View Full Version : Why doesnt every gay or straight person love Stevie?

Of course I'm sort of Joking there, not everyone has to love Stevie, but I wanted to share a story with y'all. My current boyfriend doesnt get my passion for Stevie, and it has created problems between us. I've definitely made up my mind that once this relationship ends, I WILL NOT enter into one again unless at the very least this person understands my interest in Stevie. Maybe there's one out there somewhere, LoL, until then, it's just me and my girl I guess..... and there's nothing wrong with that at all.

No, I mean, he's a good person, he really is, but he just doesnt understand how I feel, and thats a problem for me. Some people might say I'm selfish, but I shouldnt have to compromise myself for anyone. Am I nuts?

my bf was quick to realise that my fasination with stevie was a huge part of his life, therefore he made it part of his, and in my opinion, stevie has a style that anyone can appreceate, unless there one of those people who have a passion for NOT liking her, and those, well..i dont get involved with at all, but i mostly keep my stevie fasination between me and stevie, and if people wana join in, great for them

Sadly, you usually have to compromise a bit in relationships. And, if both sides do it, they work much better.
Compromising Stevie? well....depends. do you force him to listen to her? If so, bad.
Do you play it occasionally while he's in the house, while also listening to whatever music he wants? Not so bad...
Do you talk about her constantly? bad - and boring, probably, to your BF.
see, kind of like that....
IN my experience, someone who doesn't love Stevie never will. They might like a song or two okay, but that's about it. So you may have to compromise. But, you're in luck, the chances of a gay man being into Stevie are probably higher than me ever meeting a straight man who likes her.

YEs those are good points. I guess I would have to say that maybe I could compromise a little myself too, but at the same time, I just dont feel that he will ever understand how I feel. I try to do and listen to other things once in awhile, but sometimes it's hard to look at yourself objectively.

Read my additional edit.
Also, lots of people just don't like how Stevie's voice sounds, so I doubt that she has a style that "anyone" can appreciate.

Am I nuts?
Yes.
I am really into Stevie's music, but I'm not really into her. That being said, my love of music does not interfere with my relationship. When I decided to go to Vegas (sucking into the hype thinking she was gonna pull out "The Highwayman", etc...), I invited my partner to go and he said yes. If he had said no, I probably would have gone on my own and he most likely would have been okay with it. Relationships are all about compromise. If you're into Stevie more than you're into your relationship, either the relationship is not all that it's cracked up to be, or you're cracked  .
I would never jeopardize a good relationship for an icon.

It's only music, no sense in ruining an otherwise good relationship because of it. People simply have differing tastes, it's not a big deal.

Yes thats right, but at the same time, the partner shouldnt be jealous of that either, but again, I'm sure I'm probably somewhat at fault for the situation as well.

Is there nothing/no one your bf is obsessed with/passionate about? I'd much rather he understand the reason why I liked someone than share the opinion.
For example, my last long-term was obsessed with Madonna and Erasure. Me: Stevie and Eurythmics. At first there was some turntable & CD-player conflict, but eventually we grew to share each others' interests somewhat because we started to look for the "why" in the equation. Why did I burst into tears the first time I heard "Gold & Braid" over a stereo VCR hookup (after having listened to it in TV mono for 15 years)? Why could he never listen to "Oh Father" all the way through?
I never forced Stevie on him & vice-versa. But after a while, he would play her music because he liked the effect it had on me - it made *me* feel good - and in turn, himself.
I guess what I'm trying to say is - if the guy you're dating doesn't understand the passionate behavior, and isn't similarly obsessive about anything (music, video games, sports, etc.), then who or what you're passionate about is really irrelevant. Dump him for someone with a few more loose screws. ;)

My husband finds my obsession with Stevie amusing. His style of music is quite different, but we don't like, fight over the CD player or anything. In the ten years we've been together, we came with me to one Stevie show and one SYW show. He had a great time, but he probably wouldn't listen to her music alone in the car, etc. I would NEVER put my fandom before a relationship! I think if your love of Stevie intereferes with your relationship, you may want to re-think your level of fandom. Or, maybe you'll meet your soulmate at a Stevie show someday, and you won't have to worry about it!!! :) :)

I had one relationship with a guy that adored Stevie like I do and my current, who could give a flip.
I actually prefer it this way. Whereas everything I did concerning Stevie, I had to include the other guy, now it's more personal becuase it's just me. She's part of my 'Me Time.'
Tom and I have things we share, but Stevie is not one of them and we're both ok with that, in fact we prefer it.

