I've been on here now for like 4 months and I've noticed some people that are very opinionated, and here's the deal with me, as long as someone doesnt attack someone else personally for a view they might hold, nothing really bothers me, because that's why we live in America, you have a right to your opinion!!! I'd be curious as to what others think on this subject.

I'm with you on this one. It's frustrating on forums like this when people think disagreeing with someone means bashing a person. It doesn't.

I like seeing other opinions, and really don't mind if folks don't agree with me.

I agree..I'm very opinionated, but I appreciate all opinions (however that does not mean I will not attack your OPINION!) lol

I believe that people should be able to just 'agree to disagree' if they don't see eye to eye on a subject. Expressing your opinion in a respectful way and trying to bully someone into seeing it YOUR way is entirely different. So, I agree with you! This world would be entirely boring if we all thought the same. ;)

Agreed!

I just in general do not agree with 89% of the Chit Chat forum, but I am never hostile about expressing any of my opinions at all. I have never even been given a "nasty" reply or anything like that. Im just happy most of us know how to get along, and respect each others boundaries. Just ask Dissention...we are oil and water, but we get along great, and I consider him a great person and friend.

I've only had the pleasure of meeting a couple of you. There is a very diverse group of people here...so it only stands to reason that there will be differences. I only hope that I have not been one of the ones to offend others, as that never is my intention. Hopefully, someday I will be able to meet more of you in person! :)

You know I feel the same way! I've found if you treat other people with respect and give them the benefit of the doubt regarding their intentions (i.e. the other side isn't evil and souless lol) they usually do the same in return, and a lot of hurt is avoided. The only ones I worry about are the ones who refuse to deal with a person on a reasonable level. Their response is always "You disagree with me because you're ignorant/cruel/stupid [insert insulting adjective of choice]!" And they don't even think they're doing anything wrong! They truly believe everyone who diagrees with them fits those descriptors. That's why you can't talk to them. You just have to hope one day they have an epiphany and change into ration human beings who treat others how they want to be treated. Such a change is possible - I've seen it happen! lol

I like to discuss and especially read other people's opinions on subjects that interest me. Even if internet can be a distorting megaphone, and easily becomes a borig play park for aggressive egomaniacs (as I can be too, but mostly in real life).

i rather enjoy the interactions between ledgies...else this place would probably be enjoyable to visit occassionally if only to catch up on the latest fm news...and if there wasnt any new news well....boring!

in the time i have been here there have been a few times when i do cringe as the heat leads to burns "do unto others..." but then someone usually will express an opinion of sanity and all is again relatively calm :wavey:

I disagree. I believe he should be very put off by it. If our petty arguments and controversial personality showcases don't frighten him, then perhaps nothing will. He must not let us desensitize him to the point of him unwillingly putting himself in danger. That would just be tragic.

I'm really bad. Everyone knows how I feel and I don't hide it. I guess it's not a good thing!!!!

I guess it's really bad when people don't even want to listen to the other side, and that is something I personally try to do.

It doesn't seem to me anyone here is that bad but again I'm too busy thinking what I am thinking....

Even if internet can be a distorting megaphoneI guess it can be for some; but in my own case & in the case of some others I know, the posts are the personality. I don't think there's anything I've ever posted that wasn't really me. Obviously, there are a multitude of sides, a plethora of facets, but each facet represents a genuine slab of heart organ & soul nonorgan.

Besides, there's a lot of personality information available on a board like this that reaches well beyond a person's actual words: what sorts of posts you reply to, what sorts of posts you initiate, what sort of approach you take to extend the board zeitgeist, the signature you tack on to your posts, your screen name, the frequency or infrequency with which you post, &c. All of these tell people something about you.

In terms of dealing with antagonism, it helps to spend a few years on Usenet newsgroups before venturing onto a Web board like this. If there's something in your soul cries out for the free & unfettered dissemination of ideas -- howsoever repugnant -- you'll gravitate to Usenet. Or ... you would have, at one time. It seems the Usenet Golden Age is over, but there's no way of knowing for sure since there are too many groups to monitor for vibrancy.

Usenet does seem to have died. AMFM certainly has. Everytime my Usenet goes down, I HAVE to call my provider. They've told me if I didn't call, they'd have no idea it was down, because I'm the only one using it!
And, you're right, I've found (a few years ago), far more argumentative folks on Usenet, than The Ledge.

I think people with strong personalities, definite beliefs and tastes, in their posts show many aspects of their character, sometimes even some they're not aware of. I'm also convinced that people who aren't that strong and feel the need to be at any cost accepted in a virtual community find on internet very cozy masks.

About the other input (what sorts of posts you reply to, what sorts of posts you initiate, what sort of approach you take to extend the board zeitgeist, the signature you tack on to your posts, your screen name, the frequency or infrequency with which you post, &c. ) I see them as elements to understand more but they can also help to create even better and more fitting masks.

Internet communities are for me very disordered crowds, to take the good in them, you just have to start trusting or pretending to believe, as in real life when you meet someone new. But here the game is more visible.

Nodding. I guess for us Dutch it can be a culture shock sometimes to witness the American version of free speech. Although, I felt a similar shock when coming back from the UK into our country and witnessing what we call manners.
