I know this has been discussed before, and I don't think it ever happened..but seems to me it would work.. They said on the news that gas prices will not go down unless there is a sudden drop in demand, so why can't everyone get together on one day and try to drop the demand?
I've been gettign this message from everyone :
"Dont Buy gas on September 3rd!!!!
Boycotting the gas company will decrease the price dramatically. Ive checked into it and if over half the US didnt buy gas for 1 day, the gas companys would be close to bankrupcy!!! So Lets show them how to lower gas prices. So repost this to all your friends. We have to get the word out. Its NATIONAL DONT BUY GAS DAY!!!
So repost it!!!
And yes
GAS PRICES SUCK"

I'm IN. It's not only afffecting the auto probs, my electricity bill has gone up about 50% this summer. When was the last time they raised minimum wage? How are the senior citizens keeping up? They use their entire paycheck/ss check for meds, but may not be able to continue picking them up 'cause they can't afford the gas to get there!

I wish they would do that over here.
Petrol prices are insane, I payed 1.34 euro last Monday per LITER. That's about the same in dollars.
The thing that I'm curious about is why the prices in The States are so low, you pay about 60 eurocents per LITER.
I've always been able to manage on a budget of 40 euro's a month on petrol, but I think if this keeps on going I have to spend some more. Driving less is difficult since I have to drive to work.

It won't, this has gone around in the past and according to snopes.com won't do a thing. However, if we all boycott Exxon Mobile and get gas elsewhere that *might* do something.

boycotting gas probably wont do a damn thing.... people need to start buying hybrids... its the only way for consumers to keep gas consumption low... look to Toyota and Honda to start the trend (actually, they already have)

I looked into it when I got my new car. They were at least $30,000. There is no way in hell I could afford one of those. I can't even afford the car I have and it was almost have that price.

J.D. Power Associates has reported that the advertised fuel-saving of hybrids is greatly inflated by the manufacturers, anyway. The EPA even agrees. Another interesting thing is that because of the extra weight that hybrids carry, they consume more fuel when being driven on flat country roads in comparison to regular cars. Hybrids are great, but it's still going to take a long time before they're truly effective. I believe that Toyota said they're a good four or five years ahead of the other companies in terms of hybrid technology development.

Yes but the problem with that is I don't have Exxon Mobil out here. I say let them jack the price up to $5 a gallon and let the chips fall where they may. That's what it's going to take to wake people up in this country. Hit them in the pocketbook and then something will get done.

Well yes but this country is huge with no real centralized system of transportation in many of its major cities, not to mention the vast heartland of America which is less populated.
We also buy our oil in much larger quantities so based on that we know that our gas should be less expensive. What it boils down to is we are getting gouged with these gas prices because our president and his friends are lining their pockets with the money from the oil. Just do a Google search and see how the profits of US oil companies have skyrocketed in the last couple of years.
What is disastrous for our economy also has a ripple effect on the economies that are tied to ours.

Did you see that piece CNN had on earlier about how gas prices are affecting middle America? I almost choked on my beverage.
They picked this housewife and mother of who the hell knows how many spawns, put her on camera, and let her moan and bitch and cry and weep her exasperated little self into a tizzy by explaining how, because of gas prices, she can no longer take her children to the store with her because they'll ask for more new toys and she won't be able to afford them.
Then, the real kicker: she drives an SUV. I swear on my grandmother's ashes, I just about laughed so hard and loud that the wench heard it thousands of miles away and her eardrums popped. Not that she can go to the doctor to have them looked at, she has to fill her gas tank instead. Come Christmas, I just know that she'll be diving into Salvation Army bins at three in the morning to get the first Barbie that she can find with all of the limbs still attached. Woe is me, the poor owner of an SUV.

exactly!! minimum wage is not going up with the cost of living- did you know that federal minimum wage has not gone up one penny in almost 8 years? back then, eight years ago, i was in high school and worked part time and could fill up my gas tank for about $15. less than three hours' work. NOW, my tank fills up for about $42... which, if i was still making minimum wage, would be about 8 hours of work. 8 hours!

yeah but Pip, what's your minimum wage there? 4.85 gbp/hour? that equals about 8.76 US dollars per hour... right? i just did the math, and you filling up for 40 pounds (72 american dollars) compared to your minimum wage, is exactly the same as me spending $42 for my tank of gas with our minimum wage at $5.15/hour. your gas tank costs 8.22 hours worked for a minimum wage worker... and my gas tank costs 8.16 hours of work for a minimum wage worker. my point is that you guys may pay more than we do, but you also make more money than we do. but it equals out, so we all have the same right to bitch and moan as the next person.

I am sooo glad I don't work at a gas station anymore. Though I do reacall 5 years ago when I did and gas went down to like 89 cents, now there be some happy customers! Now I'm not the smarterest, and I don't doubt that there would be some reason this wouldn't work, but what if instead of just boycotting the gas people boycotted the reason for the gas? I mean like what if every one picked a weekend to stay home instead of going out. They wouldn't need to fill up the night before because they wouldn't be going anywhere.

Most of Citgo's oil comes from Venzuela, not the Middle East. Chavez wants to provide cheap oil for the lower income classes in the US. If he were to lower the price of gas via Citgo, the other oil companies would be forced to follow suit. It's part of the reason our current government wants to off him so bad.

Wow--that is interesting, I will have to keep this in mind!
By the way, whoever said hybrids are ugly: I guess it's a matter of opinion. I have a friend who owns a silver Toyota Prius, and people are always asking him wherever he goes, "ooh, that's a cute car, what is it?" and stuff. It's also quite popular with the environmentally conscious celebrities for whatever reason, LOL.