I've been Stevie obsessed since 1982 after a dear friend gave me Bella Donna but before Mirage was released and I've only had two relationships in my life. In my first relationship, the group of friends that I inherited from my boyfriend thought Stevie was neither cool nor relevant - it was the eighties and these people were certain she was washed up and on her way out. And my boyfriend was a smart and talented guy who clicked well with me except that he was pretty much a Stevie HATER and often made fun of Stevie to get me going. All his jokes were out of a serious disrespect for her either because of her voice, her hair (when you're gay making fun of somebody's hair is a serious attack) or her clothes. Needless to say the relationship didn't last more than a couple of years but he and I and many of the others have remained friends. I can tolerate any of my friends not liking her and bashing her to get me going but for me to have a relationship with somebody, I need to be able to bask in the glory of Stevie in front of them (i.e. watch videos, go to concerts, work on my doll) because she is a huge source of joy and pleasure in my life.
When I met my current partner, he told me he had an audio casette of himself singing along to the Wild Heart because he thought he could do a good imitation of her (he can't). Although he's always thought of her as a unique artist he cannot hold back a wisecrack anytime I mention her, and with him I don't mind one bit. In fact his jokes are the funniest I've ever heard about Stevie. Always picking on how many men she's slept with, or how hard she's partied. Changing lyrics to her songs (i.e. "I can't wait, I can't wait" becomes "I gained weight, I gained weight", "bit of gold and braid" becomes "bitter, old and gray")...he's hysterical. But most importantly he loves that I love Stevie - he doesn't have to love her the way I do but he has to understand how I feel about her and accept that she's an obsession that'll be a part of both our lives. And I guess he does because he's been with me at every Stevie or Fleetwood Mac concert I've attended since we've met almost 15 years ago - and I haven't missed a tour the entire time.

Color me cynical because I am. I am also a sexist, but that's another story. Anyone that I am involved in a deep relationship with must have the same sense of humor, like the same music, and share my political philosophy. Without that, we would argue all the time. Love is all find and good but it is compatibility that makes or breaks a relationship. I can't see myself being with someone who doesn't appreciate my humor, my music and my political philosophy.
I am open to having an unconventional relationship with someone, but as far as living together and sharing a life, they need to love Stevie, laugh at everything from the Blue Collar guys to Chris Rock and be able to discuss politics in depth without wanting to kill me or the other way around.

I don't ever assume or even hope that any guy I'm going to meet is going to love Stevie Nicks the way I do. Or even Fleetwood Mac. But as long as he accepts it about me, and loves me a little more for my little quirkiness, that's good enough for me.
I did date a guy who made fun of me for it - I told him it bothered me. He didn't stop. I dumped him. (Okay, there were other reasons, too)

I thought that was a big span? Okay, how about Ellen to Steve Martin? I like just about everyone in comedy. I thought going from Blue Collar to Chris Rock was a big leap. I guess I really am out of it.

My boyfriend doesnt get it. We have always had so many things in common, really the opposite sex version of each other. But, in the same way my eyes glaze over when he starts talking about his new guitar pedal, his glaze over when I talk about Stevie Nicks. Its not that I'm obsessed and need "crazy fan" therapy or anything, but I am passionate about what I love. I know its "only music" but if you are the sort of person who is deeply passionate about music then its important to be able to understand and appreciate each others tastes and if you dont, I cant understand how two people could get along on a day-to-day level. It would be wonderful to be with someone who wants to listen to Bella Donna as much as I do, and who notices when I quote lyrics in regular conversation (I cant help it, I just think that way!). But, I also want to be with someone who plays air guitar in dingy rock clubs whenever they hear Metallica. There in lies the compromise we make for love. I dont even know what I'm on about now.......probably that if you love someone, dont let a musical passion ruin it, but if the relationship doesnt feel right, then it probably isnt.

