now, I'd be traveling :)

Wow, I'm sorry to hear about your brother's unfortunate situation. Hopefully, he will be one of the lucky ones when it comes to the damage, and at least, he is safe and sound. :)
One of my mom's best friends lives in New Orleans. My mom has been worried about her, because she hasn't been able to get ahold of her. My mom is pretty sure that she and her husband evacuated though. I'm glad for that.

Thanks - fortunately for him, he and his family have two free places to dtay (my and her parents) and built in sitters for the two kids (three and 8 months) when it comes time to go back to work and face what needs to be faced on the homefront. That is such a blessing and I hope many are in that situation. Could you imagine being hit with a hotel bill for two weeks and possibly not being paid for that time

They will have the levee's sandbagged in the next day or so. The pumping stations can pump that water out in a few days, if that long. They are already working to restore the power in the dry areas like the CBD and the Quarter, which are the city's lifeblood. Also, they are beginning to remove some of the downed trees on major streets and will probably have most of that done in the next week. The main concern right now is the water main break - that cannot be repaired from what I have seen until the water recedes. So, I think by next Friday, many will have returned to face whatever faces them. But, certainly many will not be able to do so, esp. in the 9th Ward and in Harvey, which are sort of off of the beaten path in the big scheme of things.

What do you mean with 'scottie'? Some kind of Nessie?

SWOON - Scotties on the glenn - thanks for the FYI and I am glad you had a good time. Scotland is indeed beautiful!!!!!!!
And Mull in particular :) (sorry for polluting this thread even more with Scotland talk ;) ) The day I spent there, everything was just right: the weather (one of three sunny days I had there in two weeks, lol), walking through the landscape which is the best way to enjoy nature, having a very yummy slice of chocolate cake at the castle.. the sight from Duart castle, you could see as far as the Ben Nevis even.. lots more we did, but ended the day with a meal in a local pub where some locals wearing friggin' kilts for real and not just for us tourists played some melancholic folkmusic .. damn it I want to go back!
