Okay, so my friend and I had tickets to go see Tom Petty last night. She had made arrangements to have her boyfriend drop us off at the venue while he and his friend occupied themselves elsewhere. She and I are the only employees at the moment at the veterinary hospital where I work, so we made our boss close an hour early.
As we were trying to get out the door, he kept trying to chit chat with us about god-only-knows-what. And we're trying to be nice about it, but we're in a hurry. So we get a late start to go pick up the guys from my friend's house.
She had specifically told her boyfriend to bring his cell phone so that she could call him when the concert was over, but being the idiot that he is... he forgot. So after hitting about every damn red light possible in town and nearly missing a couple of turns (Speeding across four lanes of traffic at about 90 mph to get to an offramp is not fun!) and having to listen to the guys yack on and on about VIDEO GAMES, we arrive at the ampitheatre one hour late. We find our seats quite literally just as The Black Crowes finish their set.
So then we had about an hour of people watching. Petty draws some real freaks. And of course I get stuck next to the drunken idiot who kept spilling beer all over me and himself and asking us repeatedly where we were from. He also kept going on and on about how wonderful our seats were. (We had eighth row, but because of the way the seats were arranged there weren't any other people in front of us and we had a very clear view of the stage.)
The show finally ended sometime around 11:00. We bought some t-shirts and headed out front to meet the guys. Her boyfriend was pissed off because he'd shown up at about 10:00 to pick us up (which wouldn't have happened if he'd brought the damn cell phone... but it was somehow our fault that he had to wait).
As we're starting off towards the car, he has the sudden realization that he doesn't have the car keys. He'd locked them in the freakin' car and the car was STILL ON. Making matters worse, one of the front tires was very nearly flat and we had no spare. So after a lot of cussing and yelling we ended up racing across the parking lot to hunt down a towtruck.
He slim-jimmed the lock for us to the tune of $40 (which her boyfriend so chivalrously let her pay for) but had no air tank to inflate the tire. We asked him for directions to the nearest gas station and ended up getting not-so-accurate directions. We get on the road and all the guys can think about is trying to get home. Meanwhile my friend and I are cussing at them to just find the ****ing gas station so we can inflate the tire. We ended up driving back and forth in the middle of nowhere trying to figure it out. We finally got her boyfriend to pull over so we could ask a police officer for directions to the gas station. We tell him which way to go and he starts arguing with us that the gas station is in the wrong direction (we had to head north to get there, home was south). Ugh! There was no getting home if we didn't get air in that tire. One step at a freaking time! Long story short - we got there late. we had to deal with morons (lots of them, mostly male). And we didn't get home until nearly 2 a.m. I have to be at work at 7:30 this morning.
The show? Was fantastic. Absolutely stunning. Newfound respect for Mike Campbell, Benmont Tench, and Scott Thurston who all blew me away (never really paid them much attention before. Don't know why). Lots of hits, a couple of great covers, not a dull moment. If they tour again next year I simply must see them again.