Kim and I are equally love Stevie, so I'm in good shape. :D (thank God) But there are other things that we don't have in common - like watching football. I love it, and she dreads it when the season starts. But as long as I keep her well-stocked with magazines she's pretty cool about me watching my 4-hour games on sundays! ;) Just gotta keep 'em busy with something else sometimes while you do your thing.

I don't need a guy to like Stevie. The last real boyfriends I have had all did. 1 had never heard of her, and I converted him. Another has liked her forever, not fanatically, even though he saw the Rumours tour ! Another was a casual fan who ended up pretty into it and went to a number of shows with me. It isn't crucial though. I'm gonna like her anyway.
However, I doubt I could date a guy who liked rap and/or techno. Not if I ever had to listen to either for more than 10 seconds anyway.

I'm really fortunate. I met someone who loved my John McVie bass player joke the first night we met (he is a bassist too), and and was happily amazed to discover within days that had a small winged heart tatoo on his right shoulder (not Stevie related, just a 'coincidence', but still - I knew right then I had the right ONE) that looks exactly like a pendant I own..
He sat through all my million Mac/Stevie videos with me in those first weeks, and then gave me his vinyl copy of Bella Donna ... analyzed Rumours with me endlessly.. got me, even though we were so broke every time - to three SYW shows.. let me hang photos of Stevie all over our house (also a white rythym-tech tambourine on the living room wall, lol!)
And the best of all - we got married a couple of months ago and had a Stevie inspired wedding with winged hearts everywhere as the theme, ceremony songs "Without You", "Stephanie" and "Crystal". :o

Any relationship involves one measure compromise and one measure of acceptance. Once you let something get in the way of a healthy relationship, it becomes a problem, whether it's your listening to Stevie or your boyfriend's reaction to Stevie.
I don't need a boyfriend to fawn obsessively all over Stevie, though that certainly wouldn't be a hindrance. I do need someone to at least let me indulge in listening to her without making it feel like I'm committing a crime. That said, I seriously doubt I'd get into a relationship with someone who tries to get me off Stevie.

I've dated a guy who couldn't care less about Stevie, two who "kinda" liked her, and a couple that were big fans.
Joshua, of course, is in the latter category.
It's never really been important to me whether the guys I've dated liked her or not, just as long as they respected the fact that I like her... because I offered them the same respect for the things they liked.
It was funny, because when I was dating Michael (the one who didn't care for Stevie), he was a HUGE Backstreet Boys fan. So we indulged in each others' obsessions.
Comedy Central (or was it E!?) was airing Stevie's SNL episode one night while we were dating, and as I was watching, he woke up and rolled over, squinted at the TV, asked, "did you find a show with Stevie on it?"
I smiled and said, "I sure did!"
He chuckled that "only you" kind of laugh, and then rolled over and went right back to sleep.
With Joshua, it's completely different... we're both so into her, and I have to say it's really fun to share that with someone you love.
We rave about the same things and nitpick the same things. :D

I was shocked and amazed to see severe Gay bashing on a so-called "Stevie Fan"s site. I won't even credit it here with a link (eMail me at

I think it all comes down to balance and being with someone you click with overall. Before I came out, I was married for a while and I drug my wife to see Stevie or the Mac whenever they came round. And she never bitched, she came to love them as well on a lesser level. BUT, I also went on two day road trips shopping with her to find the perfect pair of shoes too. So it all equals out.
Now, the guy I'm seeing "gets it" because he's always been into John Mellencamp since he was a little kid, like I was with Stevie. So this summer, we both got what we wanted and within a month of each other, we saw both of them. It was awesome watching him go to his "special place" when Mellencamp performed cuz it's the same place I go with Stevie.
It's jus like paying the bills or takin out the frickin trash, ya gotta give and take.
